Letter to Our Readers
N
ow that the weather has finally warmed up, outdoor activities are on our minds more and more. One such activity (some call it a sport) is golf, and New Jersey offers an abundance of courses, both public and private. In this issue our writers offer you a description of 10 of the state’s top public courses plus a listing of some of the most popular local courses open to all. Enjoy the read then “hit ‘em straight.” Want to dine in the metropolitan atmosphere of a fine NYC restaurant without facing the expense of traveling to the “Big Apple?” Visit Chris Michael’s in Woodbridge. This month’s featured Venue of Distinction is a combination steakhouse, lounge-style nightclub and sports bar offering virtually everything to satisfy your palate’s desire. Naturally, we attempt in each monthly issue to educate our readers on the subjects of libation servers and musical performers. In this issue our writers introduce you to Jess Bilof, a veteran mixologist with two priorities in her life: her family and her job. This single mom handles both with passion and devotion. Then we present funktion 11, a highly diverse, multi-talented musical group that combines the dominant percussion and horn sounds of the past with the words and lyrics of today’s music. For your “comic relief,” our writers queried a Jersey Shore “original,” Chris Covert. Chris has worked as a stand-up comic throughout the Central NJ area since he graduated from school. He actually credits detention in school (or as he calls it “8th period”) for igniting his career. “It’s where I refined my material” he says. Take a few minutes to read the interview with Chris. Dining, entertainment, friendly people, libations, timely information, it’s all here in this month’s issue to help enhance your leisure time. We hope you enjoy the “read.” Then, go out and have fun.

Venue of Distinction: Chris MiChael’s steakhouse / lounge / sports Bar
by CLARE MARIE CELANO
R
estaurateur Chris Kontos had a vision -- to offer New Jersey residents New York Metropolitan dining without the expense of the tolls and bridges needed to venture to the city.

nyone who sees funktion 11 play is treated to a musical experience unlike anything else around. A highly diverse and multi-talented group, its members have worked with some of the top artists in the world and use that knowledge and experience to create a unique sound. “Our music is the best of both worlds,” says percussionist and band leader Ronnie Nalven. “It brings you back to a time when percussion and horns were dominant, but with the words and the lyrics and the music of today.”
Band members add their own distinctive elements to classic songs to give them a new twist, typically by adding their own horn line. “Even cover songs you’ve heard and known for years we do in a different way,” Nalven says, using Wild Cherry’s “Play That Funky Music.” (Check it out on the band’s website, funktion11.com.) “The music is so much more complex than the standard songs people would know, we put our spin on them and play them the way we like them.” It’s their four-piece horn section that allows them to add elements of jazz, R&B and funk into each one of their songs. The idea to create the band came to Nalven in 2005 when he was playing with a Cherry Hillbased group that fell apart. funktion 11 took off in the beginning of 2007 “to try and play music to recapture some days of my youth

when horn bands were bigger then. Tower of Power, Chicago, Earth Wind and Fire, Cool and the Gang, that whole vibe,” Nalven explains. Nalven is joined by vocalists Vanessa Perea and Tony Zeke, trumpeters Anja-Christin and Lee Hogans, saxophonist and flutist Andrew Gutauskas, trombonist Robert Edwards, guitarist Misha Fatkiev, bassist Charles “Chip” Moore, keyboardist Samar Newsome and drummer Kelvin King. Nalven put the members of funktion 11 together with a specific purpose and the wide range of ethnicities, cultures and backgrounds of the musicians involved with the group allows for them to appeal to mass audiences. Combined, they know English, Spanish, Russian, Norwegian and Hebrew and they can perform in Spanish just as fluently as in English. It’s their diversity that is one of the top selling points for a band whose members have impressive resumes. With Nalven being the lone exception, every member of funktion 11 works in the music industry full time. Hogans, who also serves as the musical director, is one of the top trumpeters in the country. He has a master’s degree in Jazz Performance from Rutgers University and has toured with Jay-Z, Sean Combs and Prince, though he’s not the only member to have worked with a world-famous musician. He recently performed with the Jonas Brothers on “The Today Show,” “Dancing With The Stars,” “Good Morning America” and “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.”
rently teaching music with recordings available on iTunes. Every member of the band has other projects besides funktion 11 they work on which allows them to bring in new elements and sounds. Many members including Perea, Anja-Christin, Moore, King and Zeke started off singing and playing in church choirs, giving them the kind of soul typically reserved for those hallowed halls. Fatkiev has performed at many grand halls of his own including Carnegie Hall and was invited by Pandit Divyang Vakil, an Indian tabla guru, to perform at a music festival in his honor. Aside from its live music, funktion 11 is working on a CD of all original songs, tentatively ready by the end of the year. The band currently has seven in its repertoire and is working on getting to 10 before the members begin recording. “We think we’re on to something really special,” Nalven opines. “It’s got a combination of that older big horn sound, that sound from the 70s and 80s that’s disappeared, and it’s got more of the beats that people want in 2013.” For more information on band members as well as audio samples and event dates, visit funktion11.com or follow them on Twitter: @ function_11.
King has worked with Stevie Wonder and Gladys Knight to name just a few and Gutauskas has played with Michael Buble and Paul Simon, among others. Gutauskas also studied at Julliard as did Edwards and, like Hogans, AnjaChristin studied at Rutgers. for her grandson is important to this new young grandmother, and she takes it seriously. “If I don’t get to see Jace at least once a week, I have a fit,” she laughs. “Having a grandchild is the greatest thing. It’s unconditional love.” Jess, Ariela, and Pat, spend a lot of time together, enjoying family pool parties and BBQ’s at Pat’s house. Spending time with her family is as satisfying to Bilof as serving her customers.

Bartender Jessica Bilof has two priorities in life -- her family and her job, and she tends to both with passion and devotion. The veteran bartender has worked in the restaurant industry for 18 years and would never dream of leaving it. “I couldn’t have a job where I have to sit down,” she says, admitting than an office job would never suit her high-energy personality. She prefers being on the move, working at a fast-paced job where she can meet interesting people. “And, I want to be in a place where I can make people feel at home,” she adds.

Jess intends to “stay in the business,” remarking that the industry has been good to her, allowing her to work a flexible schedule over the years. This was important to her as a single mom when her daughter Ariela, now 19, was young. “And, the money is good too,” she reveals. “After I worked my first bartending job, I was hooked.” Bartending holds just as much appeal today as it did years ago for Bilof by allowing her the time to hang out with mom, Pat, Ariela and Ariela’s eight-month old son, Jace. Currently, she tends bar at 21 South Bar and Grille, in Jackson, where she works the night shift which suits her just fine. She enjoys working the late shift because she is able to work when entertainment is offered, which she finds exciting. “I love working here and helping the business get established. I’ve watch its growth since we opened,” she relates of the sports bar, which launched in 2012 and which has grown significantly. Jess said she “makes a pretty mean” Long Island iced tea, as well as “killer’’ martinis and mojitos. And she adds, she loves meeting new people, so please come on down to 21 South Bar and Grille and say “Hi”.

s with so many things New Jersey is known for, rich and abundant golf courses are yet another thing for us to boast about. Our tightly packed state features hundreds of courses of all types, reflecting the growing popularity of this rather genteel sport. The number of men, women and children taking up the club continues to grow. Golf is perhaps the only sport that effectively combines social play with individual challenge (beating your own best). And of course, fresh air and lushly landscaped surroundings only serve to enhance the overall experience. By the way, this is by no means an “official” Top 10 list, it’s an amalgamation of suggestions from you, our readers, and our staff.

You can enjoy all your favorite sporting events on the many flat-screen televisions inside the 16,000-square-foot clubhouse that also features a ballroom. Outdoors, golfers can enjoy the 6,000-square-foot bluestone patio for dining and tented events.

B R O A D W A Y A Review
Most New Yorkers would hesitate to don the dazzling footwear displayed in the new Broadway musical Kinky Boots. When you live in a city of potholes, sloping sidewalks, and perilous subway stairs, the six-inch stiletto is not your friend. Yet audiences have heartily embraced this middling production at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre, which features pop icon Cyndi Lauper as composer and lyricist. Based on a 2005 indie film (itself derived from a true story of small-business gumption, Kinky Boots tells how a failing firm reinvents itself as a manufacturer of fetishwear for the cross-dressed gent. As the show begins, Charlie Price (the plucky Stark Sands) has ditched his backwater roots for London lights, but his father’s death lures him back to struggling the Price & Son factory, rendered, in David Rockwell’s set design as a slightly grimy Santa’s workshop. Cancelled orders and cheaper imports nearly convince Charlie to close when an encounter with drag queen Lola (the hard-charging Billy Porter) changes his fiscal
fate. “There must be a niche market for properly built-to-last women’s boots for women who are men,” Charlie declares. Lola signs on as designer and soon songs are sung, lessons learned, and thigh-high patent leather donned. For a musical with such racy themes, it would be difficult to picture a more conservative, familyfriendly show. The book is by Harvey Fierstein and it is about as provocative and challenging as a soft toy. Yes, drag queens abound on stage, but as Lola says: “Drag queens are mainstream. Just this morning I was offered a gig singing at a nursing home. A nursing home, Charlie!. In Claxton.” Despite a few bustiers and songs entitled Sex Is in the Heel and What a Woman Wants, this is an oddly chaste show. The only clinch occurs in the last moment and is strictly gender conforming. The script doesn’t even permit Lola to evince an attraction to anyone. We can credit costume designer Gregg Barnes with the boots – they really are luscious. But similar originality evades most of the songs, which, though tuneful enough, fade from the mind as soon as the last note has sounded. A few exceptions are The History of Wrong Guys, a clever girl/dumb choices number milked gleefully by Annaleigh Ashford, and I’m Not My Father’s Son, a duet for Sands and Porter. Most of the others, even those that promise well, ultimately come across as generic, accomplishing little in terms of revealing character or driving plot. Certainly there’s nothing to rival the poignancy of Time After Time, or even the daffy joy of She Bop. Still, Broadway audiences just wanna have fun, and if it means giving a standing O to an uneven book and score, they’ll do it.
