John Sall, left, joined family and friends for a trip to Norway in 1992.

Dr. John Sall Estate Presents Major Gift Dr. John Sall of Sioux Falls was fascinated by the world around him and an ardent advocate of education. Through his estate, the Friends of SDPB has received a $495,000 gift. “He was interested in education and enlightenment,” said longtime family friend Steve Loper of New Jersey. “He wanted to make sure he contributed something.” Dr. Sall was born on April 4, 1947, and died on July 6, 2010, at the age of 63. As a child, he suffered from Guillain-Barré syndrome and underwent extensive physical therapy to overcome the resulting muscle weakness. He eventually recovered, but battled medical problems throughout his life, Loper said. “He was very bright.” He graduated at the top of his medical school class and became a doctor. He went on to become founder and a partner in the Central Plains Clinic. Loper said Dr. Sall was a true renaissance man. He was a very busy doctor, but he had many other interests.

He loved to read and would often bring dozens of magazines along when he traveled so he could catch up on his reading. “After he died, his mail was forwarded here,” Loper said, “and I was getting two or three magazines every day.” His interests ranged from Smithsonian to medical journals. “He was an avid gardener and had a nice little garden behind his home,” Loper said. “Of course, he was very busy at work and by the end of the summer the weeds would catch up with him and it looked like a jungle.” When Dr. Sall visited the East Coast, one of his favorite destinations was Longwood Gardens, a horticultural showplace in Delaware. Dr. Sall also took time out for travel. One of his favorite trips was to Scandinavia, especially since he had Norwegian roots. “He loved photography and would always send copies to friends.” Another hobby was coin collecting. Most importantly, Loper said, “he

was a very generous man. Anyone who knew him would say that.” “He was very generous to patients and if they had trouble paying, he would get fees waived, especially for families who had young children.” In the final years of his life, he was forced to cope with the complications of diabetes and by 2005, his health went on a downward slide until his death in 2010, Loper said. John Sall’s legacy lives on. He designated that 30 percent of his estate go to South Dakota Public Broadcasting. As a member of Friends of SDPB, he indicated that his favorite programs were the PBS NewsHour, Antiques Roadshow and radio’s Morning Edition. His generosity is making a big impact in this region. In addition to personal bequests, he also left money to the University of South Dakota Medical School, St. John’s University, O’Gorman High School and Minnesota Public Radio.

Owen DeJong and Jim Clark Keep the Notes Flowing on SDPB Radio

If you were to imagine SDPB Radio’s weekdays local music programs as orchestras, the dueling maestros are Owen DeJong and Jim “Uncle Jimmo” Clark. DeJong has hosted Morning Classics since the mid-1990s. He’s an accomplished violinist, and has been playing for 54 years. “When I was not even 5 years old, my Aunt took some violin lessons, and she didn’t like it, and somehow

4

Learn. Dream. Grow.

my family ended up with that violin. It was kept up in a closet, and once in a while, my Mom and Dad would let me take it down and just kind of scrape on it and make some sounds.” At age 9, he started taking lessons at Concordia Conservatory in Fargo, North Dakota, and his musical education has continued ever since. His introduction to “fiddle” came when he was asked to play in a Country-Western themed production at the USD “Strollers” show in 1972. “Afterward, we decided to keep the band together and play gigs. One thing led to another, and here I am today!” Since then, he has

played old-time music and country fiddle throughout South Dakota as part of the Poker Alice band, the Public Domain Tune Band and other combos. Though his first master’s degree from the University of South Dakota was in English, years later, DeJong returned to USD to receive his second Master’s, in Violin Performance. He joined SDPB radio in 1997, and shares his passion for classical music with fans throughout the state. His philosophy behind Morning Classics is to inform and enlighten. “If there’s a significant event

going on, or if there’s a significant composer’s birthday, I’ll build a program around that. In general, but not always, I like to start each show with something kind of short, then save the longer works for the second and third hour. My ideal goals are that my show should both entertain and educate.” Jim Clark is known to his fans as “Uncle Jimmo” and his fans (“jazz babies”) are found throughout South Dakota. “I got my start in radio in 1970, at the tender age of 15, at WILT-AM, a 50-watt station in Tafuna, American Samoa” where his family lived at the time. “As a kid, I was aware of Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Benny Goodman, and Dave Brubeck, but didn’t listen to their music. As a teen-ager, I was drawn to rock music like most young people my age, particularly to the Beatles. At WILT, we had three jazz albums in the library: A Charlie Byrd live recording, another live recording by Herbie Mann, and Miles Davis’s Sketches of Spain. I took all three

home, listened to them and liked them very much. I guess that was the starting point.” After working at radio stations around the country, and sampling jazz over the years, Clark finally put all his focus into jazz. “When I finally committed to jazz, that was it … there was no turning back.” He believes in the universality of the music. “The great thing about jazz is that a performer can literally come from anywhere in the world. Jazz by its very nature is democratic and egalitarian, but it’s also based on meritocracy. I like to think that the best players will eventually be recognized. Jazz is rooted in the big city but anyone anywhere can enjoy it through recordings and, if they’re lucky, in live performance. That’s why it’s so important to support our local jazz musicians.” Since he came to South Dakota in 2001, the man known as “Uncle Jimmo” has gained a dedicated core audience across the state. “My loyal listeners mean everything to me. Without them

“My ideal goals are that my show should both entertain and educate.”

- Owen DeJong

I’m nothing and what I do would be pretty much pointless. Therefore, there is a responsibility and obligation on my part to present the best show I possibly can. I don’t take this responsibility lightly. I want to let my listeners know my sincere appreciation for staying with me for the past fourteen years, through thick and thin, and that I’ll try to continue to strive for excellence. My listeners are the best! “All I can say is thanks!”

“My loyal listeners mean everything to me.”

Horrifying real-life footage shot by Alfred Hitchcock is featured in Frontline Memory of the Camps. The documentary shows the first horrifying footage shot as Allied troops entered the Nazi death camps. Frontline reconstituted the forgotten reels and script and showed them in public for the first time 30 years ago. The show is revisited to mark Holocaust Memorial Day, which beings at sundown April 15.

On the ground, American officers found themselves faced with a moral dilemma: whether to follow official policy and evacuate only U.S. citizens and their dependents, or to go beyond orders and save some of the Vietnamese men, women and children. It was April 1975. During the chaotic final days of the Vietnam War, as the North Vietnamese Army closed in on Saigon, South Vietnamese resistance crumbled. It happened so fast. The lives of thousands of South Vietnamese allies were hanging in the balance. Americans faced an impossible choice – who would go and who would be left behind to what was expected be be a cruel future. Last Days in Vietnam, a film presented by American Experience, tells a story of chaos, heroism and tragedy. The Oscar-nominated film, directed by Rory Kennedy, airs in conjunction with the 40th anniversary of the fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975. The 1973 Paris Peace Accords had forged a tenuous ceasefire between North and South Vietnam, and mandated the removal of almost all U.S. forces. As North Vietnam violated the ceasefire in 1975, President Gerald Ford asked Congress for an emergency appropriation to aid the beleaguered South Vietnamese government. The White House expected that neither Congress nor the American people would support it. Says then-Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, “We knew we were not going to get the $722 million. By that

The monthly half-hour program, the signature features magazine for SDPB Television, looks at the fascinating people, places and things that make up our great state. Here are some of the highlights for April: Keeping the Faith: In 1976, Jenny Peterson of Vermillion lost her sight and 100% of her skin after a severe

allergic reaction to a medicine she was given. In 2010, after medical advances were made in corneal transplants, she regained her vision and has written an inspirational book about keeping her faith, using notes from a journal her husband kept. Brown Earth Settlement – A small historic church is all that remains of the Flandreau Colony’s attempt to homestead in the Brown Earth Settlement in Grant County in the mid-1880s. Today, the church looks very much the same way it did when the Dakota built it, including dirt floors, original chairs, and a historic working organ. Civil Air Patrol: Sylvia Henkin – Sylvia Henken, 93, a prominent

figure in the Sioux Falls community, will receive the Congressional Gold Medal awarded to the Civil Air Patrol in recognition of members’ service during WW II. Dakota Life airs several times during the month to give viewers a chance to tune in. Past episodes are available at SDPB.org/DakotaLife. The program airs statewide on SDPB and nationwide on RFD-TV.

Historic Church at the Brown Earth Settlement.

Experts Examine Juvenile Justice in South Dakota South Dakota Focus will explore plans for “Juvenile & Criminal Justice Reform” in South Dakota on Thursday, April 9, at 8pm (7 MT), with an encore on Sunday, April 12, at 1pm (Noon MT). Guests include: • Pennington County State’s Attorney Mark Vargo. • Hughes County Sheriff Mike Leidholt. • South Dakota Department of Corrections Secretary Denny Kaemingk. • Brad Patterson, Director of Clinical & Prevention Services for Sioux Falls’ Carroll Institute. • Judge Steven Jensen, Presiding Judge of the First Judicial Circuit. SDPB’s signature public affairs program airs two to four times a month on Thursdays, generally with an encore on the following Sunday at 1pm (Noon MT). Tentative topics for April include Job Training on April 16, a salute to Vietnam Veterans on April 23, and a look at responsible social media use on April 30.

Inside Dakota Midday with Karl Gehrke SDPB Radio: Dakota Midday, weekdays, Noon (11 MT)

On Feb. 27, his third anniversary as host of Dakota Midday, Karl Gehrke reflected on his role with the show, his goals and what he’s accomplished. “The show is issue driven. It’s the conversation you have when you’re a citizen of South Dakota. The issues may be arts or politics or health or topics in the news, but they’re all part of the South Dakota conversation.” How does he select topics? “I ask myself ‘Is this important to South Dakotans?’ Everything else is secondary. My aim is to enlighten and to inform people about: “What is happening in South Dakota. “Life in South Dakota. “What matters to South Dakotans. “What’s entertaining to South Dakotans. 18

Learn. Dream. Grow.

“I’m helping to put the issues in context.”

Memorable interviews Like his program, his most memorable interviews include a wide variety of interests: a talk with former Gov. Frank Farrar, an interview with motorcycle racer Brittney Olsen, a conversation with Aberdeen teen Matt Guthmiller, who flew around the world. On Farrar: “He was in his 80s, still flying, still running, talking about his experiences … it was a conversation with an interesting guy who also happened to be a governor of South Dakota.”

About his role on Dakota Midday “I’d never done a live interview show when I applied for the job.” He did have nearly three decades of public radio experience on his side. “I’d done interviews for years, but I never did it

Brothers Ray and the late Tom Magliozzi are the voices behind The Best of Car Talk.

live.” His try-out at SDPB Radio cemented the job for him, although he’s pretty humble about it. “I guess I wasn’t the worst person. I didn’t swear, I wasn’t rude to the guests.” Since his early days, he believes he’s gotten better at the job, “I’m more comfortable and more at home.” And he’s discovered the secret to live interviews: “The best interviews are people who are passionate about what they do. They love talking about what they do and I love hearing about it.” So do we.

Karl Gehrke Join South Dakota’s conversation on Dakota Midday on SDPB Radio, weekdays at Noon (11 MT). And tune in April 13-17 to learn about a special offer for the Dakota Midday Book Club.
