APRIL 2023

Welcome to April!

As the winter chill begins to thaw and the sun begins to shine a little brighter, the arrival of spring brings with it a renewed sense of hope and optimism. With longer days and warmer weather, people across the state look forward to enjoying the great outdoors and celebrating the beauty of the natural world.

As we embrace the changing of the seasons, it's important to remember the role that South Dakota Public Broadcasting plays in keeping everyone informed and connected to the world around us. From local news coverage to educational programming, public broadcasting provides a vital service to communities across South Dakota.

One of the key benefits of public broadcasting is the fact that it is free and accessible to everyone, regardless of their background or financial situation. This means that people from all walks of life can access high-quality programming on a wide range of topics, from current affairs and politics to culture and the arts. Take a moment to think about how SDPB has affected your life.

Public broadcasting also plays a vital role in supporting the education of young people. From children's programming to documentaries and educational series, public broadcasters offer a wealth of resources to help children and young adults learn about the world around them.

In an age where fake news and misinformation are rife, public broadcasting offers a beacon of truth and integrity. By providing impartial and accurate reporting on important issues, public broadcasters help to foster informed and engaged communities that can make a positive difference in the world.

So, as we welcome the arrival of spring, please remember the important role that public broadcasting plays in your life. Whether we are seeking news, entertainment, or education, public broadcasters provide an essential service that enriches our lives and strengthens our communities. We want to hear your story of how public broadcasting made an impact on your life. Email your story to friends@sdpb.org

Happy spring!

The Ghost Dance shirt

Those who followed the Ghost Dance Movement believed this religious dance would bring about the arrival of a Messiah, the departure of settlers, and the return of the buffalo. These shirts were believed to be so protective that even bullets couldn't penetrate them. One of the many who died during Wounded Knee Massacre wore this shirt. In the collection of the Museum of the South Dakota State Cultural Heritage Society - currently closed under renovation.

Wounded Knee Massacre Monument

This monument is located on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. The memorial is located on the site of the Wounded Knee Massacre of 1890, where nearly 300 Lakota people were killed. In 1965, the 870 acres where the event occurred was designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark and features a memorial panel and small cemetery.

St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church

"Cathedral on the Prairie"

Completed in 1921, Monsignor Anthony Helmbrecht hoped one day this prairie church in Hoven, SD might be a bishop's home, and while many have visited, not one has ever resided there. In the Jubilee Year of 2001, Bishop Robert Carlson declared it a destination for Catholic pilgrims. You can see the twin spires from miles away that rise 140 feet. This building houses a 1127 pipe organ and holds 21 stained glass windows.

The Sioux Horse Effigy

One of two known dance sticks in the world, this 3ft wood sculpture is made with authentic horsehair. The markings with red paint symbolize bullet holes and blood – indicating the horse died in battle. It was carved around 1875, most likely by a Sioux Warrior, to honor his own horse that might have been killed in action. It has toured museums in Paris, New York, and Kansas City. Located at the Museum of the South Dakota State Cultural Heritage Society

Spirit Mound

This prominent hill, located near Vermillion, has been described as the home of "evil spirits," or "little people," by the Plains Indians who thrived in this area. Told of this story, members of the Lewis and Clark expedition climbed the hill in 1804 and documented it in their diaries. The site is now protected as the Spirit Mound Historic Prairie and is one of the few places where you can walk in the footsteps of Lewis and Clark.

The Verendrye Plate

The Verendrye Plate is a lead tablet found in 1913 on a hilltop on the west side of the Missouri River at Fort Pierre. The plate was left on the hilltop in 1743 by the Verendrye brothers, French-Canadian explorers looking for a water route to the Pacific Ocean. It is the first known written evidence of a visit by Europeans to South Dakota.

The State Capitol Building

Located in the state capital of Pierre, this building is home to the offices of those in the legislature and most state officials, the Governor included. It was built from 1905-1910 by O.H. Olson and opened in 1910. It sits on 20 acres of land with a renaissance-revival architectural style. In 1989, this building underwent a 22-year renovation.

THE POMP ROOM: A ROCK N ROLL BAR STORy

When the Ertz family bought the pomp room in Sioux Falls in 1971, they had no idea what they had started. Their decision to focus on rock music featured thousands of bands - from the unknown to the world-renowned. And thousands more showed up to drink, dance, and become part of the pomp room family. FLASHBACK

SHANE VAN BOENING

We're celebrating 25 years of Dakota Life. Throughout this anniversary season, we'll revisit some of the people we've met on the show over the years. In 2014, Dakota Life featured Rapid City’s Shane Van Boening, widely considered to be one of the best pool players of all time.

Despite experiencing severe hearing loss since birth, Shane won the U.S. Open in 2007 and has gone on to win over one hundred professional pool titles. Known in the pool world as “the South Dakota Kid,” Shane is known for his attitude toward the sport, his behavior during matches and his stance against alcohol. We caught up with Shane during the World Pool Championships in Kielce, Poland, where he was busy defending his championship title.

: With all the accolades you have received and all the tournaments you have won, which are you most proud of and why?

Shane: The US open in 2007 is my first major tournament that I won. This is the event that I consider myself most proud of, along with the US Opens that I won in my career, 5-time US Open Champion.

SDPB: Do you see yourself as a role model? In what ways?

Shane: Yes, with my disability and ninety five percent hearing loss, I consider myself a role model. I can prove to the world, even with hearing loss, you can do anything you want in your life when you work hard, be dedicated, never give up and follow your dreams!

SDPB: What advice would you give to young people who want to become successful in their lives?

Shane: Work hard, don’t give up and most importantly, say no to drugs.

SDPB: You have travelled all over the world. What keeps you coming back to your home state of South Dakota?

Shane: South Dakota, home of Mt. Rushmore and Black Hills and some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. Less populated cities compare to other big cities in the US. I’m just not really a big city person. Sioux Falls and Rapid City are actually peaceful. And there are some really great fishing spots in South Dakota.

So Many Passwords!

So Many Apps!

If you are frustrated by the number of different usernames and passwords you have for various public media apps and websites, relief is here! Single Sign-On (SSO) is a process that permits a user to use one set of login credentials – username and password – to access multiple applications. You can now access your favorite NPR and PBS content — on all devices, and across PBS, NPR mobile apps and NPR One — using a single account. As you do so, you might run into a few issues. Here are answers to some frequently asked questions.

To take full advantage of SSO, it’s recommended that you choose one email address to use with both NPR and PBS, then use that account to set up your preferences across NPR and PBS websites and apps.

If you share your PBS Passport account with a family member and use that account when signing into NPR, you will be signed in with the PBS account. The same is true for the family member with whom you share the Passport account. Either of your individual NPR accounts can also be used to access PBS and NPR websites and apps, but those accounts will not be linked.

SSO requires stronger passwords. They now must have at least 8 characters and contain both letters and numbers. As a result, you may need to reset your password.

TECH

TIPS

Your Passport subscription will not be affected by SSO. If you have Passport, you will be able to enjoy your benefits the same as before.

Accounts that have not been accessed in more than one year will be deactivated. If you received a notification that an account for your email address does not exist, please create a new account. The process is very simple and takes only a few seconds.

If you have any questions or issues accessing PBS Passport, please visit: SDPB.org/passport/help

South Dakota Kids Count

Parents are a child’s first and forever teachers, and they want the best for their children. But, their time is limited. In fact, 74% of children in South Dakota under the age of 6 have all parents working, according to data from South Dakota Kids Count This can create challenges for families to provide early educational experiences for their children What if a community could support families during this vital time in their lives?

SDPB is finding ways to reach families where they are; in their communities with educational programming, interactive games, hands-on activities, and resources to help early learners prepare for school and life.

“Our community approach is to create early learning experiences that are fun, engaging, and accessible for children and their families wherever they are; at the grocery store, laundromat, or doctor's office,” says Marcy Drew, SDPB Education Director.

Three Principles to Improve Outcomes for Children and Families

The first principle is to support responsive relationships for children and adults. This can be as simple as giving families the language they need to have conversations about emotions

The second principle is to strengthen core skills for planning, adapting, and achieving goals. This can look like parents involving their kids in making grocery lists, and developing plans of what to do if the item they’re looking for is sold out

Places like laundromats and grocery stores will have areas with attractive displays, featuring trusted characters from SDPB and PBS Kids, with ideas for positive adult/child interactions, activities, and games related to the SD Early Learning Guidelines For example, families can sort and count socks together at the laundromat to practice math skills or go on a search for a variety of healthy foods at the grocery store

The third principle is to reduce sources of stress in the lives of children and families. Being in any public space for an extended period of time can be stressful and under stimulating for a child, which can also cause stress for the parent. What if there is a space designed to engage those kids?

Putting Principles into practice: Piloting the Program in Belle Fourche

According to Kids Count South Dakota, there are 847 children under the age of 6 in Butte County, and only approximately 10% of children are enrolled in licensed or registered childcare programs The combination of limited childcare availability, and nearly 75% of families in Butte County having both parents working, creates a ‘childcare desert’ and many barriers for families to expose their children to early educational opportunities

This makes Belle Fourche a prime location to pilot the program. Danielle Flom, Early Learning Specialist with SDPB, mother, and resident of neighboring Lawrence County, has first-hand experience of the barriers families face in exposing their children to early educational opportunities.

Getting Involved

If you are interested in learning more about the state-wide program effort or the Belle Fourche Pilot Community efforts, and how to get involved, please contact Marcy Drew at marcy.drew@sdpb.org or Danielle Flom at danielle.flom@sdpb.org.

“As a mom of a preschooler who also works full time, I do experience a level of guilt when I finally get time with my child. The time we have is usually shared with doing household chores; his experience of ‘tagging along with mom while we grocery shop’ doesn’t always align with what I hope he is learning at this age, ” says Flom

Flom’s experience has prepared her to spearhead the Pilot Community effort in Belle Fourche Flom has been working with numerous community stakeholders, economic development, and business owners to prepare to implement these new learning spaces.

“It’s been rewarding helping the ordinary parents, like me, who have so much to do and can’t squeeze everything in I’m excited that we are making early learners a priority in the community,” says Flom.

SUPPORTER SPOTLIGHT

Donations, big or small, all contribute to SDPB's continued efforts to inform and entertain the people of South Dakota. Whether they have been giving for a lifetime or a short while, every one of our donors lends a hand in our mission to provide education and knowledge to people in our state. Toby Uecker and Laura Hasselquist attest to this by saying it takes a village to maintain the connection SDPB and its viewers have.

"I started [giving] when I had no money," says Laura, "even in grad school, I still gave my $10, or however much, to the radio and the TV station because that was my primary source of information at that time." Toby shares why even a small amount counts, saying, "For me, the values of public broadcasting, like accessible education, informative journalism, and thoughtprovoking art, are important to me. We all have resources and limits to those resources. But where we put our resources matters, whether that's time or whether it's a donation that speaks about our values."

For Toby and Laura, SDPB is more than just a radio or tv. It is a bridge that brings together family and friends, both past and present.

Toby explains, "When I connect with public broadcasting, it reminds me of sitting in my grandparents' house in Custer and listening to All Things Considered, knowing when that poem comes on the radio that it's time to be quiet because Grandpa is listening to the news." Laura continues, saying, "It helps me feel connected to friends and family that are far away. You can think about all your friends and family listening to it as well. It's not just you; it's like that emotional connection."

Laura describes SDPB as versatile: "whether it's sports, music, information, a drama, it's all there." Toby suggests an apt descriptor might be expansive.

"South Dakota Public Broadcasting expands what we know and learn about; it expands our knowledge of the community and South Dakota". We are so thankful for our members like Toby and Laura!

New York's Adirondack Park is larger than Yellowstone, Yosemite, Glacier, Grand Canyon, and Great Smokies National Parks combined. It is one of the largest unbroken deciduous forests on Earth, with a thousand miles of streams and rivers, hundreds of lakes, and lofty peaks. A Wild Idea: The Birth of the APA chronicles the history of the park and the founding of the Adirondack Park Agency 50 years ago.

Nature The Elephant and the Termite

Witness the creation of the waterhole, one of Africa’s greatest wildlife meeting places manufactured by giant elephants and tiny termites. From baboons to dung beetles to chameleons, an entire community of creatures call the waterhole their home.

Masterpiece Sanditon

Jane Austen’s final and incomplete novel, written only months before her death in 1817, Sanditon tells the story of the joyously impulsive, spirited and unconventional Charlotte Heywood (Rose Williams) and her romantic journey. Watch Season 3 now!

DOC WORLD KEEP IT A SECRET

In 1972, every international sporting event in Ireland was canceled, except for one. Teams from around the world refused to travel to Ireland amid the height of The Troubles. Amidst the conflict of the Troubles, surf pioneers in both Dublin and Belfast transcended political hostilities to host the 1972 Eurosurf Championship. Keep It A Secret recounts the inspiring true story of the dawn of Irish surfing and how the sport’s brave pioneers found peace in the surf during the most violent years of The Troubles conflict.

SDPB2: Sunday, April 9, 9pm (8 MT)

Siblings may be the best of friends or rivals since the beginning, but no matter how much time has elapsed, their connection is like the pieces of a puzzle. Drew Prochaska’s brother, a scuba instructor, helps him overcome his fear of water; Mary Liz Nogueras and her family foster a young boy, only to realize his brother also needs them; and when Mary Ann Emerick develops an eating disorder, her sister steps in. Three storytellers, three interpretations of brothers and sisters, hosted by Theresa Okokon.
