(Right) One of the enduring love stories of Downton is that of Anna, the head housemaid, and Mr. Bates, the Earl’s valet. But love doesn’t follow a smooth path, and violence by a visiting servant and the evil intentions of Thomas, an under-butler consumed by jealousy and ambition, are still a problem.

(Above) The widowed Lady Mary, who has a son, George, is now the heir. She has considerable cachet as a good catch and has a beau or two. Widower Tom Branson, the chauffeur who married Lady Sibyl, helps manage the estate.

In a nutshell – there’s an Earl, who marries a wealthy American to save the estate, where there are lots of servants, who have their own problems. The peers have three daughters, which is a problem, since they need a boy to inherit. The would-be heir, a cousin, drowns on the Titanic and we’re off. After four seasons of romance, scandal, plotting, bickering and love, Season 5 of Downton Abbey begins on Sunday, Jan. 4, at 8pm (7 MT). Lord Grantham is reluctantly sharing the operation of Downton Abbey with his daughter, Mary, and son-in-law, Tom. Mary did her duty, and married Matthew, the next male in line for Downton (an even more distant relative), but they were in love, so it’s all good, except he died. Mary was depressed, but now she’s better and flirting a bit. Tom, meanwhile, was married to daughter two, Lady Sibyl, even though he was a lowly chauffeur (horrors!). She died. The third daughter, Lady Edith, is pregnant 4

out of wedlock (double horrors!). Meanwhile, in the servants’ quarters there’s a bit of mayhem, theft, murder, bribery, thwarted romance and jealousy, but Mr. Carson, the butler, keeps them in line, sort of. Mr. Bates, the valet, and Anna, head maid, are in love, but Mr. Bates’ wife is a problem. She dies. Bates goes to prison for a second time, though he didn’t do it – either time. Then he’s out of prison, but could he end up there again? Meanwhile, the jealous Thomas, who has risen from footman to underbutler, is still making trouble for lots of people. Lord Grantham’s mom is a bit of a pill; Matthew’s mom is a do-gooder; and Cora (Lord Grantham’s wife) has a mom who’s a corker.

Ready for Season 5?

One of the Downton daughters, Lady Edith (right), has a dark secret. She was pregnant out of wedlock – in a society where such a thing is not acceptable. Edith, accustomed to living in her sisters’ shadows, must deal with the consequences. Her mother, Cora (played by Elizabeth McGovern), is Countess of Grantham.

(Below) Thomas, who has risen from footman to under-butler, is constantly on the lookout for ways to make trouble. He is cruel and devious, and, has a secret of his own.

Dame Maggie Smith returns as the status conscious Violet, Dowager Countess of Grantham. The widowed mother of Robert, the Earl of Grantham, is known for her barbed snobbish quips. “Surely, servants are human beings, too,” says Isobel Crawley, mother of Matthew, the deceased husband of Mary. “Yes,” says Violet, “Preferably on their days off.”

LeRoy Robert Ripley rose to fame during the Great Depression, transforming himself into an entertainer who mesmerized the nation with his razzle-dazzle blend of homespun Americana, colorful exotica and freakish oddities. Over three decades, his “Believe It or Not!” franchise grew into an entertainment empire. At the center of it all was Ripley, whose obsession with the odd and keen eye for the curious made him one of the richest men in the country.

NOVA follows the search for the elusive Higgs Boson particle in Big Bang Machine. A year and a half ago, scientists at the giant atom smashing facility at CERN announced the discovery of a subatomic particle that could be the Higgs Boson, thought to be responsible for giving all the stuff in the universe its mass. Since it was first proposed nearly 50 years ago, the Higgs has been the holy grail of particle physicists: in finding it they validate the “standard model” that underlies all of modern physics. Do new discoveries await as CERN’s giant collider switches on at higher power this year? SDPB1: Wednesday, Jan. 14, 8pm (7 MT) SDPB2: Thursday, Jan. 15, 6pm (5 MT) & 11pm (10 MT)

History Makes Mark on Dakota Life Start out the New Year with a new episode of Dakota Life. In January the SDPB Television show will look at pioneer letters, a project to digitize state history and the origination of “hog house” in reference to legislation. The program debuts on Thursday, Jan.1, at 8pm (7 MT) with an encore on Sunday, Jan. 4, at 1pm (Noon MT). The monthly half-hour program, the signature features magazine for SDPB Television, looks at the fascinating people, places and things that make up our great state. January’s episode includes: • Letters from the Attic with Phyllis Schrag – The humanities scholar makes a dramatic presentation using letters that document life in Dakota Territory.

• Digitizing History – Archivists from state univerisities are using the technology of today to preserve the stories and pictures of the past. • Legislative Maneuvering – The use of “hog house” to describe the workings of a legislative body originated in South Dakota. • New Life, Old Building – The building that once housed the School for the Blind in Gary is now a resort. Dakota Life airs several times during the month to give viewers a chance to tune in. Past episodes are available at SDPB.org/DakotaLife. The program airs statewide on SDPB and nationwide on RFD-TV.

In the heart of the Antarctic Peninsula, there’s a post office surrounded by jaw-dropping scenery and 3,000 gentoo penguins. Every summer, as staff put stamps on postcards, the penguins return from their fishing grounds to trek nearly two miles across sea ice and snow, rush to find a partner, build a nest, lay eggs and protect them from predators, and finally get down to the task of raising their young. Nature tells the story in Penguin Post Office. SDPB1: Wednesday, Jan. 28, 7pm (6 MT)

In November 1997, when the skeletal remains of at least 28 bodies were unearthed in the basement of an elegant townhouse, police feared it was the work of a serial killer. But when research indicated the bones actually dated to the mid-1700s, the implications became even more dramatic. This was no ordinary house: 36 Craven Street was the former residence of one of the most important men in American history: Benjamin Franklin. Secrets of the Dead asks a shocking question in Ben Franklin’s Bones. Could one of America’s most iconic figures have been responsible for the bones in the basement?

Be an MVP for MPV Friends Announces Campaign for New Mobile Production Vehicle SDPB needs a new mobile production vehicle and we’re asking you to help. Whether you’re a fan of South Dakota High School sports and music specials or an avid follower of action in the state capitol, you have benefitted from SDPB Television’s mobile production studio. The RV that houses the mobile studio has been criss-crossing our state for more than a decade, racking up a lot of miles. The equipment aboard the RV, a 30-foot Winnegbago, is standard definition, and is fast becoming obsolete. “It’s time for a new mobile studio,” says Friends of SDPB CEO Ryan Howlett. “Friends of SDPB is committing to raise more than $200,000 to help.” The cost of a new, fully outfitted truck will be about $733,000, and Friends of SDPB will raise $233,000 of that amount by this summer. The network will fit the rest of the cost into the capital improvements budget.

“Donations, which are tax deductible, will provide a true benefit to people throughout the state of South Dakota,” Howlett said. “Last year, SDPB Television presented more than 650 hours of programming from remote locations.”

You Can Help

Send donations to Friends of SDPB, 815 Medary Ave, Brookings, SD 57006, or contact Friends at 800-333-0789 or Friends@SDPB.org.

Photos show how a new mobile studio would be outfitted for SDPB.

As part of Friends of SDPB, Johnson will work with major donors and on projects like the campaign to replace SDPB’s mobile production

vehicle. Her focus will be Northeast South Dakota and the Black Hills region.
