Science Steve Let’s just say he’s not hard to spot in a crowd. At 6 feet, 8 inches, clad in a protracted white lab coat and terry cloth headband, SDPB’s “Science Steve” Rokusek is the tireless guy velocitizing toilet paper with a leaf blower or theatrically ripping a tablecloth out from a tower of perilously stacked dinnerware. His bubbling cauldrons of dry ice, unpoppable balloons and hair-raising static enthrall crowds from the Outdoor Campus in Sioux Falls to the Lakota Nations Invitational in Rapid City. “Whattya’ll think? One more?” Rokusek pretends to ask rabbles of open-mouthed kids swarming his knees — knowing the kiddos will only roar for more: more perilous plates, more toilet paper, more science. As SDPB’s Education Specialist, Rokusek attends dozens of family events and educational conferences throughout South Dakota, animating scientific laws in ways that make them a little more lawless and that much more appealing. “Science Steve captivates not only the attention of my preschoolers, but also mine,” says Teri Schneider, a teacher at Vermillion’s Center for Children and Families. “He relates to the kids Learn. Dream. Grow.

so well and shows us teachers that science doesn’t have to be expensive to explore and it’s fairly easy to explore in the classroom with just a few household items. We’re so blessed to have him as a demonstrator of both science and fun.” Although he’s in demand at libraries and teaching demos allyear round, Rokusek’s repertoire extends far beyond his stints as his scientific alter ego. Like most educators, Rokusek spends more hours developing curriculum than teaching it. While his signature headband ends up sweatsoaked after each high-energy science demo, Rokusek works even more diligently behind the scenes, partnering with area educators to craft curriculum tailored to South Dakota’s standards and culture. The Need in South Dakota According to South Dakota Kids Count, a yearly data count on child well-being, approximately 17%, or roughly 35,000, of all South Dakota’s children live in poverty. Of those, 54% are American Indian children, which is about eight times higher than white children

in South Dakota. About 61%, or 15,000, of children ages 3-4 in South Dakota are not in school, including 66% of white kids and 50% of Native kids. Of South Dakota’s 4th graders, 64% are not proficient readers. According to Susan Cochran, Kids Count program director, reading readiness is a vital indicator of future success. “Prior, to 4th grade, kids are learning to read. After 4th grade, kids should be reading to learn.” “It’s paramount to SDPB’s mission to provide educational programming and services that help caregivers and educators reinforce an ecosystem of learning for South Dakota’s kids,” says Rokusek. “Public broadcasting is one of the most trusted sources of free school-readiness skills for our youngest and most vulnerable children.” Rokusek stresses the importance of partnerships. “We had the amazing opportunity to partner with WoLakota at TIE, Dakota State University, and the University of South Dakota to produce new content,” says Rokusek. “We’re also very fortunate to have a talented intern, Josh Haiar, this summer who’s interested in producing short animated education videos, which enables us to produce videos specifically designed for our PreK-4th grade students in South Dakota.” Coming to SDPB & PBS in September This fall, with support from the WoLakota Project and the Archeology Department at the University of South Dakota, SDPB will premiere newly developed educational content for our state’s educators for the 2018-2019 school year. Here’s a preview of resources coming soon to SDPB.org/Learn and PBS LearningMedia. Native American Studies Videos What are the realities between South Dakota’s Lakota, Dakota and Nakota people and boarding schools, reservations, and land stewardship? What are Winter Counts and how are they crucial to understanding Great Plains history? For PreK-4th grade students, Rokusek has assisted in the development of a Native American Studies video series in close partnership with Technology & Innovation in Education (TIE) and the WoLakota Project in Rapid City, a program supporting students in rural, high-need schools and incorporating Oceti Sakowin Essential Understandings, a curriculum and coursework in South Dakota American Indian history and culture. These videos jumpstart cultural learning activities in the classroom and at home.

A Push in the Right Direction Even in the era of GPS, knowing West from East develops spatial reasoning and confidence in kids. New this year to SDPB.org/Learn is an engaging animated video series for PreK-4th grades on cardinal directions and map-reading, including language practice with past, present, and future verb tenses. Dissection 101 SDPB adds to its well-received Dissection 101 series this school year with more videos, lesson plans and quizzes on dissections of crayfish, clams, earthworms and more. The video series provides an alternative teaching tool for classrooms with limited resources or the faint of heart.

In September a new video series on Native American studies for PreK-4th grade students will be available at SDPB.org/Learn.

A new SDPB online video series teaches kids about past, present and future verb tenses and cardinal directions. Coming in September to SDPB.org/Learn.

Art & Culture Afield Peru’s Chavín de Huantar archaeology site contains vivid artifacts of a vital pre-Inca culture 160 miles north of Lima. Faculty and students at USD’s Department of Anthropology & Sociology have visited and studied the site extensively, even producing a documentary about their research. Now, thanks to lessons plans developed with SDPB, students throughout South Dakota can design, draw, and produce three-dimensional sculptural art using Chavín style. Another lesson taps into art and the senses, examining how Chavín temple artworks reinforced hierarchical social structures. Thousands of standardized lesson plans and activities can be accessed at SDPB’s SDPB.org/Learn and PBSLearningMedia.org. August 2018

NHK Newsline NHK Newsline delivers the latest from Japan, Asia, and the rest of the world. The wide network of correspondents covers breaking news and developing stories, offering a perspective from this corner of the globe. This team of trusted anchors ties it all together to give you a picture of what’s happening now, and what’s ahead. SDPB2: Weekdays, 4pm (3 MT)

America ReFramed: Children of the Arctic For teenagers Samuel, Josiah, Flora, Ace and Maaya, growing up is more complicated than it was for their ancestors on the isolated tundra of Barrow, Alaska (originally named “Ukpiagvik” or “where we hunt snowy owls”). As descendants of Alaska’s Native people, they are inheritors of a centuries-old way of life that emphasizes traditional ways about community, the role of elders and the relationship to nature. Proud of their Native heritage, the teens are also modern Americans facing stark realities: a fastchanging culture and climate, modern consumer economies and the impact of oil-drilling.

Stories from the Stage: In the Dog House Paying tribute to our canine companions and their culinary namesakes, Robin Gelfenbien puts it all on the line for her dream job: a gig on the Oscar Mayer Weinermobile. The love of dogs enriches Lina Coral’s life after a congenital eye condition leaves her blind. Ron Goldman (pictured) comes to understand the depth of a family tragedy through the loss of his dog Honey. Three storytellers, three interpretations. SDPB2: Monday, August 13, 8:30pm (7:30 MT)

At least once a week, Myron Pourier (Oglala Lakota) hikes the 7,242 foot-high granite mountain that, since August 2016, has born his great-great grandfather’s name – Black Elk Peak or Heȟáka Sápa. “I go up there and I pray, usually with my son or by myself,” says Pourier from his home in Porcupine. “Or maybe with a group of Jesuits or from the Neihardt Foundation, or just a group I meet up there and we start walking up together, people I’ve never met before.” Does Pourier ever mention to strange trail trekkers he’s a direct descendant of Black Elk, the holy man whose vision makes up the canonical Black Elk Speaks? “You know, normally I never do,” says Pourier. “Only at the point when they start talking, ‘This was called Harney Peak, and it was changed to Black Elk Peak.’ And I listen to the conversation and then I introduce myself. And they’re like, ‘Oh. Wow.’” Pourier was central to the historic name change. “It signified for me what my grandmother, Olivia, believed in and what Black Elks Speaks is about. It signifies cultural diversity and understanding for all walks of life. The book is a big part of the name change. It got off-course into what Harney did, his massacres, during the process of what I and my family were doing it for. My message was to unite everyone through his vision. It was a victory for

Native people, but I would say it’s a victory for all walks of life.” A military veteran with PTSD, Pourier uses his grandfather’s text in his work as a volunteer addiction counselor with inmates. “I believe in giving a hand up, helping people realize who they are in their spirits.” The cachet associated with his lineage could present both privilege and pressure, but Pourier says he can’t be selfish of something so sacred. “To be a part of my grandmother’s life and my grandfather’s legacy that was distilled into her is an honor. It’s too holy to be possessive. That would go against everything that I was raised with.” Pourier says Nicholas Black Elk’s induction into the 2018 South Dakota Hall of Fame is also an honor. He credits the nomination to the writer Charles Trimble, a close family friend. Meanwhile, another nomination

pends as the family waits to hear if Black Elk, a catechist, will join Saint Kateri Tekakwitha as an indigenous saint in the Catholic Church. Friends and family have petitioned the Rapid City diocese for canonization. “Grandfather’s in the second stage of beatification through canonization, and the stage is very humbling. Most don’t even really get to the second stage,” says Pourier. According to Pourier, these are small acts of divine intervention leading to true unity between all people. “Things are progressing in a good way, a humble way. Everything takes time, but we’re moving toward it. There’s a bigger picture. I don’t know what it is, but I’m very hopeful and proud to be a part of that bigger picture.” A full version of this interview can be found at SDPB.org/Living.

resources for rural schools – things like resources for blind and deaf students, counseling resources to help with behavioral issues, and the general mental health issues we’re seeing in young people in our state.” Hendry shares what she enjoys most about her work with SDPB: “I love getting to travel around the state, and I love crafting a story or having conversations on air with Lori [Walsh] about what’s happening in my beat,” says Hendry. “But the best part is getting to talk with people who are so passionate about what they do. From teachers to librarians to students—I get excited about things that I’d never even heard of before just from talking to people about what they’re working on, and it’s all happening right here in South Dakota. It’s a really fun and fulfilling way to make a living, and I feel really fortunate that this is what I get to do.” Find Jackie Hendry’s education coverage on SDPB Radio and SDPB.org.

In the year she’s been covering education stories for SDPB, reporter Jackie Hendry has quickly learned how education issues permeate other topics. “I’ve discovered the line between education stories and workforce development stories is very thin,” says Hendry. “For instance, the piece I did for South Dakota: The Next Generation focused a lot on the growing tendency and need for schools and industry to work together to provide internship opportunities that lead to job opportunities that encourage young people in South Dakota to stick around.” Hendry knows of what she reports. While finishing her graduate degree in communication from USD, Hendry came to SDPB Radio as an intern, opening the door to her current position as SDPB’s Education Beat Reporter. Originally from Illinois, Hendry recently relocated to Sioux Falls to work from SDPB’s Sioux

Falls Studios near Falls Park. Hendry’s education stories have her traveling throughout the state to showcase South Dakota’s students: to Rosebud to cover young people growing a community garden and rehabbing the Rosebud Powwow Grounds, to Vermillion to interview the national award-winning robotics team, and to Sioux Falls for the Lakota Language Weekend. Central to Hendry’s beat is delivering updates on policy and funding. In addition to following potential new high school graduation requirements for South Dakota students and recommendations special education funding, she’s on covering the trials on Mid-Central Education Cooperative. “There’s a lot to talk about there, but most relevant to my beat is looking at achievement gaps and how we can address them as a state,” says Hendry. “I’m also looking into stories about specialized This summer, SDPB brings highlights from the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra’s 2017-2018 Season. 20 Years of Wait Wait Tune in to SDPB Radio as we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the beloved weekly hour-long quiz program Wait Wait... Don’t Tell Me! with a series of major live shows in 2018. “When the show began, we all assumed we’d be canceled any minute and decided to just make ourselves laugh by saying what we really thought about the news until someone stopped us,” said host Peter Sagal. “Twenty years later, we’re still waiting. I don’t know what’s keeping them, frankly. I mean, have you actually listened to us?” “When we started the show in

1998, we worried about whether there would be enough public idiocy to fill up the show every week,” said Doug Berman, the show’s creator. “In retrospect, that was a completely unwarranted concern. And, sadly, I think the future is even brighter for our show.” Special broadcasts include live from Millennium Park in Chicago, IL, on August 9, and Riverside Theatre in Milwaukee, WI, on August 30. Listen to SDPB this fall for your chance to attend a Wait, Wait live anniversary show in Chicago, Oct. 25. Includes hotel and airfare, courtesy of Wait, Wait.

Thank You, Michele Slott Michele Slott, SDPB’s West River Director of Corporate Development, leaves SDPB to become the Associate Pastor at First United Methodist Church in Rapid City, the church she’s attended for 20 years. Michele has been attending seminary through Sioux Falls Seminary, through the Kairos Project, a flexible learning platform for earning a Masters of Divinity degree. Michele shares her favorite moments at SDPB: “Listening to NPR’s Ari Shapiro speak at a public broadcasting conference in Boston and hearing his passion for his work. It was two months after NPR journalist, David Gilkey, and his Afghan translator, Zabihullah Tamanna, were killed by a Taliban ambush in southern Afghanistan. Shapiro’s desire, and that of NPR, to make sure that important stories of suffering are told to the world, no matter how remote of a location they come from. To me, they are using their skills and roles as journalists to fuel a mission 20

of social justice, to make sure that the rest of us know what is going on and hopefully be empowered to do something to help.” “Meeting amazing musicians from South Dakota and from all over the world, and witnessing important conversations taking place at the SDPB Studio as part of the live online broadcast of “Where Do We Go from Here?” The caliber of guests at the new studio has made my time here truly amazing!” “My first in-person meeting with anyone who is a voice on SDPB was memorable. It’s a weird cross of being star-struck and meeting a longlost relative for the first time. My palms got sweaty!” SDPB is thankful to Michele for underwriting partnerships she’s built and gives our best wishes to her, husband Rodger and sons Cayden and Dylan.

SDPB’s Black Hills Studio was one of three winners of the 2018 Norm E. Nelson Preservation Achievement Awards highlighting redevelopment projects that successfully balance preservation with progress. The Rapid City Historic Preservation Commission recognized JLG Architects and SDPB’s Black Hills Studio for demonstrating excellence in the redevelopment of historic property for the rehabilitation of 415 Main Street. Originally built in 1946 as the Casper Supply Company, and later known as the Parts Central Building, the building is a prime example of the Western Art Deco Movement. In re-imagining the space as studios for SDPB, JLG worked to retain key Art Deco historical elements of the building while creating flexibility and incorporating more natural light into the space. The Black Hills Studio is a recent addition to 41 different stops on an historic architecture walking tour in downtown Rapid City, commissioned by the Rapid City Historic Preservation Commission. The tours are organized into five different loops: downtown core, north, south, east and west. Included are classics like the Hotel Alex Johnson and South Dakota Stockgrowers Association building. Maps of the self-guided tour are at PictureRCPast.com, the Rapid City Hall, the Main Street Square/Visit Rapid City offices, the Interstate 90 Visitor Information Center, and at SDPB’s Black Hills Studio.
