In the Moment’s Brown Bag Book Club

Join Lori Walsh live in the SDPB Sioux Falls Studios Mondays at noon (11 MT) throughout the summer for book discussions and author conversations. Monday, June 10: Lee Ann Roripaugh & Christine Stewart The outgoing and incoming South Dakota Poet Laureates discuss the role and revival of poetry in the state. Roripaugh’s most recent poetry collection is Tsunami v. the Fukushima 50. Stewart’s poetry collections are Bluewords Greening and Untrussed.

Monday, June 17: Kent Nerburn Nerburn is the author of Neither Wolf Nor Dog, the 2019 South Dakota One Book selection. Nerburn’s 2018 book, Dancing with the Gods: Reflections on Life and Art, encourages artists to withstand doubts and obstacles to gain fulfillment in pursuing the artistic life. Monday, June 24: Patrick Hicks The poet and Augustana University writing professor’s new book is Library of the Mind: New & Selected Poems.

In the Moment’s Brown Bag Book Club is free and open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to bring their books and questions for the authors to SDPB’s Sioux Falls Studios, 601 N. Phillips Ave. Conversations are broadcast live on In the Moment on SDPB Radio and on SDPB.org.

SDPB’s Summer with the Symphony SDPB’s Summer with the Symphony returns to bring you highlights from the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra, the Black Hills Symphony Orchestra, and other orchestral delights. The series offers uninterrupted recordings of live performances, insights into the music’s history, and discoveries about the artists who create and perform it. Monday, June 3 Antonin Dvořák – Suite Op. 98b A Major “American Suite” From the SDSO’s Music Unwound: American Roots concert, this suite includes Maestro Delta David Gier’s introduction and a banjo piece. Lakota Music Project Young Composers Academy Concert – Callista Baker, Maya Baca, Baylie Her Many Horses, Arieanna Steele Three pieces composed by indigenous high school composers from South Dakota. Performed by the SDSO and featuring introductions with internationally recognized composer Ted Wiprud and the students.

Monday, June 17 Theodore Wiprude – Wind of Many Voices Based on Wiprude’s travels throughout South Dakota, the SDSO premiered the original composition Wind of Many Voices in March 2019. Wiprud is the 2018-2019 Music Alive Composer-in-Residence for the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra. Monday, June 24 Antonin Dvořák – Cello Concerto in B minor, B. 191 (Op. 104), Final Movement Performed by the Black Hills Symphony Orchestra, featuring Boston Pops cellist William Rounds, who is originally from Rapid City.
