THE WAR Returns with Extraordinary Stories In extraordinary times, there are no ordinary lives. THE WAR, the awardwinning seven-part series by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, proves that. The incredible film returns to SDPB Television five years after its premiere. The series airs on SDPB1 Television on July 31-Aug. 2 and Aug. 5-8 at 8pm (7 MT). THE WAR takes us inside the global struggle in an entirely new way, looking at the most powerful conflict in history through the personal stories of ordinary Americans who had extraordinary experiences. The 16hour series took six years to make. THE WAR focuses on the stories of citizens from four American communities – Waterbury, Connecticut; Mobile, Alabama; Sacramento, California; and Luverne, Minnesota, a farming community just 25 miles from Sioux Falls. These four communities could represent any community in the United States. One of the features of the series are the beautiful and moving newspaper columns of Al McIntosh, editor of the Rock County StarHerald in Luverne. Tom Hanks provides the voice of this articulate writer whose weekly columns expressed the pain, the fears and the hopes of people on the homefront. SDPB has numerous online resources

documenting World War II’s effect on South Dakota. Homefront South Dakota, a project of SDPB, includes the stories of South Dakotans who lived through that time, as well as other resources at dakotastories.org/homefront. Dakota Heroes, a one-hour radio documentary that earned a national Edward R. Murrow Award, details South Dakota’s war effort – SDPB.org/DakotaHero. The inspirational South Dakota World War II Memorial Dedication is found at SDPB.org/WWII. An extensive educational Web site at www.PBS.org/TheWar provides more information on World War II, the battles and related issues.

Health, nostalgia and love are among the themes for the SDPB Television Festival membership drive Aug. 11-19. Reptile Gardens Supports Appraisal Event

Thousands of people flocked to the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center in Rapid City last month to take part in Antiques Roadshow. The program, one of the most popular on television nationwide, will feature Rapid City and the area in three programs in 2013. Reptile Gardens, one of the area’s most popular tourist attractions, helped make the Antiques Roadshow appraisal event in Rapid City possible. Reptile Gardens is one of the sponsors of SDPB’s participation in the events on July 13-14. Thank you. Reptile Gardens, celebrating 75 years as one of the Black Hills’ top family attractions, is located on Highway 16 south of Rapid City. The business, which features a wide variety of reptiles from all over the world, is a long-time supporter of the Friends of SDPB. Program funders support programs and

outreach for a variety of SDPB projects. To support broadcasting that showcases South Dakota, call Ryan Howlett, Vice President of Development, at 800-456-0556.

John T. Vucurevich Foundation Backs Neutrino Day Project A grant from the John T. Vucurevich Foundation made SDPB’s participation in Neutrino Day possible. Thank you. SDPB participated in the annual Sanford Underground Research Facility science celebration in July with a radio program from nearly a mile underground, and amazing science demonstrations during the event. The dazzling science demos, by SDPB’s Science Guy, Steven Rokusek, are one of the highlights of the annual event at the former Homestake Mine in Lead. More than 900 attended the event on July 14.
