Bold Merchant Shocks 1909 London SDPB1: Sundays, March 31-May 19, 8pm (7 MT)
Fancy window displays, cosmetics counters, merchandise you can touch, and other marketing breakthroughs came to 1909 London through the genius of department store entreprenuer Harry Gordon Selfridge. The eight-part series follows his exploits. Jeremy Piven stars as the upstart American who taught the English how to shop. Using a mix of guile, boldness, seductive charm and a misrepresentation or two, Selfridge opens his department store to astonishment and some disdain. He comes to a city where customers are expected to know what they want and, 8

a difficult birth on board a Swedish trawler. Chummy makes a big decision that may mean major changes at Nonnatus House and Jenny Lee’s run-in with her old friend Jimmy brings out some feelings from her past she’d rather forget. Cynthia has her confidence shaken and doubts her ability as a midwife, while Jenny’s skills are tested in a setting that’s a far cry from the clinic and homes of Poplar. Sister Bernadette and Doctor Turner oversee an emotionally and technically challenging situation involving two sisters whose outdated views on childbirth put mother and child at risk.
when presented with it, to make their purchase and leave. A demanding customer in England is likely to get thrown out of the store. But Selfridge invents a shopping experience that is a cross between theater and fantasy fulfillment. Whatever the latest sensation, Selfridge hitches his star to it. In his personal life, as in his business, he is addicted to the sensational – creating complications for all concerned.

CPB Supports ‘Makers’ Project SDPB.org/Makers
SDPB contributed to the national PBS project Makers Women Who Make America with the help of a grant from CPB (Corporation for Public Broadcasting). Thank you. An SDPB Television series featuring women who are South Dakota Legislators led up to the ground-breaking national PBS documentary – Makers Women Who Make America. The three-hour national special looks at how women – in pursuit of their rights to a full and fair share of political power, economic opportunity and personal autonomy – have helped shape America. Learn more at SDPB.org/Makers. SDPB Television’s Local Makers series profiles five women who have been elected to South Dakota’s mostly male Legislature. Their stories aired as part of the Statehouse program on SDPB1 Television and are found at SDPB.org/Makers. The local component included Sen. Deb Peters of Hartford, Rep.
Peggy Gibson of Huron, Sen. Jean Hunhoff of Yankton, Sen. Angie Buhl of Sioux Falls and Rep. Susan Wismer of Britton. CPB promotes the growth and development of public media in communities throughout America. When Congress created CPB, it declared that developing public media is an important objective not only for private and local initiatives, but also “of appropriate and important concern” to the federal government. Congress also decided that establishing CPB as a private, notfor-profit corporation would facilitate the development of public media. Since 1968, CPB has been the steward of the federal government’s investment in public broadcasting and the largest single source of funding for public radio, television, and related online and mobile services. For approximately $1.35 per American per year, CPB provides essential operational support for the nearly 1,300 locally owned and operated public television and radio stations, which reach virtually every household in the country.
