One hundred years ago, electrical engineering students at the University of South Dakota were abuzz with excitement in Science Hall. What was happening was students and faculty learned the permanent broadcast license for their thenexperimental station was forthcoming in May. New equipment had been installed in the Physics room that would allow the transmission of actual sound, rather than the dots and dashes of Morse code they had been using until then. Sure enough, on May 20, 1922, listeners with a “crystal set” in a 150-mile radius of Vermillion heard the USD Band and a chorus of singers present a series of tunes. The first broadcast was successful. A large crowd in Pipestone, MN was reported to have gathered and listened over a loudspeaker. Postcards were received from around the area congratulating the station on its success. That station, which became KUSD, would over the next decades morph into a statewide network of FM radio stations that provides news, Jazz, Classical music, and information vital to citizens of South Dakota. Over the years we’ve broadcast lessons for students in one-room schoolhouses, lectures from professors, debates by politicians, read books from The Book Shop, and served as

a training ground for many future broadcasters and news people, including Tom Brokaw and Al Neuharth. One hundred years on, SDPB Radio continues. Commercial-free. And this April, just as in April 1922, the staff of SDPB is buzzing with excitement. We’re providing hundreds of hours of local programming and news from across the state and around the world. Our signal is available on-air, online, and through the SDPB app. We’re generating podcasts. We’ve received many Edward R. Murrow awards for Excellence. Ours are often the first voices you hear in the morning and the last you hear at night. Since the birth of what has become known as public radio, SDPB has relied on our listeners to provide the money to pay for the programming we provide. You can support the proud legacy of South Dakota Public Broadcasting by becoming a sustaining member of Friends of SDPB. Visit SDPB.org/Donate, call 800-333-0789, or use our QR Code. Larry's Playground Larry Rohrer is retiring. Don’t worry though – he’ll still be around! by Cara Hetland

“It’s just one big playground. And it’s fun!” That’s how Larry Rohrer summarizes his career in radio as a DJ, news director, program director, and 34 years with SDPB. Larry discovered his “playground” when he was reading announcements to his high school classmates and Mr. Stevens told Larry he had a good voice. After a class tour of a radio station, he started working part time at KELO AM early weekend mornings. It was a time where his only job was to introduce programs. He still remembers his first sentence ever spoken over the airwaves. “And now the Lutheran hour.” Introducing other people’s content wasn’t fun. Larry wanted to be a newsman. He turned in his two weeks’ notice with no plan, and with a week left, got a call to help at KXRB. Every staff member walked out, and they needed someone to keep them on the air. After a four-hour shift, he was asked to come back the next day. The owners were looking to replace everyone, and Larry jumped at the chance to do 4

news. After a few years, he was asked to interview for a job with UPI in Pierre. On his way home, his wife told him if he took the job she would see him on the weekends, and the owners of KXRB told him he might as well keep looking. “Everyone should get fired from a media job at least once in their career,” said Larry. He worked in auto sales for a while, but was drawn back to KXRB by new owners, this time as the program director. It was a golf game and BBQ with friends that nudged Larry toward SDPB. The hosts shushed them to listen to A Prairie Home Companion. Larry found the station in his car on his way home to finish the program. But it was the next morning on his way to work where Larry discovered Morning Edition. “I began timing my drive to and from work to catch Morning Edition and All Things Considered. I couldn’t get enough of it.” He saw an ad on public television that said public radio is hiring a scheduling and acquisition manager (aka program director). Larry was

hired December 12, 1988. It’s easy to say Larry has done pretty much everything there is to do at SDPB from covering parades and galas to top news stories, and leading pledge drives. He says he learned a life lesson that he still carries with him from listening to the Ralph Emery show. The guest was Moe Bandy and he asked Ralph if they were on the air because the guest couldn’t tell by Ralph’s voice. “A light bulb went on for me,” said Larry. “You have to be the same on radio or television as you are off the air. Just be who you are. I never forgot that moment, and I tried to do it ever since. That’s why I’m able to have so much fun. I’m just being me.” As technology began to change, Larry was in the middle of it. Out went cart machines and reel to reel machines, and in comes the digital automation and internet. “I learned that one of three families in the country had a home internet connection while two of three families identified NPR listeners had an internet connection at home. We secured

"If I had that voice, I'd never shut up" – Kevin Woster "He taught me how to take joy in my job" – Lori Walsh "We can throw practically anything at him, and he can do it" – Fritz Miller our first email domain – SDPB@ USD.EDU – and Julie Anderson Overgaard offered me director of online services, a new initiative at SDPB.” Larry suddenly found himself with a new and larger playground. He helped develop streaming from the legislature; he secured SDPB.org; and he instigated streaming and broadcasting of South Dakota High School Activities Association championships. “We promised we would do the work,” remembers Larry. “We’ve always been committed to what we do, and that’s to be of service.” Former SDHSAA Director Wayne Carney says Larry had a hard time saying no and figured out how to stream and broadcast every activity they sanctioned. “We kept adding more like soccer and cheer and dance and now soon it’ll be softball. But Larry believed if it wasn’t good for the state, it wouldn’t be done,” said Carney. It’s fun, not work, according to Larry. “We created something that hasn’t existed before, or we

"The kindest and most patient person I ever worked with" – Bob Bosse

adapted something and made it new in South Dakota. We’re able to make a good idea work here.” Creating new things and making them work makes Larry proud. He’s most proud of his leadership of South Dakota Honor Flight. “There were a thousand reasons and opportunities to walk away from that project. There were so many roadblocks, but we made it work, and it was my honor to be a part of it.” Larry oversaw 12 flights that transported 1400 veterans to Washington DC. “I feel like we made a difference.” Former Governor Dennis Daugaard said through this project, Larry “quickly earned my deep admiration and respect. Under his leadership, every SD WWII veteran who asked to participate was accommodated.” It’s the people and opportunities Larry says he’ll miss the most. But he’s not going far. Larry’s voice will still give you our top of the hour legal ID’s and corporate supporters. He will continue hosting Dakota Life and have a few other special projects.

His playground at SDPB is still open for his involvement but only around his scheduled tee times. There’s a new playground in retirement – this one has 18 holes.

Learn. Dream. Grow.

In April, Dakota Life visits Winner. The town of nearly 3,000 is the county seat of not just Tripp County, but also of neighboring Todd County which does not have its own county seat. Winner is the birthplace of Delores Taylor, co-creator and star of the Billy Jack movies. Tune in and learn more about this “Sportsman’s Paradise.”

Greetings from Winner

Dakota Life premieres April 7 on SDPB-1 TV.

Winner and baseball go back to the 1920s when the first town league was organized. In 1948, the Winner Athletics Association built the Leahy Bowl, named for Notre Dame football coaching legend -- and Winner High School standout -- Frank Leahy. Through the years, the Leahy Bowl has hosted the Winner Pheasants of the former Basin League, American Legion baseball, school, and Little League teams. SDPB goes deep into Winner's baseball history, introducing the leagues, teams and players that swung for the Pheasants…err...fences. How many towns with a population of less than three thousand maintain a movie theater and an active community playhouse? Winner has established itself as a prairie hub for the performing arts. We visit the people who light up stage and screen at the Winner Community Playhouse and Pix Theater. Yvonne Hollenbeck performs her original poetry throughout the United States, becoming one of the most published cowgirl poets in the West. Yvonne also writes articles about life in rural America in various publications throughout the country. We sit down with Yvonne and learn about poetry, quilting and life on the prairie of South Dakota. Watch Dakota Life Greetings from Winner Thursday, April 7 at 8pm (7 MT) on SDPB1-TV and throughout the month.

South Dakotans spend much of their lives in the Great Outdoors. Winner is no exception. The rolling hills and open prairies of Winner are ripe habitat. SDPB explores the pheasant hunting tradition in Winner.

The

Flood

This story is adapted from the forthcoming book “Surviving the ’72 Flood,” which features stories of 1972 Black Hills Flood survivors by SDPB’s Seth Tupper and portraits by Johnny Sundby, of Johnny Sundby Photography in Rapid City. The Black Hills flood of 1972 claimed the lives of 238 people, many of them along Rapid Creek in Rapid City.

The Baumberger family endured its share of adversity before the flood. Dave Baumberger narrowly survived a boyhood bout with mercury poisoning. His only sibling, a sister, died of a liver disease. But life was good in the spring of 1972. Dave was 20 and recently married. His parents, Roland and Margene, owned Flowers by LeRoy in Rapid City. They’d purchased a home along Rapid Creek above Canyon Lake, where they hoped to eventually retire. On the rainy night of June 9 that year, Dave’s dad asked for help pulling items out of the creekside house. The water was high enough that authorities were already blockading the Canyon Lake Bridge. Dave’s mom stayed on the other side of the creek in her car, on higher ground in the Blessed Sacrament Church parking lot. Dave, his dad, and a family friend walked across the bridge and waded into the low-lying Jackson Park subdivision. The floodwater was rising quickly by the time they made it to the Baumberger home, so they retreated to a neighbor’s house further from the creek. A couple and their three school-aged boys soon joined the group, raising the number of people in the house to nine. Everyone was starting to panic. 18

“The water was coming up in 3- or 4-foot increments,” Dave said. “It wasn’t just a steady, slow rise.” Soon the water was so high that the refrigerator began to float. Everyone in the house scrambled up into the attic, hoping it was high enough to stay dry. Then the house slipped off its foundation and started breaking apart. In the confusion that ensued, Dave climbed out a hole in the roof and into the flood. The current carried him into a tree, and he grabbed onto it. Dave watched another tree tip over and feared his tree would be next. When a lightning flash illuminated an inner tube floating nearby, Dave jumped for it and missed. He drifted into Canyon Lake and started swimming toward the shore. “And then the dam broke,” Dave said. “I knew because of the way the water just started rushing out.” He was sucked down through the spillway into the roiling, debris-filled current, where he couldn’t tell up from down. “There were three or four times I was below the water, and I figured that was it,” he said. “Then I’d pop up and get a breath of air.”

dozen others is now the Rushmore Lions Nature Park. Tragedy struck the family again in 2018 when Dave’s wife, Pam, died of cancer. Through it all, Dave has learned that life and death are beyond his control. “There’s something else out there that decides when it’s your time to go,” he said.

He bounced off trees like a pinball as the creek flushed him almost two miles downstream, where he somehow got near the edge of the water. A family stranded in the back of a pickup pulled him out, and he waited with them until the flood receded. The current had ripped away his shirt and left him badly bruised. Dave eventually learned that he and one of the young boys were the only survivors out of the nine people who’d been together in the house. A family friend identified the body of Dave’s father, Roland Baumberger, at a local funeral home. The gregarious businessman known as “Babe” to his friends was dead at just 50 years of age. Margene was left to mourn another death in the family, to surrender her damaged home to demolition, and to take responsibility for a business that was also damaged by the flood. “It’s not been an easy life,” Dave said. “It’s been tough on her for sure.” Margene never remarried. She continued to run the flower shop until the 1980s. As the flood’s 50th anniversary approaches, she’s in her 90s, still residing in Rapid City. An SDPB documentary including some of the interview subjects from the book is in production now, and SDPB’s “In the Moment” is airing audio clips from flood-survivor interviews each Wednesday until the 50th anniversary of the flood on June 9. May2022 2021 19 April

by Brian Gevik Visit almost any cemetery in South Dakota and you will likely see gravestones marking the final resting places of Civil War and Civil War-era veterans. Some were already in Dakota Territory when the war broke out in 1861 but the vast majority came after the war. By 1885, there were approximately 6000 Civil War veterans living in southern Dakota Territory. Only 60 are known to have served in the ranks of the Confederacy. Historians know perhaps more about these veterans than those in any other state. A special census conducted in 1885 collected a wealth of information about their locations, their home states or countries, and their military service during the War. Kurt Hackemer, a Professor of History at the University of South Dakota has studied and written about the census and says it’s the only one of its kind in the U.S. “What made the Dakota Territory census so unique was that it was a census that covered the entire territory, all the kinds of categories that one would expect.,” Hackemer said. “But the Territorial legislature inserted a special schedule into that census that was devoted to veterans and cataloging veterans. And what I like about their logic, they very deliberately included that schedule so that the memory of these veterans would be preserved for posterity. That was their intent.” 20

Learn. Dream. Grow.

The census shows where the veterans lived, where and when they served, and whether or not they had been wounded. Kurt Hackemer says the census data suggest that compared to what’s known about the war-time service of veterans living in other states, an unusually high proportion of the veterans who came to Dakota Territory fought in the war’s bloodiest battles. “They were far more likely to have been wounded than the majority of Union veterans, and they were far more likely to have experienced combat trauma than the majority of Union veterans. And by far more likely, we're talking about a factor of three,” Hackemer said. Some established themselves in colonies like the one in Gettysburg, South Dakota. Some, like Arthur Mellette, South Dakota’s first governor, were active in politics and became state-makers. Some had trouble re-integrating into the world they’d known before the war and came to the open spaces of Dakota Territory to escape and lead quiet lives far from the war-ravaged states in the East and South. SDPB

Supporter Spotlight

SDPB’s mission is to share content that educates, informs and inspires South Dakotans everywhere. To do this, we offer programming that expands the minds of children, documentaries that open new worlds, news programs that keep you informed on world events and cultures, and programs that bring the worlds of music, theater, dance, and art to your living room, all free of commercial interruption and influence. Your sustaining membership reduces costs, reduces printing, eliminates unwanted mail, and improves our ability to maintain a stable base of members. Why do people become sustaining members? The answers to that question are as varied as the people who support SDPB. We reached out to one of our newer sustaining members to get his take. Brandon and Elizabeth Van Westen became sustaining members in June last year. Brandon, who works for the City of Sioux Falls as Marketing and Communications Coordinator, explained “There are so many reasons why you should support SDPB. Above all, because it’s a good thing for the state.” Brandon is a fan of non-fiction shows and identifies closely with American Experience and Rick Steves programs. As a sustaining member, having access to these, and many other shows, on-demand through the PBS Video app and his streaming device, is another benefit. “As a lifelong South Dakotan, Brandon says SDPB was an important part of his life. Like many others he watched Mr. Rogers, Sesame Street and other educational programs. He adds “Growing up, Jazz Nightly was big with me and the ‘music nerds’ back in high school. I’d hang out with my band friends, and we used to listen to Jazz Nightly all the time.” “I try to support those things that I think are meaningful. I think that might be something for people of my age, in their thirties, to consider – supporting the inspiring, enlightening

Wagon Master:

Hansen's Hand-crafted History

“They don’t make ‘em like they used to.” That is a phrase that Doug Hansen takes to heart. Doug has been custom building and restoring ox, mule, and horse-drawn vehicles from the 1800s and early 1900s since 1978. He and his team make everything from scratch, using many original 19th-century hand tools and techniques that those who mastered this craft during the heyday of emigrant trails also used. It's an intensive effort, from designing by eye, to shaping the wood, blacksmithing the iron, upholstering, painting, and detailing. A Concord Stagecoach takes 1200 hours to build, no small feat. After a public screening at the Luxury 5 Cinemas in Mitchell on March 30 at 2:00pm, the new documentary titled Wagon Master: Hansen’s Hand-Crafted History makes its television debut on SDPB1-TV in April. The program is produced for the OregonCalifornia Trails Association by Knowledge Tree Films and funded, in part, by the South Dakota Humanities Council. SDPB1: Thursday, April 21, 8pm (7 MT) & Sunday, April 24, 1pm (noon MT)

Free Screening for

Saksanica The world premiere of a new Pioneer PBS documentary Saksanica will be held on Saturday, April 9 from 4 to 7:30 p.m. at the Omníciye Tipi community center at the Sisseton Wahpeton College in Sisseton. The screening event, which will feature music, discussion and a meal, is free and open to the public but preregistration is required by visiting www.pioneer.org/dress or calling 800-726-3178. The event is co-sponsored by SDPB, the Sisseton Arts Council and Dakota Wicohan. Saksanica features interviews with Gaby Strong, Pejuta Haka Red Eagle, Gabrielle Tateyuskanskan, Leah Thomas, Marcy Fiddler and Lonna Stevens as they discuss the materials, hand craft, adornments and cultural heritage contained within traditional Dakota and Lakota women’s dresses. Historical footage, scenes from contemporary Wacipi dances and the landscape of Minnesota river valley are woven into the documentary which airs Friday, May 27 at 9:30pm (8:30 MT) on SDPB-TV.

Memoriam:

Mark Shlanta

Mark Shlanta, the CEO of SDN Communications, died February 23, 2022 following a two-year battle with cancer. He was 57. In addition to his roles as businessman, husband, and father, Mark served as the chairman of the South Dakota Board for Educational Telecommunications. He was appointed in November 2003 by then Governor Mike Rounds. The Board for Educational Telecommunications oversees the licenses and operations of the South Dakota Public Broadcasting network. He became Chairman in January 2004 and remained in that role until he retired from the board in December 2020. “Mark will be remembered as a visionary businessman,” says Larry Rohrer. “But whether in a professional or personal setting, even on the golf course, Mark was humble and always considerate towards everyone around him.” Vernon Brown, SDN Communications’ Vice President of Marketing & Community Relations remembers: “Mark made his love and appreciation for SDPB clear to me early in employment at SDN. One of his earliest invitations to me and my wife was to join him, Peggy (and their newborn son Scott) at a live show of Wait Wait…

Don’t Tell Me at the Orpheum Theater here in Sioux Falls. Mark was giddy, especially since we got to meet host Peter Sagal after the show. He was even a bit star struck. Peter autographed the sponsorship sign that included SDN’s logo. That foam board sign was in Mark’s office until the very last day he moved his things out before Christmas.” “Everything Mark did was engineered,” continues Brown. “He loved to understand how things work; he remembered almost every detail; what he couldn’t remember, he had a spreadsheet for retention. Very much a left-brain personality. Yet, he had this deep appreciation for right-brained things like good writing, storytelling, and creating a community around that. He had an appreciation for and saw the potential in SDPB contributing to community. He loved how his technical engineering background could contribute to making SDPB work.” SDPB’s Executive Director Julie Overgaard said “For over two decades Mark Shlanta gave of his time and talents to further the mission of SDPB. He was a trusted Board member, friend, and mentor. His legacy and impact lives on through our improved local content and services. We will miss him greatly.” April 27 May 2022 2021 27
