Emily Graslie, Rapid City native, YouTube star and Chief Curiosity Correspondent at Chicago’s Field Museum hosts Prehistoric Road Trip, a new three-episode miniseries from WTTW Chicago that premieres on SDPB June 17. In the series, Graslie embarks on an epic road trip through America’s fossil country, including over eight sites in South Dakota, where she encounters mysterious creatures and bizarre ecosystems that have shaped Earth as we know it. With her trademark sense of adventure and wit, Graslie explores the American West from above and below to better understand our planet’s past and what new discoveries might mean for its future. In celebration of SDPB’s very special connection to Emily Graslie and Prehistoric Road Trip, SDPB is partnering with the SD School of Mines & Technology (SDSMT), Youth in Science Rapid City, Inc., Badlands National Park and others for an exciting event.

Hello! I’m a big fan of SDPB. Some say I watch waaay toooo much SDPB1, 2, 3... I love the SDPB Magazine, as a guide to watching and listening, and as a valuable publication in its own right. The articles are interesting, well-written invitations to broadcasted events/programs. I think this magazine shows our state in a good light, which, in my opinion, is something we need right now. Plus, it’s just beautiful to look at! February’s edition especially made me want to write this letter. I’m looking forward to March’s edition! Thanks for listening! - Laurie B. I love the series Classical Stretch! I hope you put it on again, soon!! I also like Happy Yoga. Please continue these programs. I wish they could be just a little later, but I can DVR. - Julie L.

Thank you SDPB viewers and listeners for your valuable feedback. Write to our editor, Katy Beem, at katy.beem@sdpb.org. We look forward to hearing from you! April April2020 2020

by Katy Beem Diabetes can devastate. Often misunderstood as wholly related to over-consumption of sugar and sweets, Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes are chronic, progressive disorders that can damage essential body systems like the heart, kidneys, eyes and nerves. Inadequately controlled, diabetes can lead to heart attack or stroke, blindness, disabling nerve damage and amputated limbs. That’s the bad news. Ben Tiensvold has some good news. Tiensvold is the Coordinator for the South Dakota Diabetes Coalition (SDDC). Since the late 1970s, the SDDC has collaborated with the South Dakota Department of Health to galvanize diabetes fighters across South Dakota to prevent and address the disease in the state. Tiensvold says the South Dakota Diabetes State Plan, devised by healthcare workers, diabetes educators, and other stakeholders to reduce the burden of diabetes in the state, is making its mark. “In 2018, when we were just launching the state plan, we had six or seven diabetes prevention programs,” says 4

Learn. Dream. Grow.

Tiensvold. “We’re now up to 13 and continuing to add additional diabetes prevention programs, including virtual ones, across the state.” Geographic accessibility in our sparsely populated state is a key pillar for the SDDC, so 27 recognized Diabetes SelfManagement Education and Support Programs, or DSMES programs, are now available. “Platte and Rosebud are great examples of smaller communities that benefit from local education and support programs,” says Tiensvold. “If you’re living in that area and are newly diagnosed or experience a change in your diabetes, and you need to go to a class that meets six times, a local program takes away the time and gas costs of having to travel to Mitchell or Rapid.” Socio-economic accessibility is also an issue. Insurance coverage of education programs can be missed opportunities. “The Coalition advocates to see if insurance companies or other organizations, like maybe an employer, for example, might cover the cost for a patient to participate in

the National Diabetes Prevention Program,” says Tiensvold. For Tiensvold, diabetes is both a professional and personal concern. His father’s Type 2 diagnosis was Ben Tiensvold. a turning point that helped Tiensvold understand intimately the value of diabetes education. “He was really not understanding how to test his blood sugar,” says Tiensvold. “He was having trouble with his blood sugar monitor not working and not really understanding diabetes as far as how he can change his diet and exercise, do carb-counting. It was really going to diabetes education that helped him to fully understand how he can live a healthy and active life, but still enjoy life as well. For him, it really came down to that education and support.”

A generation ago, less than 3% of Americans had diabetes – today it’s almost 10%. It’s predicted that by 2025, half of the U.S. population will have diabetes or pre-diabetes. The new documentary Blood Sugar Rising follows the prevalence of diabetes in the U.S, where diabetes and pre-diabetes affect over 100 million people and costs more than $325 billion each year. Blood Sugar Rising puts human faces to the statistics, exploring the history and science of the illness through portraits of Americans whose stories shape the film. “Today, perhaps more than any time since insulin was discovered in the 1920s, diabetes has reached an inflection point in America,” observes Blood Sugar Rising WGBH Executive Producer Judith Vecchione. “It’s a time of great peril and great hope. The peril is in the skyrocketing rates of diabetes we’re seeing, for men, women, and children. At the same time, there’s great excitement in the diabetes community. The most amazing advances are being made in understanding the biological facts of diabetes and offering new tools to help individuals manage their disease. “ According to 2017 data from the South Dakota Department of Health, 11% of South Dakotans have been told by a doctor that they have diabetes. At 17%, American Indians demonstrate a significantly higher prevalence of diabetes than white South Dakotans at 9%. In Somewhere South, Howard travels the changing South in search of the dishes that connect us all — dumplings, hand pies, porridge and more — but which are expressed in delightfully different ways across cultures. Along the way, she meets new friends and teachers, and as she says, discovers “how breaking bread and sharing a meal can create a comfortable place to have meaningful, memorable conversations.” SDPB1: Fridays, 8pm (7 MT)

Science, learning and creativity are at the center of SDPB’s latest episode of Dakota Life. Makerspace at Augustana Take a campus visit to Augustana University in Sioux Falls, where Education majors have the opportunity to experience cutting-edge classroom tools through Makerspace workshops. Robots, iPads and circuit boards help students of any level engage with a variety of subjects in a way that feels like play. Assistant Professor of Education Michelle Powers applied for and received a grant from the Oliver Innovation Fund to help future teachers learn to incorporate Makerspace in their classrooms. “Makerspace is a concept that schools are employing to help students learn how to solve problems basically with both everyday tools and technology tools. It’s also a way to explore learning concepts like robotics and coding.” says Powers. Sanford PROMISE Community Lab South Dakota students from K-12 through graduate school can explore science and research at the PROMISE Community Laboratory, a high-tech classroom space in Sioux Falls. Sanford Research, the non-profit research organization partnered by Sanford Health and the University of South Dakota, operates the PROMISE (Program for the Midwest Initiative in Science Exploration) Lab, which offers hands-on science activities and lab tours for South Dakota’s next generation of scientists. 10 10

Rapid City Robotics Meet Rapid Acceleration Team #4593, the robotics club of Rapid City-area high school students whose team spirit and love of competition energize their participation in STEM activities. Field Experience at Field-to-Table In 2001, Ray Hall, a farmer based in Burbank, opened his field to students to learn about corn and soybean production. Hall retired in 2006, but since 2008 Greg and Tara Pirak, owners of Gayville’s Valley Ag Supply, have continued the program. Held every September the week after Labor Day, the Field-to-Table field experience in 2019 had over 790 grade school and middle school students from 18 schools learning about farm operations, growing local commodities, and how we use crops in our daily lives. W.S. Merwin: To Plant a Tree shows how the writer’s tangible actions to nurture his surrounding environment go hand-in-hand with his poetry, offering insight and humor on the human experience and providing a refreshing sense of the relevance of poetry in our lives today. Turkey Creek residents are descendants of former slaves who settled on the Gulf Coast in the 1860s. They have been stewards of the creek’s rich wetland habitat for generations. Now, developers have set their sights on this prime real estate, and the powerful forces of Mother Nature also threaten Turkey Creek’s survival. America ReFramed Come Hell or High Water: The Battle for Turkey Creek follows the painful but inspiring journey of Derrick Evans, a Boston teacher who moves home to coastal Mississippi when the graves of his ancestors are bulldozed to make way for the sprawling city of Gulfport. Over the course of a decade, Evans and his neighbors stand up to powerful corporate interests and politicians and face Hurricane Katrina and the BP oil disaster in their struggle for self-determination and environmental justice. SDPB2: Tuesday, April 21, 7pm (6 MT) & 11pm (10 MT); Saturday, April 25, 9pm (8 MT)

The story of a drug company that pushed opioids by bribing doctors and committing insurance fraud. Produced with the Financial Times, Frontline Opioids, Inc. reveals the story of how Insys Therapeutics profited from a fentanyl-based painkiller 50 times stronger than heroin. Follow the investigation of the corruption behind the company’s rise and the federal prosecution that brought it down. SDPB1: Tuesday, April 21, 8pm (7 MT) SDPB2: Wednesday, April 22, 8pm (7 MT)

The story follows a group of child Holocaust survivors who are transported to the Calgarth Estate by Lake Windermere, England in August 1945. Carrying only the clothes they wear and a few meager possessions, they bear the emotional and physical scars of all they have suffered. Child psychologist Oscar Friedmann is charged with looking after the children. He and his team of counselors have four months to help the children begin to heal and reclaim their lives. The Windermere Children is the stark, moving and ultimately redemptive story of the bonds the children make with one another, and of how the friendships forged at Windermere sustain them as they work to rebuild their lives in the U.K. SDPB1: Sunday, April 5, 9pm (8 MT) & 10:30pm (9:30 MT)

Helping All South Dakota’s Children “PBS KIDS available on multiple platforms is equivalent academically to a quality preschool.” -Northwestern University study Compared to the national average of 65%, 76% of South Dakota’s kids under the age of 6 have all available parents in the workforce. South Dakota is one of four states in the nation without state-funded Pre-K education. SDPB’s Early Learning Initiative takes high-quality PBS KIDS educational resources, aligns them with South Dakota Early Learning Guidelines that were developed by a state-wide panel of professionals and parents, and connects this dynamic curriculum to everyone – teachers, daycare providers, parents and caregivers – to help all South Dakota’s kids get the best possible start. Meet Kevin Nelson, SDPB’s Early Childhood Education Specialist, who’s working to connect more young learners with SDPB resources. Born in Sioux Falls and raised in Salem, SD, Nelson graduated from Arlington High School. He earned his undergraduate and master’s degree at Northern State and an educational specialist degree from USD. “I come from a family that has four generations of educators that goes back almost one hundred years,” says Nelson. “I started my teaching career at Warner, SD, as an elementary and middle school teacher and coach.” Next, Nelson was elementary principal at Chester, SD, before moving to take the same role at Beresford. In 2006, Nelson was named National Distinguished Principal by the SD Association of Elementary School Principals. Nelson is passionate about connecting SDPB’s and PBS’s resources to young learners. “The goal of the Early Learning Initiative (ELI) is to use the resources of SDPB and PBS to make sure every child in South Dakota has the opportunity to start kindergarten ready-to-learn. With over 50 years of trusted educational programming and resources – including curriculum-based 20 20

learning games, apps and activities, on-demand programming and a 24/7 children’s channel – we believe we’re in the best position to help teachers, caregivers and parents, and ultimately our kids, reach that goal! By aligning PBS content with The South Dakota Early Learning Guidelines (SDELG) and partnering with other early learning organizations in our state, SDPB is in a great position to make a real difference in the lives of our youngest citizens.” He illustrates the particular need in the state. “Most South Dakota children spend their day outside the home in a childcare or preschool setting. ELI aims to deliver curriculum resources and professional development for preschool and childcare professionals. But we also will provide needed resources to parents and families of early learners in a home setting.” Currently, Nelson and SDPB are working to align the SDELG with PBS content and programming. “We’re also working on the most effective way to make the full array of PBS and SDPB resources available to parents and families as they work athome with their early learners,” says Nelson. “Since I have started working at SDPB, I have found it amazing how many children and adults tell me about the PBS and SDPB programming that they love and have had an influence in their lives,” says Nelson. “From Sesame Street and Mister Rogers, to Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood and Wild Kratts, public media has had, and continues to have, a very positive influence on many people of all ages!” To learn more, visit SDPB.org/ELI or email kevin.nelson@sdpb.org. SDPB’s Early Learning Initiative is made possible, in part, by generous donors. See p. 26.

SDPB Sustainer Spotlight Judy Holt, Webster

Born and raised in Watertown, Judy Holt was an addiction counselor for 14 years before semi-retiring. Now she works part-time at an assisted living facility and is an at-home seamstress under the shingle Judy’s Sew and Sew. Judy joined the Friends of SDPB in 1998 and recently became a sustaining member. Favorite programs on SDPB? “Vanished South Dakota is a great program. I like most of the programs produced by SDPB. Since I was born and raised in South Dakota, particularly now that I am in the winter of my years, I really like the stuff SDPB does: history and stories about people, like The Stavig Letters. So much history, so close to me. Love it! And NOVA has always been a favorite! Frontline, Nature, Masterpiece and the British shows.” How do you watch and listen? “I listen to the radio quite a bit: TED Radio Hour, Wait, Reveal. I’m up with the birds so I love the BBC. I don’t have cable; I have a Roku. Cable, that’s a cajillion dollars a month. I can get PBS with my little digital antenna. And that’s always been the case.”

Why did you become an SDPB supporter? “I think PBS and NPR are investigative. It just seems it’s more intelligent broadcasting. That’s why I’ve always listened. I like to know what’s going on and kind of broaden my views and I just never found that with the big networks. Predominantly, because Judy Woodruff and all those gals, I’ve been watching them for years and many times other sides are presented. Even with Shields & Brooks on the NewsHour, other sides are presented. I feel that they take the time to look into things to make sure they’re saying it right. I really believe they do.”

“My son and I, we would sit and watch Mister Rogers when he was a little kid. I enjoyed the mugs and premiums and stuff, but then I decided, ‘You know, I’m not paying for cable. I get this great programming. And so I’m just going to contribute.’ And then I just thought it’d be easy. And I’ve been a sustaining member now and it’s only 10 bucks a month. And then you get Passport.” “I just think PBS is the greatest. Everyone should watch it. They might be smarter if they did!” Thank you for your support, Judy! You help make SDPB programs possible for all South Dakotans.

The SECURE Act and Charitable Giving In January 2020, President Trump signed the SECURE Act as part of the government’s spending bill. The new law took effect January 1. The intention of the SECURE Act, which stands for “Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement” — is to strengthen retirement security. Individuals can now contribute to their IRAs past the age of 70½ to allow more time to save for retirement. The legislation also changed the age at which one must start taking Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) from age 70½ to 72. Another

change is for folks who have named someone other than their spouse as the beneficiary of their IRA, they must now withdraw the entire amount within 10 years, as opposed to over their lifetimes. For charitable giving, donors who may not want non-spousal beneficiaries to receive their IRA proceeds within 10 years, a testamentary charitable gift annuity or a testamentary charitable remainder trust may be a solution. According to James Lange, a contributor on retirement for Forbes Magazine, “In many

situations it will make more sense to leave your IRA to a charitable trust than to leave it to your children directly. It is possible, even likely, your children will actually end up with more money than if you left the IRA to a charitable trust than if you left it to them outright. After the SECURE Act many IRA owners that never had a good reason to closely look at a charitable remainder trust as the beneficiary of their IRA should now consider one.” To discuss giving to SDPB from your IRA, please contact Friends at 605-677-5862.
