SDPB Expands Reach

SDPB Radio is expanding its service to South Dakota with the help of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. The Foundation’s Aberdeen Community Advisory Council approved a grant to the Friends of SDPB that will allow the network to place a news producer in northeastern South Dakota, increasing coverage of one of South Dakota’s most prosperous areas. With the use of SDPB Radio reports on air and online, Facebook and Twitter, SDPB Radio will offer in-depth reporting from the region, as well as familiarize the rest of South Dakota with an important economic and cultural area. In addition to the grant, the plan has received wide support in northeastern South Dakota. “The recent Knight Foundation grant and generous underwriting support from the Presentation Sisters, Northern State University, Aberdeen Convention and Visitors Bureau, Aberdeen Area Hotel Alliance and others validates the importance of sharing news and human interest stories from northeastern South Dakota,” said Paul McDonald, President of the Friends of SDPB Board and an Aberdeen Resident. “This expanded and rich content will truly complement SDPB’s current coverage of the people and fabric of South Dakota! This exciting initiative is also a testament to the focused strategic planning of the Friends of SDPB Board working in concert with the SDPB staff. We are excited to have our local content from northeast South Dakota disseminated throughout the state.” If you, or someone you know, has interest in serving as a news reporter covering the NE region of the state, please contact our Director of Radio Joe Tlustos at 605-202-1597 or Joe.Tlustos@state.sd.us. It premieres on Thursday, Feb. 7, at 8:30 pm (7:30 MT). The 17 minutes of silent film included in the program reveals culture and lifestyles of the past. The film was provided by the South Dakota State Historical Society. We’ll learn how the historic film was discovered, look

at some of the same locations a century later and see some vintage photographs, as well. The program also will become part of SDPB Online’s educational resources with suggested discussion topics and activities for classroom use at SDPB.org/Edu.

Women’s Contributions Celebrated SDPB and PBS honor the contributions of women to our country with the premiere of the PBS documentary Makers Women Who Make America as SDPB Television continues the Local Makers series with profiles of three South Dakota women Legislators in February. The SDPB series leads up to the groundbreaking national PBS documentary – Makers Women Who Make America – on Tuesday, Feb. 26 at 7pm (6 MT). The three-hour national special looks at how women – in pursuit of their rights to a full and fair share of political power, economic opportunity and personal autonomy – have helped shape America over the past 50 years. SDPB Television’s Local Makers series profiles five women who have been elected to South Dakota’s mostly male Legislature. Their stories air as part of the Statehouse program on SDPB1 Television on Fridays at 9pm (8 MT). February profiles include: Feb. 8 – Sen. Jean Hunhoff of Yankton Feb. 15 – Sen. Angie Buhl of Sioux Falls Feb. 22 – Rep. Susan Wismer of Britton. In January, the television series looked at Sen. Deb Peters of Hartford and Rep. Peggy Gibson of Huron. In addition, SDPB Radio profiled women leaders in science, research, business, education and the arts. You can find these South Dakota stories, as well as links to national resources, at SDPB.org/Makers. The national program looks at history through the perspectives of those who lived

through historic milestones. Makers looks at key moments in the Women’s Movement, such as the publication of The Feminine Mystique in 1963 and the battles to end discriminatory laws and practices over the following decades. It also tells the surprising and unknown stories of women who broke barriers in fields from the coal mines of West Virginia to the boardrooms of Madison Avenue. And it will take the story to today, when a new generation is both defending and questioning the legacy of their mothers. SDPB’s Local Makers project is supported by a grant from CPB (Corporation for Public Broadcasting).

PBS NewsHour

Each day, PBS NewsHour will look at aspects of the Newtown massacre and other crimes.

Guns in America

SDPB1: Tuesday, Feb. 19, 8pm (7 MT) SDPB2: Friday, Feb. 22, 6 & 11pm (5 & 10 MT)

In 1775, it took the Minuteman roughly fifteen seconds to load, aim, and fire each musket at the advancing British Redcoats. In 2012, at a primary school in Newtown, Conn., Adam Lanza was able to fire off dozens of rounds with an assault-type weapon in sixty seconds. Gun technology has evolved. Has our culture?

Frontline Raising Adam Lanza SDPB1: Tuesday, Feb. 19, 9pm (8 MT) SDPB2: Wednesday, Feb. 20, 8pm (7 MT)

Frontline examines the life of a young man and the town he changed forever. Adam Lanza left behind a trail of death and destruction, but little else. The mass killer had no known friends, no diary. He destroyed his computer and any evidence it might have provided. His motives, and his life, remain largely a mystery. Who was Adam Lanza?

NOVA Mind of a Rampage Killer

SDPB1: Wednesday, Feb. 20, 8pm (7 MT) SDPB2: Thursday, Feb. 21, 6 & 11pm (5 & 10 MT)

What makes a person walk into a theater or a church or a classroom full of students and open fire? Can science help us understand these horrific events and provide clues as to how to prevent them in the future? NOVA investigates new theories that the most destructive rampage killers are driven not by the urge to kill, but the wish to die.

The Path to Violence

SDPB1: Wednesday, Feb. 20, 9pm (8 MT) SDPB2: Friday, Feb. 22, 7pm (6 MT)

Ever since the tragedy in Columbine, schools and law enforcement have developed strategies to prevent attacks. More than 120 school assaults have been thwarted in the past 10 years. But recent attacks reveal a gaping hole in our safety net. Is the country ready to have a national conversation about the balance between school safety and civil liberties that interventions, including gun control, require?

On Call Mental Health

SDPB1: Thursday, Feb. 21, 7pm (6 MT) SDPB2: Monday, Feb. 25, 11am (10 MT)

SDPB’s weekly medical program will dig into the mental health issues that may lead to an act of violence.

South Dakota Focus Gun Control – School Safety SDPB1: Thursday, Feb. 21, 8pm (7 MT) SDPB2: Wednesday, Feb. 27, 11am (10 MT)

Season III of Downton Abbey continues in February with the premieres of the last three episodes. In Episode Five, tensions build as Robert and Cora stop speaking to each other and the servants shun Matthew’s mother. In Episode Six, life changes is big ways for several characters and the annual cricket match leads to trouble. In Episode Seven, the final episode of Season III, there’s romance in the air, and more crises developing for Season IV, expected in early 2014. New episodes air at 8pm (7 MT) on Sundays, Feb. 3, 10 and 17. The immediate past episode encores just before the new episode with Episodes Four (Feb. 3) and Five (Feb. 10) at 7pm (6 MT); and Episodes Six (Feb. 17) and Seven (Feb. 24) at 6pm (5 MT).

two-hour special that reveals a spectacular new space-based vision of our planet. Produced in extensive consultation with NASA scientists, NOVA takes data from earth-observing satellites and transforms it into dazzling visual sequences, each one exposing the intricate and surprising web of forces that sustains life on earth. Viewers witness how dust blown from the Sahara fertilizes the Amazon; how a vast submarine “waterfall” off Antarctica helps drive ocean currents around the world; and how the sun’s heating up of the southern Atlantic gives birth to a colossally powerful hurricane.

SDPB1: Wednesday, Feb. 13, 7pm (6 MT) SDPB2: Tuesday, Feb. 19, 5 & 8pm (4 & 7 MT)

For thousands of years, wolves hunted buffalo across the vast North American plains, until the westward settlement of the continent saw the virtual extinction of these vast herds and their predators. However, this ancient relationship was not lost altogether and continues uninterrupted in only one location – the northern edge of Canada’s central plains in a place named Wood Buffalo National Park. Today, the descendants of those ancient buffalo and wolves still engage in epic lifeand-death dramas. Their story is captured by a lone filmmaker who has followed them for more than 20 years.

Funders

Program Funders recognize the importance of lifelong learning by providing support for SDPB programs in South Dakota. Program funders give $5,000 or more in support of SDPB programs. Thank you.

Aberdeen Funders Expand SDPB Radio’s Reach SDPB is adding a new news producer to its roster, thanks to the generosity of three funders in Aberdeen. The Knight Foundation, Northern State University and the Presentation Sisters will enable the network to add a reporter for the northeastern area of the state, expanding our coverage into one of the most econonomically dynamic areas of South Dakota. The major funder is the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, via a grant approved by the Aberdeen Community Advisory Council. The Knight Foundation focuses on projects that promote informed and engaged communities. The Knight Donor-Advised Fund program aims to improve the quality of life in the U.S. communities where the Knight brothers owned newspapers. In this case, that would be the Aberdeen American News. Northern State University’s mission is to be a premier residential, liberal arts institution characterized by outstanding instruction, extraordinary community relations and unparalleled co-curricular opportunities. The Aberdeen school is part of the South Dakota university system directed by the South Dakota Board of Regents. The Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary are a vowed faith community who share the mission of Jesus.

Learn. Dream. Grow.

They have had a presence in the region since 1880 (Dakota Territory). They work for justice, to alleviate oppression and to promote human dignity, especially among the poor. The new SDPB Radio news producer for northeastern South Dakota will focus on Aberdeen and the surrounding area, bringing news and feature stories to the air that focus on economy, arts, government, culture and more. Program Funders support a variety of SDPB programs and projects. To become a program Funder, or to find out more about upcoming SDPB projects, contact Ryan Howlett at 800-456-0556.
