Gather with your old favorites in a fresh new season of Father Brown. The South Dakota map Melissa Hamersma Sievers taped to her deskside upon her employ is generously studded with yellow, orange, and green dabs. They mark towns to which she’s traveled in her 18 years as an SDPB content producer and videographer. “I haven’t been to Edgemont yet, so the extreme southwest corner is a little bare,” says Hamersma Sievers. “And the northwest corner, I’m trying to track down a story there.” It’s clear the highlights mean more to Hamersma Sievers than mere dots on a map. “Next time I’m in my office, I need to remember to highlight Clear Lake!” exclaims Hamersma Sievers. “I hadn’t shot in Clear Lake before, so that was really exciting to get to a new community.” This September is Hamersma Sievers’ third season as producer of Dakota Life, SDPB’s flagship video-magazine program. The new season, the 23rd, looks a little different. “Dakota Life has always showcased our diverse population,” says Hamersma Sievers. “But we’re a very rural state, and we’ll still have stories from Rapid City and Sioux Falls, but we really want to highlight our rural communities.” Starting this season, Dakota Life ventures even deeper into the state’s some 77,000 square miles. Each episode will be anchored by a host community. Larry Rohrer, SDPB’s Director of Content and long-standing face of the program, steps outside the studio to shoot segment transitions from key locations in the host community.
In September, De Smet inaugurates the refreshed format. “De Smet is a wonderful town,” says Hamersma Sievers. “They’ve got a progressive industrial park, a number of folks in the surrounding area commute to De Smet to work. They raised a lot of money to put up a community and wellness center. That is pretty remarkable for a small town.” Hot Springs hosts in October. November is under consideration. But content producers, mindful of the impact COVID-19 has on interviews and shooting schedules, have been out inthe-field banking stories. “I am always on the lookout for stories about interesting people, places and things around the state,” says Hamersma Sievers. “The reason I like Dakota Life so much is that the people we visit with are passionate about whatever it is that we’re visiting with them about. I feel like every episode of Dakota Life pays tribute to those who came before, but then there’s a variety of people that are exploring and trying to do things differently, too. So many of the stories are about tenacity and connection to the land. South Dakota has some really interesting people within its population and it’s a treat when they agree to visit with us.” Have a story about a person or place in your Dakota Life? Heart-Shaped World In 1990, doctors told Lisa Casper that the heart she’d received from a 22-year-old woman who had died in a motorcycle accident might not survive past 10 years. Today, we meet Casper on the cusp of turning 52. She runs a business and enjoys gardening and other hobbies at the Arlington home she shares with her husband, Troy. “At age 30, I had a doctor who said I would never make it to age 40,” says Casper. “I’d kind of like to talk to him right now.” Cabin Fever Private cabins, public land: In decades past, both the Forest Service and Custer State Park allowed people to move private cabins onto public land in the Black Hills. Both programs stopped issuing new permits long ago, but hundreds of the old cabins are allowed to remain. Many are passed down through generations of families who lovingly care for these uniquely historic and rustic structures. We’ll visit several of the cabins, talk to the owners, and also talk to officials who administer permits for the cabins. Discovering His Roots Strong rodeo families abound in South Dakota, but a little more rarely in the southeast corner of the state. The Andersen ranch and arena three miles north of Viborg has existed since 1996. Since then, the family has represented at the high school state rodeo finals 26 years. Now meet 18-year old Shane, the latest Andersen legacy. Although Shane was later to find his love for rodeo, the recent Viborg-Hurley high school graduate plans to continue his career as a college rodeo-athlete at Mitchell Tech this fall. Going Dutch in Clear Lake Dine with the Dutch Oven Gathering (DOG) in Clear Lake, where outdoor chefs cook in cast iron over open fires and the meal is always potluck. Kingsbury Journal: To Be Continued When financial losses forced the closure of DeSmet News and Lake Preston Times this spring, the loss of a local newspaper hit hard for Kingsbury County residents. Feeling the void, area residents stepped forward to take on the writing, production and business of publishing a local paper through a community-based model. Learn how the volunteerrun news outlet is keeping local journalism alive. The season premiere of Dakota Life airs Monday, September 7, at 9pm (8 MT) on SDPB1. SDPB1: Tuesday, September 22, 8pm (7 MT) In the midst of an historic pandemic, surging unemployment and growing economic uncertainty, American voters will head to the polls this fall to decide whether President Donald Trump or former Vice President Joe Biden will lead the country for the next four years. And as it has for every election since 1988, FRONTLINE’s acclaimed series will investigate the life stories of the two candidates: the roots of their drive to be president, the moments that shaped them, and the life method that has brought them to this point. From veteran filmmaker Michael Kirk, who has made four prior installments of “The Choice,” this two-hour special will prepare Americans not just to vote in the election, but to understand what drives the president who will be sworn in on January 20, 2021 to lead a country in crisis.

Children of Giant
SDPB2: Saturday, September 26, 7pm & 11pm (6 & 10 MT) In the summer of 1955, it seemed as if all of Hollywood had descended on the dusty West Texas town of Marfa as production began on the highly anticipated movie Giant. The film starred a legendary trio — Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson and James Dean — along with actor Earl Holliman and 16-year-old Elsa Cardenas, who portrayed Juana, the MexicanAmerican girl who marries into the powerful Benedict ranching dynasty. Based on Edna Ferber’s novel, Giant was a different kind of western, one that took an unflinching look at feminism and class divisions and one of the first films to explore the racial divide between Anglos and Mexican Americans in the Southwest. Now, 60 years later, Children of Giant returns to Marfa to explore the dramatic story behind the making of the film and its enduring legacy. September 2020 17 September 2020 17
Katy Beem: This may seem like an obvious question, but what are the challenges of covering high school sports right now? Nate Wek: “The last time we had a sanctioned high school sporting event was March 13. It’s the first time in my lifetime I can remember Friday the 13th living up to the hype. I was obviously bummed when everything came to a screeching halt, but my emotions don’t even come close to what the student-athletes and coaches of South Dakota experienced. To say they were disappointed is an understatement. Over the past months I’ve had people ask me ‘Well, there aren’t any sports going on right now, so what do you do now?’ That’s easy, I still do sports! Just because sporting events stopped for a period of time doesn’t mean the athletes, coaches, programs, or goals went away. Plans may have been slightly altered, but those kids and aspirations are still there. I’ve spent a lot of time talking with coaches and kids throughout South Dakota, especially seniors, who had their plans drastically changed due to COVID-19. With the South Dakota High School Activities Association giving sanctioned activities the green light for fall, we’re going to see these students getting back into the routines that we’re used to seeing.”

KB: How do you report with so much in flux? NW: “I don’t know what tomorrow is going to bring or what things will look like in a month. My goal is to continue to find the stories that make SDPB high school sports coverage and student athletes great. Until someone tells me NOT to, or things get cancelled, I’m going to treat this fall like I would any other year. Even though things could close up again in a month or so, I’m planning for a ten-month high school sports and activities season in South Dakota. And we have profile pieces, sports history and plenty of other stories to tell.” KB: Coaches and schools are trying to ensure safety for their student athletes. Volleyball as an example: no teams switching sides, no player handshakes, a new or sanitized ball after each scored point. What are some other safety steps coaches/associations are taking that impact their sports? NW: “The safety step that is consistent across the state is ‘personal responsibility.’ Most coaches feel like they can keep kids safe when it comes to practice and games, but what each student-athlete does outside of school and activities is going to be what makes or breaks this attempt at normalcy. A lot of coaches are asking their kids to be safe when outside of school – follow normal social distancing guidelines and avoid situations and settings that are labeled ‘high risk’ for potential at acquiring the virus. Covering high school sports has become a huge passion in my life. It may seem like I’m overly cautious at times, but I want to see high school sports succeed

this school year in South Dakota. That said, safety has to be the first concern. I honestly feel like it’s possible to be safe and have sports and activities this year, but it’s going to take a lot of personal responsibility throughout the state to make that happen. People need to wear masks and be smart with which circumstances they put themselves in. I encourage people to reach out to me personally on Twitter @Nate_WekSDPB to pitch stories. I’m always looking for people to tell me about some of the great high school sports stories that South Dakota has to offer.” Follow SDPB’s high school sports coverage, including updates and athlete profiles: Facebook: @SDPBSports Twitter: @SDPBSports SDPB.org/SportsBlog SDPB.org/InPlay

Our Roots in Education
Run 80 Years Deep At Highmark, we’re proud of our heritage in education. In 1940, a small group of teachers decided to start their own credit union. From these humble beginnings, Highmark has grown to be a leading institution, still dedicated to our original mission of value, security, fairness and trust. Take advantage of financial solutions and choices designed to help you succeed financially and enjoy life to the fullest. After all, isn’t that what great banking should be? Not an educator? That’s OK. If you live or work in western South Dakota or eastern Wyoming, you can join Highmark and start banking better.

SDPB SUPPORTER SPOTLIGHT
HARVEY & HARRIET SVEC, BROOKINGS For entertainment, they turn to the Sunday evening lineup, like Masterpiece and the Brit programs. “I think it’s really important right now, for those of us who can give, to give as much as we are comfortable with. I think there have been people who have been affected by the pandemic, by the closing of businesses who can no longer give, and I think it’s even more important for those of us who can give to continue to do so as generously as we can.”
Harvey and Harriet Svec are retired SDSU faculty. Harvey taught in manufacturing, engineering and technology while Harriet taught in the Department of Electrical Engineering. Together they care for their acreage, where Harvey works on welding projects and enjoys the outdoors. Before the pandemic, Harriet volunteered at the public library and with tax preparation. Supporters of public broadcasting back when they lived in Minneapolis and of SDPB for many years since, Harvey and Harriet recently made the decision to join the Legacy Society by providing a planned gift. Harriet feels more urgency to give since the pandemic. “I think it really needs support right now,” says Harriet. “I’m sure there are people who used to give who can’t right now. We need to keep our news sources that have integrity as a part of our news life.” Harriet says SDPB Radio is always on in her car. “I like shows like On Point. I get a wider perspective of different topics. It appears to me to be wellresearched and their guests are qualified to offer facts.” She also enjoys In the Moment with Lori Walsh. 24

Friends of SDPB Celebrates 12,000th Member
Dena Sievers, a math teacher at Aberdeen’s Holgate Middle School, (not all heroes wear capes!) recently became the 12,000th Friend of SDPB. “I was the person that you talk about: who listen to NPR and watch PBS, but don’t donate. But public broadcasting is an essential part of how I get my information. In times like now, I trust it. I don’t go without it anymore. I know they’re being honest, giving me both sides, and allowing me to make a decision. I eventually got to the point that it was time for me to contribute!” Thank you Dena Sievers for your support (and for teaching algebra to middle schoolers!) SDPB wishes Dena a safe school year.
In addition to educational and thought-provoking journalism and programming, SDPB has a 24/7 Classical music station. Listen online at SDPB.org, on the SDPB app or ask your smart speaker to play “KUSD HD2.” Make a sustaining gift of $10/month and we’ll thank you with an SDPB facemask as well as access to SDPB Passport, to enjoy SDPB and PBS programs on demand. Make your gift now at sdpb.org/donate or call 800-333-0789.
Co-starring are Maimie McCoy (Wallander) as Van der Valk’s right-hand woman, Lucienne Hassell; Luke Allen-Gale (Dominion) as the scruffy sergeant, Brad de Vries; and Elliot BarnesWorrell (Jericho) as the squad’s brainy new guy, Job Cloovers. The recurring cast also includes Emma Fielding (Les Misérables) as Van der Valk’s incorruptible but indulgent boss, Julia Dahlman; and Darrell D’Silva (Game of Thrones) as the team’s hard-living, virtuoso pathologist, Hendrik Davie.

Amsterdam—city of bikes, boats, and bodies. At least, that’s the way steely-eyed cop Piet van der Valk sees his murder-infested beat. Marc Warren (Beecham House, The Good Wife) stars as the title character in Van der Valk an all-new, three-part series based on Nicolas Freeling’s legendary crime thrillers.
Together they face a trio of challenging cases that give a new slant to Amsterdam’s renowned sophistication, for it appears that the city’s stylishness and toleration go hand in hand with murder. September 2020 September 2020 25 25
