by Katy Beem In 1974, twentytwo years before the Women’s National Basketball Association was established and 18 years before the Summit League (then the MidContinent Conference) admitted women, girls basketball was officially introduced as a competitive team sport in South Dakota high schools. Dawn Seiler, née Shaeffer, was a freshman at McLaughlin High School the year girls hoops officially started in the state. McLaughlin, population 700, is situated on U. S. Highway 12, on Standing Rock Reservation, near the North Dakota border. Seiler, tall – and strong from working at her parents’ ranch 20 miles north of town – was recruited for tryouts by then new coach Jim Calhoon. Calhoon went on to a noteworthy career coaching at White River and Winner, among other places. Seiler made the team and played post for the McLaughlin Mustangs, who made the state tournament three times under Calhoon’s tutelage. “Before basketball, we didn’t even have gym or PE. We had a swimming pool and that was your PE,” laughs Seiler. “Jim came to town and organized boys’ and girls’ basketball. He influenced me because he was very passionate about the game, and he passed Dawn Seiler (shooter) playing that passion on to his players.” for McLaughlin High School, After graduation, Seiler moved 1976. further northward to Bismarck, playing forward at the University of Mary while getting her degree in secondary education and coaching. Her first job after college returned her to Corson County, this time to McIntosh, just 30 miles shy of McLaughlin, where she coached Tigers Girls Basketball for 15 seasons and seven state tournaments. Seiler is currently in her twentieth year at Aberdeen Central, where she is both girls basketball coach and assistant high school principal. Under Seiler, the Golden Eagles have reached 17 state tournaments, including their 75-64 win over Sioux Falls O’Gorman in 2016, a season the Golden Eagles ended 24-1. Seiler recognizes her career parallels the arc of girls basketball in South Dakota. “I like to say I grew up with South Dakota basketball,” says Seiler. “We’ve had the same timeline. It’s been kind of cool, because it all happened for me at the right time. I’ve been very fortunate.” Seiler says South Dakota’s girls basketball program has expanded in part due to the acknowledgement that girls are full-fledged athletes. “The game has grown tremendously,” says Seiler. Weight training, multiple sports, and mindsets have evolved

since early days. “These girls think, ‘I’m an athlete. Not just a girl athlete. I’m an athlete.’ And we treat them as athletes.” Paiton Burckhard, a 5’11’ senior forward for Aberdeen, is one such athlete. The product of parents Kevin Burckhard and Chris (Swanhorst) Burckhard, two former Northern State players, Burckhard will play for South Dakota State University this fall. Both she and Coach Seiler acknowledge that Burckhard’s desire to win propels her aggressive point-scoring. “I like to play fast, but at the same time I’m really controlled,” says Burckhard. “I like to distribute the ball, but I also like to score.” Seiler upholds Burckhard’s evaluation of her dualistic tendencies. “Paiton has great balance in her life. She is competitive, driven, and she obviously has great athleticism. But she’s got that mental makeup that she wants to compete. She is willing to work. Not just on the court but in the classroom. That’s just her personality.” Likewise, Burckhard appreciates Seiler both in and away from the game. “She’s a coach you can connect with on and off the court. If you’re having problems in school, out of school, she’s a really great person who cares for you, which makes it real easy to play for her because we respect her and she respects us. She’s a really great person and I just love her to death.” Seiler is vigilant for strains of selfdefeating perfectionism in her players. “I think when Paiton was younger, she could be a little too tough on herself, but now she’s not the kid who’s going to dwell on the mistakes. She’s always thinking ahead.” Seiler reinvokes the necessity of balance. “We talk about this with all our players all the time. If you’re playing hard, you’re going to make mistakes. And if you’re playing hard, you’re going to be able to make up for a lot of mistakes. Point them out, make adjustments, and think about the next play.” Burckhard admits taking constructive criticism has been part of the process of transitioning into a Summit League-level player. “Sometimes we’ll have a conflict or whatever, just because I am so competitive and I don’t like being wrong. But we’ll have a conversation

and I’ll work to take it easily. When I change it, it ends up working. She’s always right about everything,” laughs Burckhard. Seiler’s longevity and methodology have made her the winningest female girls basketball coach in South Dakota history and, as of this writing, the second-winningest girls coach in the state, closing in on Parkston’s retired Rob Van Laecken’s 593 career wins. Seiler demurs the plaudits. “Quite honestly, I do not keep track of that stuff,” says Seiler. “I’m worried about Friday’s game. I’m a really competitive person, so for me, it’s always about the next one. We just want to put our kids in the best possible position to be successful and it’s my job to do that.” Recently, Seiler made national headlines after being selected to coach the eastern team for the McDonald’s All-American Girls’ Games in Atlanta on March 28. “Again, that’s not a ‘me’ thing,” says Seiler. “That’s the (continued on page 12)

Wilma Mankiller overcame rampant sexism and personal challenges to emerge as the Cherokee Nation’s first woman Principal Chief in 1985. The new documentary Mankiller examines the legacy of the formidable Wilma Mankiller and reunites the documentary team of Gale Anne Hurd and Valerie RedHorse Mohl for their third and most powerful film. As a child, Mankiller’s family was relocated from Oklahoma to San Francisco. In the Bay Area during the turbulent 1960s, Mankiller became involved in the fight for civil rights and joined the Alcatraz Occupation. Savor Dakota Dinner (Supper?) Is Served!

Whether your evening meal is dinner or supper, most likely it’s centered around an entrée. This month Savor Dakota, SDPB’s locavore guide to South Dakota cuisine and food producers, tucks in to main courses. We track bison steak from grassland to table and sample fatayers, savory Middle Eastern pocket pastries, at Sanaa’s 8th Street Gourmet. With only 60,000 bison processed per year in the United States, chances are your bison steak is homegrown. Chef MJ Adams introduces us to rancher Margaret “Mimi” Hillenbrand, whose family has owned the 777 Ranch since the early 1970s. A certified, 100% grass-fed operation, the 777 holds 2,000 head of bison on 28,000 acres south of Hermosa. “We’ve practiced holistic management for 30 years – building topsoil, sequestering tons of carbon, and by the way we time the animals coming in and grazing, we’re slowly getting rid of the monoculture nonnative species and bringing more of the native species in, and bringing back diversity,” says Hillenbrand. Next, Savor Dakota follows the processing and packing phase of bison production at Western Buffalo Company in Rapid City. Bruce Anderson and his crew dress bison

from 777 Ranch, as well as from Custer State Park and ranches and tribes throughout the region. “I don’t know that you can get more than 40 miles away from a buffalo ranch in South Dakota,” says Anderson. “We try to work with all of them, big and little. It’s a tricky balance. Between processing, grass, market share. Those of us who’ve been doing it for 25 years, we understand that.” Then meet Ben Klinkel, chef and owner of Delmonico Grill, Tally’s Silver Spoon and Klinkeltown Grilled Cheese & Burger Joint in Rapid City, who serves a variety of bison burgers and cuts at his three restaurants. “The hanger steak has been going strong for Tally’s and for Delmonico for quite some time, and it’s just a unique cut of meat that you wouldn’t find in the

store,” says Klinkel. “It’s a butcher’s cut, and we try and serve butcher’s cuts because they’re economical, and because people aren’t used to seeing it.” And we showcase Sanaa Abourezk at her eponymous Middle Eastern eatery in Sioux Falls. A native of Syria and gourmet chef, Sanaa shares fatayer pocket pastries, made with meat or vegetables and ingredients like sweet potatoes, pomegranate molasses, almonds, and tahini sauce. Last, MJ and Sanaa cook up empanadas with ground buffalo meat filling and topped with a zesty chimichurri sauce. Dakota Life: Winter Fun This month, Dakota Life features the ways people in South Dakota embrace the season’s ice and snow.

“Obviously, you’d want to be close to water and a source of wood, so you’ve got really good variety of games for the wintertime.” Marshall holds a fine arts degree from Sinte Gleska University. He also makes and scrimshaws knives, daggers, and jewelry, in addition to painting. He began crafting his own game pieces in 2004 after conserving the turn-of-thecentury heirlooms at Buechel Museum. “I’d like to say I had this grand idea of preserving the culture, but really, I loved the artifacts,” says Marshall. “The sad part about the games nowadays is a lot of our folks don’t know about them. Really, I wouldn’t have known either if I hadn’t worked at the museum and researched that material.” Marshall’s personal hiking and fishing ventures often include materials scavenging. “It’s almost like a treasure hunt for me,” says Marshall. “Even though they’re just bones, hides, sticks, you have to know what you’re looking for.” Today Marshall and his son Joseph Marshall teach the games using Marshall’s hand-crafted equipment at events throughout the state, including the Lakota Games on Ice at Lake

Adams Nature Preserve South Dakota’s 60 state parks and recreation areas include 349 miles of trails. In winter, ten miles at the Adams Nature Preserve in North Sioux City, SD, are groomed for cross country skiing. Dakota Life hits the trails for some classic and skate skiing in southeast South Dakota.

Tuesday Trekkers Meet the Tuesday Trekkers, a group of friends who’ve committed themselves to meeting outdoors oncea-week for friendship, nature and exercise. We meet up to snowshoe with the group at Good Earth State Park southeast of Sioux Falls.

Lakota Woskate/Lakota Games When artist Mike Marshall was digitizing the Lakota Woskate (Lakota Games) virtual exhibit at the Buechel Memorial Lakota Museum in St. Francis, he spent hours photographing and documenting spinning wood tops, whirling bones and stone balls. A park ranger for 22 years with the Rosebud Sioux Tribe and an avid fisherman, Marshall brought his outdoors expertise to the museum job and everything came together. “Being an artist, I just loved the idea of what the game pieces were made of,” says Marshall. “And with my natural resources background, I’m looking at the buffalo ribs, the buffalo horns, and it just really sparked an interest in me.” Traditional Lakota games were played for competition and leisure by both adults and children. Some, like paslohanpi (javelins) or caslohe iconpi (bowls) were traditionally played by women, while others like haka unpi (elk game), were played by men to practice hunting skills. The games demand excellent hand-eye coordination, like tasiha unpi (deer bone game), in which the player tries to catch a string of five deer toes on a thin pin. Winter games like paslohanpi (javelins) involve sliding buffalo horntipped wooden sticks across the ice at a target. “In the old days they’d spend a lot of time in one area,” says Marshall.
