Alice Sebold, whose novel The Lovely Bones is featured on PBS’s The Great American Read America’s 100 Favorite Books List, will be at the South Dakota Festival of Books as part of SDPB’s partnership with the South Dakota Humanities Council (SDHC). At the Festival of Books, Sebold will speak to college students and participate in an evening keynote event, an on-stage conversation with Lori Walsh, host of SDPB’s In the Moment, Friday, Sept. 21, in Brookings. See sdbookfestival.com for details. Publishers Weekly called The Lovely Bones, “A small but far from minor miracle. Sebold has taken a grim, media-exploited subject and fashioned from it a story that is both tragic and full of light and grace. The description of the crime is chilling, but never vulgar, and Sebold maintains this delicate balance between homely and horrid as she depicts the progress of grief for Susie’s family and friends.” Published in 2002, the novel became an unprecedented international bestseller, with translations in over 45 languages and American sales alone of more than five million copies. The 2009 film version starred Rachel Weisz, Susan Sarandon and Stanley Tucci. The book was also featured in Oprah’s Book Club and Indies Choice Book Award for Adult Fiction.

Fifteen years later, they reunite in a newly democratic Nigeria, and reignite their passion—for each other and for their homeland. The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak (2007) Foster girl Liesel Meminger scratches out a meager existence in Munich by stealing when she encounters something she can’t resist– books. When Justin Tupper and his son Taylor returned to their ranch near St. Onge, SD, from the national high school rodeo competition four years back, along with their tack and horses, they brought back an idea. After Taylor competed in the saddle bronc events at the Sweetwater Events Complex in Rock Springs, Wyoming, he and his dad spontaneously volunteered alongside other high school rodeo athletes and families to show the rodeo ropes to kids with physical and developmental disabilities. What Justin experienced touched him deeply. “They brought folks in on buses from all over, and I was amazed by how many people there were and how the local kids reacted with them,” says Justin. “I told my son we better go check that out and see what it’s all about.” As another volunteer led, Justin and Taylor flanked an aspiring rider as his horse gently walked a barrel pattern. “The minute this young gentleman got on, he threw his hands in the air and it was just jubilee and happiness,” says Justin. “It brought new light to everyday living and the things we take for granted.” Back in Belle Fourche, Justin put forth the idea of organizing a similar event to the Black Hills Roundup committee, which he chairs. “The Roundup tries to do different events that help the community,” says Justin. “This event was paramount to me, and I felt to do it right, we needed to pair with high school kids because what I saw back in Rock Springs was those high school kids getting as much out of it and more as the kids they were helping through the rodeo. I really believe that.”

The state high school rodeo community agreed, and carved time and space for the special rodeo to take place during the annual high school championships, held every June in Belle Fourche. Together with the Roundup committee, Justin reached out to SunCatchers Therapeutic Riding Academy, a Rapid City non-profit that provides equine activities for special needs individuals. SunCatchers provided the specially trained, gentle horses and saddles needed by riders with physical or developmental issues. In 2016, the first year Justin and company got the special rodeo up and running, the event attracted over 80 participants and Justin figures over 100 of the high school rodeo contestants worked side-by-side with them. When Justin says “side-by-side,” it can be interpreted literally. One of his favorite experiences from the special rodeo’s first year involves high school volunteers taking his directions to heart. “I announced that pairs of high school kids needed to reach out to an individual and stay with them through the events,” says Justin. “One older lady decided she’d rather just sit and watch. Well, the rodeo kids sat right down with her and just stayed right there visiting with her until the rodeo was over. It’s amazing what we get from those kids.” Rhonda Fuhrer has been with the special rodeo since its inception. Rhonda, who supervises Belle Fourche’s medical clinic, is mother to two riders: 15-year-old Lan, who’s

been rodeoing since fifth grade, and 18-year-old Morgan. Rhonda knows intimately the joy riding can bring to people with limited mobility. “Morgan has cerebral palsy,” says Rhonda. “She doesn’t walk or talk and she’s completely dependent on us. Our family spends a lot of our time riding and practicing at an arena. We would put Morgan on a horse and she loved it. I think she feels like she’s doing what all the other kids are doing. Seeing how much she enjoys that, feeling like she’s a part of the group, made me want to let the other kids and adults experience that.” In addition to roping and riding, the special rodeo includes a petting zoo, pictures with the rodeo queens, and a meal, all supplied by area sponsors and volunteers. After the events, each participant visits the prize table, which gleams with shiny belt buckles, trophies, and plaques – prizes won in rodeos past and donated by their recipients. “One of my favorite stories is when one year high-schooler Taylor Bothwell from Pierre was paired with an older gentleman,” says Rhonda. “She’d taken him around to all the different events, then to the awards table. He’s looking at the different buckles, then he looked at hers and said, ‘I like your buckle.’ Well, she took it right off and gave it to him. No hesitation.” More volunteers and donors have signed on to help the special rodeo grow. A gift from a local bank enabled the building of a new, portable ramp

that lifts limited-mobility riders up into the saddle. The event is free to all participants and organizers hope to engage more individuals and families, even helping with costs for travel. Nonetheless, severe staffing shortages at facilities for people with disabilities can hamper participation. Oahe Inc., a special needs organization in Pierre that has sent two busloads of participants since the special rodeo’s beginning won’t make it this year. “Unfortunately, they’re in a staffing crisis and don’t have the staff to get any of the residents here this year,” says Rhonda. “That’s probably been one of the biggest challenges,” says Justin. “With the amount of high school kids we have to volunteer, we can accommodate many more. We’ve been reaching out as far as Gillette. We really believe we have the resources to even reach more people.” “People, they’re just so giving with this event,” says Rhonda. “I think it makes everyone feel good, so people want to be a part of it. People just show up that day and pitch in where we need help.” For more information about the Black Hills Roundup Special Rodeo, contact Rhonda Fuhrer at 605-210-3267 or check out the Black Hills Roundup Special Rodeo Facebook page. The special rodeo takes place each June during the South Dakota High School Rodeo Championships. Finals air Thursday, July 5, at 8pm (7 MT) and Sunday, July 8, at 1pm (noon MT) on SDPB1. July 2018

American ReFramed Farewell Ferris Wheel Carnivals have a delightful place in the American imagination, with childhood memories of family fun, fantasy, and summer love. But rising expenses and changes in U.S. labor patterns mean this national pastime is nearly extinct. This intriguing documentary is an inside look at the struggle of an industry trying to stay alive by employing Mexican migrant workers with a controversial visa.

Well Read Open a world of ideas through award-winning journalist Elisa Jaffe’s discussions of the latest books and in-depth conversations with noted authors. Following each interview, Seattle Times book editor Mary Ann Gwinn (former VP of the National Book Critics Circle) joins Jaffe to explore the literary themes of that week’s book and to recommend related authors and other reading material. AfroPop: First Friday & American Ascent Begin a musical journey in Oakland, CA, on First Friday. Thousands of people – rich and poor, young and old, black and white – gather in the streets of downtown. But after a teenager is murdered during the event, the future of First Fridays and the rebirth of Oakland itself is in peril. And on American Ascent, join the first African American expedition to tackle Denali, North America’s highest peak. In June 2013, nine African Americans set out to build a legacy and become role models for inner city kids and people of color all over America. SDPB2: Wednesday, July 4, 5 & 8pm (4 & 7 MT) Thursday, July 12, 5 & 8pm (4 & 7 MT)

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS SDPB3-TV Islands Without Cars

This new travel series takes a rare and whimsical look at life without cars, buses or trains. On small, remote and sparsely populated isles scattered throughout Europe, most of the inhabitants travel and transport goods by donkey, bicycle and other non-motorized vehicles. Staycation USA

Take a road trip through the U.S. and visit 10 Streets, 10 Monuments, and 10 Modern Marvels that transformed America.

10 That Changed America, hosted by Geoffrey Baer, explores the nation’s built environment with new episodes and a website that reveal the fascinating and often untold stories behind America’s streets, monuments and modern marvels.

Photo: Santos Ramos

10 Streets That Changed America Discover how streets have connected the nation, divided communities, and changed the way Americans live, work, and shop. Trace Broadway’s 400-year evolution: from Native American trail to Dutch trading route to the home of America’s first public transit service and an electrically-lighted theater district known as the “Great White Way.” This episode reveals how Broadway has become the poster child for the “complete streets” movement, in which automobiles take a back seat to more sustainable forms of transit. Ride from Boston to New York on the Boston Post Road, a dirt “highway” created for the nation’s first mail carriers. Take America’s oldest streetcar line out to some of the nation’s first suburbs in New Orleans, and in Detroit drive a Model T along America’s first mile of concrete-paved road. Explore a car-friendly street created by a 1920s entrepreneur who predicted that Los Angeles would be dominated by the automobile, and take a horse and carriage ride on a Brooklyn parkway built on the proposition that streets should be scenic. Streets featured are:

10 Monuments That Changed America Explore the stories behind ten American monuments and the historical moments that inspired them. Visit little-known locations like the Robert Gould Shaw and Massachusetts 54th Regiment Memorial, a sculptural masterpiece dedicated to one of the first AfricanAmerican units to serve in the Civil War, and learn the surprising stories behind American icons like the Statue of Liberty, which was devised as a propaganda piece by French republican politicians. It’s an episode full of epic battles fought over how to remember our past: from Maya Lin’s controversial design for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial to the ongoing controversies over Confederate monuments across the South. The episode also uncovers pivotal moments in the evolution of American monuments when daring artists found new ways to honor our history. SDPB1: Tuesday, July 17, 7pm (6 MT) SDPB2: Friday, July 20, 7pm (6 MT)

10 Modern Marvels That Changed America Celebrate those who have scoffed at the laws of nature and defied the naysayers — and sometimes even gravity — by undertaking these fantastic feats of engineering. Each story includes a fun physics lesson and a tale of human folly, beginning at the Erie Canal, a 363-mile long man-made waterway that was built in the 19th century by thousands of laborers using primitive hand tools. Learn how professional engineers connected our growing nation by building magnificent bridges, intricate rail networks, and a continent-wide system of freeways. Discover the extreme measures that engineers have taken to deliver water from distant rivers to our kitchen sinks. It’s easy to take these modern marvels for granted with today’s easy access to roads, bridges, and drinking water. But behind many of our daily conveniences was a clever engineer — and a remarkable story. SDPB1: Tuesday, July 24, 7pm (6 MT) SDPB2: Friday, July 27, 7pm (6 MT)

Detectorists (Season 3) A beloved hit in England, Detectorists follows two nerdy 40-something men with metal detectors, (Mackenzie Crook of The Office, Pirates of the Caribbean and Toby Jones of Harry Potter), who spend their days plodding along ploughed tracks and open fields, philosophizing and hoping to upend life’s tedium by unearthing the fortune of a lifetime. The Tunnel Vengeance The emotionally charged finale of the critically acclaimed bilingual crime thriller reunites Stephen Dillane (Game of Thrones) in his International Emmy award-winning role as Karl Roebuck with Clémence Poésy as Elise Wassermann. It’s the last outing of this beloved and unlikely Anglo-French partnership, beginning with their discovery of a burning fishing boat found on the English Channel.

Masterpiece Poldark (Season 2) Catch up before the fall premiere of Season 4, as Aidan Turner is the brooding Ross Poldark, a Redcoat who returns to Cornwall to gain his fortune from mining. Replete with dramatic love triangles, brandished bayonets and sweeping vistas of the windswept moors and granite cliffs of the Cornish landscape.

Masterpiece Endeavor (Season 5) The prequel to Inspector Morse, Endeavour’s fifth season begins with Morse having finally passed his Sergeant’s exams just as Oxford City Police merges into Thames Valley Constabulary creating uncertainty for everyone at Cowley CID. The Guardian said, “Russell Lewis’s Inspector Morse prequel – a clever, well-crafted whodunnit oozing with period detail – gets better and better.” SDPB1: Sundays, 8pm (7 MT)

Celebrate. Remember.

Vermillion commemorates its healthcare legacy through community art. In the era of telecare and online consultations, we can take for granted health care was not always a call or click away. Before the construction of Vermillion’s Dakota Hospital in 1935, residents of Clay and neighboring counties relied on a series of private hospitals in Vermillion, sometimes located in converted homes or hotels. Spearheaded by the Dakota Hospital Foundation, the formation of a three-story brick building was a modern medical marvel and a literal lifesaver for community members. The response to news that the building – where so many Vermillionites had been born, healed or passed away – would be demolished for the new Sanford Vermillion Medical Clinic was understandably mixed. “It really meant something for the folks that

were here,” says Jerry Yurtzenka, Vermillion resident and associate professor in Biomedical Sciences at USD. “I look at it as sometimes you have to destroy those old icons in order to build and have a great facility.” To commemorate the boosterism required to build the original building as well as the memories it housed, the Dakota Hospital Foundation turned to art. They commissioned sculptor and USD professor of art Christopher Meyer, who invited “over 150 community members of all various backgrounds, ages, shapes and sizes to model for hand models.” Assembly, the resulting bronze sculpture, now stands where Dakota Hospital tended residents for some 80 years. The documentary Celebrate. Remember: The Making of The

Dakota Hospital Memorial Project captures the making of the sculpture. SDPB1: Thursday, July 12, 8pm (7 MT) & Sunday, July 15, 1pm (Noon MT)

Live coverage from Lead, home of the U.S.’s largest particle physics experiment Over the next 10 years, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in Lead will expand the former Homestake Gold Mine to create the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF). The endeavor will require workers to remove over 870,000 tons of rock and erect a 70,000-ton neutrino detector. Once installed, the four-stories-high detector will receive a beam of neutrinos powered by DUNE, the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment, from Fermilab in Batavia, Illinois, 800

miles through the Earth. Christopher Mossey, Fermilab Deputy Director for the LBNF, is overseeing the project expansion. Mossey joins Cara Hetland on SDPB Radio’s Innovation, broadcasting live from SURF’s 4850 Level on Friday, July 13 at noon (11am MT) in conjunction with Neutrino Day X, the 10th annual science festival in Lead, SD.
