SDPB is pleased to announce Melissa Hamersma Sievers has been promoted to producer in SDPB’s television department. Melissa started with SDPB 16 years ago as a college intern studying mass communications and graphic design at Sioux City’s Morningside College. Since then, she’s lent a creative hand in countless SDPB projects, including numerous Dakota Life segments, collaborating on several Aaron Siders. SDPB documentaries, and most recently, envisioning, bauer. en ho Sc l ta ys Kr designing and producing the Savor Dakota food and cooking series. Sievers will take over production of Dakota Life and continue her work producing Savor Dakota as a digital series, as well as produce on-air TV fundraising. “My love for telling stories began in high school,” says Melissa. “I enjoyed researching for speech contests. I grew up listening to NPR with my parents in the car.” Melissa looks forward to continuing to tell stories from her home state, where she lives with her farmer-husband Nick and their two children, Owen and Isaac. “I’ve enjoyed traveling around South Dakota and meeting a wide variety of folks,” says Melissa. “Dakota Life excites me because we feature a diverse group of people who are passionate about many different things. I produced a story about the state and national plowing competition being held near Beresford a couple of years ago. Pun intended!” Melis Walking in Melissa’s footsteps, former SDPB marketing intern Krystal Schoenbauer and former SDPB Radio intern Levi Gutz have been hired as videographers with SDPB-TV. Both Schoenbauer and Gutz are graduates of the University of South Dakota’s Media & Journalism program and have already been shooting video in the field for Dakota Life, Focus, and digital shorts, as well as helping to broadcast the state legislature and state high school activities. Both live in Vermillion. And we welcome new promotion producer Aaron Siders, who fills the position opened by the retirement of Emmy award-winning Dave Foote. A graduate of Iowa State University, Aaron brings 13 years of experience in television, radio and print, including KMEG/KPTH. Aaron and his wife, Kristi Dorn. z. ut G vi Le Tess, live in Sioux City. New documentary compiles the state’s WWI stories through photos, letters, diaries and intimate interviews. by Brian Gevik One hundred years ago this June, South Dakotans serving in The Great War were deployed all along the Western Front in France. Those who came to Europe in 1917 with the first wave of American troops already had some frontline experience, but few were prepared for what they would endure between May of 1918 and the signing of the Armistice in November. South Dakotans would be on the frontlines in all the major American battles of 1918: Belleau Wood, ChateauThierry, the Meuse-Argonne, and others. From the Great Plains to the Great War is the latest documentary from SDPB’s Images of the Past series. It tells the story of South Dakota’s involvement in World War One, from the broad view of the global conflict to the personal perspectives of those who served as told in letters, diaries, photos, and the recorded recollections of surviving family members. At home, South Dakotans were divided by antiGerman and anti-pacifist sentiments, but overseas South Dakotans in uniform were united in the struggle for a victory that would let them return home. South Dakotans served in all branches of the service and did all kinds of work. Some were aviators, some were artillery men and machine gunners. Others were drivers and mechanics, while others were wranglers 4

and farriers who brought a lifetime of horse-experience from their home farms and ranches. The first South Dakotan to fall in combat was a teenager who died in 1916 fighting with Canadian troops, which was before America was officially involved. The last South Dakotan died of wounds several days after the signing of the Armistice.

Hundreds of South Dakotans joined the millions who would perish from the flu during the pandemic of 1918. Some were accounted for with only the words “died overseas.” Many are buried in French graves. Others are simply missing, probably forever. Returning service members were met with parades and celebrations. One South Dakota veteran would go on to be governor. Another would become a vicious gangster. And for the first time, serious attention would have to be given to the special physical and emotional issues inflicted by mechanized, industrialized warfare. American Experience Summer of Love is a striking picture of San Francisco’s Haight Ashbury district during the summer of 1967 — from utopian beginnings, when peace and love prevailed, to the chaos, unsanitary conditions, and widespread drug use that ultimately signaled the end. Flash back to January 1967, when thousands of young people descended on Golden Gate Park for a Human Be-In. Media flocked to the event, putting hippies in the national spotlight for the first time. fertilizers, neonichotinoids from corn and soybean seed pre-coated with insecticides, and selenium, a naturally occurring soil mineral that Kerby says may be disturbed when tile drain pipes are installed, then gets carried into wetlands. Kerby’s research team found these contaminants are not only impacting tadpoles, they are decreasing quantities of frog food; specifically, the populations of aquatic insects – midges, beetles, damselflies, dobsonflies and others – eaten by adult frogs and other species. “And while I love amphibians,” says Kerby, “it should be noted ducklings, bats and other animals feed the same way as amphibians, so this is affecting entire ecosystems.” Kerby understands how tile drain systems and pre-coated seeds benefit growers. He and his students interact with farmers frequently out in the field, accessing farm ponds and conducting interviews about pesticide use. He hopes that publishing his group’s findings in scientific literature, working with groups like Ducks Unlimited and water research boards, and partnering with farming experts can lead to addressing issues like soil health to emphasize biological solutions over chemical ones. “The goal is that we can create soils with naturally occurring bacteria that can do the work farmers need and can create better soils that can infiltrate the water and do, in effect, the job of tile drains without the cost of installing and maintaining these systems, and do it in an environmentally friendly kind of way,” says Kerby.

On Nature Fabulous Frogs, airing this month on SDPB1, you’ll learn from delightfully perspicacious David Attenborough about some of the over 5,000 species of frogs and toads inhabiting Earth. A sincere frog fan, the revered British naturalist kept a European tree frog as a childhood pet and was thrilled when scientists recently named a newly discovered Peruvian rubber frog Pristimantis attenboroughi after the famed broadcaster. In South Dakota, our own crown prince of frogs may be Jake Kerby, associate professor of biology at USD and one of the state’s only amphibian experts. Kerby says he fell in love with amphibian research 20 years ago as an undergraduate in his home state of California because studying the cold-blooded vertebrates “answers interesting ecological questions” that hold wider implications. “The primary thing about amphibians is, in terms of animals with backbones, they are the most threatened class of animals on the planet,” says Kerby. “About a third are at-risk for extinction. Climate change, invasive species, contaminants, and habitat destruction are probably affecting frogs more than other animals, so they’re a good focal system.” A self-described “defender of amphibians,” Kerby leads students in research across the state to zero in on what’s harming South Dakota’s frog populations. “In places like South Dakota, massive wetland losses cause habitat loss and habitat degradation that harm local frog populations.” Kerby and his researchers recently concluded a four-year project researching the impact of agricultural tile drain systems, or subsurface drainage, on federally and stateprotected wetlands typically set aside to grow waterfowl populations for hunting. Partnering with the state’s Department of Fish and Wildlife Service, Kerby says researchers “see really high levels of contaminants in the outfalls of the tile drains getting into our wetland systems.” The contaminants include nitrates from

Another key to conserving frog populations is enlisting South Dakotans as fellow amphibian defenders. As the state’s only frog biologist, Kerby says he can’t study all the region’s 13 frog species. To recruit citizen scientists who can contribute vital herpetology data from far afield, Kerby encourages downloading the HerpMapper app onto phones to photograph and record the GPS location of our state’s frogs, salamanders, lizards, and snakes. Kerby and colleagues also maintain the Amphibians and Reptiles of South Dakota Facebook page, as well as a website, SDHerps.org. Kerby says the overall health of South Dakota frog populations are, literally, all over the map, a chief reason citizen scientists are needed. “In some places frog populations are robust,” says Kerby. “But in other places where there are high levels of contaminants, the Ranavirus is causing a higher number of die offs. Another example is, just south of USD, the cricket frogs are gone. It’s a somewhat natural location, no huge development, so what’s going on? In the Moment: Opioid Addiction in SD It’s been six months since President Trump declared deaths from opioid misuse and abuse a national emergency. Since then, the declaration has been twice extended, an opioid commission released a 138page report, and Congress passed a $3.3 billion increase in federal spending to target the opioid crisis. Many have celebrated the attention from the Trump Administration. Others have expressed frustration that it’s not nearly enough. In June, In the Moment features a series of conversations about how far we’ve come in the state regarding the opioid crisis. Are South Dakotans
seeing solutions and support from the federal government since the declaration, or are changes slow in coming? Are we moving forward with our own initiatives, legislation, and treatment options? What more could be done with an influx of resources? We’ll feature guests from all sides of the opioid crisis, including conversations with people recovering from opioid addiction. Americana or eclectic would describe our music style the best.” What can the audience listen for to hear the influence of South Dakota in “I’ll Be Your Sugar”? “Wow, great question. It’s been said that I am the voice of the prairie wind. It’s a fact that we’ve got a lot of that in SD! I’ve written two other songs that we perform that are specifically about western SD: “Home” and “Dark Green Pine Trees” from my CD These Are a Few of My Favorite Things, which was awarded “2018 CD of the Year” by the South Dakota Country Music Hall of Fame and “2017 Classic
Country Female CD of the Year” by the Rural Roots Music Commission.” Where do you most like to perform in SD and why? “We’re from the Rapid City area. We’ve performed at the Buffalo Round Up, High Country Guest Ranch, Fort Meade Veteran’s Home, Rapid City Public Library, Gaslight Restaurant, and Dahl Arts Center. SDPB Radio Debuts New Music and News Programs Beginning Sunday, June 3, SDPB Radio will broadcast Conversations from the World Cafe, which features interviews and performances with new and significant music artists while exploring trends in contemporary music and culture. Hosted by Talia Schlanger. Conversations from the World Cafe airs Saturdays at 7pm (6 MT). SDPB Radio also debuts Reveal, the weekly, one-hour investigative reporting program from The Center for Investigative Reporting (CIR) and PRX. Hosted by journalist, poet and playwright Al Letson, Reveal won a 2014 Peabody award for CIR’s original investigation into the Department of Veterans Affairs’ role in over-prescribing opioid drugs to returning Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans. The story put pressure on the VA and, as a result, the federal agency has reformed some of its most egregious prescription practices. Reveal airs Sundays at 8pm (7 MT) on SDPB Radio.

Ohiyesa: The Soul of an Indian
A Dakota father and daughter present a moving new documentary about their relative, Charles Eastman (Ohiyesa).

Although filmmaker Syd Beane (Flandreau Santee Sioux) has worked closely with well-known film industry figures like Floyd Red Crow Westerman (Sisseton-Wapheton Sioux) and Peter Coyote, when the time arrived to start telling the story of his relative, Dakota writer and physician Charles Alexander Eastman, he realized it was a history best conveyed by his daughter, Kate Beane (Flandreau Santee Sioux). “As a filmmaker, I’ve learned that all the films have to be about you, or you won’t understand them,” says Syd. “Peter Coyote wanted to be in my next film, so I put him in the treatment. In the meantime, I saw Kate on film. I saw Kate’s ability to articulate and project. I didn’t want to write. I wanted her to say what she felt. I wanted the passion of a young relative going through education, exploring herself and her future the way Charles might have in his time.” For Kate, being in front of the camera took a grand leap of faith and trust in her father’s vision. A historian and self-described “very private person,” she had originally planned to maintain an off-camera role conducting research for her father’s film. But in Ohiyesa: The 24

Soul of An Indian, the pursuit of knowledge and ways of knowing, as a filial responsibility and an honor, drives both the film and its principal figures. As we watch Kate journey from Minnesota to Dartmouth to Flandreau and back to Minnesota, attaining her doctorate as well as details from archives and elders about Eastman, we are also presented with the events and desires that shaped Eastman’s work and character. We revisit how four-year-old Eastman, known as Hakadah, is forced to flee his Dakota home in Minnesota to Canada when life is ruptured by the 1862 U.S.-Dakota War as well as by the wave of white settlers. “To the Dakota, this was an invasion,” civil rights leader and pastor Sid Byrd explains in the film. “It was an American holocaust.” Over 1,700 Dakota are forcibly marched to concentration camps along the Mississippi River. Hundreds die. Thirty-eight are hanged under order from President Abraham Lincoln. Eastman’s mother is dead and his father, Many Lightnings, is sent to military prison in Davenport, Iowa. In exile in Manitoba, Eastman’s family raises him in traditional Dakota ways until he is 15-years old. His father,

who has converted to Christianity and now goes by Jacob Eastman, sees that books are “the bows and arrows of the white man,” and brings Eastman back to his farm in Flandreau. From there, Eastman attends Nebraska’s Santee Normal Training School, then Dartmouth, and eventually obtains a medical degree from Boston University. Eastman moves to Pine Ridge and Crow Creek where he works as agency doctor for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Caring for the injured after the Wounded Knee Massacre, Eastman wrote, “It took all of my nerve to keep my composure in the face of this spectacle.” Discouraged by the massacre and the corruption at the agency, Eastman moves his family to St. Paul, then to Amherst, Massachusetts, eventually living out his days with his son, Ohiyesa II in Michigan. In addition to helping to establish Indian YMCAs and the Society of American Indians rights organization, Eastman published 11 books, including the memoirs Indian Boyhood, From the Deep Woods to Civilization: Chapters in the Autobiography of An Indian, and The Soul of the Indian, in which Eastman reflects deeply on his identity as both Indian and American. How to recount Eastman’s epic lifetime, intertwined with his granddaughter’s contemporary journey, both of which are sweeping and intimate as they unfold? For Syd, who was born and raised in the Flandreau Santee Sioux Reservation, and currently lives in Plymouth, MN,

the film started with how Syd’s family ended up in South Dakota and was guided by a quotation from Eastman’s The Soul of the Indian: “Understanding the religion of the American Indian is the most difficult thing for a non-Indian to understand.” From this quotation the film flowed. “Ohiyesa (Always a Winner) was Charles Eastman’s Dakota name and The Soul of the Indian was the best book I had read about Charles in terms of spirituality, where he pulls everything together in his life as to what his purpose was,” says Syd. “I let the film develop itself. I let Kate follow the path she was supposed to follow in a spiritual sense and looked at the parallels. I think that’s what you see in the film. There are amazing parallels.” For Kate, who was raised in Lincoln, NE, and the San Francisco Bay area, and who lived throughout the U.S. before returning to her Dakota family’s ancestral land in Minnesota, the film helps demonstrate her family’s relationship to their Mni Sota homeland. “The land connection is incredibly important, because there’s so much there that a lot of people don’t necessarily see or understand,” says Kate. “It’s through the language and through that connection with the land and understanding that historical past that we really have a better understanding of who we are as a people. That’s incredible to think about as we’re going into the future. It’s all connected.” Kate first went to Minnesota as an 18-year old when she helped a friend move. “I had a camera at the time,” says Kate. “I did a lot of walking along the river around downtown Minneapolis and I remember wondering how I just didn’t see
my people reflected in that space and wondering what our historical narrative was there.” Since that time, Kate and Syd contributed to Mni Sota Makoce: The Land of the Dakota, which won the 2012 Minnesota History Book of the Year. They and others worked diligently to change Minneapolis’s famed Lake Calhoun to Bde Maka Ska, (pronounced behDAY mah-KAH skah), meaning White Earth Lake. Kate also works as a program and outreach manager with the Minnesota Historical Society, helping to “ensure American Indian voices and perspectives people are not only included, but are a part of the process” in the Society’s 26 historic sites. Eastman’s descendants continue the legacy of creating spaces and reclaiming representation in the U.S.’s public, academic and historic institutions. “There’s definitely a need for more of our community members to be telling our own stories in order to add the complexity, to fully unpack some of the most difficult elements of our history
and tell it in a way that is complex, nuanced, and real,” says Kate. “We don’t need to be simplified anymore. That’s not reality.” Ohiyesa: The Soul of an Indian includes Kate’s grandmother Lillian Beane, grandfather John Beane, uncle William Beane, aunt Roxie Johnson, and Reverend Sid Byrd of Flandreau, and sister Carly Bad Heart Bull, as well as Oglala Lakota spiritual leader Wilmer Mesteth, author Louise Erdrich, scholar David Martínez (Pima), and physician and actor Dr. Evan Adams (Coast Salish).
