Fill in the blank: Comedian Paula Poundstone has been a panelist on Wait…Wait, Don’t Tell Me, the NPR news quiz show, for how many years? “I think I’ve been there like 13 or 15 years now,” guesses Poundstone. “Good thing it’s not a question in the Lightning Round,” she laughs, referring to one of her favorite segments on Wait, Wait. The Emmy-award winner will perform Friday, October 16, in Sioux Falls at the Washington Pavilion. Poundstone is chagrined that she can’t recall if she’s visited South Dakota before. “I think I’ve been in South Dakota, but I couldn’t swear to it,” she says. “Maybe it’s North Dakota I haven’t been in. When did you guys break away?” Regardless, Poundstone looks forward to a fall visit, radiating her signature inquisitiveness when she learns about chislic and corn mazes. “I would love to do a corn maze!” she says. “Do you get bugs on you? I do worry about that a little bit.” Known for her crowd interaction during her standup shows, Poundstone says she appreciates the energy of recording Wait…Wait in front of a live audience. “I don’t prepare jokes in any way,” says Poundstone. “I try to remain abreast of the news to be a half-way decent citizen that can cast at least a nondestructive vote. In terms of knowing

enough to do Wait, Wait…Don’t Tell Me, it’s not so much the news of what actually happened that’s important. The stuff that trips you up on Wait, Wait is the news of the weird. If you don’t know who tried to sneak ferrets down their pants in the airport you’re probably going to lose. That’s a big issue on Wait, Wait. They keep a close eye on that.” Known also for her incredulity of research studies cited on Wait, Wait, Poundstone says she’s a firm believer in research, as long as it is applicable. “I sometimes ask, ‘Who’s behind this study? And why did they do it?’” says Poundstone. “Peter [Sagal] had one that said ‘cats are the only animals that don’t forgive.’ There are thousands of species on the planet and who’s talked to all of them? I need to learn how to stave off Alzheimer’s. I don’t care if a cat forgives me or not.” Is Poundstone a fan of public radio? “I started listening to Prairie Home Companion and that probably roped me into public radio because I loved that,” she says. “They are my go-to source for news. It’s very hard to trust anyone else at all because there’s such an agenda for so many news sources or just lack of professionalism and training. I sometimes put CNN on to write jokes, but almost never for facts. Whereas — gee, I could be wrong but I don’t think I’m wrong — I trust public radio to tell me news things, as I do public television. I love the

NewsHour.” As a performer who tours extensively in theatres and comedy clubs throughout the country, Poundstone says she doesn’t think audiences can be typified by region. “The thing that people that come to see me might have in common is they think they will enjoy an evening of comedy with me,” she says. “So that already sort of slants who the crowd is a little bit. And then we’re all exposed to the same media. You know, there are accents and the like, but there’s not like a regional behavior, I think, to the degree people think there is.” Poundstone adds, “I will say, the chislic may put you over the edge on that. That may make you outliers in that area. The chislic and the corn maze season.”

What goes into the making of a news day at SDPB? That story plays out every day, in infinite and unpredictable ways. The beeping of alarm clocks often starts our reporters’ days, though occasionally the day has merged with the previous night, or the news wouldn’t wait for the morning wake-up. Any given news day can send a reporter hurtling along I-90 halfway across the state, trekking the Badlands or Black Hills, sifting through reams of data at a desk, or racking the brain for the perfect question at a press conference. A news day can encompass a wide range of stories, requiring a knack for quick-on-the-feet shifts in pacing or tone. It can demand singular, unwavering attention combined with breakneck speed or require a patient, Zen-like embrace of the mundane. Some days remind the reporter why she does what she does, while others might make him question his life choices. Some end with the satisfaction of seeing a long soughtafter story come to fruition. Some 4

begin with a tragedy. “Some days I get to try amazing new things,” says SDPB News Reporter Kealey Bultena. “I’ve flown a small plane, talked with national leaders, covered horrible crimes and incredible celebrations. Other days are less eventful.” SDPB Magazine has taken a single August day to focus in on our individual reporters’ routines and spontaneous undertakings to see the outlines of the bigger picture of a statewide news crew in action — choreographed in real time by the events, planned and unpredicted, that affect South Dakotans, the nation and the world. We chose the day randomly with no way of knowing what it would throw our way. Wednesday, August 26, 2015 SDPB Radio Morning Edition host Gary Ellenbolt is up at 3:45am before driving into the studio for his morning ritual: checking for stories filed overnight and looking for any weather situations worth a closer look before turning on the mic. At the sound of her 5:40am alarm,

Wek.

News Director Cara Hetland starts her news day browsing emails for breaking stories and checking in with Gary to make sure all is well on-air. She meets up with her neighbor for their daily two-mile walk, shuttles her kids to school, then carpools to Vermillion. This morning, the story dominating the national news is the horrific oncamera murder of journalists Alison Parker and Adam Ward in Roanoke, Virginia. The mood is heavy in the Vermillion newsroom, as it is in newsrooms around the nation. “Suddenly, everything I’ve been doing today has had a dusting of somberness,” says Gary. “Being human, I grieve for the families. Being a veteran journalist, nothing I’m doing today seems nearly as important, now that two people in my line of work, people I’ve never heard of until this morning, are gone.” As the nation absorbs another shock, the day goes on, in newsrooms as everywhere else. Fortunately perhaps, the work doesn’t stop. Cara assigns stories to Sioux Fallsbased reporters Kealey Bultena and

Erin Mairose, and checks in with the Rapid City office to see what Black Hills reporter Charles Michael Ray and intern Chynna Lockett have lined up. SDPB Online’s Nate Wek is already on the way to Adee Honey Farms in Bruce, S.D. to interview owner Richard Adee about the health of honey bees. At 9am, Gary turns the airwaves over to Owen DeJong and Morning Classics. Gary puts the final touches on a story about the uncertain fate of nine-man football at small town South Dakota schools like Freeman. Varsity football won’t be played in Freeman, once a powerhouse in state football, for at least the next two seasons. With a long history in sports reporting, Gary (who does freelance play-by-play for Sioux City Bandits indoor football and Briar Cliff University in addition to his coverage of high school sports on SDPB) has a personal interest in the social impact of sports on small towns. On the other side of the state, SDPB News Producer Charles Michael Ray is on the phone with Steve Hildebrand, a founding member of South Dakotans for Responsible Lending. The group is trying to get legislation passed to prevent predatory lending by payday loan operations. Charles has also reached out to Lisa Furlong, chair of a group — South Dakotans for Fair Lending — pushing an alternative proposal, but she won’t commit to an interview before he goes to press with the story. He’s also working on a story about a new food bank at Oglala on Pine Ridge. As he works, “My Twitter and news feeds are full of the unfolding story of the shooting death of two journalists. I have many

friends who refuse to watch the news. They tell me they just don’t turn it on. I know how they feel. Sometimes I wish I could do this. I still believe the work of journalists is more important than ever. I believe there are news organizations that strive to be free of bias. Accurate and balanced information compiled by trained journalists is more important now than ever.” Soon, intern Chynna SDPB News Reporter Kealey Bultena. Lockett comes in to the Rapid City office. It’s unclear how many people died or were injured by the enormous 2010 Guatemala City sinkhole that measured 65 feet across and approximately 100 feet deep. Although sinkholes can result from natural, geologic processes, human activities can speed up those processes. In Guatemala City, poorly designed and overused sewage systems helped trigger this terrifying event. Learn more on NOVA Sinkholes — Buried Alive. Learn. Dream. Grow.

Premiering Wednesday, Oct. 7, on SDPB1, the new documentary Black Hills Metamorphosis follows up on SDPB’s 2010 production, The Black Hills and the Mountain Pine Beetle, by examining efforts since 2010 to limit damage to Black Hills forests caused by the insect blight. Since 2010, 95-thousand more acres of Black Hills forest have been affected, totaling 430-thousand acres infested since the epidemic began in 1996 – equal to a quarter of the 1.5 million acres of

forested land in the Black Hills. Since 1996, federal, state, and local governments have spent approximately $55 million attempting to limit pine beetle damage and establish a healthier, more resilient forest. Meanwhile, some forest research asserts these tactics may be worsening the infestation. The documentary explores the feasibility of recovery for the Black Hills, given both the damage done and uncertainties posed by climate change.

In a dramatic re-enactment from Secrets of the Dead: Vampire Legend, a Saxon/early medieval man kneels graveside in an anti-vampire ritual. Clues in medieval burials in England may offer insight into physiological reasons for the formation of modern vampire myths. The cases hint at a deeply-held belief that the dead could rise and bring fear to the living – a belief that predates the Eastern European legend and is forcing a reexamination of the modern vampire legend.

Wagon trail riders from Eagle Butte to Isabel.

Dakota Life: Cowboy Up! Dakota Life, SDPB TV’s newsfeatures magazine, is back in the saddle throughout October, featuring events around the state that celebrate South Dakota’s cowboy heritage. The program visits Mitchell, where the Powderhorn Ranch Regulators shooting club hosts the 2015 National Cowboy Fast Draw Competition. This summer, gunslingers from throughout the U.S. thumbed and fanned their single-action western style shooters to see who was the fastest gun in the Midwest. Also, Dakota Life features the Scottie Stampede Rodeo and Celebration in Scotland, SD. A community of approximately 900 located in Bon Homme County,

Scotland has held the community festival for 50 years. In addition, SDPB documents a 30-mile wagon train from Eagle Butte to Isabel, SD. The wagon train and cattle drive features ranchers and riders driving South Dakota-bred Texas Longhorn “rollin’ over prairie where there ain’t no grass” and crossing the Moreau River. And, Dakota Life revisits the youth ropers and wranglers at the South Dakota 2015 High School Rodeo. Dakota Life airs several times through the month to give viewers multiple opportunities tune in. Past programs are available on demand at SDPB.org/DakotaLife.

(continued from page 5) Still, Cara has her hands full with the additional task of replacing Karl’s natural interview acumen. In the interim, she works on filling out the cast of Midday guests (and hosts) for the month ahead, edits stories sent in by Kealey, Charles and Chynna, and writes and produces a radio promo for Friday’s Dakota Midday Innovation. By now, Chris Laughery is looking at the news of the day, planning how to blend the South Dakota segments into All Things Considered. “My job is to take the news of the day from the reporters and deliver it to our audience. Do things change on the fly? Yes, they do. That’s what makes the day in the life of Chris Laughery so interesting. One day is never the same as the one before. The mechanics are the same but the news is different every single day.” As Chris goes on-air, Karl steps in to a production studio to do a phone interview with comedian Bill Maher,

prior to his performance in Sioux Falls, for an upcoming Midday. Nate Wek is on his way back from Bruce, headed to Sioux Falls to sort through photos and edit audio. Back in Rapid City, Cara’s edit of Charles’s story on payday loans has hit his inbox, so he puts on the headphones and records the audio for radio, then posts the story at listen.SDPB.org. He steps out for an appointment then comes back to the office at 7pm to talk with Chynna about potential leads and scheduling her work around the starting semester. Before leaving the office, he readies his equipment to cover the next day’s “Morning Fill Up,” a series of talks by national leaders, philanthropists and intellectuals at The Garage, an innovative co-working space in downtown Rapid City. In Vermillion, Cara fields several calls from people pitching stories while she also makes travel plans for an upcoming Innovation on location

in the Black Hills. She pens a reference for a former student at the University of Sioux Falls (where she teaches a media writing class) and monitors the day’s social media maelstrom, still reeling from the morning’s news. She checks in with Chris to make sure he has everything he needs before she leaves the office. Her day won’t end until midnight, when she’s sure all the latest news is ready for Gary when he steps into the studio for a new day’s Morning Edition. Despite the terrible national news, it’s been a relatively quiet, if distracted, day for the SDPB news team. “Most days spent on the phone leave me yearning to experience other places and have face-to-face conversations with people,” says Kealey. “I did that the next day, but that day I was content in my comfortable space, doing the quiet work behind providing people stories that allow them to decide what they think and how to impact their communities.” October 2015 17

Get Hip to New Jazz Nightly Host Karl Gehrke

Karl Gehrke.

SDPB Radio is proud to announce Karl Gehrke as the new host of Jazz Nightly. Karl has hosted SDPB Radio’s Dakota Midday for the past three years and Big Band Spotlight for the past two decades. Karl has nearly 25 years’ experience in public radio — from host of Morning Edition to news reporter, to arts critic to classical music host. However, Karl’s true passion is Jazz music and he’s thrilled to fulfill SDPB listeners’ demand for jazz programming. SDPB: How did you become a fan of jazz? What did your introduction and indoctrination to jazz music involve? Karl Gehrke: I grew up in Brookings listening to my dad’s jazz albums. I was too young to know how to properly handle them, so I scratched them to the point that many of them are now unlistenable. My parents took me to concerts at SDSU and I heard such jazz greats as trombonist Urbie Green, pianist Hampton Hawes, drummer Louis Bellson and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. I also played trombone in the Brookings Middle School and High School jazz bands, but I never developed into much of a musician. I also explored the jazz records and books at the Brookings Public Library. SDPB: Who are some current jazz musicians you are most excited to introduce to SDPB audiences? KG: Maria Schneider is one of today’s greatest jazz composers. Although she’s lived in NYC for the past three decades, she grew up in southwestern Minnesota and

20

Learn. Dream. Grow.

her music for jazz orchestra often evokes the prairie landscape. Her compositions are so spellbinding that I wish it were possible to physically live within their sounds. The Bad Plus bring a rock aesthetic to the traditional piano trio. Although they first gained attention for covering songs by Nirvana, Blondie and other rock groups, their real strength lies in their own compositions. They can be a bit avant-garde at times, but they never lose the groove and always have a sense of playfulness. Ben Allison is a bassist, composer and bandleader whose music, like the best of jazz, is filled with surprise. His music is risky and edgy with a variety of textures and moods, but it’s also strongly rooted in melody. SDPB: Why do jazz fans tend to be impassioned stockpilers of all things jazz? KG: I’m offended by this stereotype and would come after you if only I could find my way through this precarious maze of old Down Beat magazines. SDPB: What is your favorite way to listen to jazz music? KG: Wearing a beret and sunglasses while snapping my fingers, nodding my head and saying “yeah baby” during the solos. Actually, my favorite way to hear jazz is in live performance. Records can be great, but they’re a moment in time gone forever. Jazz is a constantly shifting, improvisatory music that can’t be truly captured in the grooves of a record or the bits in a CD or mp3. To truly understand what is so transcendent and exhilarating about jazz, it has to be experienced live. I’d love to have the opportunity to present live performances on Jazz Nightly. SDPB: Will you continue to host Big Band Spotlight? KG: I will. I’ve been doing the show since January of 1993 when I was a wee lad sporting a very stylish mullet. SDPB: What else would you like JN listeners to know? KG: I’m a morning person, so we’ll see how well I can adjust to hosting an evening show.

Return of the Great Sioux Horse Effigy

Great Sioux Horse Effigy.

On Sunday, Oct. 11, SDPB webcasts the celebration of the return of the Great Sioux Horse Effigy to the Museum of the South Dakota Historical Society in Pierre. The effigy is a 3-foot-long wood horse carving dating back to approximately 1875. Also known as a “horse dance stick,” the effigy has spent the last two years touring museums in Paris, New York, and Kansas City. As part of the return celebration, Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate artists Francis and Mary Country will teach a workshop on the art of horse effigy dance sticks, dolls and cradleboards. The effigy has inspired artists like Francis Country to reawaken the ancestral Dakota/Lakota/Nakota art form. The tradition of the horse effigy

“has been handed down for years and years,” says Francis, though “very few people really know about it. A long time ago our people, when their favorite horse died, they would make a [horse stick] and then they would paint it up, put all the family beadwork on it and they would use it for dancing, and that’s how they kept the spirit alive.” The Great Sioux Horse Effigy is renowned locally and globally by artists and scholars as a rare, masterful memento from 19th-century Plains Indian horse culture. With ears back, mouth agape, and a gracefully arcing body peppered in bullet wounds and blood of red paint, the effigy likely depicts the death of a warrior’s horse lost in battle. Horse effigies as a tribute to departed companion horses were often decorated with hides, fur, beads and

other accoutrements to represent their loyalty and accomplishments. Hair from the departed horse provides a physical link to its corporeal form. “When the horse came to the people it was highly honored, because that was a way they could hunt, travel; it helped them in warfare. It became their true relative,” says Mary. “When that horse died, the hair was taken, and when they danced, they danced with that stick to honor that fallen horse.” Francis is one of a small number of artists keeping the horse dance tradition alive. His first effigy, inspired by the horse stick in Pierre, was carved as a tribute to Mary’s great grandfather. He carves his horses from soft cedar and decorates them in collaboration with Mary, who does much of the beadwork, based on research of the tradition, mixed with intuition.
