SDPB Black Hills Bureau Goes Live The SDPB Black Hills Bureau officially opens in September. Made possible with funding from individual and corporate donors, the bureau will serve as a reporting and storytelling production center for original media content created in the Black Hills and a public gathering space for program tapings, premieres, and audienceparticipation events. The new location will also permit broadcasts of SDPB’s statewide programs from Rapid City and will support smaller-scale live and prerecorded television programming and digital-first productions for SDPB.org, Radio, and Television. Membership support staff also will be housed in the new office. SDPB’s Black Hills Bureau is located in the Parts Central Building, 415 Main Street in downtown Rapid City.

The Vietnam War Screening – Wednesday, Sept. 6, 6pm in the South Dakota Community Foundation Room A special, 60-minute preview screening of never-before-seen footage from Ken Burns’ and Lynn Novick’s epic documentary The Vietnam War. Veterans and their families and the public are invited. Following the screening, SDPB producers will be on-hand to record individuals’ stories about their Vietnam War-era experiences.

South Dakota Focus Season Premiere – Thursday, Sept. 14, 8pm (7 MT) Live from the Black Hills Surgical Hospital Studio, host Stephanie Rissler and guests discuss veterans’ services in South Dakota. We’ll tour the new facilities at the Sioux Falls Veterans Administration, discuss the Veterans Choice Program, as well as the priorities of new U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs David Shulkin. Scheduled guests include Larry Zimmerman, Secretary of the South Dakota Department of Veterans Affairs; Sandra Horsman, Director of the Black Hills VA healthcare system in Ft. Meade and Hot Springs, and Darwin Goodspeed, Director of the Royal C. Johnson Veterans Memorial Medical Center in Sioux Falls.

Q & A with Filmmakers Ken Burns & Lynn Novick

Q: Why was it important for you to tell the story of Vietnam?

Ken: I think the Vietnam War is arguably the most important event of the second half of the 20th century. It’s a defining moment.

Lynn: It’s an extraordinarily important period in history and it is very much unresolved. It is extremely painful and divisive in our culture and it is very poorly understood. We felt it was important to take a look at the story of the war, what happened and why. And perhaps most important – why is it such a difficult subject for us to talk about as a country? Mission one for us was to honor the service and sacrifice of the people who served and died. Give them their due respect as part of the larger story of what our country went through and also what this experience meant for the Vietnamese people. Q: How do you tell the story of the most divisive period within our nation during the 20th century?

Ken: I think you want to tell a complete story so we’ve taken 10 episodes and 18 hours to do it. We’ve worked on this story for 10 years. The film represents 45 years of scholarship that adds on to the experiences of the 4

service members. Obviously, war is human beings at its worst but it also paradoxically brings out the best and we’ve not neglected to point out those positive aspects, those heroic aspects, at the same time we delve into a war that many Americans would rather ignore.

involved in a conflict in a country far away that we didn’t really understand. We didn’t understand our allies or our enemies. We as filmmakers did not want to make that same mistake. I spent a lot of time in Vietnam getting to know people who lived through the war there and hearing from civilians and soldiers. And also speaking to Vietnamese-Americans who fled Vietnam after the war. What we found was that the war is as complicated and unresolved and as difficult to talk about for them on all sides as it is for us. Q: How do you think the Vietnam era changed our country?

Lynn: We set out to take a fresh look at this very complicated and divisive story through the eyes of the people who lived through it and to hear from as many different people with as many different experiences and perspectives that we could practically embrace. We interviewed close to 100 people. One of the tragedies of the Vietnam War is that America got

Ken: I think it really split it down the middle and in some ways the divisions that we experience today had their seeds in the Vietnam War. Of course the Civil War ripped huge divisions that are still with us too but I think Vietnam began to have people become cemented in their place and blinded by their particular ideology. I think it’s important to try to step back and see the larger picture. I think Vietnam is a hugely important, watershed moment in American history. Lynn: I think it’s impossible to look at our country today and not trace back many of the things that concern us back to the Vietnam era. It really split the country down the middle and we’ve never moved on from that. It ties into how the soldiers felt disre-

Q: Why does Vietnam still matter?

Ken: Just think about it. You want to understand Wiki leaks? Let’s go back to the Pentagon papers. You want to understand about meddling in foreign affairs, about political parties reaching out to foreign powers that’s right now in the news? That’s in the story of Vietnam. You want to find out about the disconnect between the generals who make the plans and the service members who do the fighting and dying? Vietnam reveals this. To understand Vietnam is to arm yourself in the best sort of way for how to deal with our present incredibly fraught moments. It couldn’t be more relevant than it is today.

Lynn: It was all-consuming to try to figure out the story we’re telling and to tell it well. I started off thinking I knew a fair amount about the Vietnam War. The reason that I wanted to make the film was because I had always been fascinated by it. I thought I knew a lot. The more I worked on the film, the more I knew I didn’t know so much after all. It’s a very difficult subject to understand. I don’t think we can understand who we are as a country without understanding what happened during Vietnam. Q: What did you learn from making this film?

completely aware that I came of age watching it. I felt like I knew something about it. I knew nothing about it – nothing. And so to me – It was this shear positive humiliation of suddenly just realizing I know nothing and that I had to really build back from the beginning. The film is this deep, deep dive into the things that I thought I knew and in some case I came to the understanding that not only I, but most of us, have just a conventional wisdom about it, kind of a superficial knowledge. Lynn: One thing that I learned that I will carry with me is that history is a lot more complicated than we give it credit for. There is no story that I’ve tried to tell that is more complicated than this. With any one aspect that we tried to tell – there were at least three points of view or more. It was a constant exercise in compassion. To try to understand how you could look at this particular battle from this point of view vs. this point of view. It’s important to be open to considering that things are not as simple as they seem.

Ken: Our scene of The Wall in our last episode is one of the most powerful scenes in the entire film. We reference The Wall without saying anything about in almost every episode. In our 10th episode, we tell the story of the competition, of the controversy, of the building and then its response in which suddenly in the presence of that gash in the ground – it’s as if it just asked people to say “shh, shh, shh, be quiet, stop talking, you don’t need to argue – just come here.” It is beyond effective. It’s one of the greatest works of art that I know. Lynn: I think what it did was it gave a place to go to collectively mourn and to honor the dead and to contemplate the true cost of war and the sacrifice that people made. It gave people a physical place to do that. It’s a gift to our country. It transcends the Vietnam War. It’s evolved into this place where people can come together and contemplate the human condition. I think that’s why so many people come there and leave things. They contemplate what it means to be alive. The Vietnam War premieres Sunday, Sept. 17 through Thursday, Sept. 21 & Sunday, Sept. 24 through Thursday, Sept. 28 at 7pm (6 MT) on SDPB1.

The Vietnam War: Legacies & Lessons in South Dakota

SDPB’s Dakota Life returns this month by introducing viewers to South Dakotans who served in the Vietnam War. The program is in conjunction with the premiere of Ken Burns’ & Lynn Novick’s The Vietnam War. We’ll meet James Pollock of Pierre and Stephen Randall of Sioux Falls. Pollock and Randall served in the Vietnam Combat Art program during the Vietnam War. The program sent nine Combat Art Teams (CATs) of soldier-artists into the field with soldiers on patrol. After their tour in the field, soldier-artists created their work in Hawaii. Originally stationed in Korea during the war, Specialist 4th Class Pollock applied to the Combat Art Team, was assigned to Long Biên and hitched rides all over Vietnam to sketch soldiers and scenes that he would later make into pen and ink or watercolor works. Pollock served in the CAT IV team in 1967 and Randall served in the CAT VII in 1968. We also learn about the service and homecoming experiences of

Ed McGaa and Francis Whitebird. Born on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, Oglala Lakota McGaa joined the Marines during the Korean War and later flew 110 combat missions as a fighter pilot in the Vietnam War. A graduate of the University of South Dakota Law School, McGaa has published several books, including Crazy Horse and Chief Red Cloud and Black Elk Speaks IV: Narration by a Teton Oglala Sioux. A member of the Rosebud Sioux, Francis Whitebird enlisted in the Army and was stationed south of Da Nang with the 196th Infantry Brigade. He served as a Combat Medic for 19 months and has been awarded the Purple Heart. Whitebird’s father, Noah Whitebird, was a WWII Lakota Code Talker. Whitebird’s great-grandfathers fought in the Battle of Rosebud and the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Whitebird’s sons Brendan and Colin served in Iraq. And we share the story of Soi Tran of Sioux Falls. Tran served in the South Vietnamese Army during the Vietnam War and was held as

prisoner of war for five years. In 1991, Tran moved with his family from Vietnam to Sioux Falls. We’ll meet Esther Huether who helped Tran and his family transition to life in the United States. Vietnam War Author Tim O’Brien Headlines SD Festival of Books “In Vietnam, for me, just to get up in the morning and look out at the land and think, ‘In a few minutes, I’ll be walking out there, and will my corpse be there? Over there? Will I lose a leg out there? I’d sometimes look at my legs as I walked and think, ‘How am I doing this?’” - Tim O’Brien in the PBS documentary The Vietnam War It’s tempting to feel like we know Tim O’Brien, author of the Vietnam War book The Things They Carried, so synonymous have his name and work become with Americans’ lens into the experience of U. S. infantrymen humping through the dense Vietnamese jungle. In fact, O’Brien and intimate storytelling are so integral to the American Vietnam War experience, directors Ken Burns and Lynn Novick tapped the respected writer to serve on the advisory panel for their 18-hour documentary. This year, thanks to the South Dakota Humanities Council (SDHC), South Dakotans have the opportunity to see and hear O’Brien at the South Dakota Festival of Books, which takes place September 22 - 24 in Deadwood. O’Brien presents Saturday, Sept. 23, at 7pm at the

These events highlight how the intersections of war, art, and storytelling can help both veterans and civilians connect and give meaning to experiences. For Sherry DeBoer, SDHC’s Executive Director, the recognition of veterans at each year’s Festival of Books is what she anticipates most highly. “The South Dakota Humanities Council has been working on veterans’ storytelling projects with other humanities councils for a long time,” says DeBoer. “We really believe in the fundamentals of veterans telling their stories and stories being able to share human ties. So, 3:00pm on Saturday (at the Festival of Books) until the end of the day is what I’m most looking forward to.” Saturday at 3:00pm during the festival is when South Dakota veterans will read essays and stories. Pulitzer Prize-winner and Vietnam War veteran Robert Olen Butler will preside over the reading, at which three area veterans will be recognized as winners of the Veterans Writing Prize. SDPB’s new documentary covers the state’s quilting culture.

Back in 2016, when SDPB’s Stephanie Rissler took on the project of documenting South Dakota’s quilting communities, she admits her knowledge about the craft was limited. “I know what a needle and thread is and I can sew a button on – but that’s about it,” says Rissler. “I really had to learn about this art from the ground up. I’m learning new things every day and it’s so interesting. I can see that those who quilt love it. I can’t wait to tell their story and show our viewers their beautiful artwork.” Currently in production, the new one-hour SDPB documentary Patchwork on the Prairie: Quilts of South Dakota premieres in November. The ambitious project will share the past, present, and future of quilting in South Dakota. Viewers are introduced to brilliant historical heirlooms and the stories of those who mastered the craft so many years ago as well as young quilters carrying it forward in unexpected ways. According to Rissler, learning about quilt making has also meant setting aside misconceptions. “Many have a vision of early-day settlers quilting blankets for their families as they settled in America during the colonial days,” says Rissler. “The truth is that only the rich could afford 20

quilts and often had them made by others. It wasn’t until much later in life when material was made in mass production that families from all kinds of economic backgrounds would begin to make quilts as we know them today.” Rissler has been moved by deeprooted relationships and powerful stories she’s discovered within the state’s quilting communities. “Many quilters will relate to the ‘sisterhood’ – as described by so many guild members and quilt makers,” says Rissler. “The bond that these quilters have created in different groups throughout the state is very similar and I believe viewers will relate to the stories. I also think viewers will enjoy hearing the personal historical stories that the quilters share. Some go back generations when families were homesteading in the Dakotas.” From county fairs and tribal lands to church basements and modern

quilting guilds, join SDPB as we travel the state to present the art and heritage of South Dakota’s vibrant quilting communities. Directly following at 5:30pm, comes a special preview screening of Burns’ and Novick’s The Vietnam War, followed by a discussion with Ron Capps, a veteran of the U.S. Army and Foreign Service, and founder of the national Veterans Writing Project. Capps will be joined by Vietnam War veterans Larry Mayes, of Rapid City, Brad Morgan, co-founder of the Black Hills Veterans Writing Group, and Craig Tschetter of Brookings. Tim O’Brien caps off the evening with a discussion about writing. DeBoer says the veterans-related programming conducted at the festival and throughout the year by the SDHC receives positive feedback. “Often there’s a real

reticence among veterans to talk about their experience,” says DeBoer. “Literature helps guide that process and facilitators help us see other’s viewpoints.” DeBoer cites face-to-face contact as one of the reasons for the success and popularity of the Festival of Books. “You can have sound bites, Tweets, 140 characters, or 30 seconds,” says DeBoer. “But it’s never really enough time to carry the full message. The Festival of Books focuses on what is most important: to talk, one-to-one, shake the other person’s hand, look in that person’s eyes. Tim O’Brien is considered the voice of veterans and being able to connect and learn from someone like him and others is really what the festival is all about.”
