This month, PBS President and CEO Paula Kerger returns to South Dakota to help with the official opening and ribbon-cutting for the SDPB Sioux Falls Studios. The new facility is a reporting and storytelling production center for original SDPB media content. It also serves as a public gathering space for program tapings, premieres, and musical and arts events. Kerger was on-hand last October for the opening of the Black Hills Studio in Rapid City. Kerger commented, “This has been a profoundly interesting time to be in public broadcasting, to be in any media organization, because the world has changed a lot. I’ve been in this position for 12 years and when I first came, the idea of being able to watch television on your smart phone or your tablet … it’s just a sea change. We’ve spent a lot of time paying attention to making sure that we meet our viewers’ expectations.” Kerger emphasizes the importance of staying the course of public media’s mission. “During the explosion of reality shows, it would have been tempting to dip our toe into that same work. We resisted those temptations and, in fact, doubled-down on what has always defined us. I think the results have been extraordinary. Our audience has grown over a period of time when most broadcasters have seen a decline in viewership. Our audiences are large, dedicated and discerning. They expect a focus on highest-quality and that is where we put all of our efforts.” Join Kerger and SDPB supporters as we celebrate public media’s continuing mission in South Dakota.

This October, SDPB premieres Native America, a new documentary from PBS. Narrated by Robbie Robertson (Mohawk and member of the rock group The Band), the four-part series was produced with active participation of Native American communities. It weaves history, science and living traditions from Comanche, Cree, Iroquois, Hopi, Yupik and other nations. In South Dakota, Dr. Craig Howe (Oglala Sioux) has made it his life’s work to present opportunities for everyone to expand their knowledge about our indigenous communities. In 2004, Howe founded the Center for American Indian Research and Native Studies (CAIRNS) in Martin, whose mission is to develop educational resources and projects that “incorporate and acknowledge tribal perspectives.” Takuwe, Lakota for “why” and pronounced “DAW-ku-way,” is an art exhibition about the Wounded Knee Massacre from the perspective of Lakotas. The fourth in a series of educational art exhibits from CAIRNS, Takuwe is comprised of paintings, sculpture, songs, poems, videos, and fiber art from 46 artists, but also includes community-contributed pieces. Takuwe is on display at the Akta Lakota Museum in Chamberlain through October 22, 2018. From there, it travels to the South Dakota Art Museum in Brookings. Katy Beem: “How long, from the genesis of the idea to the curation at Akta Lakota, did Takuwe take to develop?” Dr. Craig Howe: “That’s really hard to say. When I was in architecture school, around 1980, I designed a museum and visitor center for Wounded Knee.

So that long ago I was proposing ‘something’ for the site. When I was a kid we visited Wounded Knee a number of times. We live about 40 miles away, and so from a very young age I felt the importance of the site. In November 2017, I emailed the first twenty artists inviting them to participate.” KB: “Why did you develop this exhibition?” CH: “First of all, the term ‘takuwe’ came from Richard Red Owl, one of the artists. When I invited him to be part of it, he was reminiscing about what the old people used to say. He said, ‘the one thing they almost always said at the end of talking about the massacre at Wounded Knee was why?’ We’ve developed strong techniques for these exhibits and wanted to apply that to an historical event here in South Dakota within the boundaries of the Pine Ridge Reservation.” KB: “What did you provide to the artists for them to respond to in order to develop their pieces?” CH: “This was a little different than the other three exhibits in the sense that those were based on traditional narratives. This is about an historical event and there isn’t one narrative. I didn’t want to start the exhibit with killing or end it with killing. So, we took seven one-word sections that stretch out from the massacre on December 29, 1890, until today. We start with ‘Belief’ and end with ‘Proposal.’” KB: “The Takuwe catalog says the intent is to begin with the positives and close with a call to action. Please tell us more about that.” CH: “The positives are mostly tied to the Ghost Dance – the spiritual belief, or religion, that Lakotas learned from the Paiute Indian Wovoka in Nevada. A delegation of Lakotas spent the winter in Nevada learning from him and came back to share their knowledge with other citizens on this reservation. As with almost all spiritual traditions, there’s all these positives. These Lakotas were believing positive things. It was what they needed at that time.”

KB: “And what is the call to action at the close of the exhibition?” CH: “After the massacre on December 29, the U.S. did nothing for about five days. They just left the bodies laying out there. They hired a civilian company to bury the bodies on January 3 and 4. They buried them in one mass grave and didn’t mark it in any way. The first permanent marker was designed and paid for by one of the survivors, Joseph Horn Cloud, in 1903. Since then, all these 120-plus years, there’s been efforts to commemorate, to remember the people massacred that day. This call to action is to support those ongoing efforts to appropriately commemorate those people who were slaughtered.” KB: “What are some of the ideas for an appropriate commemoration?” CH: “Part of it is education and just the sense that those of us who live here in these reservations and in South Dakota be taught about this event, this tragedy. To get this into schools and to do it in an academic, scholarly way is important. Other ongoing efforts are to create something like a tribal national park or even a federal park, or a museum and interpretive center. Somewhere people could come, reflect and learn what happened there in 1890. It’s also significant that it’s the same location for a very important occupation in 1973. Two epitomizing events in United States American Indian history happened at the very same location right there in Wounded Knee.”

KB: “In terms of commemoration, I learned at the Takuwe exhibit that one of the first acts of commemoration was that relatives and friends put sticks in the ground where people died in 1890. You transformed that into providing 5x5inch squares, small canvases for folks from the community to create their own artistic response. Those pieces are extremely powerful. Can you talk about that?” CH: “That’s a key part of our exhibit, trying to engage broader audiences so a wider group of people feel invested in them. This is a way to commemorate those 300 people who were killed. We’ll commission any Lakota person who wishes to create one of these squares. The pay is $12.29, so it’s December 29, and a copy of the catalog. We’ve had this wonderful response from students, inmates, professional artists – a wide swatch of people. The goal is to get 300. Just as those memory sticks from 1891 marked where loved ones died, these 5x5 squares are contemporary memory sticks to commemorate those people.” KB: “I enjoy that the catalog comes with a Dropcard, like a credit card, so I can download the songs and audio pieces from the exhibition.” CH: “Yes, it’s another way we’re trying very hard to make these exhibitions reach wider audiences and provide educators with opportunities to engage with it in different ways.” (continued on page 16) October 2018

KB: “Dakota writer Elizabeth Cook-Lynn has said about Native Americans, ‘we’re not just warriors and massacres, we’re more complex than that. How does the Takuwe exhibition help address Ms. CookLynn’s statement?” CH: “I completely agree with that statement, with this orientation that if we look at American Indians as existing only in the past, and almost always male, and fighting, we’re not better than stereotypes and mascots. The first three exhibits focused on traditional narratives and this one, of course, is focused on this massacre. But the artists who are interpreting it are so diverse – they’re in 14 states and two Canadian provinces, they live in cities, in reservations, they’re young and old, highly accomplished artists and up-and-coming artists, including students as young as 10 years old. It’s showing the diversity of Lakotas. And the diversity of their art demonstrates there is no one way 16

to be Lakota or to represent Lakotas. As with any other nation in the world, Lakotas are diverse and our exhibitions and educational materials should be reflective of that diversity.” KB: “What did you learn as you curated this project?” CH: “Studying the eyewitness accounts and atmospheric conditions from that time, we learn it was unseasonably warm on December 29, 1890. The blizzard didn’t come until New Year’s Eve. The power of this narrative has been there was a blizzard and bitter cold. Thank goodness Charles Eastman thought to go back and look for survivors. They saved 11 persons. And evidence from Black Elk shows he first started encountering bodies three miles from Wounded Knee. The killing lasted many hours. It’s hard to learn these facts, but it’s fascinating and exciting. We have a chance to change how that massacre is written and represented now.”

KB: “Are you still focusing on this exhibition and the educational pieces that go along with it or working on CAIRNS’ next project?” CH: “One aspect we’re working on very hard right now is K-12 curriculum tied to the exhibit. We’re working with a team of Native educators across our state to develop activities teachers can implement in their classrooms. We’re also creating community-based versions of these exhibits, high-quality reproductions for communities, schools, places where they don’t have museums.” Takuwe is at Akta Lakota Museum in Chamberlain through October 22. Leaving a Legacy: SDPB Member Profiles

October is Planned Giving Month. SDPB is extremely fortunate to have supporters who are including SDPB in their estate planning. It’s not an overstatement to say these donors are providing a legacy to help provide lifelong learning for generations of South Dakotans to come.

Victoria Kingslien, Florence, SD In the midst of her long career managing federal buildings and facilities in Washington, DC, Victoria Kingslien did not see foresee her return to Codington County and the rural community in which she grew up. “But never say never,” laughs Kingslien. The great-granddaughter of homesteaders who founded historic Goodhue Lutheran Church, Kingslien renovated her godparents’ 1950s 22-acre farm and returned in 2007. After restoring eight outbuildings, Kingslien is intent on restoring the shelterbelt. “I do a lot of chain sawing and I have two zero turn radius mowers,” says Kingslien. “I’m outside most of the day. It’s really fun.”

When darkness and winter move her inside, Kingslien says she turns to SDPB. “I love Masterpiece and I listen to Morning Edition and NPR all afternoon because I want to hear news and current events and I don’t want somebody’s opinion, I want facts,” says Kingslien. “We’re going through a desert these days of factual news. We have to do more than regret that, we have to demonstrate how news can be factual and compelling so that people’s minds can be open to see different points of view. But it also has to be entertaining with interesting, diverse topics. It’s curated – everything is intentional and thoughtful. I want you to work for me and that’s why I gave money.” A planner to the bone, Kingslien says she’s including SDPB in her estate because “I want my money and efforts to keep working after I’m gone. I’m impressed with how SDPB broadcasts high school sports and music, the work you do during the legislative session in Pierre, and interviewing candidates. I want my money to be put to good use when I’m not here to nag them about it. To educate people, to illuminate people with culture and the arts, to shed light on things. I think SDPB can be an enlightening influence on the state, with programs that are truthful, comprehensive, in-depth, interesting, useful and professional.” Kathy Johnson & Doyle Estes, Rapid City Kathy Johnson is a scientist who was raised in Perkins County. Her husband, Doyle Estes, grew up in Wall and practices law in Rapid City. Fans of PBS NewsHour, Morning Edition, All Things Considered and Marketplace, the couple are including SDPB in their planned giving. “Our fundamental view is

that education is just critical to our democratic system,” says Johnson. “Education extends way beyond school, and good informative radio and TV programs allow and create that for lifetime learning. Both of us really think that’s absolutely critical. We hope to provide for all of the people that public broadcasting will be there for, including all the people that come after us.”

Dakota Life: For Love of the Game This month Dakota Life takes you behind the scenes to share personal stories about South Dakotans with a passion for sports. We showcase Michael Gast, the first-ever athlete from the South Dakota School for the Blind and Visually Impaired, the SDSBVI Pioneers, to run in a state-sanctioned track meet. Originally from Sturgis, Gast is leading the way for other athletes to not feel restricted by boundaries. Born completely blind, Gast has had three surgeries that enable him to make out white lines on the black racing track. “Since we found out I can actually do it, I didn’t want to throw it away,” says Gast. “You find out you can do it, you do it. I didn’t want to throw it away. You gotta put it to good use.” Venture to May Acres Golf Course in Selby, one of the few golf courses that still has sand greens. Originally

constructed with sand greens, May Acres has decided to stay the course. “For grass, we lack water,” says Justin Baumann, secretary at May Acres. Maintaining grass is expensive and artificial has its own drawbacks. “So, we try to make it just the nicest sand course that there is.” And meet Gary and Terry Duffy, brothers and high school football referees in South Dakota. Gary is a Volga farmer and Terry is a Brookings banker, and together they are two of the longest-serving officials in the state, having started officiating in the late 1970s and early 1980s. “It’s the kids that keep you involved,” says Terry. “The interaction with them, I try to think that they keep me young.” Catch the latest episode of Dakota Life, Thursday, October 4, at 8pm (7 MT).
