Tom Schaefer
Friends of SDPB hosts a sizzling trio of strings when renowned fiddlers Owen DeJong, Kenny Putnam and Tom Schaefer perform together at Fiddles and Friends at Strawbale Winery near Renner, South Dakota on Saturday, August 22 from 5:30-8:30 pm. Putnam, a member of the Red Willow Band who also played with Roy Clark, prepares us for a fun evening: SDPB: “What’s special about playing with Owen and Tom?” Kenny Putnam: “They are the best players and fellas I’ve
known for 40 years. Owen was an early inspiration of mine back in Vermillion in 1973 and Tom knows more about fiddle playing than I ever will.” SDPB: “What songs and styles can we expect?” KP: “A little swing, country, Irish, Hawaiian and whatever else we decide.” SDPB: “Anything else you’d like us to know?” KP: “The difference between a fiddle and a violin is, a fiddle’s fun to listen to!” Tickets are $25 and include wine and Skipping Stone’s wood-fired pizza. Tickets are available at shop.SDPB.org, Strawbale Winery, or Friends of SDPB in Brookings at (800) 333-0789. Proceeds benefit Friends of SDPB.

Results from a recent landmark National Bureau of Economic Research study on the scholastic merits of Sesame Street (Early Childhood Education by MOOC: Lessons from Sesame Street) are proving what parents, educators, and public media supporters have known since Big Bird first bobbed down the famous avenue in 1969. Not only does Sesame Street promote schoolpreparedness in preschoolers, but according to analysts, kids with access to the show are more likely to advance through school at appropriate gradelevels. Public media’s supporting role in America’s classrooms has a long legacy. In 1950s South Dakota, radio station KUSD broadcast music lessons to rural schoolhouses where instruments and band teachers were scarce. SDPB-TV began in 1951 as KUSD, a closed-circuit broadcast at the University of South Dakota to accommodate a growing student body
enrolled under the GI Bill. Decades later, Sesame Street, Mr. Rogers, and Reading Rainbow premiered to provide children with school readiness skills and opportunities to experience cultures of all kinds on American television. Changes in technology have only increased public media’s opportunities to supplement PreK-12 classrooms. As WordGirl, Cyberchase, and Sesame Street’s Game of Thrones spoof attest, public media is particularly adept at tapping into the contemporary to provide engaging educational programming.

“I always recommend the PBS Kids website to my students as an awesome resource for use in their future classrooms,” says Gera Jacobs, USD professor of Early Childhood and Elementary Education and Past President of the National Association for the Education of Young Children. “It has high quality content that will help children learn as well as be entertained,” says Jacobs. SDPB’s Education and Outreach webpage, SDPB.org/learn, connects teachers and parents to PBS Learning Media and SDPB’s Digital Learning Library. Combined, these digital libraries contain over 100,000 videos, interactives, and lesson plans, hundreds with a South Dakota focus and correlated to South Dakota and Common Core curriculum standards. Searchable by grade level and discipline, the libraries are connected to programs and resources produced by SDPB, PBS, and the Center for Native American Indian Research

is mindful of realities of educators, students, and school facilities. “The rule of thumb is that kids have one minute of attention span for every year of age,” says Rokusek. “It can be challenging for teachers to keep them engaged at all times. We provide a variety of ideas, activities and video clips so teachers can incorporate their curriculum quickly and without trouble.” According to Ryan Zens, director of Fit and Fun, a Rapid Photo: ©USD Archives: USD City pre-school Photo Archive Collection and after-school program, “In teacher trainings, Steve does hands-on stuff we can take back and use right away. His projects use recycled materials, ice, wires, light bulbs - things that we have at our facility that we can definitely do.” And while media-rich content is desirable, Rokusek focuses on accessibility for educators who are end-users of SDPB resources by providing “glitch-free” content. The SDPB.org/learn website provides textonly documents and downloadable videos to ensure materials are compatible with most technology. Rokusek says relationships with educators are still foremost. “I like to keep close connections with teachers either face-to-face at conferences or with our weekly newsletter,” says Rokusek. “Teachers are one of our children’s greatest assets. Throughout the school year teachers are with our children almost every day. At SDPB, we strive to support teachers by providing accessible, age-appropriate resources that are classroom ready.”

and Native Studies (CAIRNS). Lesson plans include everything from crafting a geological flipbook of Badland rock layers to high-quality videos of clam and cow eye dissections – a bonus for districts with budgets too tight for field trips or costly dissection specimens. Additionally, SDPB.org/learn is a resource portal for collaborative projects throughout South Dakota and the nation. For example, students in Jacqueline Myers’s 10th grade speech class in New Underwood filmed themselves reciting Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address to share for SDPB’s Learn the Address project. “My students were so engaged. Seeing their hard work published online for a larger audience was a powerful motivating tool,” says Myers. While teaching handouts and videos proliferate on the Internet, not all receive passing grades from instructors. Myers says she appreciates SDPB’s engaging content as well as the quality control. “That the resources come from SDPB gives me a feeling of security,” says Myers. “I can send my students to these resources without being afraid of them being redirected to any inappropriate material.” At the center of SDPB’s educational and outreach efforts is “Science Steve” Rokusek. Rokusek is popular with kids and area educators alike for his wildly entertaining science demonstrations that use items like a leaf blower and flying toilet paper to teach velocity and air pressure. Rokusek’s lively demonstrations derive from his years teaching science to high schoolers. “I noticed all students do better with a variety of approaches to providing content,” says Rokusek. “Incorporating movement gets kids to focus and can provide better outcomes.” As a developer of educational content for SDPB’s online resources, Rokusek

If you like piña coladas, you may enjoy 60s & 70s Slow Songs (SDPB1 Aug 8 & 16) hosted by Huron native and film/TV actress Cheryl Ladd. The program showcases slow-dancing radio classics like Rupert Holmes’s “Escape,” Robert John’s “Sad Eyes” and Perry Como’s “Where Do I Begin.” SDPB quickens the tempo on Rock, Pop, and Doo Wop (SDPB1 Aug 12 & 15) when Ronnie Spector sings smash Ronettes-era hits like “Be My Baby” and “Baby I Love You.” The show also features electrifying renditions of “Da Doo Ron Ron” and “Then He Kissed Me” from Crystals girl group singer La La Brooks and performances by Jay Black of Jay & the Americans (“Cara Mia”) and Len Barry (“1-2-3”). County music legend Roy Clark hosts Country Pop Legends (SDPB1 Aug 10 & 12) featuring performances from crossover luminaries like Glen Campbell, Crystal Gayle, Tammy Wynette, and the Bellamy Brothers (“Let Your Love Flow”). And celebrate five decades of folk artistry and passionate politics with 50 Years with Peter, Paul, and Mary on SDPB1 Aug 14. Or if you are into yoga, health food, or improving your brain, SDPB

Communist Daughter
Recently, the number of live performances recorded by SDPB has increased significantly. Acts like blues/soul artist Kyshona Armstrong live from Augustana College, indie rockers Communist Daughter at the Black Hills Music Festival, Condor at the 605 Summer Classic, and a bevy of Americana, roots music, and plains folk are broadcast on SDPB’s On Record with Matt Weesner (Saturdays, 9pm/8 MT) and No Cover No Minimum Radio (Saturdays, 11pm/10 MT). Listeners can also stream live acts on-demand by downloading the SDPB App for iOs or Android at SDPB.org/app.

If silence is golden, how rich SDPB Radio audio engineers must be. For the engineers who record live music acts on-site, coughs, feedback, and uncooperative acoustics are routine hazards of a job in which the goal is to capture a clean recording while preserving the energy and spontaneity of a live performance. SDPB Radio records and produces hundreds of hours of local, regional, and national music acts, including high school All-State Chorus and Orchestra concerts. Our sound engineers, including contract engineers based in Sioux Falls and Rapid City, work hard to record the South Dakota and Black Hills symphony orchestras, JazzFest, and Sioux Falls Jazz and Blues Society to provide the live music SDPB Radio listeners have come to expect and enjoy on South Dakota Season Ticket (Wednesdays, 10am/11MT, during Morning Classics) and Jazz Nightly (Weeknights, 8 pm/7 MT.) Copies of live concerts, refined in-studio with post-production by SDPB engineers, are often made available to the public as well as the artists.

Neutrino Day Hundreds participated in science experiments, games, and discussions during the Sanford Underground Research Facility’s Neutrino Day activities held July 10 and 11 in Lead. The two-day science extravaganza commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Solar Neutrino Experiment at Homestake Mine – the first to successfully detect and count the solar neutrinos that help us understand how stars produce energy. SDPB Radio’s Dakota Midday Innovation broadcast live from the underground lab and featured Rapid City native Emily Graslie, 26, who is Chief Curiosity Correspondent for the Chicago Field Museum. Graslie also discussed the role of science and art with SDPB Radio News Director Cara Hetland at the Homestake Opera House. 18
