This month, Dakota Life showcases just a taste of the art blossoming out of southeast South Dakota. Connected by the southern-most leg of I-29 and boundless creativity, artists in Sioux Falls and Vermillion are demonstrating canvases are to be found not just in bronze and brick, but in coffee cups and community.

Near the banks of the Vermillion and Missouri rivers, Vermillion’s quaint, vibrant downtown bespeaks a community blessed by the creative milieu of a university town. Home to a sculpture walk and prodigious murals by artists Dick Termes and Rick Johns, two new public paintings have recently emerged on the walls of the Coyote Twin Theater. Eúŋkičhetupi, meaning “Come Back to Life” in Lakota, was born of community meetings held by lead artists Reyna Hernandez, Inkpa Mani, and Liz Skye and assisted by Jenae Porter and University of South Dakota professor Amber Hansen. The issues and ideas that emerged in public conversations inspired lead artists to incorporate images and themes that address identity, motherhood, landscape, and water,
among others. A tribute to women worldwide, the striking work tells the Sioux creation story while also addressing the contemporary tensions of living in modern and traditional culture. April Matson, who is Lakota and Alaska Native, and her two young daughters participated in the design and painting process. “The colors that we’re painting are very Indigenous colors,” says Matson. “The brown skin… it’s really overwhelming and emotional and beautiful.” Work for the second part of the mural, titled Wanáhca, (Lakota: “flower that blooms”) intensifies this spring. See the mural and meet the artistic crew who stewarded the project, sometimes painting in 100+ degree heat, to bring the vision to life.
Art in the lobbies of buildings is not uncommon. Artists actively making art in the lobbies of buildings is less so. But sculptor Darwin Wolf likes to be mobile. One place he set up shop is the lobby of the Sioux Falls VA Medical Center to create a sizeable monument to the first female fighter pilots. “He’s located right outside our primary care waiting area,” says Erin Bultje, SFVAHCS Public Affairs Officer. “And so for the veterans to sit in the waiting area and have him to watch has been a really calming effect, is what some veterans have said. You know, they’re here for treatment and it can be a scary process. So for them to watch something and take their mind off of what could be happening, it’s been really nice for them.” Working amidst the bustle of the VA, Wolf receives all kinds of input from the veterans. “The feedback here has been really, really good,” says Wolf. “Both on the critical side and the appreciation side. People who have really enjoyed it tell me their stories over and over again because
I’m kind of telling them a story here. I’ve had three different pilots come and tell me, ‘Oh, my gosh that’s spot on.’ Or, ‘try this differently, that’s a bit off.’ They’ve been really helpful in helping me compose this and get everything really right and that’s what I want. So, their critique has been fantastic.”
As one might expect, latte art contests, where the coffee is the canvas, are stimulating events. Baristas arrive to their coffeehouse coliseums armed with select weapons of the trade: favored stainless steel frothing pitchers and well-honed foaming techniques. SDPB captures the high spirits of camaraderie and competition at the Latte Art Throwdown, hosted at The Bean coffeehouse in Vermillion, where champion coffee artists and rising stars work deftly to turn espresso foam floating on the tops of coffee drinks into delicate but drinkable (continued on p. 25)

Nash Hutmacher
The Polar Bear Becomes a Cornhusker by Katy Beem
Blonde and burly at 6-foot-5 and 305 pounds, Chamberlain High School senior Nash Hutmacher has made a name for himself and then some. Dubbed “The Polar Bear” by wrestling parents as a sizeable freshman grappler, Hutmacher has embraced the term of endearment, hashtagging #ThePolarBear on his social media pages, including Tweets that officially announced he’s signed to play defensive tackle with the University of Nebraska this fall. In the meantime, Hutmacher will finish out an impressive high school career wrestling for the Chamberlain Cubs. The Polar Bear hasn’t lost a match since eighth grade and has won four state heavyweight championships. This year he goes for his fifth individual state wrestling title. The son of powerlifter Joe Hutmacher, Nash first hit the mat as a first grader. “I love competition, that’s kind of what drives me, honestly,” says Hutmacher. “Competition creates greatness. If you’re beating everybody by 50

points each time you played football or something, you wouldn’t get any better. Tight matches against good kids makes you better. I want to leave no doubt that I’m the best whether it’s wrestling, football, or any other place.” To ensure he’s always testing his limits, Hutmacher literally goes looking to get beat, driving an hour to Winner or Mitchell to wrestle against different athletes and mix up his regular training. But he’s quick to credit the friends he’s met and the fun he’s had along the way. “Anyone on my team or anyone else, I’m no better than they are,” says Hutmacher. “I may be able to beat them in a wrestling match, but to me being a good athlete is also about being a good person. I don’t need to go out and brag or show off too much – you can let your talking be done on the mat or in the football game.” When he’s not on the mat or gridiron, Hutmacher is also a shotputter who likes to hunt and fish the Missouri. In fact, Nebraska coaches
Scott Frost, Ryan Held and Tony Tuioti took Hutmacher and his family fishing 20 minutes south of Lincoln during his spring official visit. Wooing aside, Hutmacher weighed his choices, which included Wisconsin and Oregon, carefully. “It was honestly a really, really tough decision,” says Hutmacher. “I’m really going to miss wrestling. With football, you’re on the field with your helmet and shoulder pads, you don’t really get to talk with the guys. At wrestling tournaments, you meet a lot of great people. I’m going to miss the camaraderie. But football is where I feel I have the most potential to succeed.” SDPB livestreams and broadcasts all matches at the South Dakota State Wrestling Championships, February 27-29. Raised in Wessington Springs and Kimball, and a graduate of Kimball High School, Tupper earned his bachelor’s degree in journalism from South Dakota State University. We spend about one-third of our lives sleeping. Why? Believe it or not, scientists don’t know for sure. But evidence is building that sleep may play a crucial role in strengthening memories and facilitating learning, not just in humans but in most animals. NOVA scienceNOW visits research labs at the University of Pennsylvania and MIT, where scientists are peering into the brains of dozing flies and rats to understand the connection between sleep and memory. PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS Following the Civil War, all-Black towns emerged in what is now modern-day Oklahoma. By 1905, Black families seeking to make a new start enjoyed fellowship and got a reprieve from widespread racism. They acquired one and a half million acres of land in the state. Initially founded in an effort to convince the United States to create an all-Black state, most of these towns have since been swallowed up by nearby counties and cities, but a few cling heroically to life. Residents now fight to ensure that their towns retain independence and character. Local community members and historians give contemporary commentary as the story unfolds on America ReFramed Struggle & Hope.
At the intersection of racial identity, historical narrative and international commerce, Independent Lens Black Memorabilia follows the propagation of demeaning representations of African Americans. From industrial China to the rural South to Brooklyn, meet the people who reproduce, consume and reclaim these racially charged objects. SDPB2: Tuesday, Feb. 4, 6pm (5 MT)
Prince Among Slaves tells the story of Abdul Rahman, a trilingual military general and heir to a West African nation the size of Great Britain, who did not return to Africa for 40 years. In that time, he toiled on Foster’s plantation. He married a fellow slave, Isabella, and they had nine children. Gradually, he also became the most famous African in America, attracting the support of President John Quincy Adams and Secretary of State Henry Clay. Abdul Rahman returned to Africa at the age 67, only to fall ill and die just as word of his return reached his former kingdom. Throughout a life of Shakespearean dimensions, Abdul Rahman maintained his dignity and hope for the freedom of his people. SDPB2: Monday, Feb. 10, 6pm (5 MT)
On the morning of July 16, 1949, a young Lake County farm wife accused four young black men of rape. The case of The Groveland Four played out over several years, and led to a race riot, torture, multiple murders, two trials, a Supreme Court reversal and the assassination of a Florida civil rights leader. Remember the case that helped lay a foundation for the end of Jim Crow segregation and the start of the Civil Rights Movement.

Terry Mattke and Paul Hendrix are on an important mission, donning the roles of superheroes to bring joy to sick children. Loving Arms, a new play by University of Sioux Falls (USF) English professor Kevin Cole premieres at USF February 19. USF theatre professor Joe Obermueller directs the work, which explores art, relationships and the threat of violence as three strangers – an unemployed linguist, a city traffic manager, and a docent—forge an unlikely friendship in conversation about two paintings: one by Artemisia Gentileschi and one by Michelangelo Caravaggio while at a world famous art museum. As the three celebrate their newfound friendship, an American shooter enters. Can what happens next be considered parable, allegory, or just another day in America? Cole and Obermueller discuss staging the work.

Every summer since 2011, “the play is the thing” at Prentis Park in Vermillion. The South Dakota Shakespeare Festival stages a work by the bard in the park’s stone amphitheater, an outdoor performance space constructed in 1937 by the WPA. Actors and technical hands from throughout South Dakota and the U.S. converge in this town of 10,000 for several weeks of rehearsals, set-building, and costume creation. While in Vermillion, the cast and crew gather with South Dakotans for
performances and workshops that transcend Shakespeare. Meet West Coast-based actor Kenny Ramos (Diegueño Iipay/Kumeyaay) who led students like Kendra Elk Looks Back of He Dog and Kevin Hare (Ihanktonwan) of Wagner through theatre workshops, including a reading of Mary Kathryn Nagle’s play Return to Niobrara, about Chief Standing Bear’s case against the U.S. “It directly deals with Ponca and Omaha histories and stories,” says Ramos. “Bright Eyes, who is the daughter of Chief Iron Eye of the Omaha people, and here we are, in what is Omaha territory.” Elk Looks Back and Hare share their experiences with fine arts and representation. “I played the dad in one of the plays,” says Hare. “I got to experience what it’s like for parenthood figures of Native American children to experience what it’s like for their children to be discriminated against for who they are. It puts you in a place where you

can experience it almost firsthand. You can see what it’s like for other people to be in the situations that they’re in.” Traverse to southeast South Dakota and appreciate the creativity in this little corner of the state, in an all new Dakota Life.
