Keto Diet with Dr. Josh Axe In his familiar upbeat style, Dr. Axe puts his own fresh spin on the widely successful and wellresearched Keto Diet. Unlike many fad diets that come and go with very limited rates of long-term success, the ketogenic diet (or “keto diet”) has been practiced for more than nine decades and is based upon a solid understanding of physiology and nutrition science.

Food: What the Heck Should I Eat? #1 New York Times bestselling author Dr. Mark Hyman sorts through the conflicting research on food to give us the skinny on what to eat on Food: What the Heck Should I Eat? Did you know that eating oatmeal actually isn’t a healthy way to start the day? That milk doesn’t build bones, and eggs aren’t the devil? Even the most health conscious among us have a hard time figuring out what to eat in order to lose weight, stay fit, and improve our health. Tiny Desk Concerts Local entries to NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert Contest have steadily grown since the contest’s debut four years ago. This year, NPR received 24 entries from South Dakota. With so many great choices, we gathered a group of six SDPB Super Fans for a blind vote on our favorites. Here are the results, which strongly suggest there’s something in the water of Spearfish Creek. “The New Stuff” by Kimberly Kaye, Belle Fourche A licensed pastor and bookkeeper, Kimberly Kaye won our hearts with her plucky, toe-tapping homage to her hero roots musicians. “I bought my first guitar when I was 13 from money earned walking beans and pulling weeds in the beanfield where I grew up in Iowa,” says Kaye. “As a family, we played a lot of the old classic tunes around the kitchen table on Saturday nights where relatives would gather to sing and play.” Kaye performs at oprys and state fairs around the Midwest. “Performing in South Dakota is such a delight,” Kimberly Kaye. says Kaye. “People are so warm and welcoming. I play classic country songs with original tunes, which by default are that country twang I know and love so well. I like the raw sound, no overproduction on CD’s, just authentic country sounds. I think we’re losing that in this day and age of technical ‘fixes.’ It’s almost like if we make a mistake, technology will fix it and make us sound perfect. No one is perfect. Overproduction takes the humanity out of it.” In addition to performing and writing her own songs, Kaye hosts Kimberly Kaye Country Café on her Facebook page. “I love featuring the sounds of local/regional artists who promote, sing, play classic country music. They are great historians and supporters of the genre.”

The only live jazz radio program of its kind in the region, Jazz Nightly with Karl Gehrke is South Dakota’s source for new, classic, local and international jazz. Weeknights at 8pm (7 MT) on SDPB Radio and SDPB.org 4

“Allie Oh” by My Second Rodeo, Spearfish Although “Allie Oh” is about moving on from an ex-girlfriend, the bright, popping, party-time jam was an instant favorite among SDPB Super Fans. “It holds a special place as our first original song and seems to get a lot of great crowd feedback,” says Jason Guthmiller. By day My Second Rodeo are a beverage distributor, hotel manager, bike fixer and IT admin, but for the last year they’ve been playing regular gigs at Spearfish Creek Wine Bar and other venues. “Performing in South Dakota is great,” says Guthmiller, “There are so many people who love the arts here. Listeners are genuinely interested in our original material. The Black Hills music community is strongly united and supportive of each other. One challenge is that we’re making pretty much the same wages performing musicians were making 30 years ago – or less, ha ha.”

“Ky’s Tune” by WJazz & Friends, featuring Sophia Beatty, Spearfish Like their eclectic song, WJazz & Friends are an eclectic group. Ward Johnston has been the high school band & choir director in Sundance, Wyoming but starts a new gig teaching music at Rapid City’s South Park Elementary this fall. Flautist Rod Garnett founded Spearfish’s gamelan ensemble. Bassist Joel Adams has a day job with Roma’s Restaurant and tours with bands like Camp Comfort. Rapid Citybased singer Sophia Beatty works as a musician and waits tables. “Ky’s Tune” is their first collaboration with Beatty. Johnston says South Dakotans Sophia Beatty-vocals. have an appetite for jazz. “Most community members I talk to after concerts are blown away and want to hear more. They also want to be educated about jazz, its history, and how instrumental music is created and performed. I think performing with Sophia will be a great bridge for people just learning about jazz because a vocalist makes the music that much

more accessible.”

A new documentary on the remarkable movement to transition South Dakota’s individuals with developmental disabilities back into communities. by Katy Beem

Children (ARC). “The ‘R-word’ has almost become like the ‘N-word,’ especially for people who have these disabilities,” says Higbee. “It’s very, very offensive. Yet, as offensive as that word is now, the ARC was a powerful, leading force – a very influential organization of parents who went to their elected officials and said, ‘This is not the best that South Dakota can do. There’s got to be a better way.’” Higbee says chronicling the almost invisible movement behind the social and policy changes was born out of Breaking Shells, a 2010 documentary about two men with developmental disabilities who tour South Dakota to educate people with developmental disabilities about their rights. “We wondered how many people we could find who had moved out of institutions like Redfield, what that experience was like for them, and how they found the world on the outside,” says Higbee. He and Phillips interviewed not only former Redfield residents but also parents, family members, support professionals and politicians like former Governor Harvey Wollman. In the era before options like special education, Higbee says it can be

easy to underestimate the impact institutionalizing people had not just on those individuals, but on family members and whole communities. A sister shares the feeling of sudden loss when a sibling leaves the family home. A mother, who now lives in the same community as her son, tearfully relates the difficult decision to send her young child to Redfield. “She doesn’t come out and say it, but the situation is probably what made her marriage fail,” says Higbee. “You can imagine her being a young, single mom with no support during a lonely and helpless time. And she really did worry about just the physical safety of her son, any of us can imagine what that’s like. But she persevered and was part of the movement that brought change.” Higbee, whose family came to South Dakota when his father started Black Hills State University’s special education program in 1966, says Leaving Redfield captures South Dakotans at their best. “It’s an example of South Dakota really doing the right thing, led by its own citizens and making it a success.” Leaving Redfield premieres Monday, June 10, at 9pm (8 MT) on SDPB1.

Mark Samis of Sioux Falls vividly remembers the moment he moved out of the Redfield State Hospital and School. “The day I left Redfield, January 8, 1974,” says Samis, “That’s when I got my freedom back. I could truly feel free, like Martin Luther King said, ‘free at last, free at last, thank God almighty, free at last.’” Samis, who often cites historic moments in American history to reference his personal timeline, says he was 15 when he was institutionalized at Redfield for “intellectual disabilities” – “the day right after Kennedy made his Cuban speech.” Samis remained in Redfield throughout his young adulthood, released when he was 27 years old. Samis’ and other South Dakotans’ departure from the state hospital and school is intimately related in Leaving Redfield, a new 60-minute documentary from writer Paul Higbee and Ryan Phillips with the Technology & Innovation in Education (TIE). The film documents the state’s rather unheralded grass roots movement, led mainly by parents and families, to transition South Dakotans with intellectual or developmental disabilities out of isolated, barracksstyle institutions and back into neighborhoods and communities. Known since 1989 as the South Dakota Developmental Center, Redfield’s facility was originally established by the state legislature in 1902 as the Northern Hospital for the Insane, although it was never a hospital for individuals with mental illness. In 1913, the name was changed to the State School and Home for the Feeble-Minded. In some manner, the name changes reflect South Dakota’s evolving attempt to better determine the needs of its individuals with developmental disabilities, a movement galvanized in the 1970s and 80s by parent advocates involved with the state’s Association for Retarded

Residents at the Redfield facility present a program.

Independent Lens Rodents of Unusual Size Louisiana residents south of New Orleans have faced many an environmental threat, from oil spills to devastating hurricanes. But a growing menace now lurks in the bayous and backwaters: hordes of monstrous 20-pound swamp rats known as nutria. The voracious appetite of this invasive species from South America is accelerating erosion of the state’s coastal wetlands, already one of the largest disappearing landmasses in the world. But the people who have lived there for generations are not the type of folks to give up without a fight. SDPB2: Tuesday, June 11, 6pm (5 MT)

African Americans Many Rivers to Cross Written and presented by Professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr., this six-hour series explores the evolution of African-Americans, as well as the multiplicity of cultural institutions, political strategies, and religious and social perspectives they developed — forging their own history, culture and society against unimaginable odds. Commencing with the origins of slavery in Africa, the series moves through five centuries of remarkable historic events, including Barack Obama’s presidency.

America ReFramed Invisible Patients Through the story of Jessica Macleod, Ph.D., a dedicated nurse practitioner in Evansville, Indiana, and her four homebound and marginalized patients, The Invisible Patients sheds light on some of the most urgent healthcare issues facing our nation today: from the living conditions of the elderly poor and end-of-life care, to the soaring costs of hospitalization, complexity of insurance and over-prescription of opiates. It challenges us to wrestle with not just healthcare policy, but as importantly, asks how to care for all persons with dignity and respect.

Susie Hanson is New Host of All Things Considered SDPB Radio listeners will hear a familiar voice delivering South Dakota news during All Things Considered, as SDPB Program Director Susie Hanson steps in as local host of All Things Considered. Hanson discusses the significance of public radio and coining a new weather phrase for South Dakota winters.

Katy Beem: You jokingly refer to yourself as “an SDPB lifer.” How long have you been at SDPB and what first brought you here? Susie Hanson: “This September marks my 20th anniversary with SDPB. I was studying and working at the University of South Dakota to be an arts journalist for print. It was the start of my final semester and I heard the Arts Advocate position was open here in Radio. I didn’t have any radio experience, but I had been listening to public radio off and on for several years. The job had already been filled, but I was hired as a student part-timer in the newsroom. I had never been on the radio and on my first day I had to read the noon news!” 18

Learn. Dream. Grow.

KB: What are you most looking forward to in hosting ATC? SH: “Engaging listeners on-air EVERY DAY. That’s the one thing I haven’t done in my 20 years here – host on-air Every. Single. Day.” KB: What are some of the challenges associated with hosting live radio that folks may not be aware of? SH: “Consistency in your energy level and thus your delivery. And slower news days are actually tougher than the busy news days. And, physically, my arms are too short to be able to sit, run the board, talk on the mic, and play stories all at the same time, so I host standing up! I rigged up my own little temporary workaround, but we’re working on a more permanent set-up.” KB: When we’ve done fundraising together, you’re always very articulate about the important role public radio plays in South Dakota. I first gave to SDPB because I was listening to you on-air! Talk about that. SH: “Thank you! I didn’t know that! I firmly believe a democracy

cannot function without an informed society. Public media is the leastbiased news source on the media landscape, and, it also happens to be accessible to everyone. Its mission is to serve the public interest because the public supports it! Specifically in South Dakota, public media connects me to the rest of the world and I learn SO MUCH. I know we’re not as isolated as we used to be in this part of the country thanks to technology, but the ability of a good radio story to transport you anywhere through your ears and your brain is priceless.” KB: What have been your favorite SDPB moments? SH: “Hm, that’s a tough one. Probably anytime I got to be on the radio with [former Morning Classics host] Owen DeJong. And there was that time I said ‘flurbies’ instead of ‘flurries’ during a forecast.” All Things Considered airs weekdays at 3pm (2pm MT) and weekends at 4pm (3pm MT) on SDPB Radio and on SDPB.org.

“See Your Face” by Back Alley, Sioux Falls & Rapid City “See Your Face” stood out to SDPB Super Fans as the only local Tiny Desk entry to contain a round. “Dustin wanted us to have a round part in a song since we started writing together and he finally tricked the guys into trying it,” say Ethan and Ryne. “It happened to actually sound good and we think that makes it stick out a bit, especially from the rest of our originals.” The folk-pop group originated seven years ago as a cover band at Augustana University. The members enjoy the great beer, good food, and relaxed environments of South Dakota’s live music venues and say the state influences their songwriting. “As people who have grown up and continue to have lives here, most of our songs are about people of South Dakota. Whether it’s about breakups and exes, friends struggling with anxiety and depression, missed opportunities or love songs for our significant others – they’re all South Dakota people that have impacted us in huge ways.”

“Freight Train” by Six Mile Road, Spearfish Comprised of a timber sales administrator, community support provider, businessmen and a middle school music teacher, the bluegrass Americana group Six Mile Road played their first gig in 1998 at Spearfish’s Knights Cellar. Although members have come and gone, the current configuration has been the longest in the group’s history. With day jobs and families, the band mostly gigs around the Black Hills. “Playing in SD is great and the Black Hills music scene seems to be having somewhat of renaissance,” says Dan Cross. “There’s more music now than what I remember 20 years ago.” Although “Freight Train” has a tight and lively bluegrass vibe, Cross says, “I’ve always had a hard time describing our sound. We’re not straight up bluegrass but can be at times. We’re also a little Progressive and Americana, but not always. I guess we’ve always been more concerned with whether or not the music sounds good.” The group is releasing their first album of originals soon. Jake Jackson-guitar & vocals, Mike Brennan-bass, Trappor Masson-banjo, Dan Cross-mandolin & vocals, Ben Lemay-fiddle

Several years back, when visiting folk musicians from Denmark attended a small music festival in Minnesota, they were awed by an older musician from Moorhead, Iowa. Dwight Lamb’s fiddle and button accordion music was distinctively and authentically Danish, but unknown even in their native Denmark. Lamb, who inherited the Danish music from his father and grandfather, has toured throughout Europe and America, mentoring generations of national and international musicians in the style that was once thought lost to time. Lamb performs live Thursday, June 13, at 4pm at SDPB’s Sioux Falls Studios. Featuring Danish musicians Kristian Bugge, Mette Jensen Stoeck, and Morten Alfred Hoirup, with Scandinavian dancers. Sponsored by the Canton Center for Arts, Culture and Education. Tickets available at the door. The performance will also be webcast live at SDPB.org 24
