Make Your Gift Count – Twice!
By Ryan Howlett, VP of Development South Dakota Public Broadcasting fills a lot of roles for each and every South Dakotan each and every day as we continue to deliver the best educational, arts & culture, public affairs and sports programming available in our great state. By the end of 2013, we will have delivered more than 375 hours of locally produced television content and more than 2,080 hours of locally produced radio content – all free of charge to over 98% of the households in South Dakota. For some citizens, access to SDPB is the only way they receive their daily news, kids programming or emergency services information. SDPB is their bridge to the outside world. As we approach the end of the year, I ask you to consider SDPB in your end-of-the-year giving plans. Throughout 2013, we have talked a lot about the Evergreen Member Match. Van D. and Barbara B. Fishback of Brookings have generously agreed to match the funds given by every new Evergreen Member SDPB enrolls in 2013. Their gift has been a transformative project for SDPB’s sustaining membership program. By making an affordable, monthly gift, your support for SDPB will double, and provide a stable funding base for your community SDPB station. But like 2013, the matching gift program ends on December 31st. Giving to the Friends of SDPB is one way to ensure the best South Dakota-based media is available for you when you need and want it. As Van said, “We all need to plant trees for shade that we aren’t going to necessarily enjoy.” Please take advantage of this generous matching gift and join them in supporting SDPB for future generations of listeners and viewers. As we close out 2013 and the Evergreen Member Match, our promise to you is that we will continue to produce and air the best programming possible – we hope you can promise to join the Fishbacks in supporting SDPB. Please take two minutes and make your end-of-the-year, tax-deductible gift to SDPB today. You can become an Evergreen Member and take advantage of the matching gift program to double your gift, or make a one-time gift by either going online to www.sdpb.org/donate or by calling toll-free at 800-333-0789. Those of us at SDPB want to thank you for your kind generosity and extend our best wishes for a warm and wonderful holiday season.

Scotty Philip’s buffalo herd in Stanley County.
SDPB1: Monday, Dec. 9, 8pm (7 MT)
James “Scotty” Philip, a pioneer South Dakota rancher, is often credited with saving the American Bison from extinction. His story is told in The Buffalo King, a production of Nowlin Town Productions. The program airs on SDPB1 Television on Monday, Dec. 9, at 8pm (7 MT). Philip, and his wife, a Native American, came to Dakota Territory in the late 1800s. He set out to save the buffalo from extinction by buying a small herd of 74 buffalo. By the time of his death in 1911, the buffalo herd had grown to more than 1,000. Buffalo
from his herd have been used to restock herds across the nation, including South Dakota’s Custer State Park. The Executive Producer and Director of the documentary is Justin Koehler, a native Scotty Philip of West River South Dakota, who grew up on a ranch not far from the town of Philip which is named after the South Dakota pioneer.

Pioneers Hold on to History, Traditions What causes a region, a place, to imprint itself upon the people who are born and live there? What is the connection between landscape and memory? A new television documentary shows how a territory can endure in the minds of the descendants of those inhabitants after years, even after generations, have passed. At Home in Russia, at Home on the Prairie airs on SDPB1 Television on Wednesday, Dec. 25, at 5pm (4 MT). The program is one in a series produced by Prairie Public of North Dakota about the Germans from Russia who settled in our region of the Midwest. The documentary travels to an area typical of many German settlements on the Russian steppe – at one time a breadbasket of grain and other agricultural products. The Germans who settled the area are largely gone now, 6

New Britcom, Documentaries in December Ladies of Letters
Ladies of Letters joins the British comedies lineup on Saturday nights, beginning on Dec. 14 at 8:30pm (7:30 MT). Ladies of Letters is a gentle comedy drama about two very different widows who forge a friendship through letters. Maureen Lipman plays Irene Spencer and Anne Reid portrays Vera Small. The two ladies first meet at Vera’s daughter’s wedding and begin a correspondence that, beneath a veneer of civility, hides a constant battle of oneupmanship.
The Farm Crisis
Two British widows battle for bragging rights in Ladies of Letters.
SDPB1: Monday, Dec. 9, 9pm (8 MT)
The Farm Crisis is a 90-minute film produced by Iowa Public Television that examines the economic and personal disasters that afflicted the agriculture sector in the 1980s. The documentary explores why the farm crisis of the 1980s happened, and looks at some of the farm families who struggled and the men and women who fought so long and so loyally to help them. Among those interviewed are former South Dakota U.S. Sen. Tom Daschle. Narrated by Harry Smith.
Urban Relocation Program (1952-1973), the greatest voluntary upheaval of Native Americans during the 20th century. Dozens of American Indians representing tribal groups from across the West recall their first-hand experiences with relocation, including the early hardships, struggles with isolation and racism. Actor, musician and Oglala Lakota member Moses Brings Plenty, a native of the Pine Ridge Reservation, narrates this insightful film about this seldom-told chapter in American history.

Like many baby boomers, former NBC anchor Stone Phillips and his siblings found themselves caring for their aging parents. Ninety-two-year-old Vic, a World War II veteran, copes with chronic heart issues, although his mind and memory remain “as reliable as a Bob Gibson fastball.” Grace, his wife of 66 years, suffers from dementia, which robs the once-gregarious former teacher of her short-term memory. Moving with Grace, an intimate documentary Phillips produced and shot, follows this charming couple as they move out of the family home in Missouri and adapt to life first in a retirement community and later in an assisted-living facility.

Tinsel Tales includes “Homeless Christmas” by Lee Stringer, “Christmas Morning, 1949” with Sylvia Seymour and Paul Auster, and “Santaland Diaries” by David Sedaris.
Tinsel Tales 2 includes the delightful “Santa Claus, Private Eye” by the Duck’s Breath Mystery Theatre, as well as “All I wanted for Christmas” by NPR staffers. It also tells the incredible tale of the 1914 Christmas Truce during World War I, with historian Douglas Brinkley. Tune in. ’Tis the season.
