SDPB’s new documentary profiles Rapid City’s dedicated American Legion program “The American Legion could well consider the advisability of assisting in the training of young Americans through our athletic games.”

~ Major John L. Griffith, Yankton College Athletic Administrator, 19021905; First Commissioner, Big 10 Conference, addressing the South Dakota State American Legion Convention in Milbank, 1925

by Katy Beem Celebrating almost a century, American Legion Baseball is such a summertime fixture in the United States, it’s hard to picture cornfields, dreamy or otherwise, where diamonds and bleachers now preside. But in Omaha in 1925, American Legion conventioneers resolved to make good on the vision of youth sports John L. Griffith proffered back in Milbank, and in 1926 a league was born. It’s no small point of pride that American Legion Baseball, which now numbers over 3,500 teams in all 50 states, was birthed in Milbank. South Dakota has 56 senior teams and 26 junior teams located throughout the state, from Sturgis and Martin to Howard and Sisseton. Not shabby for a state with as many folks as the entire population of Jacksonville, Florida. While all ninety-one of South Dakota’s American Legion teams have loyal followings and rich histories, one of the strongest American Legion programs in the nation plays at the Floyd Dave Ploof coached Fitzgerald Rapid City Post Stadium 22 Baseball from 1965-2011.

in Rapid City. Since their inception during WWII, the American Legion Post 22 Hardhats have won 41 state titles and gone to eight American Legion World Series – including a win in 1993. Dynasty on the Diamond: Post 22 Baseball, a new documentary from SDPB, chronicles Rapid City’s esteemed Legion team. Current Hardhats head coach Mitch Messer remembers attending Post 22 games as a kid in the mid-1980s, chasing foul balls and dreaming of wearing the team’s signature hard hat one day. Messer fulfilled that dream, signing on in 1993 as a 14-year-old. Ideally, prospects come in young and work their way up through the ranks from Bullet to Expo to Hardhat. Messer cites this qualifying process as “the secret sauce” to the program’s success. “From the time you walk into this program,” says Messer, “you have to earn everything you get. Whether its playing time, your jersey – if you want to wear a hard hat, you’ve got to earn that.” The competition is robust. This season, for example, just six players out of fifteen qualified for the hat.

“If you build it, he will come.”

~ Shoeless Joe by W.P. Kinsella As a former Hardhat, Messer knows intimately the demands of a program which extols “a tradition of excellence.” Messer came into the program the same year the Hardhats won the World Series under famed Coach Dave Ploof, who Messer went on to replace in 2011. “Coach was hard,” Messer says of Ploof. “He was a hard guy and he was a hard coach. And most of the guys that graduated, they all tell you the same thing – they’re thankful for that. He expected nothing but the best and you either figured it out or you weren’t back on the playing field. I wouldn’t be who I am today if it were not for Coach Ploof.” Dave Ploof passed away in May of 2017. With Ploof as head coach from 1965 to 2011, the Hardhats won 34 state titles. Patty Ploof, Ploof’s widow and a retired high school teacher, says Ploof was appreciative of the community in Rapid City. “It supported him and his vision for bringing great baseball to Rapid City,” says Ploof. “He knew these kids could compete at a national level. He knew that hard work would get them there.” Tom Rudebusch has announced Post 22 games since 1975, including travel games. Like Messer, Rudebusch credits Coach Ploof for fortifying his work ethic. “He had the same influence on me as he had on a lot his ball players,” says Rudebusch. “Dave was a man of high character, a very honest man, a very disciplined man.” Rudebusch relates how Ploof joked about renewing Rudebusch’s contract each season. “In jest, for 37 consecutive Aprils, when I

would call him, he would say, ‘Well, let me think about it, but why don’t you come back and we’ll evaluate at the end of the season.’” While the legacy of Coach Ploof’s high expectations are imbued into the Post 22 program, Rudebusch and Patty Ploof agree Coach Ploof knew Fitzgerald Stadium was not the house that only Ploof built. “He was so proud of the parents,” says Patty. “They put in hours at the ballpark and built so many of the things there. And we had great fans. Dave really appreciated them and that they were always knowledgeable fans who knew their baseball and appreciated great plays not only from our team but from the visiting teams.” “Dave appreciated people who helped build the program into what it was,” says Rudebusch. “Dave was the main architect, but he recognized there were a lot of people who helped him along the way that made the program what it is today.” Messer says he feels driven to uphold the tradition of great baseball for which Post 22 is known. “The game of baseball right now is changing rapidly,” says Messer. “Our coaching

staff and organization is constantly pushing in the offseason to be better. We want to be a learning organization and create a culture of seeking new and better information and ways.” “I know this is what I’m supposed to be doing,” says Messer. “Someone once asked me what keeps me up at night. If there’s anything, it’s that we continue to be good stewards of what we’ve been given.” Dynasty on the Diamond: Post 22 Baseball premieres Thursday, Oct. 5 at 8:30pm (7:30 MT) on SDPB1.

South Dakota Focus: Opioid Abuse & Water Fights

This month South Dakota Focus, SDPB’s interactive discussion program, tackles issues affecting South Dakota. Join host Stephanie Rissler for these anticipated topics: Opioid Epidemic: Thursday, Oct. 12, 8pm (7 MT) According to the World Health Organization, two of every 50 deaths in the United States in 2015 was drug-related, while a survey from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration indicates over 97 million people took prescription painkillers in 2015 – 12 million without a doctor’s direction. Addiction to prescription painkillers has spawned a massive market for street heroin and fentanyl, a synthetic opioid. We’ll discuss how the epidemic is affecting communities in South Dakota and solutions

being undertaken and considered by officials. Drought Impact Update: Thursday, Oct. 19, 8pm (7 MT) Above-normal temperatures and little rain have made for South Dakota’s worst drought since 2012, with as much as 80% of the state experiencing some stage of drought. We’ll discuss how the drought’s direct effects on the state’s agricultural economy impacts state and local tax revenues. Water Fight: Thursday, Oct. 26, 8pm (7 MT) Representatives from the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks, landowners, and other stakeholders discuss the latest rulings

regarding the non-meandering water issue and water rights in South Dakota. SDPB invites you to join the conversation! Submit your questions and comments during each live broadcast: Phone: 1-877-456-0766 Email: SDFocus@sdpb.org Facebook: Facebook.com/SDFocus Watch on SDPB1 or live at www.SDPB.org/live The Drought Impact Update Thursday, Oct. 19, 11am-1pm (10am-Noon MT) In the Moment discusses the impact of the 2017 drought.

Hugs from Buddy at Storybook Land!

This summer SDPB spread pollination education across South Dakota with the help of our mascot Buddy. We visited 8 events across the state and saw over 20,000 kids this year! Buddy helped the kids make seed sticks to attract and feed bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Science Steve also attended events across the state with his amazing science demonstrations. Thank you for a great summer! We look forward to seeing everyone again next year. For now, you can enjoy some fun kids activities during the school year visit SDPB.org/Buddy.

October Dakota Life: Colorful Things This month’s SDPB’s Dakota Life takes you up and away to Sioux Falls, where we meet Orvin Olivier, who’s been piloting hot air balloons for over 40 years. Olivier is also an expert in the history of hot air ballooning and has a collection of old photos, film, and video of the world’s first practical hot air balloons. Many were designed, built, and flown around South Dakota by engineers and aviators working for Sioux Falls-based Raven Industries. Watch rare, vintage film of Ed Yost ascending in the hot air balloons Raven 1 and Raven 2 and see Olivier’s replica of Raven 1. And we travel to Yankton for some surf and turf on the Missouri River. Sail along with SDPB on a pontoon boat as we follow the Bash to the Colonies Sailboat Race, a fundraiser for disabilities that goes from Yankton to Bon Homme Colony and back. Next, pop ashore to trek Yankton’s popular bike trails with Larry Rohrer. Tune in to Dakota Life Thursday, Oct. 5, at 8pm (7 MT) on SDPB1.

So Long, Car Talk Thanks for the belly laughs. Tom Magliozzi, one of public radio’s most popular personalities, died in 2014 of complications from Alzheimer’s disease. He was 77 years old. Along with his brother Ray, Tom hosted Car Talk – the call-in talk show with the boisterous mechanics. It was groundbreaking and went on to become one of public radio’s most popular programs ever. After Tom’s death, Car Talk continued as The Best of Car Talk and aired on SDPB for over three years. The last show will air Sept. 30. As demands for trustworthy news sources grow, SDPB will began airing an additional hour of NPR’s Weekend

Edition on Saturday mornings starting in October. It replaces Car Talk. Throughout the summer, all SDPB Radio and Engineering hands were on deck as SDPB updated our program automation system. This change to AudioVAULT enables SDPB to record and log audio from more sources and to repurpose content for SDPB Digital. These changes are part of SDPB’s statewide efforts to provide local, national and global content to South Dakotans as expediently and costeffectively as possible. Send us your feedback! We love to hear from you. 800-456-0766 or programming@sdpb.org. October 2017 19

The Vietnam War: Legacies & Lessons in South Dakota SDPB wants to thank everyone who attended and supported our statewide outreach efforts in conjunction with Ken Burns’ and Lynn Novick’s documentary The Vietnam War. SDPB was able to conduct these outreach efforts with the support of a grant from WETA – the public media station headquartered in Washington, DC, that has helped produce Ken Burns’ documentaries. But locally, it was the generous assistance of veterans, military families, veterans’ organizations, community organizations, and individuals and groups who simply wanted to lend a hand, time, or talent, that made it possible for SDPB to present screenings and courageous conversations in communities throughout South Dakota. And with the commitment of South Dakota residents and communities, the names of the fallen on The Wall That Heals, the Vietnam War Memorial Wall replica, were honored in an escort and ceremony attended by thousands. Local support for The Vietnam War came from Black Hills Energy, Scull Construction Services, Inc., and Sanford Health. SDPB also collected the important stories of veterans, families, and others who experienced the Vietnam War. They were generous to share how this difficult time changed them and changed South Dakota. The stories of South Dakotans are also being shared nationally on PBS’s The Vietnam War website. To view a collection of South Dakotans’ stories, visit SDPB.org/Vietnam.

Gayle Grothe.

Congratulations, Gayle Grothe!

In August, Gayle Grothe celebrated 40 years with Friends of SDPB. Gayle has worked at Friends of SDPB since 1977, nearly as long as the organization has been in existence! As Vice President of Membership, Gayle has provided topnotch service to members and ensured their interests were represented to the SDPB Network. It’s estimated that during Gayle’s tenure, Friends has raised over $65 million to support programming at SDPB.

Friends of SDPB Ribbon Cutting in Brookings While celebrating Gayle Grothe’s anniversary, Friends of SDPB also held a ribbon cutting for their new Brookings location. Located downtown at 418 4th Street, the move makes way for Friends to better serve SDPB members and utilize volunteers on a regular basis. Stop by and say hi!
