Welcome! The 2022-23 Jewish 411 is Southern California’s annual business directory and your source for information about everything from the performing arts, kosher bakeries, synagogues, lifecycle resources and day schools. Covering Orange County, San Diego County, Palm Springs and surrounding desert areas, you’ll find color-coded sections to help you navigate to your region of choice. The impact of Covid-19 was felt around the world and while Jewish life in Southern California was likewise affected, this book is proof of the robust, thriving community that is open for your patronage and involvement. As usual, there are also feature articles representing each region and an advertiser’s index at the back of the book to help you flip quickly to the business of your choice. For stories and information about Jewish events, organizations and people all year round, subscribe to the San Diego Jewish Journal at sdjewishjournal.com, or Orange Country JLife at ocjlife.com. We hope this booklet provides useful information throughout the year whether you get the 411 every year or this is your first time. THE JEWISH 411 ORANGE COUNTY FEATURE

Through The Years: A Reflection of Bubbe & Zayde’s Place BY BONNIE CURKIN PH.D.

Bubbe & Zayde’s Place opened in July 1998. Through the years it’s been a long road filled with loss, laughs, difficulties and more love and devotion than anyone could imagine. Healthcare, Hospice, Dementia patients and their families surpass most stressful positions. For me, this was never a job. It was a passion. Through the years, taking care of this specialized clientele 24/7 showed how fragile life is and how much patience and kindness is required. Few realize the consistent hard work and compassion the caregiver gives. Through the years I have dealt with many families who still remain grateful and sadly others who begged us for help, making false promises to repay and never forget us. Through the years they were so many we came to love as our own. When they were sick, we cried, slept beside them and prayed with them. G-d gave me the ability to do that. And I am grateful to G-d and all those who have inspired me and stood by us. Through the years hundreds of people have come through our doors for help. They are loved, cherished and respected. The next generation has stepped in and stepped up. My sons, Seth Curkin an Attorney and Shimon Cagan an E.M.T. make most decisions. I am so proud of the way they balance heart and brain. Through the years, Bubbe & Zayde’s Place was known for its heart and soul, a reputation that continues. I am grateful to see what I and others have founded, to grow in an even better direction. After all, that’s what we want. Through the years. Thank you to all those who continue to be supportive. 20

Holocaust Memorial Observance Takes Place at the UCR in Palm Desert BY TALIA LIZEMER-HAWLEY

Yom Ha’Shoah V’HaGevura, known as Holocaust and Heroism Remembrance Day, is a day dedicated to the memorial of the six million Jews and five million other lives lost under Nazi persecution. It also reminds us to commemorate the valiant actions of good people whose efforts and bravery saved hundreds of thousands of individuals from death and reflect on the acts of resistance that took place throughout the war. On Sunday, April 24th, the Jewish Federation of the Desert held a communitywide Holocaust Memorial Day Observance. The event was very well attended by Holocaust survivors and their families, clergy, civic representatives and the community at large. Holocaust survivors lit seven candles, representing the six million Jews and the seventh representing the other lives lost during the Holocaust. Guest speaker Julie Kohner, a Jewish educator and daughter of Holocaust survivors, has created Voices of the Generations an educational program to teach the Holocaust based on her own experience. Her goal is to keep her parents story alive and teach the Holocaust as seen through her mother’s eyes. Nadia Frutkin, an 8th grade student at Palm Desert Charter Middle School, was awarded 1st prize in the annual Holocaust essay contest. The commemoration also featured readings, music and prayers. A Golden Opportunity in the Desert BY PAMELA PRICE

When the Ozel family, originally from Turkey, arrived in Palm Springs in 1975, the desert was already a haven of tourism with golf, tennis, hiking and celebrity hangouts dominating the scene. Nearly 50 years later, the desert has taken wing again with world class events like the Palm Springs International Film Festival, Modernism Week and the anticipated Acrisure Arena which will be the home arena for the Coachella Valley Firebirds of the American Hockey League—bringing desert cool to a new literal level. Today Ozel Fine Jewelry in the heart of Palm Desert’s legendary El Paseo enjoys an international following, with long-time clients spanning three generations and tourists perusing the brilliant displays of custom-made jewelry and fine watches intermingled with traditional wedding bands and shimmering gold necklaces sharing space with creations by Joe Jaycobson and his family. Having spent two years in Izmir, Turkey while in the U.S. Air Force in the 1970s (and a good share of it shopping in Konak, Izmir’s legendary bazaar of unlimited shops and cafes), a wave of déjà vu overcame me when I inadvertently wandered into Ozel Fine Jewelry, where velvet-trimmed jewelry trays revealed intricate necklaces, rings, precious pins, bracelets and more, all sparkling in the afternoon rays of the desert sun. But what brought this family from Turkish bazaars to Palm Desert? Joe Jaycobson said after his grandfather’s arrival in 1975 his sons went on to 42

PALM SPRINGS FEATURE THE JEWISH 411 establish jewelry stores in Loma Linda, Redlands, Victorville and Marina Del Rey, among other cities. As per the family’s array of craftsmanship and talents, Ozel continues to provide onsite repairs, custom design, manufacturing and “repairs while you watch.” Their jewelry stores grace both high desert and the low desert: Joe says this is the family’s 30th year in Palm Desert. A long green awning extends from the entry of the jewelry store to the curb, imparting a regal flair to your arrival at the store. “Whether you are a year round-resident or a tourist, what better way to spend your time than perusing their impressive range of custom-designed jewelry, with so many diamonds, rubies, emeralds and pearls to tempt!” remarked my cousin, Morissa Hamburger, a visiting snowbird from Minneapolis. If you want to linger along El Paseo, you are only steps away from Il Sogno, a chic Italian cafe ideal for a cappuccino stop and desserts. And to the right of Ozel is none other than Anatolian Rugs, a gallery of Turkish imports resembling a museum. “Obviously, El Paseo is like a mini world class excursion and an enchanting way to discover the desert lifestyle,” Morissa said.

Palm Desert’s Temple Sinai Religious School Hosts a Holocaust Survivor BY TALIA LIZEMER-HAWLEY

Coachella Valley resident, Rickie Taras, captivated an audience while sharing her incredible Holocaust story with Temple Sinai’s Religious School students, families and staff. Belgium, Rickie’s birth country, was conquered by Nazi Germany on May of 1940. Rickie, an only child, was one-and-a-half years old at the time. Following the invasion the Germans instituted anti-Jewish laws and ordinances restricting civil rights, confiscating businesses & properties and banning certain professions. Rickie’s father, a furrier, was allowed to continue his profession, providing warm fur coats to German soldiers. His profession required some traveling between Antwerp and Brussels. On one occasion Rickie joined her father. Upon their return, they discovered that her mother had gone missing. Years later, Rickie learned that on that day, her mother was arrested, transported to Auschwitz Concentration Camp and murdered. One night Rickie and her father were awoken by loud knocks on their door. “Juden Raus,” (Jews Out) they said. Her father, carrying Rickie out, saw the trucks where Jews were being rounded up. Instead of boarding them, he decided to continue walking, slowly disappearing from German view. They managed to escape and hide in a friend’s residence. Unable to protect his child any longer, Rickie’s father gave her to righteous individuals who refused to cooperate with the Nazi regime and cared for Rickie. Belgium was liberated by Allied forces in Sept. 1944. Rickie, now six-years-old, reunited with her father. A few years later, they migrated to Montreal, Canada. Rickie and her father were the only two individuals in her extended family that survived the Holocaust. Our students are the last generation to be able to hear firsthand about the Holocaust. This will provide them tools to fight hate and discrimination and be advocates for social justice and peace. 44

SAN DIEGO FEATURE THE JEWISH 411 and work in science, technology, business and more, enabling students to work together across grades and with the broader community in new ways. SDJA proudly offers a diverse array of both extracurricular programs and inclusive curriculum classes in sports, arts, music and science, which are each integral to SDJA’s goal of developing well-rounded students. Toward that goal, the school just opened a new, state-of-the-art Ana “Janche” Galicot Performing Arts Auditorium (PAA). The 5,000 square foot facility features three multi-purpose rooms, a theater space and auditorium, as well as stateof-the-art audio, visual, lighting and acoustical design. SDJA’s Open Door program reduces the cost of an SDJA education by at least $10,000 for incoming K and 9th graders and keeps that reduced tuition cost stable for four years. Additional significant tuition assistance is available to families in all grades, making high quality education and meaningful Jewish community accessible for more families.

No charitable gift has a greater impact on the lives of Israelis.

There are many ways to support Israel and its people, but none is more transformative than a gift to Magen David Adom, Israel’s paramedic and Red Cross service. Your gift to MDA isn’t just changing lives — it’s literally saving them — providing critical care and hospital transport for everyone from victims of heart attacks to casualties of rocket attacks. Save a life through a gift to Magen David Adom today. Support MDA by visiting AFMDA.org/give or calling 800.323.2371.
