WELCOME TO PADDLESPORT 2014
“…There is nothing—absolutely nothing—half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.” —Kenneth Grahame, The Wind In The Willows
That is how I feel, do you? Like the Water Rat, trying to explain to Mole just how great being on the water is. The Boy Scouts got me into my first boat, a canoe, and I still enjoy canoeing and canoe camping. Whitewater kayaking and rafting came next, exploring rivers in Pennsylvania and West Virginia with friends. A downriver racing boat and a fitness paddling period was next on the water, paddling with some kayak racers from nearby Toms River. Touring kayaks and island camping off the coast of Maine with customers I met at the store followed to add to my paddling experiences. Top all that off with a couple of summers of playing around on stand up paddleboards. They are all so different but so much to same, all “simply messing about in boats.”
Paddlesport 2014 is a great place to see new product and meet the manufacturers. New to this year’s show are composite kayak builders STELLAR and QCC. Also for the first time this year are BOREAL,RIOT and SEWARD KAYAKS introducing new boats in thermoplastic construction. SUP companies BOARDWORKS and PAU HANA are new to the 2014 show too. VALLEY KAYAKS will exhibit again this year, as will TRAK KAYAKS. The paddling accessories are always well assorted at the show, including the best of the
best. Paddling clothing from KOKATAT, STOHLQUIST, LEVEL SIX, OUTDOOR RESEARCH and NRS, from drysuits and layering gear to gloves and booties, will all be at the show. The top manufacturers of life jackets for all levels and types of paddlers include ASTRAL BUOYANCY, KOKATAT, MTI AND STOHLQUIST. New this year will be the NOCQUA underwater LED light system for SUP and kayak anglers. SPERRY TOPSIDER will debut their new paddlers shoes and SYLVAN TRAILER returns to show their innovative gear-travel-camping trailers. All at special prices! QR code generated on http://qrcode.littleidiot.be
A new feature this year is a SECOND POOL in the main hall for KAYAK FISHING and SUP demonstrations. The top instructors, guides and experts from the world of paddling will provide seminars and clinics all three days of Paddlesport. Complete descriptions and bios of the speakers are here in the newspaper and the schedule will be posted on the Jersey Paddler website.
Paddlesport would not be complete without the many clubs and organizations who volunteer their time at the show to talk to you. Looking for some instruction or simply some people to paddle with on the weekend—you will find the clubs are a great place to start. Planning a paddling trip—check out the guides, schools and outfitters at the show and ask the experts about where they go. Planning to stay local—try the helpful employees of our local parks departments to find a trip or course and learn what paddling they offer nearby.
The PADDLESPORT show is only a three day event, but the experience doesn’t have to end there. Make a visit to our shop in Brick, New Jersey and again you will find everything you need for your paddling adventure. We have the kayaks, canoes and stand up paddleboards and more accessories than any shop on the east coast. We are a specialty retailer who repairs, installs and services everything we sell. Take a class or join a tour led by our team of instructors. Visit our main store, shop and boat yard and we feel you will be impressed with what the Jersey Paddler has to offer the paddling enthusiast.

SUP - Make a Change in YOUR Life in 2014!
By Tina Fetten
Stand Up Paddling, or “SUP” as enthusiasts call it, changed my life in 2009 when it was introduced to me to compliment my fitness regimen. The physical, mental and spiritual benefits of this water sport have the potential to improve many facets of your life. The overall body workout, which involves muscles from my neck to my feet, allowed me to create a regimen that developed strength and toning, while remaining low impact on my joints. As my paddle skill and speed progressed, I became curious about other things I could do on the board. I quickly realized that SUP can provide enormous benefits to people, regardless of their skill level. RESISTANCE BANDS
Here are what I suggest to be the most effective ways to incorporate SUP fitness into YOUR life in 2014; SUP YOGA
SUP Yoga takes your yoga practice to a higher level. Practicing on the water creates an increased awareness of your body, breathing and muscle-tobone alignment, allowing you to gain the maximum benefits of each pose. The serenity of floating on beautiful, landscaped waterways will enhance your deep breathing, sun salutations and inversions; you will achieve your goal of a more profound level of mindfulness, fostering inner and outer strength throughout your whole body. Participants at all levels will enjoy the feelings of peace that are created from the environment surrounding you. And for the advanced yogis, practicing on your board will help you understand the true meaning of Tadasana.
SUP CARDIO CONDITIONING
Many fitness enthusiasts feel they haven’t had a workout unless their heart is pumping at full throttle and sweat is pouring off of their bodies. Utilizing your SUP board as your gym floor will do just that, with the added benefit of having nature as your backdrop. Whether you are planking, engaging your core through various abdominal exercises, burpees, or different lunge sequences, the board challenges you to engage your muscles
to a heightened level to stay balanced. As SUP racing grows in popularity, but on the citizen and highly competitive levels, work outs targeted for distance and speed are more readily available. Even if you are not speeding, just getting out and paddling can do you such good. I encourage you to be adventurous in exploring different cardio sets to see what works best for you. What’s the worst thing that could happen - falling in the water?
Simple resistance bands wrapped around the board will elevate your strength training to much higher level. Through the resistance you can tap into and ignite your muscle strength in not only your upper body, but in your core and lower body as your ground for balance. The combination of maintaining your balance on the water while engaging the resistance bands utilizes muscles from your chin to your feet. You may also want to incorporate other equipment into your practice, such as your SUP Paddle or wrist/leg weights.
JUST STANDING!
For the SUP beginner, simply learning to stand will be a total body workout. I always stress with my beginners that just learning to ground down and stand up in proper form can challenge your muscles. Be sure to connect with Jersey Paddler* or a reputable SUP coach in your area who is well trained in the skill and safety of SUP. Using proper form will not only ensure your safety, it will also require you to use all of your muscles properly. In addition, learning the basics of standing will allow you to maintain control on the water in all situations, which will build your confidence and allow you to become more adventurous in your SUP routine. I promise through practicing the transitions from sitting to standing and balancing you will begin to tap into muscles you never knew existed.
12 www.jerseypaddler.com
Always keep in mind that whether you sit, kneel, stand, paddle, or workout on a board you are tapping into the many benefits that SUP has to offer. So in 2014 step out of your comfort zone, make a change, and go out there and paddle!!!!

Virginia and the Red Fish Your Next Kayak Fishing Adventure By Mark Lozier
Southeast Virginia has some amazing year-round opportunities for the mid-Atlantic kayak angler with limited travel. This area is perfect for an easy solo mission, a fishing trip with your buddies or even a quick family escape. Whether fishing from the many tributaries that converge into the Chesapeake Bay or targeting species found in the Atlantic Ocean, there is no shortage of options.
Depending on the season the species of fish will vary from flounder, speckled trout, striped bass, black drum and spadefish. However it is certainly the red drum or red fish that gets the most interest and this hard fighting favorite certainly deserves it. When you do you plan your southern adventures, here are some simple tips for increasing your red fish catch and making the road trip and even bigger success.

CRUISER
5 Tips for catching Redfish Where are the Redfish at? Redfish are generally a shallow water fish, living in and around estuaries. Increase your success for finding them by working structure, especially oyster bars, flooded grass and drop-offs as they head back to deeper water with the change of tide. Increase casting distance, cover more water and stay in the strike zones longer. Although the real monsters tend to keep to themselves, red fish are a schooling fish. Once you get one you will tend to get into a mess of them. Use the tide and current to your advantage This will certainly help make your paddle to and from the launch more enjoyable. On an outgoing tide, you will find
feeding fish coming off the marsh/ grass/mud flats dropping back into the creek or river. 14
Top off your top-water arsenal. Nothing adds excitement like fish exploding on top water lures. The tendencies of Reds to feed in the shallow salt marshes and grass flats makes casting top water baits while site fishing added fun. Fly fisherman especially love this species. Certainly getting local knowledge is a key element to any travelling angler’s success. Natural bait such as blue crab, mud minnows, or small baitfish like mullet or menhaden shad can help attract stubborn fish if the bite slows. Have a variety of jig heads as you may need to go heavy to work the varying currents as tide changes in the estuaries. Go deep for fall fatties. During their fall migration, they can be found in the deep channels leading out to the ocean – hence the nickname, “channel bass.” These may be the biggest reds you will find, and they may be the easiest to catch as well. As temperatures cool off up north a www.jerseypaddler.com
trip south is a great way to extend the fishing season. Local knowledge is always a great way to quickly figure out the best launches, tides, and what they are feeding on. And although even the friendliest of fellow anglers may not point you directly to their best spots, the local help will certainly increase your success. Internet searches can help you find all the additional information you may need.
any level of paddler can find their challenge. Make sure to take in the some of the sites, Virginia has a plethora of historic battlefields, beaches, amusement parks and even the site of Captain John Smith’s first landing on this continent. These will just add to the adventure and make the trip more memorable. Always plan your fish and fish your plan. Hope to see you on the water!
Certainly the red fish is the star of the show, but with all of the different fish and variety of places to fish for them, Virginia does make a great get away for the northern kayak angler. From the more benign inlets and inshore rivers to the massive Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel or open surf launches of the Atlantic Ocean,
Author Mark Lozier has been targeting Virginia species from his kayak for the past 10 years. Fishing from a kayak is unlike any other type of angling. Its shallow draft and sleek profile affords access to areas that are simply inaccessible by any other means. There’s nothing like the fight of a backwater striped bass that tows the boat up current, or that largemouth that jumps to eye level. Let our experienced guides show you how to utilize kayaks to target local fresh and saltwater game fish in a custom trip. Fishing kayaks and all gear/equipment are provided, or bring your own.
SALT WATER KAYAK FISHING By drifting, trolling, wading and sight casting, the kayak angler can effectively fish productive areas in the open bay, shallow flats and tidal creeks. Target striped bass, bluefish, weakfish, fluke and more using a combination of swimming lures, soft plastics and fresh bait on protected salt water in Barnegat Bay and beyond. Led by Ricky Wolpert.
FRESHWATER KAYAK FISHING The freshwater lakes of around New Jersey offer top notch fishing for the beginner or seasoned angler. Their calm waters make for a perfect destination for an individual or the whole family. Join our professional guide Ricky Wolpert for a fishing excursion targeting such species as largemouth bass, pickerel, trout, perch and pan fish. Kayak Fishing with Heroes on the Water A Veterans Story
By SGT. Ward, Gary - US. Army Inf.
Fishing has been a part of my life since my father started taking me when I was 2. As I grew older I had a passion and love for the sport. For me fishing was my time to let go of the problems in my life and the world and just relax. After returning home from a deployment to Iraq in 2006, I had issues with sleep and anger and found myself fishing less and drinking more than I should have. I had learned about kayak fishing, while deployed, from different fishing magazines. So I decided to purchase a kayak and give it a shot. It didn’t take long to figure
help me with my ongoing issues. Now I don’t want people to think that this alone is adequate treatment, because it’s not, but it sure does help. Kayak fishing has turned into a staple in my life. It helps me clear my head and forget my issues, even if only for the duration of the time I am out. Being able to load my truck up and
go to a remote lake, or the bay and just get out and be at peace is amazing. It is very rewarding when I am out in my kayak on the water fishing, or just out for a paddle. Sometimes I will just drift around listening to the birds, taking in the scenery and the smell of the salt air. Other times it is line-screaming fish-on action, which is always a blast. In 2013, I had heard of an organization that took veterans and their families out kayak fishing, or just to paddle. This was my first introduction to Heroes On The Water (HOW). This organization is absolutely amazing. I attended one event in 2013 and am now awaiting the start of the 2014 season to attend more of them.
out that this was just what I needed. Being able to go out and float around and fish was very peaceful, relaxing and helped with my anxiety and other issues I was going through upon returning. Fishing had been such a staple in my life before I joined the Army, and has helped ease my transition back into civilian life. I feel that it did in fact save me from self-destruction.
What this organization does for veterans and their families is nothing short of amazing. They provide the kayaks, fishing tackle, life vests and lunch for all who attend. There is no cost to the veteran and family. It is free. Matt Williams, the Chapter Coordinator for NJ Heroes On The Water and his staff of volunteers go above and beyond to make sure each event is enjoyable for the veteran. I have grown to know several of the people who help Matt with the events and now fish with them occasionally throughout the year. To me, kayak fishing is a form of therapy that could not be replaced. There is no better feeling when kayak fishing then to feel the fish hit the lure, line screaming off the reel, and battling the fish into submission. For me, kayak fishing is my version of church.
But all good things come to an end, at least for a little while. I was deployed again, from 2007 to 2008, to Afghanistan which turned out to be a much more eventful deployment.
Heroes on the Water started as a test at Brooke Army Medical Center in 2007. What they found was not much unlike what you and I already knew, that kayak fishing is therapeutic. They discovered that wounded soldiers were more receptive to their traditional physical and psychological therapies if they also participated in a kayak fishing program. The simple act of fishing opened the door for therapists to begin the healing process. Sitting on the water allowed veterans to exhale and enjoy the interface with nature. These are emotional responses but the proof was in the surveys measuring four specific areas: overall stress, hyper-vigilance, avoidance and isolation, and flashbacks and recurring experience of nightmares. The impact is measurable and repeatable. There was a 78% reduction in overall stress, a 77% reduction in hyper vigilance, a 63% in avoidance behavior and a 56% reduction in recurring nightmares. The program quickly expanded and now serves thousands of veterans and their families through 43 chapters across the United States. There are even chapters in the U.K. and Australia. Our nation has trained the most powerful fighting force in the world. The men and women of our armed forces are some of the toughest people you will ever meet. Once deployed, they encounter intense situations. Every bump in a road could be an IED. Every car approaching could have hostile occupants. They become hyper vigilant, always scanning,
always evaluating, never resting. They experience horrible situations and see things that will change them, things that will haunt them. And then they come home, many with physical or psychological injuries. PTSD is one of the more common conditions. PTSD can be crippling, relegating them to their homes so as to avoid the stimuli that might trigger their condition. Seeing a squirrel dart across the road, the sound of an airplane overhead, fireworks on the 4th of July, a crowded mall. It can be equally difficult for those suffering from physical ailments. These, once strong independent, warriors now may rely on others to help them move around and do things that they used to take for granted. But kayak fishing has levelled the playing field of recovery and reintegration. Kayak fishing empowers people with an activity where they in control again. Once again, a veteran can rely on the performance of his or her own body. On the water you at peace. On the water, there are no squirrels, no fireworks, and no crowds. Only the soft rocking of the kayak, soothing and calming you. Nothing else matters at that moment, not your condition, not the memories. For the moment, you are one with the kayak and fishing rod. The rhythmic swell, coupled with your concentration working the lure, has put you in a trance. Stress has melted away. All you can hear is the soft slapping of the water against the side of the kayak and some birds chirping in the distance.
Heroes on the Water NJ Chapter was formed in 2012
Chapter is 100% Volunteer Based. In 2013 we hosted 188 warriors/ family members at 10 locations throughout the state, both Saltwater and Freshwater locations. In 2014 we will be hosting another 10 exciting weekend events and some additional mid-week events as well. 100% Cost FREE for Veterans, Active Duty Service Members and their Family Members. To join us as a volunteer or participant contact us at NJ@ HeroesOnTheWater.org For more information: heroesonthewater.org/chapters/ new-jersey-chapter/
Upon returning home, I found myself facing an uphill battle with PTSD while I was still on active duty. I did not look to get the help I needed so I again turned to kayak fishing to

Pemaquid Point, Maine - The Best of Two Bays fresh air, enjoy a serene paddle,

and commune with nature…
I
am often asked why I do what I do and why I chose the midcoast of Maine to set up shop. I own a kayak business because I absolutely love sharing the art of kayaking with people. There is no better way to recharge and relax than to re-connect with nature in a fun and interesting way. As for why the mid-coast? I actually specifically chose the Pemaquid Peninsula because it offers some amazing paddling opportunities and is just the right environment for folks wanting to explore what the Maine coast has to offer. Situated half-way between the popular town of Freeport and the coastal gem of Rockland, the Pemaquid Peninsula separates the outlet of the Pemaquid and Johns Rivers to the west and the outlet of the Medomak River to the east to provide the best of what the Maine coast is famous for - quiet pocket sand beaches; rocky, craggy shorelines; uninhabited forested islands; and working waterfronts lined with quaint cottages and moored lobster boats.

and ancient summer cottages, and several uninhabited, untouched islands of the Maine Island Trail. Because of its expanse, the greater exposure on this side of the peninsula and the dozen or so islands available for public use, this is a great place for fullday trips and overnight island camping. Seals sunning on the rocky ledges are a daily occurrence and it never gets old to see the wonder of these animals through the eyes of someone new.
J
ohn’s Bay to the west offers less expansive reaches but a more sheltered paddling environment, perfect for shorter trips like our half-day. This Bay has really cool history like Colonial Pemaquid, a settlement that they believe pre-dates Jamestown and the former Fort William Henry that stands guard over the entrance to the harbor. Its proximity to Boothbay Harbor offers some great seaside inns that provide perfect respite for a long day of paddling. And for adventurers that want a multi-day experience with a hot shower and soft bed, an inn-to-inn trip over here can’t be beat. Overall, John’s Bay offers a decidedly different and yet equally amazing paddling environment.
uscongus Bay to the east at the outlet of the Medomak River is amazing in its simplistic beauty, with little development, consisting of the quaintest fishing villages For landlubbers, this mid-coast www.jerseypaddler.com
location offers just the right mix of interesting shops, great restaurants, and quaint inns, without completely overwhelming the area. Being one of Maine’s best-kept secrets, crowds are minimal and the two bays are quiet and virtually empty, save for the occasional lobster boat. If you are looking for a trip to get some fresh air, enjoy a serene paddle, and commune with nature, I highly recommend the Pemaquid Peninsula. If you come visit, keep these things in mind: 1) be experienced or go with experience—the ocean is beautiful and fickle; 2) be conscientious of your surroundings and nature will reward your discretion; and 3) the ultimate end to a great paddling day is a lobster roll and a pint of Pemaquid Ale. Alvah Maloney is the owner of Maine Kayak, which gives Alvah the opportunity to share his love of the outdoors and Maine’s beautiful paddling environments in every season. Meet Alvah at Paddlesport 2014 at the Maine Kayak booth and his “Kayaking in Maine” seminar.
