Generous Gift Supports Friends of SDPB Become an Evergreen Member of Friends of SDPB this year, and your gift will be matched! The generous Evergreen Member match is funded by Van D. and Barbara B. Fishback of Brookings. This special couple wanted to find a way to give back to the state in a way that could impact all South Dakotans. Throughout 2013, the couple will match every new SDPB Evergreen member. An Evergreen member is an SDPB supporter whose gift renews automatically. Education is an important part of the Fishbacks’ lives, and one of the main drivers for the gift. “We have such confidence in the quality programming both on television and radio,” said Barbara Fishback. “I rely on SDPB for accurate and in-depth information, and family friendly programming. It really is your most reliable source.” Helping to build a strong base of funding
far into the future was the reason for Van Fishback, a retired banker. “We all have to plant trees for shade that we aren’t going to enjoy,” he said. “Our hope is that this gift can strengthen and broaden the Van D. and Barbara B. entire SDPB program Fishback through having many South Dakotans join us as SDPB Evergreen Members.” The Fishbacks both have a long history in South Dakota. She grew up in the Flandreau area and attended SDSU and had a career as a teacher and civic leader. He is a fifthgeneration South Dakotan and retired president and CEO of First Bank & Trust and Fishback Financial Corporation, South Dakota’s largest family owned bank. Both companies are based in Brookings.
SDPB Television is celebrating Antiques Roadshow and the upcoming South Dakota shows with special editions of Relative Riches on Monday, March 4, at 7pm (6 MT) & Sunday, March 17, at 3pm (2 MT), and Big & Little on Monday, March 11, at 7pm (6 MT). Viewers who choose to support Friends of SDPB will have the option of getting copies of the South Dakota programs (after they air) and SDPB’s behind the scenes program, all recorded during Antiques Roadshow’s appraisal event last summer in Rapid City. The programs recorded at Rapid City will premiere on April 22, 29 and May 6. Thousands of people from across the region braved the 104 degree heat to bring their treasures to the state’s first-ever Antiques Roadshow appraisal event last July 14. Antiques Roadshow airs on SDPB1 Television on Mondays at 7pm (6 MT) and Sundays at 5pm (4 MT). Antiques Roadshow is sponsored by Liberty Mutual Insurance and Subaru. Additional funding is provided by public television viewers. Antiques Roadshow 6

Meet Mr. Selfridge, the brash American who changed the way Brits shopped. Masterpiece Classic presents the eightpart Mr. Selfridge on SDPB1 Television on Sundays, March 31-May 19 at 8pm (7 MT). Harry Gordon Selfridge, played by Jeremy Piven, opened his London department store to astonishment and some disdain in 1909. Fancy window displays, cosmetics counters, merchandise you can touch, and other marketing breakthroughs had to start somewhere, and they sprang from the genius of Chicago native Selfridge, who combined guile, taste, boldness, the poise of a swindler, and the seductive charm of a Casanova – qualities that spelled success but also trouble. 8
Learn. Dream. Grow.
The cast includes a showgirl who becomes the sexy “face of Selfridge’s”; the entreprenuer’s wife; a tempermental window designer; a spunky shop girl who gets the lucky break of her life thanks to a chance encounter with Selfridge; and a newspaper editor who is Selfridge’s gobetween in courting English money and mistresses.
Jeremy Piven plays ground-breaking entreprenuer Harry Selfridge.

Big Band Spotlight Celebrates 20th Anniversary
SDPB Radio Host Karl Gehrke has been bringing the sounds of the Big Band Era to listeners for 20 years. Big Band Spotlight celebrates its anniversary this year with the best of swing, bop and jive from the 1940s to the present. The one-hour show airs on SDPB Radio on Sundays at 10pm (9 MT). Each week, Gehrke shares a wealth of knowledge about the sounds, band leaders, players and arrangers who create and continue this unique form of music. Gehrke also hosts SDPB Radio’s Dakota Midday talk show on weekdays at Noon (11 MT).

Grant Brings Rock Garden Tour to TV One of SDPB Radio’s most creative programs – Rock Garden Tour – is coming to SDPB Television later this year thanks to the support of the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation. Rock Garden Tour is a quirky mix of music and fun. The show mixes two of Producer Ted Heeren’s favorite things: gardening and rock ‘n’ roll. What sprouts is totally unique radio. “It’s a journey to a state of mind,” according to Director of SDPB Radio Joe Tlustos. The show is hosted by Flower Man, with help from his sidekick, Oil Can. The show mixes rock music, gardening tips, road trips around South Dakota, original music and even parodies. They may even drop in on community celebrations or search out long lost towns. In the end, it celebrates the things that make South Dakota a great state. “It doesn’t make fun of South Dakota,” Tlustos said. “It celebrates what makes South
Dakota unique.” The television project will feature a live performance of the show with added bonuses like cartoons or animation. The Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation supports nonprofit organizations and programs by making grants across a wide spectrum of charitable needs and interests. More than 200 worthy organizations and programs receive support from more than $10 million in grants SFACF makes annually. Program Funders support a variety of SDPB programs and projects. To become a Program Funder for this project, or to find out more about upcoming SDPB projects, contact Ryan Howlett at 800-456-0556.
