Are you ready to turnip the fun? Join Flowerman and Oil Can as Rock Garden Tour rocks the house in a new concert special on SDPB1 Television on Saturday, Dec. 6, at 8pm (7 MT). SPDB presents a unique concert experience as Flowerman (Producer Ted Heeren) and sidekick Oil Can (Tom Hurlbert) lead an eclectic mix of South Dakota trivia, song parodies, performance and more for North Grown Hardy: Celebrating 125 Years of South Dakota. Brace yourself for a wild and witty performance featuring the creative minds behind the SDPB Radio program Rock Garden Tour. North Grown Hardy was recorded earlier this year in front of a standing-room only audience at the Matthews Opera House in

Spearfish. North Grown Hardy, SDPB Television’s second concert special with Rock Garden Tour, features members of the Family Band; Pleasure Horse, a regional band that presents “cosmic country”; and an amusing assortment of South Dakota minutiae, witty garden banter, odd little South Dakota moments, indie/alternative rock and clever home-grown songs about our state. It celebrates the wonder and weirdness of living in South Dakota. “It’s a journey to a state of mind,” according to Director of SDPB Radio Joe Tlustos. “It celebrates what makes South Dakota unique.” The one-hour radio program that inspires the TV special is produced in partnership with the Fresh Produce advertising agency in Sioux Falls and has been part of the SDPB Radio lineup for several years. It airs on SDPB Radio on the last Saturday of the month at 8pm (7 MT). The first Rock Garden Tour television special, taped in Sioux Falls and aired last year, earned rave reviews.
(Above) Rock Garden Tour is the creation of Ted Heeren, known to fans as “Flowerman.” (Below) “Oil Can,” AKA Tom Hurlbert, keeps the puns coming in North Grown Hardy.

“Don’t drive like my brother.” Tom Magliozzi, and his brother Ray, for that matter, said it often on public radio’s longtime hit program Car Talk. Tom Magliozzi, who died on Nov. 3, will live on in the program, a staple of 4

SDPB Radio’s Saturday morning lineup at 9am (8 MT). Tom, who, along with his brother Ray, hosted NPR’s Car Talk for the last 37 years, died from complications of Alzheimer’s Disease. “Turns out he wasn’t kidding,” said Ray. “He really
couldn’t remember last week’s puzzler.” Tom was born June 28, 1937, in an East Cambridge, Massachusetts neighborhood filled with other Italian immigrant families. It was there that he and his younger brother Ray picked up the uniquely Boston-Italian style of expressing affection through friendly insults and teasing. That style was at the

carburetors and wheel bearings. “Since we weren’t making any money, we figured we might as well have fun,” said Tom. The brothers’ unique combination of hilarious, self-deprecating banter and trustworthy car advice was picked up by NPR in 1987, and Car Talk soon became the network’s most popular entertainment program ever, reaching audiences of more than 4 million people a week. The program has continued to be a top-rated show on NPR stations in syndication, even after the guys stopped recording new shows in 2012. Along with the solid car advice he dispensed on the radio show with his brother, Tom often took on the additional roles of philosopher king, life advisor, moral scold, and family counselor. “He’d always ask guys who were in a dispute with their wives or girlfriends one question: ‘Would you rather be right, or would you rather be happy?’”
Tom and Ray Magliozzi at work in Car Talk Plaza as they create a radio show.
“Our humility is what makes us great.” - Tom Magliozzi said Ray. “He and his brother changed public broadcasting forever,” said Doug Berman, the brothers’ longtime producer. “Before Car Talk, NPR was formal, polite, cautious … even stiff. By being entirely themselves, without pretense, Tom and Ray singlehandedly changed that, and showed that real people are far more interesting than canned radio announcers. And every interesting show that has come after them owes them a debt of gratitude. “I think the body of work he leaves will definitely be held up with great American humorists like the Marx Brothers and Mark Twain. He was a genius. And he happened to use that genius to make other people feel good and laugh.” The family asks that in lieu of flowers, or rotten fruit, fans of Tom make a donation in his memory to either their local NPR station or the Alzheimer’s Association.

heart of their banter with each other, and their listeners, on the radio show that made them beloved guests in millions of homes every Saturday morning. Tom was the first in his family to attend college, enrolling at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he earned a degree in Chemical Engineering. He hated putting on a suit and working in the 9-to-5 world. “He actually hated working in any world,” says his brother Ray. “Later on, when we were doing Car Talk, he would come in late and leave early. We used to warn him that if he left work any earlier, he’d pass himself coming in.” After a period spent happily as a Harvard Square bum, a house painter, an inventor, a successful Ph.D. student, and an auto mechanic, Car Talk became his focus, and Tom spent the rest of his working life doing what he was born to do. “Making friends, philosophizing, thinking out loud, solving people’s problems, and laughing his butt off,” says Ray. The radio show began as a fluke. Someone from Boston’s local public radio station, WBUR, booked an onair panel of six car mechanics from the area. Tom was the only one who showed up. He was impressive enough to be asked back the following week, when he brought along his fellow mechanic and kid brother, Ray, and Car Talk was born. They started off as volunteers, slowly injecting more and more humor and offtopic diversions into their discussions of

We’re Making Stuff Wilder and Making Stuff Colder with two hours of NOVA. In Wilder, the science series leads host David Pogue on a journey into innovations based on nature’s toolbox, from underwater wi-fi based on dolphin communication, to robotic “mules” and “cheetahs” for the military, to swarms of robotic bees. In Colder, Pogue explores the frontiers of cold science, from saving the lives of severe trauma patients to ultracold physics, where bizarre new properties of matter are the norm. SDPB Radio, SDPB Television and SDPB Online play an important role in the lives of South Dakotans. And you play an important role in SDPB. Each week, more than 100,000 people across the state take advantage of the best educational, arts and culture, public affairs and sports programming available in our great state. It’s your multi-media network. And the quality programming, educational materials and outreach are due to the generous support of South Dakotans. Businesses and organizations support a variety of activities as underwriters and we thank you. The biggest source of support for the programming budget comes through the contributions of people who choose to be members of Friends of SDPB. Thank you. December is the season of giving. Consider SDPB in your end-of-theyear giving plans. Go to www.sdpb.org/donate or call toll-free at 800-333-0789. There are plenty of ways to make a contribution. Here are a few. • Check or money order. • Stock and other properties. • Donations to Friends of SDPB endowments at foundations like the South Dakota Community Foundation or the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation. • Planned giving through your estate. • Donating your car or another vehicle. Whatever your plans as 2014 comes to a close, SDPB wishes you a warm and wonderful holiday season.

Be Evergreen and Get a Date (A lot of Them)
Evergreen Members of Friends of SDPB are getting a date – all of them, in fact, for 2015. While they last, the A Day in South Dakota Calendar will go to Evergreen Members. The calendar features the 12 winning photos from SDPB’s
Landscapes of South Dakota Photo Contest. Here’s how it works: As an Evergreen member, you divide your annual gift into monthly payments and agree to make that gift automatic, generally via credit card or electronic funds transfer from your bank. The deduction shows up every month on your statement and SDPB has the funds it needs to pay monthly and quarterly program costs. It’s easy and saves on time and mailings. Start the process today by going to SDPB.org/donate or calling 800-3330789. Thank you.
No Cover, No Minimum Presents Jami Lynn in Concert One of South Dakota’s most dynamic voices will be featured as Jami Lynn stars at a live taping of SDPB Television’s music series No Cover, No Minimum. You can enjoy a great concert, for free, and be part of the live studio audience as Lynn performs in SDPB’s Martin Busch Studio on Tuesday, Dec. 9, at 8pm (7 MT). Performing with Lynn on some songs will be Andrew Reinartz, Dalton Coffey, Nick Schweback and SDPB’s own Owen DeJong. No Cover, No Minimum, SDPB Television’s long-running music series, showcases local and regional acts as well as performers on the national level who come to South Dakota. To attend, please get your free tickets by calling 677-5861 or 800456-0766 before 5pm Dec. 9, or arrive at least a half-hour before the concert begins. The studio is in the Al Neuharth Media Center at the northeast corner of the University of South Dakota Campus in Vermillion. Plan to be seated by five minutes before the show begins. Lynn, a South Dakota singer/ songwriter who has earned national and international notice, began performing folk and bluegrass music at the age of 13 and playing the guitar and writing her own music by 16. As a student at USD, she recorded her first album, Dreamer, as Jami Lynn
& The Aquila Band. Sodbusters, her second full-length album was inspired by stories of her ancestors’ journey to Dakota Territory. In 2012, she joined forces with Black Hills flat-picker Dylan James, and the two released their duo album, “Cluck & Croon” in early 2013. The No Cover, No Minimum concert will air on SDPB1 Television later this year. No Cover, No Minimum airs on SDPB1 on Saturday nights at 10pm (9 MT). December concerts on SDPB1 Television include: • Dec. 13, Blues Bashers • Dec. 20, Billy Lurken • Dec. 27, 2014 South Dakota Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Check out the website at SDPB.org/ nocovernominimum.
