“Simplicity is the final achievement. After one has played a vast quantity of notes and more notes, it is simplicity that emerges as the crowning reward of art.” ~ Frederic Chopin As he sits partially hidden by his desktop monitor, Owen DeJong’s distinctively gentle voice flows between the small towers of classical CDs that form a miniature skyline atop his small desk. Pianist Alexander Beridze’s selections of Beethoven, Brahms and Schumann roof one tower. Itzhak Perlman’s tribute album to Jascha Heifetz tops another. On it, the photo of Perlman and his violin are blurry, the plastic cover clouded from countless re-shelvings into SDPB’s music library. It is Monday afternoon. DeJong, host of Morning Classics on SDPB Radio, is prepping Tuesday’s program in much the same manner he has for the last two decades, cohering personal observations with liner notes and morsels sourced from the Grove’s Dictionary of Music and Musicians and Grout’s History of Western Music. “I’m writing up my featured work of the day and different events I want to draw listeners’ attention to,” says DeJong. For DeJong, it is another day in the last 20 years of days broadcasting concertos, fugues, requiems, and choral works to lovers of classical music throughout South Dakota and even trans-Atlantic 4

listeners online. Featured works are inspired by composer’s birthdays, national holidays, seasons, or whim. DeJong deepened the listening experience with context: a piece’s impetus or public reception in Salzburg, a noteworthy oboe solo. To fill 15 hours with classical music each week, bolstered by Friday listener requests, has been a multi-suite waltz of research, writing, musical expertise and radio jockery whose intricacies are concealed by DeJong’s comforting, conversational on-air tone. He is characteristically self-effacing. “This job has been easy and every day has been an education,” he says. Pleasure and purported ease notwithstanding, DeJong has decided, at the age of 65, to move away from the microphone. He plans to sign off SDPB Radio permanently December 30. “It’s time,” says DeJong. “Time for me to back on out of here.” He cites the existential math. “If I live as long as my dad did, that gives me 13 more years. I don’t want to sound like I’m ungrateful for what I have here, because I’m not. And it’s not been a burden in any way at all, because I could have quit if I felt that way. But I haven’t had a lot of free time and my

personal life has not been existent at all much beyond working here.” When DeJong first signed on to SDPB in 1997, half of the music he played was on vinyl. Key recordings in the classical canon had yet to migrate to compact disc. He views technological changes in broadcast media as an added cue for a curtain call. “I don’t Tweet and I don’t do Facebook. Now even CDs are becoming a thing of the past,” he says. It’s evident from the silent quotation marks connoted by a slightly glib articulation of “Tweet” that social media affords DeJong little allure. DeJong’s biography runs decidedly toward arts and letters. The oldest son of a history professor and homemaker, DeJong settled in Vermillion, SD after a Midwestern childhood and a turn in Utrecht in the Netherlands via his father’s Fulbright scholarship. A classically trained violinist and selftaught fiddler, DeJong was four the first time he held a violin. “I started scraping around,” says DeJong. “I wanted to take lessons until I actually started taking them at about nineyears-old. My mom and dad kept me at it after the reality set in that it wasn’t going to be easy.” He endured,

eventually playing with the Sioux City Youth Orchestra. After high school, DeJong enrolled in art and music classes at the University of South Dakota but graduated with an English degree and a country-western band, for which he played guitar and fiddle. Next came a Master’s in English, a teaching certificate, and a job at Wakonda High School, north of Vermillion. DeJong continued to moonlight with his music, fiddling with notable South Dakota groups like The Totally Amazing Bitsko Band and Dry Mustard as well as the Public Domain Tune Band and Poker Alice, beloved ensembles with whom he continues to play, with guitarist Nick Schwebach, today. He also regularly performs country tributes at Gayville Hall and dons his tuxedo as a viola player with the USD Symphony Orchestra. Prior to broadcasting classical on SDPB, DeJong spun classic rock for a late night show on KVRA/KVRF-FM in Vermillion. “Foreigner, Meatloaf – the really old stuff,” he jokes. When he began hosting Morning Classics, he says not all the show’s fans were thrilled. “Anytime you change a host of a program, someone’s going to wish the old host was still there.” But he’s grateful to his loyal followers. “The Morning Classics audience has been a great audience. They helped me learn some things I wasn’t aware of – backannouncing, the pronunciation of some of the Italian names.” Soon after taking the helm, DeJong added a Master’s in Violin Performance from USD to his credentials and listeners reaped the rewards of a classical music host with graduate degrees in music and English. DeJong’s demure self-revelations are disrupted by a knock at his office door. Megan Rosendahl, a former SDPB Radio intern who is now a Digital Content Coordinator for Aberdeen American News, stops by from a job recruitment fair to greet her former mentor. DeJong’s face brightens as he pauses the interview to greet her warmly and by name. DeJong’s life has been characterized, on and off both the air and stage, by exchanges of art and knowledge between listeners and a man who is unswervingly resistant to self-congratulating. As with most

generous personalities, it’s difficult to discern whether giver or receiver gains more from the transactions. Mike Flaherty, an English and music student of DeJong’s in 1980s Wakonda, recalls DeJong’s unassuming largesse. “He was gentle and encouraging,” says Flaherty. “I got to see his love of music when he was our substitute band teacher. He wouldn’t get upset when we performed poorly. He worked with us patiently, and he would laugh with enjoyment when we finally got it right.” For Flaherty, DeJong’s lessons in resolve stuck. “He had me do a term paper over because it was frankly awful and he didn’t want to fail me. I pulled an all-nighter to get it done. I probably wouldn’t have done that for another teacher. I had clear memories of that experience while working on my dissertation years later.” Laurie Brown, a singer/musician and longtime friend, says DeJong’s dedication to playing and making music in South Dakota has impacted people throughout the Midwest. “Owen has made classical music accessible to many of us who might not have had an appreciation without him,” says Brown. “Each composer, each piece has a history and it’s important to Owen that he shares that with us, together with the music itself.” Brown says DeJong’s presence in multiple South Dakota music scenes has lastingly connected fellow musicians and fans. “Owen is an important part of the history of so many people,” says Brown. “There’s an ongoing, uninterrupted memory thing happening, and it’s tied in with music and breathing and living.” For DeJong, the time to breathe and live with more moments for himself has, according to him, unquestionably arrived. Returning to the interview, he says he’s most looking forward to having more time to tend his home and acreage northwest of Vermillion and to visit his 90-year-old mother in Iowa, who, as “Ma Toots,” will no longer have to call in to the station to request her favorite on Fridays. Spurred by DeJong’s retirement, SDPB Radio’s daytime schedule will undergo noticeable changes. On Point will join the morning schedule, and Dakota Midday will extend to two hours as In the Moment with

Lori Walsh to include more arts and culture coverage and live music performance, along with expanded South Dakota news coverage by a team of beat reporters. SDPB will continue to offer classical music on SDPB Classical. (See p. 21.) Will DeJong be listening? “I’ll tune in,” says DeJong. “Why wouldn’t I? The programming is the best thing on the air. And I think Lori’s work is really impressive. I’ve seen the show come a really long way. Lori had to step up and fill some big shoes after Karl Gehrke, but she, Steve Zwemke, and Chris Laughery are doing a great job producing it. It’s a tough job prepping for a live daily show – researching, interviewing, tracking people down and then going on the air every day. I wouldn’t want to do it!” DeJong laughs then strikes a serious tone. “But Lori’s doing an excellent job and it’s good to hear a female voice on the air on a regular basis.” DeJong glances at the clock. It is well past lunchtime and he still has tomorrow’s program to prepare. Then there is the trek home to his acreage, with a large house to clean, cats to feed, a country meadow to mow, a viola to practice, and a mother to call. DeJong is anxious to fit it all in before morning.

Winter of Discontent? Warm Thyself with Star-studded Shakespeare The internationally lauded The Hollow Crown mini-series continues its epic saga with three more lavish film adaptations on Great Performances: Parts I and II of Henry VI and Richard III. Together, they tell the story of The Wars of the Roses, a medieval spectacle spanning rebellion in France, the rise and fall of Joan of Arc, the terror of England’s Civil War, and the deceitful dynastic murders culminating in the infamous reign of Richard III. The series features today’s leading actors in a bravura collection of Shakespearean roles, including Judi Dench as Cecily, Duchess of York, alongside Benedict Cumberbatch’s (Sherlock) Richard III. Sophie Okonedo (Hotel Rwanda) portrays Queen Margaret. Hugh Bonneville (Downton Abbey) plays Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester, and Sally Hawkins is his wife Eleanor, Duchess of Gloucester in Henry VI, Part I. Keeley Hawes (The Durrells in Corfu) plays Queen Elizabeth in Henry VI, Part II and Richard III, and Tom Sturridge (On the Road, Being Julia) portrays Henry VI.

Benedict Cumberbatch plays King Richard III in The Hollow Crown.

The Hollow Crown: Richard III

The Hollow Crown: Henry VI, Part I

Richard, the most notorious of Shakespeare’s kings, manipulates and betrays his way through the court on a bloodthirsty and ruthless path to the throne. But after Richard’s defeat at the battle of Bosworth Field, the Houses of Lancaster and York—the red rose and the white—are united, bringing to an end the Wars of the Roses and long tumultuous period of civil strife.

The King is dead and England is in crisis. War rages with the French and divisions within the English court threaten the crown. Young Henry VI causes outrage by marrying Margaret of Anjou, forcing an unwanted truce; the scene is set for Civil War. SDPB1: Sunday, Dec. 11, 8pm (7 MT)

Bitter rivalries erupt into the Wars of the Roses. The feeble King Henry is overshadowed by Queen Margaret and her faction of Lancastrian Lords, his reign further undermined by disaffected nobles supporting the House of York. Battle and bloodshed ensue and the Yorkists triumph. Edward IV takes the throne, but his youngest brother Richard has his eyes firmly on the crown.

Actors assemble on stage with Prince Charles for Shakespeare Live! From the RSC.

For thousands of years, wolves hunted buffalo across the vast North American plains, until the westward settlement of the continent saw the virtual extinction of these vast herds and their eternal predators. However, this ancient relationship was not lost altogether and continues uninterrupted in only one location — the northern edge of Canada’s central plains in a place named Wood Buffalo National Park. Today, the descendants of those ancient buffalo and wolves still engage in the epic life-and-death dramas across this northern land. Nature Cold Warriors—Wolves & Buffalo captures their story in thrilling cinematic glory by a lone filmmaker who has followed them for more than 20 years. SDPB1: Wednesday, Dec. 28, 7pm (6 MT)

New Year, New Programs on SDPB Radio A new year brings exciting new programming on SDPB Radio. SDPB Radio’s daytime schedule will undergo noticeable changes at the start of 2017.

In the Moment with Lori Walsh

Spurred by the retirement of Morning Classics host Owen DeJong, Dakota Midday will undergo a time change as well as a name change. The show will broaden to become a two-hour news and culture magazine program titled In the Moment with Lori Walsh. In the Moment will include more arts and culture coverage and live music performance, along with expanded news coverage by a team of beat reporters from throughout South Dakota. Like Dakota Midday, the program’s focus will continue to include authentic conversations with newsmakers, scholars, artists and everyday South Dakotans, but will extend to accommodate more stories and in-depth reports. “In the Moment will tell the story of what it means to live in South Dakota,” says host Walsh. “We are here to connect with our listeners – on air, online, and in-person.” In the Moment will be produced by SDPB’s Steve Zwemke and Chris Laughery. In the Moment will air 11am-1pm (10am-Noon MT) Monday through Friday beginning Monday, January 2, 2017.

On Point with Tom Ashbrook

Also beginning Monday, January 2, SDPB Radio will join almost 300 NPR stations across the country to air On Point with Tom Ashbrook. On Point is a nationally-syndicated two-hour call-in program that addresses news issues, as well as arts, culture, technology, health, and business topics. Produced by WBUR in Boston, On Point was created in the immediate aftermath of the attacks of 9/11 to help provide a forum for multiple voices and viewpoints. Host Ashbrook has said, “We still carry that urgency today: to test, challenge and probe. And while we do it, to celebrate the people, arts and ideas that make life a joy.” On Point will air 9am-11am (8am-10am MT) Monday through Friday beginning Monday, January 2 on SDPB Radio.

SDPB to Launch Multiplatform, 24/7 SDPB Kids Service SDPB is pleased to announce the launch of SDPB Kids, the free, 24-hour multi-platform service for children. The SDPB Kids service will be available January 17, 2017. SDPB Kids will include a new TV channel and live stream on digital platforms, broadcasting PBS KIDS shows 24-hours a day, making it easy for children to watch their favorite PBS series during primetime and other after-school hours when viewing among families is high. Viewers can also watch through PBSKIDS.org and on the PBS KIDS Video App, which is available on a variety of mobile devices, tablets and over-the-top platforms such as Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, Xbox One and Chromecast. Following its initial launch, the live stream experience will expand to offer an integrated games feature, enabling children to toggle between a PBS KIDS show and an activity that extends learning – all in one seamless digital experience. The live stream and games feature is grounded in research demonstrating that measurable gains in learning

In the coming year, PBS and SDPB will roll out a variety of additional initiatives designed to meet the needs of today’s children, including new STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) content, digital innovations and customizable tools for parents and caregivers. SDPB will have more information about SDPD Kids availability and programming in early January, 2017. Meanwhile, SDPB’s new Saturday morning line-up debuts this month. SDPB Television

SDPB Television experienced several major achievements this year: with your support, we surpassed our goals for each of the on-air pledge drives and we produced a record number of local production hours by broadcasting over 950 hours of local programming. We continued to showcase people, places, and public affairs from throughout South Dakota with our Emmy-nominated newsmagazine Dakota Life and live, interactive public affairs program SD Focus. We also launched the popular local foods program Savor Dakota – a 4-part seasonally oriented series showcasing locally sourced ingredients. Recognizing the broadening landscape of broadcast media, this year SDPB-TV developed a “digital first” strategy for local productions to increase the reach and impact South Dakota stories have around the nation and world. Supported by SDPB’s Engineering Department, SDPB-TV successfully upgraded to a High Definition Mobile Production Unit, enabling high-quality broadcasts of South Dakota High School Activities Association competitions like football championships and All-State Chorus and Orchestra, as well as legislative coverage from the State Capitol. 22

SDPB Radio

As always, SDPB Radio staffers worked round-the-clock to deliver quality news, public affairs and arts programming on-air and online. The quality was evident, as SDPB Radio swept the regional Edward R. Murrow Awards – garnering seven awards, including coverage by Gary Ellenbolt and Kealy Bultena of the Harrisburg school shooting, Victoria Wicks’ continuing coverage of the Keystone XL Pipeline in South Dakota, and for overall excellence. Cara Hetland was named Director of Radio, long-time reporter Charles Michael Ray became News Director, and we welcomed new journalists Lori Walsh as host of Dakota Midday and government and public policy reporter Lee Strubinger. SDPB Radio aired and recorded hundreds of hours of local music, including Sioux Falls JazzFest, and the South Dakota and Black Hills symphonies. Like their colleagues in TV, SDPB Radio worked throughout the year to develop digital strategies to ensure more South Dakotans are receiving the quality news and arts coverage SDPB Radio provides.

SDPB Engineering

It’s all too easy to take for granted the infrastructure that makes public media possible. This year, SDPB’s Engineering Department successfully completed major projects that help guarantee delivery of SDPB programs and services to all communities in South Dakota. SDPB engineers replaced aging, inefficient FM transmitters at KUSD-Beresford and KQSD-Lowry and installed new HD radio-encoding equipment at KYSD-Spearfish to improve HD reception to neighbors in the Spearfish broadcast area. SDPB engineers also worked diligently to install audio-casting equipment at the State Capitol building in Pierre for SD.Net, which provides open access to government and other state activities. SDPB engineers were integral to outfitting SDPB’s new Mobile Production Unit – helping to assure equipment runs optimally at venues across South Dakota.

SDPB Digital & Education

SDPB Digital worked throughout the year to continue to provide the seamless service of highdemand online public media that keeps South Dakotans apprised of state legislative issues, public affairs, and state high school activities, including development of the SD.Net portal for open government meetings to service South Dakota’s boards and commissions, the Legislative Research Council, the Public Utilities Commission, and the Unified Judicial System. SDPB upgraded the online SDPB Community Calendar to improve the reach and delivery of thousands of events throughout the state. SDPB also planned and initiated a new digital and social media delivery plan for South Dakota High School Activities Association events. SDPB Digital and Education department coordinated its third, widely popular Picture South Dakota Photo Contest, for which hundreds of photographers statewide proudly participated by sharing favorite iconic places and people in South Dakota. “Science Steve” Rokusek stimulated STEM education in hundreds of students and teachers across the state with his engaging science demonstrations, including programs at schools, libraries, teacher conferences, Sanford Lab’s Neutrino Day, the It’s All About Science Festival, and the Lakota Nations Education Conference. SDPB continued its online archival project Images of the Past – a deep, distinctive collection of historic South Dakota stories and images digitized and made available to the general public for the purposes of educational films and other historical media. 23 December2016 2016 23 December

SDPB in the Community

Throughout 2016, SDPB greatly expanded the reach of our social media channels, connecting SDPB’s stories and services with more people in South Dakota and the world. SDPB was present at events attended by 67,853 individuals from South Dakota kids and families, including the South Dakota Festival of Books, the South Dakota Peach Festival, the Youth & Family Services Kids Fair, Storybook Land’s Festival, Sanford Lab’s Neutrino Day, and Outdoor Universities in Rapid City, Pierre, and Sioux Falls. We broadcast and webcast stories unique to South Dakota, including the Daschle Dialogues, Statehouse, and comprehensive coverage of legislative meetings and proceedings from the capitol in Pierre.

Friends of SDPB

We are pleased to report that Friends met the financial need goal for the network. The support of members like you made it possible for Friends to provide SDPB with more dollars than we had in any other year! Friends also ended the year with gains in the overall number of members, demonstrating that more viewers and listeners recognized what longtime Friends supporters have long known – that member support is critical to sustaining SDPB’s inimitable programs and services. This was a big boost for Friends, and we accomplished this even with seven fewer on-air fundraising days on television. Your support put the Mobile Production Unit on the road and enables SDPB to connect more audience members to the legislative session in Pierre, high school activities across the state, and brings you more live and recorded events. After the retirement of Terrie Koehne and the departure of Ned Gavlick from our underwriting team, we welcomed Michele Slott (West River) and Liz Larkin (East River). Even with the transition and positions being vacant, Friends very nearly hit the yearly financial goal for underwriting – demonstrating the high regard and assurance South Dakota businesses have for SPDB, even during times of change. Friends also had a successful events year, hosting 11 tea-parties for Downton Abbey fans throughout South Dakota. By popular demand, we also brought back the Three Fiddlers – and added a West River concert, featuring beloved musicians Owen DeJong, Kenny Putman, and Tom Schaefer. 24 24
