Literature’s most famous race against the calendar comes to Masterpiece with an innovative new adaptation of Jules Verne’s classic novel Around The World In Eighty Days.

Learn. Dream. Grow.

“Fogg and Passepartout are as central to our show as they are in the novel, but we have embellished their backstories. … And in the spirit of modernization, we have transported the character of Fix from a fairly simple male antagonist into a pioneering female journalist who accompanies them on the trip.” A mustachioed Tennant (Doctor Who, Broadchurch, Good Omens) Photo: PBS

D

avid Tennant stars as Phileas Fogg, the Englishman who bets a fortune that he can circumnavigate the planet in a mere eighty days—quite a feat, considering that it’s 1872. Ibrahim Koma and Leonie Benesch costar as his intrepid traveling companions on an expedition that packs far more adventure than the trio bargained for. In Verne’s story, published in the late 19th century, wealthy Victorian eccentric Phileas Fogg wagers he can circumnavigate the world in 80 days. Fogg is accompanied on the daunting journey by his quickthinking valet, Passepartout. Along the way, the two are thwarted by a Scotland Yard detective named Fix, who believes Fogg has robbed the Bank of England. With the 1869 completion of both America’s transcontinental railroad and the Suez Canal, Verne’s tale is just conceivable. “The novel was fascinating because it came at a point when advances in the world meant you could actually get around the world for the first time ever by buying a ticket rather than having to be an explorer,” executive producer Simon Crawford Collins told Drama Quarterly. “Jules Verne had this wonderful idea of a man who was really not designed for traveling to take on this challenge. The narrative of the story comes from the fact Phileas Fogg knows he’s the least appropriate person to do this task and that he hasn’t got a hope, so you’re really willing this man to achieve the thing.” The miniseries tells the story in eight, thrilling episodes. “Our adaptation and Jules Verne’s novel have the same themes at their core: traveling the globe, pioneering adventure and a celebration of technology” Crawford Collins told MASTERPIECE.

David Tennant’s return to Masterpiece is a welcome one: He served as a series host in 2009.

who leads this cast as the affluent and not necessarily intrepid Phileas Fogg. Creator, writer, and executive producer Ashley Pharoah described Fogg to Deadline as “a preposterously upper middle class, over-educated Englishman … [with] a childlike sense of wonder because he’s never traveled, he’s never left London or his club.” Actors Ibrahim Koma (As Far As I Can Walk) and Leonie Benesch (Howards End, The Crown) play Fogg’s traveling companions— French valet Jean Passepartout

and fledgling journalist Abigail “Fix” Fortescue, respectively. Passepartout is a foil to Fogg’s character; he is a man who has lived a gritty, welltraveled life. (“Passe-partout” is French for “pass everywhere”.) Ms. “Fix” is determined to professionally prosper in a man’s world and emerge from the shadow of her newspaper magnate father. Filming across several countries during a worldwide pandemic was a challenge. After shooting just the first episode in early 2020, cast and crew were forced to take almost a year-long hiatus. In the end, the shoot was spread across studios and onsite locations in South Africa and Romania over a five-month period—four episodes filmed in each country. The miniseries airing on Masterpiece is the latest in a long line of works adapting Around The World In Eighty Days. A musical with songs by The Kink’s Ray Davies was inspired by Verne’s novel, along with radio dramas, stage plays, documentaries, video games and even a Three Stooges film! The current show is one the creators hope will bring families together to watch. “This is a period road trip,” Crawford Collins explained. “You don’t see so many shows with the promise of a family adventure—how do you keep it smart, family-friendly and fun at the same time? …[We] wanted to make sure the tone was right from beginning to end. The fact that it was Jules Verne didn’t make it easier—because it’s so iconic. [We] wanted it to be true to the spirit of the novel.” Around The World In Eighty Days airs Sundays on SDPB-TV and concludes in February. Greetings from Custer

Burning Beetle Each year the community of Custer constructs a giant beetle that is burned at the annual Burning Beetle, a festival that brings people together around the idea of defending the black hills forest against the mountain pine beetle. This annual event continues to bring the Custer community together even after the pine beetle numbers have declined.

breeze coming from a hole in the ground. Native Americans had known about the cave for a long time before European settlers arrived. Some tribes considered the site sacred. Wind Cave is world-famous for a calcite cave formation called boxwork and combined with the history and culture of the national park make for an exciting time in the Black Hills.

Wind Cave In 1881, Jesse and Tom Bingham became the first white people known to have located a natural entrance to the cave. The brothers were pursuing a wounded deer when they heard a whistling noise and felt a stiff

Fine Dining Destination In the past few years, Custer has become a destination for foodies looking for fine dining in the Black Hills. From top-rated hamburgers and fries to chef-inspired menus with unique culinary offerings you might not expect to find in

a small tourist town – or even in the Upper Midwest! There's a Custer restaurant for any taste and budget. We’ll talk with the owners of one of Custer’s most talkedabout and unique restaurants and find out what they do to make the experience of fine dining is as memorable as the food itself. Big Rock Park Big Rock Park in Custer once operated an aerial tramway that carried tourists to the top of the Big Rock. When the tramway went defunct, the park was, for a time, largely forgotten. In recent years, Custer locals put their park back on the map with the Custer Skywalk -- a trail system and staircase to an observation deck on top of the rock. SDPB takes a look at the past and present of Big Rock Park.

The settlement of Custer predates settlers of European descent, and after the discovery of gold it became a bustling community that continues today. Dakota Life visits Custer and environs in February.

The majority are mothers. Three unforgettable formerly incarcerated mothers, jailed for drug-related charges, fight to overcome alienation—and a society that labels them “felons”—to readjust to life with their families. GRAMMY Award-winning artist Irma Thomas is featured in Irma: My Life in Music. Although Irma Thomas didn’t experience the same kind of commercial success as her contemporaries, Aretha Franklin and Gladys Knight, her impact on R&B music is just as great. So much so that she is referred to as the “Soul Queen of New Orleans.” The program features archival concert and interview footage culled from decades of performances filmed at The New Orleans Jazz Heritage Festival. PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

Photo: America ReFramed

The Falconer is a story of second chances: for injured birds of prey, for an abandoned plot of land, for a group of teenagers who have dropped out of high school, and for Maryland resident, Rodney Stotts. Dotted with abandoned buildings and towering trees, a former juvenile prison complex is full of potential as far as Stotts is concerned. One of only a handful of African American falconers in the country, Stotts envisions a refuge for the animals he loves and transformative opportunities for his stressed community in the Washington, D.C. metro area. SDPB2: Tuesday, February 15, 7 & 11pm (6 & 10 MT) Saturday, February 19, 9pm (8 MT)

American Experience Freedom Riders follows the courageous collective of African American and white civil rights activists who in 1961 rode together on buses throughout the American South to challenge segregation. These video segments document the events and accomplishments of the Freedom Riders and introduce

Through the stories of a retired New York City cop, an eccentric Orange County realtor, and an aspiring real estate developer in Baltimore, Owned: A Tale of Two Americas from Independent Lens explores the promise of US housing policies, the systematic oppression in many of America’s “chocolate cities,” and the communities that these systems have created. The film suggests that ultimately, these communities have more in common than they might expect. SDPB2: Wednesday, February 9, 6:30 & 11:30pm (5:30 & 10:30 MT)

Greta Thunberg A Year to Change the World follows Greta Thunberg as she steps from behind the podium and onto the front lines. Over the course of the three episodes, Greta explores the science as she travels to extraordinary locations across the globe, meeting leading climate scientists, witnessing first-hand the consequences of climate change, and confronting the complexity of what is required to make change happen. Art for Everyone Making art that creates a sense of community is a goal of Spearfish-based artist Dale Lamphere “Both of these works presented formidable challenges to Dale and his team,” said Iverson. “For example, Community Tapestry had to be installed in a narrow area located over a tall staircase, quite a feat considering the height of the finished piece. And in the case of The Hive, the entire piece is constructed of very heavy, very solid stainless steel, not only do these guys have to form it into a flowing structure, they also have to lift it with a crane, and haul it down the interstate without damaging it.” Through careful planning, determination, and plain old hard work, Dale and his team succeeded in creating these pieces that everyone can enjoy. Considering the pandemic and challenges faced, Iverson said “That Dale – led by a suggestion from his wife, Jane – decided to include community artists into his piece for Monument Health is very telling of the man he is. Not only is he a master craftsman and incredibly accomplished artist, but he’s also a humble South Dakotan who’s willing to share the spotlight with others.” Lamphere Studios premieres on SDPB1-TV Thursday, February 17 at 8pm Central, 7 Mountain.

Dale Lamphere is a name known far and wide, from statues representing the virtues of the people of South Dakota in the rotunda of the state capitol, to Dignity standing on a hilltop at Chamberlain, to an Arc of Dreams spanning the Big Sioux in Sioux Falls. In 2021 Dale was busy with two installations. One features work from other artists and adorns the atrium at Monument Health. The other represents school spirit on the campus of Black Hills State University in Spearfish. Local filmmaker Randal Iverson followed Dale Lamphere through the process to create these unique pieces. In Lamphere Studios Community Tapestry and The Hive Randal takes us behind the scenes to see the creative process in action.

Road Worthy While scouting and shooting sites in America’s prime fossil country for the 3-part PBS series Prehistoric Road Trip, Emily Graslie and her documentary crew withstood many quintessential rites of passage proffered by a South Dakota road trip. But Graslie is incredulous that, in nine weeks of filming at over 40 locations throughout five states, including South Dakota, the crew endured no weather calamities. Noodling out the logistics of filming, Graslie had prepped her non-South Dakota crew for Mother Earth’s best and worst. “You’re filming in the most climatically unpredictable part of the country,” says Graslie. “You’re talking about freak rainstorms, hailstorms – record-breaking hail! Huge thunder cells. Just the previous year, a tornado picked up a five-ton tractor near Buffalo and dropped it five miles away! I am still shocked we didn’t have a single rain day! We didn’t have to cancel anything.” Born and raised in Rapid City, Graslie was Chief Curiosity Correspondent at The Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. She spent much of her childhood on her father’s ranch near Faith. Sue, the largest and best-preserved T-Rex who was also wooed to Chicago by The Field Museum, was discovered in 1990 just outside Faith. “My great grandparents homesteaded there,” says Graslie. “I’m not much of a farm girl, but I care a lot about the history of the area, and the ranch has been special to me.” Before she became a science communicator, Graslie practiced landscape painting with her high

school art teacher Jeff Gulbransen. At Missoula, she got her BFA in fine art painting. Her senior thesis was an 8x14-foot mural of a massive thunder cell storm moving in over the prairie, playfully titled “20 Miles East of Faith.” Graslie serves as host, writer, executive producer, and has worked very closely editing with co-producer Ally Gimbel. The series visited Montana, North Dakota, Nebraska, and Illinois, in addition to South Dakota. “Everywhere we went, we tried to show and celebrate that there’s so much more to this part of the country,” said Gralie. “I think South Dakotans will hopefully feel a sense of pride in their state and

their legacy. And I hope it teaches more people in the state about the land that they’re walking on.” Join Emily Graslie for a road trip through America’s dinosaur country on a search for mysterious creatures and bizarre ecosystems that have shaped Earth. New Morning Edition Host In February, Leila Fadel becomes NPR’s newest host for Morning Edition. She joins Steve Inskeep, Rachel Martin, and A Martinez in the Morning Edition hosting lineup alongside local host Stel Kline. Leila is currently a national correspondent for NPR based in Los Angeles, covering race and identity. Her reporting included the grief and anger over the killing of George Floyd, policing and race, on American Muslim communities, and on the jarring inequities the coronavirus laid bare in the healthcare system. Previously, Leila was NPR’s international correspondent based in Cairo, from where she covered the wave of revolts

in the Middle East and their aftermath in Libya, Tunisia, Egypt, and beyond. “This work is about telling stories that reflect our nation and the world as it is, to have conversations that illuminate and that hold our public officials to account,” Fadel said. “No place does this work better than NPR. I’m excited to take my years of field reporting, at home and abroad, to the host chair and work with a team I’ve long admired.”

BLACK HISTORY MONTH PROGRAMMING ON SDPB

Photo: Everett Collection, Inc.

“Despite all the trials and tribulations that Black people have had to suffer, the church has survived, it’s grown, it’s morphed, it’s transformed, and we’re still here,” says Henry Louis Gates, Jr. The Black Church: This Is Our Story, This Is Our Song explores the 400-year-old story of the black church in America, the changing nature of worship spaces, and the men and women who shepherded them from the pulpit, the choir loft, and church pews. SDPB1: Sunday, February 6 and Sunday, February 13, 2pm (1 MT)

American Masters Marian Anderson: The Whole World in Her Hands explores the life, career, and legacy of the singer of classical music and spirituals. Best known for her performance at the legendary Freedom Concert on April 9, 1939, Anderson, in a bold protest against racial intolerance, sang before a diverse crowd on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. In that moment, Anderson — despite being a fiercely private person — transformed into a symbol for the nascent civil rights movement, even inspiring a 10-year-old Martin Luther King, Jr., who listened on the radio. SDPB1: Tuesday, February 8, 8pm (7 MT) SDPB2: Saturday, February 12, 7 & 11pm (6 & 10 MT)

Fannie Lou Hamer’s America: An America ReFramed Special “I’m sick and tired of being sick and tired.” Most Americans have heard that famous line, but few know who said it. Mississippi sharecropper-turned-civil-rights-activist, Fannie Lou Hamer, known in the 1960s and 70s for her powerful speeches, soul-stirring songs, and impassioned pleas for equal rights, has largely been forgotten. But in this film, the person who Malcom X called the “country’s number one freedom fighting woman” tells her own story – in her own words – by means of archival audio footage and rarely seen television appearances recorded throughout her political and humanitarian career. SDPB1: Tuesday, February 22, 8pm (7 MT) SDPB2: Thursday, February 24, 7pm & midnight (6 & 11 MT) and Saturday, February 26, 9pm (8 MT)
