James Anderson Ranch was established in 1876 in the Centennial Valley near Spearfish. It expanded to become the Frawley Ranch and is now a development known as “Elkhorn Ridge.

West River Expanse - The Frawley Ranch Henry Frawley was among the thousands of fortune-seekers and settlers who came to Deadwood in 1877, just after the Fort Laramie Treaty was broken. Originally from New York and a graduate of the University of Wisconsin law school, Frawley quickly established a successful law practice, at times representing the interests of the railroads and gold mines running through and taking over the Black Hills. In 1890, Henry Frawley married the daughter of a successful rancher operating in the Centennial Valley, north of Deadwood and just east of Spearfish. Frawley purchased his own ranch in Centennial Valley and began to acquire more land as it became available. By 1913 Frawley owned more than 4,500 acres on the edge of the northern Black Hills. Unfortunately, Henry Frawley’s fortunes turned after a bad business deal in 1920. He suffered a “nervous breakdown” and was hospitalized in Nebraska where he died in 1927. Henry Frawley’s wife Christina ran the ranch from 1920 until 1942 when she passed it on to her eldest son Henry James, who in turn passed in on to his son Henry James “Hank” Frawley Jr. Hank Frawley and his wife Molly kept the property whole and operating as a ranch. The Frawley Ranch was named a National Historic Landmark in 1974. Economic and other changes in the ag industry took their toll on the ranch during the 1980s. By the mid-1990s, it had seen its best days as a large ag operation. Hank Frawley died in 2017 and the ranch was eventually sold to a Denver developer, who promised to keep the property and the historical structures of the ranch intact. Nearly $50 million has been spent on restoration of the historic stone courtyard barn and other original buildings. Most of the land, some 3000 acres, has been enrolled in a federal conservation program. Now called “Elkhorn Ridge,” the development features single and multi-family homes, a golf course, a luxury RV park, and an event center.

Freeman’s Heritage Hall - East River Haven for German Russians For more than a century, ethnic Germans living in Russia had been allowed to speak their native language, run their own schools and other social institutions and worship as they pleased. When that began to change in the mid-1800s, tens of thousands of these Germans in Russia were forced or otherwise strongly motivated to leave. Many came to the northern Great Plains, settling from southern Canada through the Dakotas into Nebraska and Kansas. They spoke German and most were Anabaptists – Amish, Hutterite, and Mennonite. In the 1870s, three distinct groups of ethnic Germans from different regions of the Ukraine settled in and around the town that would become Freeman, South Dakota. These Hutterite, Swiss and Low German Mennonites carved out a new life among the Scandinavian other European immigrants attempting to do the same thing on land formerly owned or inhabited by Native Americans. Freeman’s Heritage Hall Museum is a repository for many of the artifacts and mementos of life in the area from settlement days to contemporary times. Immigrant trunks, old farm implements, and other vintage objects of everyday life are on display – from furniture to kitchen utensils. There are restored churches, a school, and a farm house constructed and furnished in a style that is unique to the Germans from Russia. The museum also houses an archive containing thousands of books, documents, and other artifacts that chronicle some of the area’s history from settlement to the present day. SDPB’s Images of the Past is a multiplatform project comprised of documentaries, blogs, and interviews presenting South Dakota history. SDPB producer Brian Gevik works closely with South Dakota historians, museum professionals, archivists and others to provide this service. See SDPB.org/ImagesOfThePast The first installment of Images of the Past: Settlement Stories premieres on SDPB1 Monday, January 15, 8pm (7 MT). Masterpiece Victoria Jenna Coleman (Doctor Who) returns for a second season as the young queen who wants it all— romance, power, an heir, and personal freedom. Dame Diana Rigg (Game of Thrones, The Avengers), joins the cast as the Duchess of Buccleuch, the court’s new Mistress of the Robes—a fount of old-fashioned good sense for the queen, who is now in the throes of motherhood. Tom Hughes (Dancing on the Edge) stars as the queen’s smoldering consort, Prince Albert. Season 2 finds Victoria adapting to motherhood after the birth of her first child, a daughter (to the disappointment of many). Meanwhile, the disaster of the Anglo-Afghan War unfolds abroad, and the catastrophic Irish potato famine begins to wreak havoc. In other foreign affairs, a

royal state visit to France is in the offing. Most intriguing to Prince Albert is the budding Industrial Revolution, which is now sweeping England. There is Charles Babbage’s mechanical calculator, a collaborative project with the bewitching Ada Lovelace, daughter of the scandalous Lord Byron. Then there is William Fothergill Cooke’s miraculous electrical telegraph, not to mention Marc Isambard Brunel’s daring—and dangerous—Thames Tunnel. What an extraordinary time to be Queen! Victoria Season 2 airs in seven episodes created and scripted by bestselling novelist Daisy Goodwin (The Fortune Hunter). It premieres Sunday, Jan. 14, 8pm (7 MT) on SDPB1.

Exploring some of history’s most dramatic events through the personal stories of those who experienced them, We’ll Meet Again brings together people whose lives intersected at pivotal moments. Executive-produced and reported by Ann Curry, each episode of the six-part series reveals the powerful bonds forged among people who now, against the odds, have the chance to reunite with someone who transformed their life. Viewers will follow stories like the Vietnam War baby desperate to find the American father she last saw 40 years ago to the military chaplain who helped a stranger through the trauma of 9/11, from a Japanese-American girl interned in 1942 who never forgot a helpful classmate to civil rights workers whose lives were forever changed by deep relationships formed in the 1960s South. Like Finding Your Roots, We’ll Meet Again searches for clues in marriage records and war and immigration documents, and combs archives, but this time to reunite those separated by time and distance. “This series helps people separated 12

by conflict, war and humanitarian disasters find each other again and reveals untold stories of courage, survival, friendship and even love,” said Curry. “This is human history — not from the point of view of kings or politicians or generals — but of everyday people on the front lines of massive events they have no way to control. Their stories tell us something about what we are made of.” “Children of WWII” - Tuesday, Jan. 23, 7pm (6 MT) Following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, the U.S. entered World War II. Two children whose lives were forever changed by the war search for lost friends. Reiko, a Japanese-American woman sent to an internment camp as a child, hopes to find the classmate who stood by her in the face of anti-Japanese sentiment. Peter, who fled the Nazis with his parents in 1938, searches for the family who befriended him in the last refuge open to the German Jews: the Shanghai Ghetto. “Rescued from Mt. May 18, 1980, 57 people were killed and hundreds more injured. Volcanic ash was scattered across 11 states. In this episode, two people who survived the disaster reveal how the experience influenced their lives. Mindy, a trainee scientist whose inspirational team leader was killed by the blast wants to find his family to let them know he saved her life. Sue hopes to find the brave helicopter pilot who risked his own life to rescue her.

James Baldwin and the American Dream

Hosea Williams and John Lewis lead a Selma to Montgomery march in 1965.

WNEW has become NYC’s flagship FOX network station. The United States twice elected and bid farewell to its first African American president. Black Lives Matter is entering its fifth year and the Supreme Court is currently deliberating the constitutionality of partisan gerrymandering with Gill v. Whitford. This month, SDPB airs the 2016 Academy Award-nominated documentary I Am Not Your Negro. Narrated by Samuel L. Jackson, I Am Not Your Negro is based on Baldwin’s unfinished book addressing the lives and bloody deaths of Medgar Evers, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Malcom X – all black leaders assassinated in the 1960s. NYT’s A. O. Scott wrote, “Whatever you think about the past and future of what used to be called ‘race relations’ — white supremacy and the resistance to it, in plainer English — this movie will make you think again, and may even change your mind.” The film My Childhood is

difficult to track down. No copies are available at libraries in South Dakota. Argus-Leader archives indicate the film was shown April 20, 1976, as part of the Sioux Falls Public Library film series. Part 2 of the film, James Baldwin’s Harlem, is available on YouTube, but cursory searches brought no hits for Hubert Humphrey’s South Dakota. Watching all three films and noting how much and how little has changed would make for compelling, and recommended, viewing for any evening. Independent Lens: I Am Not Your Negro

On the evening of June 1, 1964, the same month civil rights groups launched the intensive black voter registration drive known as Freedom Summer, New York City television station WNEW broadcast a special program titled My Childhood: Hubert Humphrey's South Dakota & James Baldwin's Harlem. The one-hour, black-and-white documentary was comprised of two separate segments, each depicting through film, photos and music, Humphrey’s youth in white, rural Doland, SD, and Baldwin’s formative years in urban, African-American Harlem, respectively. Humphrey, a pharmacist’s son, and Baldwin, whose stepfather was a minister, narrate the footage by recollecting intense boyhood memories, but neither appear in the film. A New York Times (NYT) review published the day of its premiere read: “‘My Childhood’ is recommended viewing for this evening… Senator Humphrey's remembrance of childhood delights is a joy. His appreciation of small town life and his description of what home meant to him is conveyed in language that is touching and sincere… The pictorial transition to Harlem and Mr. Baldwin's despairing narrative offer a shattering comparison. The ugliness and loneliness of Harlem are presented on the screen as Mr. Baldwin speaks of his father in terms as harsh as those he uses in his printed works. The residue of hatred that he feels he inherited, he says, led him to despise white and black people alike—to despise the world.” Fifty-three years since that broadcast during Freedom Summer,

In the Moment: A Year Later

Lori Walsh.

In the Moment with Lori Walsh debuted on SDPB Radio one year ago, and in the 12 months since its premiere, the two-hour program has hosted hundreds of local and national guests discussing the issues of the day. Hosted by Lori Walsh, In the Moment (or, “ItMo,” to which its affectionally referred internally) is produced by Steve Zwemke and Chris Laughery. We checked in with Lori about ItMo’s debut year. Katy Beem: You and the team have now logged a year producing In the Moment. How have you found a rhythm for a cycle of producing mostly live radio 2-hours daily, Monday through Friday? Lori Walsh: “I wouldn’t call it a cycle so much as I’d call it full immersion. We are constantly streamlining our processes and systems so we can concentrate on the work that matters – bringing compelling stories of South Dakota to listeners with the highest journalistic integrity. We’re building the scaffolding as we go, and sometimes 18

the behind-the-scenes work races to keep up with the abundance of ideas and plans and opportunities. We are building the support structure though. Mostly that work has been done by the show’s remarkable producers, Steve Zwemke and Chris Laughery. I’m indebted to them daily.” KB: It’s been a year of sobering news stories: sexual harassment allegations, mass shootings, drought in SD, pipeline spills — how do you approach building a program in the midst of news cycles that try the souls of reporters and listeners alike? LW: “I find people want to talk about the sobering news stories. They want smart journalism and thoughtful context. They expect us to provide the balance and the perspective they can’t find anywhere else: ‘What are the questions that move this conversation forward? What does this mean in South Dakota for South Dakotans?’ When NPR is providing world-class coverage of a topic, In the Moment turns to those stories you’re not seeing on the national news. It’s a daily reminder to look to

our own communities and see what’s happening right here in the state. That’s where you find the innovative solutions, the inspiration, the tenacity, and the hopefulness.” KB: Any hard-earned lessons you can share with budding journalists? LW: “Find a place to work where you can trust the leadership. Cara Hetland (ItMo’s executive producer and SDPB’s Director of Radio) often tells us where we’re going before we believe we can get there! Find a place where you believe wholeheartedly in the mission, otherwise, what’s the point? Remember this job is an incredible privilege. Slow down, take care of yourself, and give yourself time every day just to think. KB: What have been some highlights from 2017? LW: “Opening the Black Hills Bureau and broadcasting from that space was tremendous. We got to see first-hand the phenomenal community support for SDPB in a way I didn’t know was possible. The Vietnam conversations changed me personally and professionally. Also, I’m deeply moved by the artists, authors, and musicians of this state. Their generosity, creativity, insight, and joy transforms us every week. It’s an honor to share that with listeners across the state and across the country via the Internet.” KB: What do listeners have to look forward to in 2018? LW: “We’re looking to deepen and improve our coverage of the South Dakota state legislature. SDPB opens a new studio in Sioux Falls in 2018 that offers a bounty of opportunities for community conversations, live music, and in-depth radio interviews simultaneously broadcast online. Plus, expect to see more South Dakota voices brought to you with high-quality audio from South Dakota communities such as Brookings. The engineers at SDPB are rapidly becoming my personal heroes.” In the Moment airs MondayFriday on SDPB Radio and SDPB.org at 11am-1pm (10am-Noon MT).
