Together...to Life!
While it may be difficult for some folks to think about moving to a senior living community, there are many benefits to start making that decision
A Social Life
Participating in shared activities and engaging with their peers socially are the main reasons seniors choose to move to Heritage Pointe Every day, our event calendar is full This gives seniors lots of opportunities to stay active and socialize within the community Research has shown that socializing with friends improves your health, including physical and emotional wellness At Heritage Pointe, a team of activities staff plan each week full of diverse and entertaining programs . Best of all, we encourage residents to participate and even lead new ideas for activities .
Nutritional Dining
Excellent and delicious nutrition should be a part of every senior’s daily experience Heritage Pointe offers a rotating menu filled with dishes that are flavorful and nutritious Residents enjoy three Kosher meals a day in the main dining room, where wait staff offer daily specials, personalized service and restaurant-style dining
Transportation Services
On-site Fitness and Physical Therapy
A senior’s mobility is often linked to their physical and emotional well-being . Heritage Pointe offers multiple daily fitness classes, led by accredited personal trainers, group walks, a personalized fitness plan and scheduled assistance if requested . There is also a physical therapist on site if needed, and the renovated senior-friendly fitness center promotes a healthy lifestyle for all residents .
Heritage Pointe has a weekly transportation schedule, as well as a fleet of bus/van/car options for residents . Trips to doctor offices, banks, the mall, the drugstore and more are available every week for free . Volunteers are also available to help seniors navigate medical buildings to get your loved ones where they need to go . Weekly outings to restaurants, concerts and events add to the social atmosphere of a lively senior community .
Retirement and Inflation
The cost of goods and services to maintain a senior’s home and healthy lifestyle continues to climb . Now, more than ever, it is important to secure a safe and comfortable home for a senior to age in place . Many seniors live in too-large homes with stairs, steps, thick rugs, or other potential fall risks . The best time for seniors to decide where to live is when the decision is their choice and at their timing . Heritage Pointe is a rental community, so there is no costly buy-in like other communities The monthly rent includes all utilities, phone, cable, transportation, Wi-Fi, emergency alert system, weekly housekeeping and linen services and three kosher meals served daily
If you want more information on talking with your loved ones about moving to a Jewish senior living community, visit www .HeritagePointe .org or call Shelly Malmon, Director of Marketing & Admissions at (949) 276-6227

IAC Brings People Together; Celebration Draws Huge Crowd
BY ILENE SCHNEIDER
There is truly something for everyone in Orange County’s diverse Jewish community From the beaches to the hills, in person and online, the community is connected, committed and enthusiastic .
Nothing epitomizes unity in quite the same way as the Israeli American Council (IAC) . Established in 2018, IAC Orange County attempts to strengthen and enhance the Israeli-American community By engaging families, building partnerships and initiating innovative programs, IAC Orange County hopes to convey the flavor of Israeli life to Southern California .
IAC also provides a forum for addressing the situation in Israel From informal coffees among members to educational programs to community lectures to rallies to efforts to fend off anti-Semitism in cities and on college campuses, IAC brings the Jewish community together
Capping this year’s programming was Celebrate Israel 76, a fair and expo with kosher and Israeli cuisine, a flag parade, vendors, information booths, children’s activities, live performances and a concert by Israeli singer David Broza The Independence Day event was a source of great pride, with a large community of Israel supporters gathered together at Tarbut V’Torah Day School to show the world that we will always support our homeland from afar .
“The strength of our unity was truly felt, and we experienced the power of a community united for the good of Israel,” said Inbal Greenberg, IAC Orange County regional director

Palm Desert’s Temple Sinai Celebrates Purim
STORY AND PHOTOGRAPH BY TALIA LIZEMER-HAWLEY
The Jewish holiday of Purim first took place in ancient Persia in the year 356 BCE, 2380 years ago It celebrates the triumphant story of an unlikely heroine, the Jewish queen Esther, an interfaith marriage between Esther and the Persian king Ahasuerus, and the downfall of an evil Shrek (villain/monster in Yiddish), the Persian king’s adviser, Haman .
On March 22, 2024, Palm Desert’s Temple Sinai held a very cheery Purim Family Shabbat Congregants, religious school and TotShabbat families, and the community at large were all included in this festive celebration
We gathered in our Purim costumes in our Purim-decorated social hall while munching on hamantaschen baked by our students and educators .
We then convened in our beautiful sanctuary . Following the Shabbat candle lighting, graggers (noisemakers) were handed to the guests . Rabbi David Novak led the service by reading “The Whole Purim Megillah, Almost,” while students, families and staff seated on the bimah shook their groggers and booed every time the villain Haman was mentioned .
We concluded the evening by saying the Shabbat evening blessings of Kiddush over the wine/grape juice and Ha’Motzi blessing over the challah
Local Community Enjoys
“Fiddler
on the Roof”
Production at Rancho Mirage’s Amphitheater
STORY AND PHOTOGRAPH BY TALIA LIZEMER-HAWLEY
Desert Theatricals inaugurated their “Under the Stars” spring season events with the Broadway musical “Fiddler on the Roof ” This March 8-10 event was sold out .
The production took place at the Rancho Mirage’s Community Park amphitheater under the award-winning artistic direction of Ray Limon and Joshua Carr
“Fiddler on the Roof” is a portrayal of Jewish life in the fictional shtetl of Anatevka in 1905 . Anatevka is part of the Pale of Settlements of
the Russian Empire, the only region where Jews were allowed to live . During political/social crises, the Russian government would incite the population against the Jews, trying to divert its attention from the real challenges
The play takes its name from a Marc Chagall painting “The Fiddler,” a metaphor for survival in a life of uncertainty . Tevye, a poor Jewish peasant and his wife, Golde, are trying to hold to traditional values while their three eldest daughters choose to marry men of their choice for love They ask their father for his blessing, not his permission
Tevye is trying to maintain a fragile balance between traditional Jewish life and adapting to a changing world . The sad ending of the play depicts Tevye, his family and all the Jews leaving Anatevka following the cruel decree that all Jews must leave within three days Tevye pulls his cart while the fiddler follows
Even though “Fiddler on the Roof” depicts a bygone era, the story is relevant today as Jewish communities continue to experience changing cultural norms and must deal with the rise in anti-Semitism worldwide
You and these puppies can change the world!
Students can sponsor a puppy as their Mitzvah Project or class Tzedakah Project, and change the lives of Israelis who are blind, veterans with PTSD, and children with autism.
Local Community Commemorates Holocaust Remembrance Day
BY TALIA LIZEMER-HAWLEY
On January 27, 1945, Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest and most infamous concentration camp of the Holocaust, was liberated . Of the 1 3 million individuals sent to Auschwitz, 1 1 million perished
On Friday, January 26, 2024, the Mensch Foundation held a commemoration event at the Palm Desert Civic Park . Attendees included Holocaust survivors, city and state representatives, clergy, students from Palm Desert Charter and Sacred Heart Middle Schools, and the community at large .
The commemoration concluded at the Holocaust Memorial, the only one in Riverside County, where seven candles were lit in memory of the victims of the Holocaust .

SAN DIEGO
A Unified Vision For the Future
We find ourselves at a pivotal moment in the San Diego Jewish community The rise of antisemitism following the tragic events of October 7 in Israel has deeply affected us all, with a recent report from the American Jewish Committee highlighting a 400% surge in antisemitic incidents nationwide .
Strong leadership is crucial now more than ever . At Jewish Federation, we are dedicated to cultivating a new generation of leaders through programs like our Courageous Leadership Initiative, Teen Peer Leaders Fellowship, and Pauline Foster Women’s Leadership Institute . These initiatives not only enhance participants’ leadership skills but also foster a shared sense of identity and purpose .
We are also working tirelessly to ensure the safety of our Jewish institutions . Through our partnership with Secure Community Network, we have intensified efforts to keep these spaces safe and welcoming . And through initiatives like our Antisemitism Roundtable, we collaborate, share information and coordinate responses in partnership with many of our local Jewish organizations in the fight against rising antisemitism .
Despite the challenges we face, Jewish life in San Diego thrives . At Federation, we are committed to promoting advocacy, education and a deeper understanding of modern Jewish life and its connection to Israel . Engaging Jewish experiences that build community and identity are vital to preserving our cultural heritage and unity None of our efforts would be possible without the unwavering support and generosity of our San Diego community . By supporting our Federation, you play a crucial role in building a stronger, more connected Jewish community

Jewish Care at Jewish Family Serice
At the Center for Jewish Care at Jewish Family Service, we are building tikvah (hope) and kehillah (community) through gemilut chasadim (acts of loving kindness) . The Center provides compassionate and confidential support to address the comprehensive needs of our Jewish community From housing, food, and transportation to mental health and spiritual support, the Center’s dedicated team of culturally competent professionals work alongside community members so they can regain stability and move forward with dignity
In response to the high cost of living and lack of affordable housing, we offer many services, including a Housing Resource Navigator In addition, our mental health professionals and the new Jewish Community Emergency Response Team provide emotional support to San Diegans impacted by antisemitism on campus, in the workplace, and within our neighborhoods . As a home for tikkun olam (repairing the world), the Center also connects our Jewish community to meaningful volunteer opportunities, b’nai mitzvah projects, community-wide drives, and authentic Jewish conversations
