The Norman Signs:

After gold was discovered in the Black Hills, settlers and gold prospectors came to Fort Pierre by train or riverboat and then followed the Fort Pierre to Deadwood Trail out west. The trail is part of Deb Schiefelbien’s family history. In 1975 her grandparents, Roy and Edith Norman, put up 52 signs marking the old buffalo trail used by wagon trains headed for Deadwood.

In Poldark’s final scene last season, the brooding, impetuous captain (Irish actor Aidan Turner) and his flamehaired wife Demelza (England’s Eleanor Tomlinson) cling to one another atop a wind-blasted Cornwall cliff. Warmly lit by evening’s golden hour but grief-stricken from the most recent of unfathomable losses, the beautiful and wretched lovers gaze forlornly as waves crash below them in a tumultuous sea. A solo strand of violin rends a minor key, piercing through composer Anne Dudley’s swelling orchestral score. Ross Poldark pulls Demelza closer, declaring resolutely: “Together we shall try to resurrect the fortunes of the Poldark mines. Will that satisfy you?” Demelza, eyes glinting with tears, replies softly in Cornish lilt: “So there is hope. And it will not have been for nothin’ after all.” She presents a small yellow ribbon to the sky. Ripped away by a seaside gale, it floats down toward the sea. Suddenly Redcoats march into 4

frame. The lovers are pulled apart. Ross is marched away on charges of murder, wrecking, and inciting a riot. Demelza stands alone and buffeted atop the cliff. And scene. With the close of season one, the British period piece empire strikes back, exporting the latest lush historical drama that has become the hallmark of Sunday evening Masterpiece. This reboot of Poldark (a popular precursor aired on PBS in the mid1970s) is based on the 12-book series of historical novels by British writer Winston Graham. In literary terms, Graham’s Poldark series is a roman fleuve, French for “river novel,” an extended sequence of dramatic and intimately observed books that winds through generations of inter-related people as it makes a political statement on the era in which they live. It is the stuff of which Masterpiece melodrama is best made. At the beginning of the first season,

by Katy Beem British soldier Poldark returns from the American Revolutionary War to a life in ruins. While he was away halfheartedly fighting rebellious colonists — more to repay gambling debts than to reclaim lands for the Crown — his father has died, his girlfriend has taken up with his cousin, and the Cornish tin mines he inherits are diminished. But the rakish boy returns from Virginia battlefields an emboldened man, and though his rebellious nature has not been fully expunged, war and loss have honed it toward good works. Poldark rallies to restore his father’s derelict mine and with it the livelihoods of his estate’s tenants, confronting greedy bankers and mislaid justice along the breathtaking sweep of the Cornish cliff sides. Scriptwriter Debbie Horsfield, charged with adapting Graham’s popular novels for the screen, laughed in an interview that, prior to reading them, she had anticipated light beach-reading. “But [Graham’s] is really good writing. These characters

spring off the page. The story is spellbinding.” Central to binding this spell is the motif of mixing social classes. Poldark sweats in the mines alongside his employees and marries his Eliza Doolittle-esque maid. “One does feel,” remarks the uppity Mrs. Chynoweth to Ross, “that the gentry and the vulgars should keep themselves to themselves. Otherwise it gets so confusing.” But what’s confusing to the gentry is plain to the vulgars, and in turn, the viewers – since most of us identify with the vulgars. Breaking class boundaries, a tension upon which Downton Abbey relied, is where most of the fun and opportunity lie. Martin Fashbaugh, professor of 18th & 19th century literature at Black Hills State University, notes, “The attempt to exaggerate cross-tension between classes is necessary for telling a good story. Ross Poldark’s marrying of Demelza functions both mythically as a type of Cinderella story and historically as a challenge to the British class system of the late 1700s and early 1800s.” But critics and Poldark’s legions of fans (5.9 million Brits tuned in for the finale on BBC), assert that notable scenes in this Cinderella story fit the glass slipper firmly on the other foot, as Demelza, curtained behind a cover of upland wildflowers, watches Ross bathe or toil in states of undress. Indeed, the now-famous scene that has Ross shirtlessly scything out his frustrations on the meadow created a Twitterstorm as thousands of fans collectively gasped across social media. Fashbaugh thinks it’s a deliberate attempt to buck the trend of the traditional male gaze. “Laura Mulvey, who wrote the essay ‘The Female Gaze,’ hoped for a time when cinema and its male gaze, and the way it manipulates how we look at women, would reverse,” says Fashbaugh. “The camera looks at Demelza from the perspective of the male gaze as well, but I think what we see in Poldark is more reciprocal than what you find in traditional Hollywood media.” In Poldark, the camera loves the countryside as much as its protagonists. The cinematography luxuriates in grand views of the verdant Cornish moors that plunge

into sheer granite cliffs towering over the churning sea. Poldark thunders through the moorland astride his mighty Irish draft horse to and fro estate, village and mineshaft, Demelza often bouncing in tow. The opulent camerawork and score enhance the way director Edward Bazalgette (EastEnders) chose to turn the location into a character. Composer Dudley has said, “In the 1780s, Cornwall was really the wild west; as soon as you crossed the Tamar River, you were in this wild, desolate place, really cut off from the rest of civilization.” Fittingly, the score ranges from dramatic strains to romantic harp to traditional folk music. Cinematic escapism aside, Fashbaugh says viewers likely appreciate the moments of grittier realism and humor found in depictions of Ross’s saucy servants who, in contrast to the crisp Downton downstairs crew, overtly lack dentistry and decorum. “Poldark thankfully

breaks the stereotype of the strictly reverential servant. Jud Paynter and Prudie, for instance, are not afraid to express their opinions to the master [and] they appeal to any viewer who has resented the hubris of authority figures.” The rise of predatory lending amidst economic collapse also reverberates. “Poldark presents us with certain economic realities with which many of us can identify,” says Fashbaugh. “Over the last 40 years the mining industry in America has collapsed in certain parts of the country. In Poldark we are reminded of how geopolitical and economic change can devastate individual lives.” Ross, Demelza and their downtrodden cohorts return to assail personal and economic adversity amidst the spectacular scenery of the Cornish moorland when Poldark Season 2 premieres on SDPB1, Sunday, September 25 at 7pm (6 MT). The forces of nature make Earth a restless planet, but they also turned our ball of rock into a home for life. Workers of the sulphur mine within the Kawah Ijen volcano in Indonesia (right) battle to put out the blue flames of burning sulphur. How did our planet’s ingredients, the chemical elements, come together and take that first crucial step from barren rock to a living world? The four-part science miniseries Forces of Nature explores the fundamental forces that shape our very existence. Episodes include the way gravity manifests itself, the weird and wonderful properties of light and color, the very nature of the Earth, and the internal motion that drives our bodies, our weather and some of the most dramatic events on the planet. Celebrating 40 Years of Support: SDPB Charter Members This month we continue to profile just a few of the 210 individuals and families who comprise SDPB’s charter members. Charter members first gave to SDPB between 1974 and 1976 and have continued since. It’s notable that when these founding members donated 40 years ago, South Dakotans were dealing with the Vietnam War era and the unemployment, gas and farm crises that afflicted the nation. Yet, amidst this financial uncertainty, the charter members – many of them fledglings in their careers or young families – chose to support South Dakota Public Broadcasting because they experienced, on a daily, personal basis, the power of public media to educate and inform during uncertain times. Their generosity benefited young and old South Dakotans then as their continued support does today, through their individual donations and matching gifts.

Jerry & Fee Jacobsen, Pierre, SD Prior to retirement, Jerry worked for the State of South Dakota and together he and Fee ran Pierre’s Zesto through the late 1970s-80s. How they became Friends of SDPB: “A friend, a lover of opera like Jerry, introduced us to SDPB. When the kids came, SDPB TV, Sesame Street, and all the children’s programs were a big part of our lives. That’s where the channel stayed, on both the TV and the radio.” Favorite SDPB programs: “PBS NewsHour, Masterpiece. I really enjoy SDPB2-The World. I watch that channel a lot! Local USA, Independent Lens, Religion & Ethics, Asia Insight, the short films and documentaries. Often when I’m watching something on SDPB2, I find a link online and forward to a friend.” How have SDPB programs enriched your life?: “It gives us a broader view and an awareness of the 20

Learn. Dream. Grow.

world. It’s just an eye opener. I find out there’s a whole different side to an issue. “ On supporting SDPB: “It’s just part of our lives. SDPB comes along with us and keeps changing as we change and age. We’re in our 70s now and in the early years there were the children’s programs and music. And now it’s more about knowledge.” How to keep SDPB strong for the next 40 years: “SDPB programs are more balanced. I think it’s important for every individual to educate themselves and be aware of the truth not just the rhetoric or what politicians tell you. It’s always good to find the facts and history. I would encourage everyone to support it because it would be hard to lose SDPB.”

Chuck & Ruth Olson, Watertown, SD Chuck is a retired businessman and Ruth taught English in Watertown for 43 years. They’re active in many organizations in Watertown, where they own an 1886 Victorian house. Favorite SDPB programs: “How much time do you have? (laughs) Masterpiece Mystery, Father Brown, Midsomer Mysteries, Great Performances, Ken Burns documentaries. We know Keeping Up Appearances and As Time Goes By by heart. I love Saturday afternoons: This Old House, Martha Bakes and America’s Test Kitchen.” How has SDPB enriched your lives? “The programs are very well done. Such a fine quality of acting, producing, and casting. They take place in other places, so we learn about other places. The biggest thing about SDPB is that you’re getting things you can’t get anywhere else, particularly in arts and culture.” How can SDPB remain strong for the next 40 years?: “High quality children’s programming is really important. As a teacher, I

think it needs to be educational and entertaining at the same time.” Why did you become founding SDPB members?: “We simply wanted to support really good, quality programming that you can’t get anywhere else. We need public broadcasting so much here – it’s a real vital need in our state.”

Bill Howard, retired M.D., Rapid City Favorite SDPB programs?: “Morning Edition first thing every morning. On the weekends it’s Weekend Edition and On Being. Driving in the car it’s Dakota Midday, Morning Classics, Marketplace. PBS NewsHour every night. I really enjoy the commentary – Gwen Ifill, Judy Woodruff, David Brooks, Mark Sheilds, Tamara Keith – it’s so interesting how these people become a part of you. Their commentary is the most objective that I hear.” How has SDPB enriched your life?: “SDPB covers so much information throughout the day I don’t see or hear anywhere else. I read the newspaper, I talk to people, and I watch the 9pm news – but there are things on public broadcasting locally and nationally that I just can’t find anywhere else. We’re bombarded with information, but SDPB has an efficiency. I can find out what’s going on in the world without extraneous stuff.” Why have you supported SDPB for 40+ years? “I want to maintain access to that information that connects me to what’s going on in the rest of the world. Lately I’ve been thinking, ‘What the heck would I do if I couldn’t turn on NPR in the morning?’ I’d be forced to listen to awful commercials and frivolous information that just doesn’t have the impact and quality. I have a level of confidence that SDPB does the screening for me for news that is truly newsworthy.”
