I STAND FOR

San Diego Opera is back and better than ever. And that is because I stand for opera. You stand for opera. The San Diego community stands for opera. And we thank you immensely for that stand.

1

SD OPERA

‘Taking a stand’ is defined as asserting a viewpoint or publicly expressing an opinion, especially to say whether you support something, and to adopt a firm position about an issue. That is what we have all done for San Diego Opera and what we need to continue to do to keep our momentum and keep opera vibrant in our city. In that spirit, we present our new season – a season of strong women in opera – a fiery diva who stands up to a police state to save her lover; a traditional young woman who, although betrayed, makes the ultimate sacrifice to save her honor; and a modern opera diva who returns to her home town to take a stand to save her mentor’s beloved opera company, but must face the demons she left behind and the ones she lives with daily. The strength of such characters surely reflects the dedication and resolve of everyone who stood for San Diego Opera: patrons, donors, subscribers and the entire audience as well as artists, production team and staff. The success of this past year is a victory that is all of ours to celebrate. The future is ours to create. – CAROL LAZIER, Board President, San Diego Opera 2

TOSCA Giacomo Puccini Step into the web of politics, police brutality, betrayal, jealousy and murder in Puccini’s blood-soaked and intense Tosca. In Rome, the fiery and celebrated singer Floria Tosca has no idea that her life, and that of the man she loves, will irrevocably change the very next day. In a whirlwind of events, Tosca is forced to save her rebellious lover from the tainted hands of the treacherous chief of police and must take a stand while looking death in the face. Will she murder for the man she loves? Will she save her lover in time? What will become of her? With passionate arias and soaring, sensuous melodies, Tosca’s power and raw emotion will leave you breathless.

MADAMA BUTTERFLY Giacomo Puccini Hope, devotion, and betrayal find their fateful and desperate home in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly. Amidst the cherry blossoms of Nagasaki, a young woman makes a stand to support herself as a geisha after her disgraced father takes his life. Fate intervenes and brings her an American Naval Officer and she falls desperately in love. Not aware she is just a dalliance, she believes they are married and renounces her religion as he sails away promising to return. And return he does, ready to take their child and raise him with his American wife. Her father’s shadow looms as her heart breaks and she must choose to live with dishonor or die with honor. The music of Madama Butterfly is passionate, poignant and haunting, and will stay with you long after you’ve left the theatre.

West Coast Premiere

GREAT SCOTT Music by Jake Heggie Libretto by Terrence McNally

Divorced, at the end of another relationship, the reality of motherhood diminishing, Arden Scott, - the modern day woman and opera diva of Great Scott - is at a critical moment in her life. She returns to her hometown for the first time since becoming an international star, to help save her home opera company run by her mentor. The struggle of a make-or-break opera premiere is juxtaposed with the thriving Grizzlies, the home football team appearing in the Super Bowl, both happening on the same evening. Arden Scott must face the demons she left behind and the ones she lives with daily. Does disaster await her or perhaps there is hope and success on the horizon? The music of Great Scott has great heart and great lightness. With tenderness and humor, Heggie explores the music of the past while contrasting it with today’s music of popular culture. Based on the original story by Terrence McNally and directed by Jack O’Brien, Great Scott is sure to delight in every way.
