A Life’s Work: Paul Goble Illustrations of American Indian Stories

Throughout his life Goble steeped himself in nature. He moved to the Black Hills where he honed his craft among the pine trees and mountains for more than 40 years. Known internationally for his award-winning children’s books, Goble received the Caldecott Medal for “The Girl Who Loved Wild Horses”. Thirty “Paul Goble, Storyteller” is illustrations from various points of Goble’s career are contained in available for purchase at both the traveling exhibit. The Vietnam War: Legacies & Lessons in South Dakota

SDPB presents public previews of Ken Burns’ epic Vietnam War documentary. This June, SDPB proudly presents two preview screening events of Ken Burns’ The Vietnam War. The 30-minute preview provides a glimpse of Burns’ 10-part, 18-hour documentary premiering September 17 on SDPB. Veterans, veterans’ families, and the public are invited to the free screenings. A reception for veterans and their families follows each screening. At the event, South Dakota’s veterans of the Vietnam War and Vietnam Era are also invited to record brief interviews with SDPB about how their lives have been impacted by the war. Saturday, June 10, 4pm MT – Crazy Horse Memorial Welcome remarks from Vietnam combat veteran and author, Major Ed “Eagle Man” McGaa (Admission to Crazy Horse is waived between 3:30pm-5pm for those attending screening event.)

Deadwood Pioneer: A Face from the Past

An intact skull marked the first in a series of positive circumstances that would enable Lamie, historians, and forensics experts to hone in on the identity of the remains. Closer inspection at the site revealed a fully articulated coffin burial, which Lamie and her fellow state archeologist Matthew Busch spent a day-and-a-half excavating: pick-axing through rocky layers and tree roots, sifting backhoe loads, and brushing off and bagging bones. Soon they unearthed funerary objects and fabric samples, including three spent 50-70 government-round cartridge cases tucked into the individual’s pocket, evidence that the coffin’s inhabitant had been honored with a three-volley funeral salute – a sign during gold rush times of an elevated socioeconomic status. But the skull was the true keystone, particularly the teeth. As time trooped on six-feet above and the area developed from a jumble of creekside mining camps into Deadwood’s commercial and residential districts, visits to the dentist paid by this individual a century-and-a-half ago metamorphosed into grave goods that proved invaluable to more closely identifying the person who had been laid to rest. Dr. Lennard Hopper of Deadwood Dental conducted initial x-rays. Further dental forensics showed the individual had received early dental care and lived in a “fluorosis belt” as a youth, cementing the theory he had come from some means. He’d also been a habitual smokeless tobacco user who preferred a pinch between his right-side teeth and gum. Spectral analysis by David R. Lingenfelter at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology decoded the metallic make-up of his dental reconstructions, helping researchers place where in 1800s America the individual may have obtained dentistry. Forensics conducted earlier had determined the individual was a male who was between the ages of 18-30 when he died. DNA analysis indicated he was a red-headed, brown-eyed Caucasian of Western European ancestry. As forensic analysis continued, Lamie and her assistant Laura Clarke at the Archeological Research Center

scoured the Lawrence County Death Register and historic newspapers for death accounts. Deadwood City Archivist Michael Runge had already amassed a body of research on the first cemetery when remains were found back in 2006. Cross-referencing those names with a ledger of people interred at Mount Mariah Cemetery narrowed the field of likely candidates to a small degree, but the winnowing process has been formidable. Death records from Deadwood’s early days numbered in the hundreds and were often arcane. “When you look at the historic newspapers, the ones that covered the day-to-day activities of the mining camps, you do see occasional obituaries,” says Runge. “But it just says ‘John Smith

died yesterday and is buried in the Deadwood Cemetery.’ And that’s all you have to go on.” Lamie quips that when she initially sent the skeletal remains to forensic anthropologist Dr. Diane France in Colorado, she hoped for a unique cause of death that could hasten identification, but a lack of trauma to the remains ruled out the kind of death – hangings, mining explosions, or shootings – that might make headlines or show up on the skeleton. “There was a multitude of ways to die in early Deadwood,” says Lamie. “There would have been some unsanitary conditions. Of course, there was smallpox, the flu, mountain fevers – things that today we would probably call tuberculosis or dysentery. One historical record even indicates an individual died from eating a dozen hardboiled eggs.”

The researchers eventually compiled a database of approximately 130 possible direct hits of young men who died non-violent deaths, ultimately narrowed to 37 individuals of interest. Of those, Lamie favors two. Both were doctors, one a member of the New York National Guard and Deadwood militia who’d hung a shingle in Deadwood. Another was a recent med school graduate from Pennsylvania who took his own life using chloroform. The remains were reinterred at Mount Moriah Cemetery in a 2016 ceremony, but the quest to solve the individual’s identity continues. Dr. France, whom Lamie calls “the DNA detective,” is conducting genealogical research and working to match the individual’s DNA profile with DNA databases. DNA analysis and skull casting enabled a forensic sketch. The skull that so concerned Lamie back in 2012 now springs to life in the artist’s rendering – a redhaired young man whose green eyes once looked out upon the muddy streets and undeveloped hills of early Deadwood. Lamie thinks learning about this individual helps demystify the romance of settling the American west and ultimately contributes to an understanding of ourselves. “Deadwood really was a microcosm,” says Lamie. “People came to Deadwood from all over the United States and other countries. This hard evidence and research gives us a more accurate picture.” For Lamie, who often works with artifacts, unearthing the history of Deadwood’s unknown pioneer has been exciting. “When you’re working with human skeletal remains, it’s always clear that this was an individual. He was purposefully buried. He had a life and he played a role in history.” A fascinating blend of science and history, SDPB’s latest documentary Deadwood Pioneer: A Face from the Past airs Thursday, June 15, 8pm (7 MT) & Sunday, June 18 at 1pm (noon MT) on SDPB1. A Powerful New Season of POV SDPB says goodbye and thank you to two members of the Board of Directors for Educational Telecommunications as they retire from their service. Rick Knobe was appointed to the board in 2003. A former mayor of Sioux Falls, Rick recently retired from a 30-year stint at KSOO Radio where he most recently hosted Viewpoint University. Dr. Gerry Schlenker was appointed in 2008. Dr. Schlenker has been the director of the Media Studies program at the University of Sioux Falls for nearly 30 years and is retiring at the end of the school year. Mr. Knobe and Dr. Schlenker were honored for their service to SDPB at a recent board meeting.

Effervescent teen Dalya goes to Catholic high school and her mother, Rudayna, enrolls in college as they both walk the line between their Muslim values and the new world in which they find themselves. 4.1 Miles - This Oscar®-nominated short film by Daphne Matziaraki follows a day in the life of Kyriakos Papadopoulos, a captain in the Greek coast guard who is caught in the middle of the refugee crisis in which Europe is embroiled. Despite limited resources, the captain and his crew attempt to save thousands of migrants from drowning in the Aegean Sea. The Radio Television Digital News Association has been honoring outstanding achievements in electronic journalism with the Edward R. Murrow Awards since 1971. Murrow’s pursuit of excellence in journalism embodies the spirit of the awards that carry his name. Murrow Award recipients demonstrate the spirit of excellence that Edward R. Murrow made a standard for the broadcast news profession. These SDPB reporters and news stories are recipients of the following awards: Feature Reporting - “Black Hills Pioneer Turns 140” by Jim Kent (reporter/producer). The Black Hills Pioneer newspaper celebrated its 140th anniversary this year. Founded in 1876, the northern Black Hills publication is the oldest newspaper and business in Western South Dakota. SDPB visited with publisher Letitia Lister at the

Pioneer’s Spearfish offices to discuss the paper’s early days and history as well as what role it plays in the community today. Journey to the Pine Ridge Reservation to hear an important Lakota connection between the Earth and the stars. When Jhon Goes In Center (Oglala Lakota) of Pine Ridge took SDPB foraging for timpsila (prairie turnip) on his family’s land last summer, he shared the legend of Star Boy as his grandmother shared it with him gathering timpsila. “Timpsila has a long tap root,” says Goes In Center. “It goes way down into the Earth, bringing up nutrients from the underworld that surface through a flower. All the tribes within the Great Plains have an affiliation with this plant, not only its nutritional value but its lore.” Tune in as Goes In Center shares the legend of Star 20

Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me! Travel with SDPB to Chicago

Images of the Past: Heritage of Arms The stories behind some of the many historic guns in South Dakota’s history. Firearms have been a part of life in South Dakota since the first European explorers arrived on the Great Plains in the 1700s. Guns were an important currency between whites and Native Americans. Settlers coming to the wide-open plains of Dakota Territory depended on firearms for both food and protection. In the hands of buffalo hunters, guns nearly wiped out an entire species. Firearms have been used to commit crimes, and they’ve also been used to enforce law and order. Images of the Past: Heritage of Arms looks at many of the hundreds of historic firearms that exist in South Dakota museums and in the hands of the state’s private collectors – including a musket carried through the American Revolution by the great-grandfather of South Dakota’s first senator, R.F. Pettigrew; a rifle

carried during the Civil War by the great-great-grandfather of South Dakota’s current Senator, Mike Rounds; a hunting rifle owned by George Armstrong Custer and given to the City of Custer by his widow; rifles and pistols owned by Crazy Horse, Two Moon, and other fighters at the Little Big Horn; as well as guns left behind after the massacre at Wounded Knee. Museums and collectors also have military weapons – guns of all kinds and calibers brought back from the battlefields of Europe and the jungles of South Pacific Islands.
