Palm Desert’s Temple Sinai Religious School Celebrates the Original Earth Day

The Jewish holiday of Tu B’Shevat, also known as the Birthday of the Trees, is an ancient holiday with dull origins, brought back to life with modern meaning . It is, perhaps, the world’s first Earth Day . It is a minor holiday, not mentioned in the Bible, whose roots extend back 2,000 years in Israel, when, for tax purposes, it marked the fiscal new year for fruit trees Today the holiday serves as a reminder of the importance of trees and the environment as a whole .

On Feb . 5, Palm Desert’s Temple Sinai Religious School held a Tu B’Shevat celebration As the students tasted fruits and nuts that grow on trees, they learned about Judaism’s agricultural history and connection to nature and our responsibility as stewards of the earth The event, similar to a Passover Seder, but including fruits instead of matzah (unleavened bread), emphasized to the students our renewed commitment to the land It also provided them with an opportunity to take on responsibility of environmental awareness and make Jewish values such as ‘repairing the world’ (Tikkun Olam) and ‘not destroying nature’ (Bal Tashchit) a part of our everyday lives .

In the 1940s and 1950s, large numbers of Iraqi Jews suffered antiSemitic violence and immigrated to Israel Sabich Tzvi Halabi, an Iraqi who had immigrated to Israel at the age of 18, owned a kiosk in Ramat Gan, a suburb of Tel Aviv in the 1980s He prepared this Iraqi breakfast dish to bus drivers at a kiosk at the end of a bus line . It is made up of fried eggplant, hard-boiled eggs, tahini, chopped salad, pickles and amba sauce all stuffed into a pita or rolled in the flat bread called laffa

In Iraq, it was eaten especially on Shabbat morning when they did not cook The recipe caught on and spread across Israel and even to the United States .

Sabich – 4 servings

• 1 large baking potato

• 1 eggplant in 2-inch slices

• 3 tbsp olive oil

• Salt and pepper to taste

• 1 cucumber, diced in 2-inch pieces

• 1 tomato, diced in 2-inch pieces

• 1 large minced jalapeño

• 2 minced garlic cloves

• 3 tbsp chopped cilantro

• 2 tbsp chopped parsley

• 2 tbsp . freshly squeezed lemon juice

• 4 thick, warmed pita breads

• 1 cup hummus

• ¼ cup tahini

• 4 large, sliced hard-boiled eggs

• 4 small, thinly sliced dill pickles

1 . Preheat the oven to 460 degrees F Place potato in a saucepan with 2 inches of water and bring to a boil Cook for 20 minutes or until tender . Drain and cool and slice into ¼-inch thick slices . Season with salt .

2 Arrange eggplant on a rimmed baking sheet and brush both sides with olive oil Season with salt and bake in a preheated oven for 10 minutes until browned and tender

3 In a large bowl, toss cucumber, tomato, jalapeno, garlic, cilantro and parsley with lemon juice and olive oil Season with salt and pepper

4 Cut off 2 inches from the side of the warm pitas to make openings in the pockets Gently open the pitas . Spread the hummus on the bottoms with tahini . Layer potato slices, eggplant, egg and cucumbertomato salad in the pitas along with some of the salad juices Top with the pickle slices and serve .

Under the direction of Bonnie Curkin, Bubbe & Zayde’s Place opened its doors to care for Jewish elderly . At the time, being a single Jewish female opening such a business was a difficult challenge Psalm 27 in Tehillim says, “If the Lord wants it to happen it will, or you will build in vain .” I have always believed that Hashem wanted Bubbe & Zayde’s Place to flourish because it has survived so many obstacles

Over the years we purchased six homes and created our own mini Kibbutz . A campus with walkways, fruit trees and fountains . We have dogs, rabbits, fish, birds and music We provide night care, hospice and palliative care, memory care, P T , O T and physician visits We are unique . Every Friday our services are in our beautiful synagogue with our own Torah

It is a blessing that two sons are now at the helm as well Seth Curkin left his law career of 14 years in New York to join Bubbe & Zayde’s Place . Shimon Cagan brought his healthcare experience to Bubbe & Zayde’s Place years ago . Traditions will carry on .

Jewish Federation of San Diego gathered over 200 community members for an enriching experience in Israel this May

The group participated in a ceremony of music at the Valley of Communities and went on a tour of Yad Vashem, the world Holocaust remembrance center . The cohort convened for a shabbat service led by the community rabbis

They explored the Machae Yehuda market in Jerusalem, did walking and bike tours and even went to Masada National Park and the Dead Sea .

Humane, Viable, Cost-Effective Asylum Reception Thriving in San Diego

San Diego has proven that humane, viable and cost-effective processes to welcome people seeking asylum in the U .S . is possible . The San Diego Rapid Response Network (SDRRN) Migrant Shelter Services, operated by Jewish Family Services of San Diego (JFSSD), has been providing such services along the border region since 2018, following the cancellation of “safe release .” “Safe release” was the long-held travel protocol to facilitate asylum seekers’ ability to safely reach their final destinations .

“The work of SDRRN Migrant Shelter Services demonstrates that a public-private partnership to assist asylum seekers and centered on humanity is not only possible, but successful and effective,” said Kate Clark, senior director, immigration services, Jewish Family Service of San Diego A new overview of the effort, released by JFSSD and the Women’s Refugee Commission (WRC), highlights how up to 7,200 people per month have been helped in the last two years alone, with a total of 120,000 individuals seeking asylum assisted over the last four-plus years

“Safe, humane and sustainable reception is the way forward as more vulnerable families and individuals –fleeing unimaginable dangers–approach the U .S . as a haven,” said Kimiko Hirota, WRC’s policy advisor for the Migrant Rights and Justice program “The work being done in San Diego is a blueprint for governments and communities across the U S to model ”
