MAKE YOUR MARK A BACK-TO-SCHOOL GUIDE

VOLUME 53 NO. 8

Happy August Friends, Welcome to the very first Editor's Letter! I, your editor, am thrilled to be writing this message to you. I'm Kylin, the new editor of the SDPB Magazine. I'm eager to use my passion for public media and storytelling to bring you information that will enhance your experience with SDPB. We'll use this space in the magazine to highlight what's going on behind the scenes and other information that might not fit in an article elsewhere.

EDITORIAL

This issue has pages filled to the brim with illuminating and entertaining information for our readers. Check out pages 4-5 for our feature article, Make Your Mark: A Back-to-School Guide, where we give tips to caregivers for getting their little loved ones ready for the new academic year. This issue also features a preview of the 25th season of Dakota Life where we reveal the communities we will feature in the months ahead. Each issue will feature one of nine towns that will receive coverage starting September 8th. The SDPB Magazine is a benefit of your membership in Friends of SDPB, just one of the ways we say thank you for supporting us and paying for the programs you rely on. With a new school year and a new TV season approaching, we are in full swing refreshing our work environment so we can provide new material for you every month. We hope you enjoy this issue as much as we enjoyed making it for you. Until next time!

Cheers,

MAKE YOUR MARK A B A C K - T O - SCH O O L G U I D E A new school year is fast approaching. For some people, this brings feelings of excitement and anticipation. Children are excited to be around their peers, caregivers are eager for new opportunities for their young ones, and educators are happy to have full classrooms again. These new beginnings may also be a source of nerves or anxiety. Kids might be worried about classes, parents might be nervous about their little ones starting school, and teachers might feel pressure around their responsibility as an educator. It is equally essential for caregivers and teachers to feel

equipped for the new year as it is for children. A good amount of school year nerves can be dimished just by taking some time before that first day to prepare yourself and the child in your life for new experiences and learning opportunities. Parents, guardians, grandparents, caregivers, teachers, and educators alike can walk into the school year feeling refreshed and prepared. A handful of simple steps can ensure that you and your loved ones are ready for whatever the school year has in store:

Get into routine early

Make a Visit

Practice scenarios

The first day, and especially the first week, of school, is so vital to setting the scene for the rest of the school year. Therefore, it is important to tackle a schedule beforehand. There is no magic schedule to making sure the household wakes up ready to go but adjusting to a consistent wake-up and bedtime sleep schedule can help you and your little ones wake up on the right side of the bed way before the school year even starts.

Even if your child is attending the same school as the previous year, setting foot in the school beforehand is a good opportunity to refresh or refamiliarize you both with the premises. This might look like a “Meet the teacher” event or a one-on-one if the teacher is available. Showing your kids the spots where you will drop them off, pick them up, and where their classroom will be can ease both of your nerves and make you feel safer with a game plan in place.

Younger children could benefit from practicing, as a family, interacting with other children and adults. Use dolls or other toys to simulate these interactions; this could include how to introduce yourself, how to ask someone if they want to play with you, how to share toys, and other scenarios.

Read books Read books where the characters are also going to school. This tip gives children a look into what they might expect when they enter the classroom and lets caregivers be present for questions or conversations kids might want to have before school.

Educational games and entertainment Incorporate learning into their day and give education a good impression before school even starts by turning on PBS Kids during the day for programs that challenge and expand their minds. If you prefer a learning experience that doesn’t involve the television, visit PBS online for a variety of games, readings, and worksheets. These educational moments can give you an opportunity to assist them in learning beforehand and get their brains up and running for the school year.

SDPB's team of Education Specialists work every day to provide useful resources to children of all ages. You can access that information online at SDPB.org/Learn and by signing up for the Early Learning Educational Newsletter. Whether you’re home-schooling or supporting your child in a traditional classroom, you can enter this season of learning with excitement, and a little help from your friends at SDPB. Visit PBS.org/parents for access to a wide range of resources from workshops and training for caregivers to interactive and educational games for kids.

25 years

Dakota Life has announced the South Dakota towns that will be featured in its 25th anniversary season.

The towns that will be featured in the 2022-2023 season of Dakota Life are:

Leola Sisseton Mission Parkston

Miller Lead Buffalo Howard

Belle Fourche

SDPB's flagship "magazine" television show will celebrate its silver anniversary with a renewed focus on sharing South Dakota's rural stories with a special emphasis on individual towns in each episode, a framework it created and expanded upon the previous two years. "We have built a model where we create relationships within each town and have the residents bring us the stories important to them," shared

Brad Van Osdel, Director of Entertainment for SDPB. "It's inspiring to visit with people from each of these towns and hear the passion and excitement they have for where they live. We hope to share that excitement with our television viewers." The new season of Dakota Life will begin production this summer and the first episode will air Thursday, September 8 with a new episode airing each month thereafter.

Share YOUR Story! We always welcome public input on what YOU think are the amazing stories, interesting people, and fascinating history of each town we visit. Contact brad.vanosdel@sdpb.org if you have any stories to share from one of the towns on our list! 11

Mysteries are happening on your Saturday evenings on SDPB! British productions are taking center stage as we shake things up to bring you two fresh shows. Your favorites are staying, but we’re adding some spice to the mix with Shakespeare & Hathaway and Death in Paradise.

Shakespeare & Hathaway

Death in Paradise

Private inspector Frank Hathaway has always worked alone. But Frank isn’t doing so well. He’s out of shape and low on cash. Frank needs a partner. Frank needs exhairdresser and people-person Lu. He just doesn’t know it yet.

Murders, mayhem and marvelous guests on the stunning Caribbean island of Saint-Marie! When a British Cop is found murdered in a locked room on this tiny paradise island, Detective Inspector Richard Poole is sent to investigate. He’s the perfect man to solve the case - if only he didn't just hate sun, sea and sand.

The two eventually join forces and form a highly unlikely and hugely entertaining detecting duo. Frank and Lu quickly discover that all is not as peaceful as it seems in their pretty theatre town. Vengeful lovers stalk the streets, the mayor is murdered and a magician’s trick fatally misfires. Frank and Lu must learn to trust each other, especially since their actor-receptionist is far too busy learning his lines. Welcome to Stratford-upon-Avon, where fact is stranger than fiction and low life criminals get caught up in deliciously high drama. SDPB1: Saturdays, 7pm (6 MT)

Ethel Hughes & Carol Duncan

SP O T L I GH T “it's amazing that you can go anywhere in South Dakota, almost anywhere in this state that has a lot of remote roads, farms, ranches. And if you keep hitting seek, you'll find public radio. That's a really huge service” says Carol Duncan.

A bond between a mother and daughter is truly special. Many of us have at least one thing—a family recipe, a movie, or hobby over which we can bond with our mothers. For Ethel Hughes and Carol Duncan, that bond is South Dakota Public Broadcasting. Ethel Hughes, 95 years old, has been a charter member of SDPB since 1976, and a supporter for many years before that. Ethel is a retired teacher from Stickney who has lived in Rapid City for many years. Carol Duncan, daughter of Ethel, grew up watching PBS because of her mother’s support and is now a supporter herself. “I don't know what I would do without turning on the radio in the morning,” says Ethel. “I just feel that it's an obligation for me. I get so much out of it.” Ethel describes SDPB as “allencompassing”, claiming there is always something on the radio or tv that she can trust to keep her informed while staying entertained. Her daughter, Carol, said if she had to describe SDPB in one word it would be relevant. “I think it's

there's something for everyone... there's a view on the world, the state and local communities, poets, musicians. I mean, it's amazing how it reaches into every life.” Carol is a longtime donor as well after growing up in a household that gave to SDPB, “It was always a presence in the house, so it seemed natural to continue that after leaving. And then when I became more of an adult and I had a job where I had to drive around a lot and I discovered public broadcasting on radio, and then I was hooked and then I became a supporter.” Ethel’s support was its own inspiration for Carol to be a supporter herself “We never sat down and talked about, you know, ‘I'm supporting so you better.’ Nothing like that. She made up her own mind and decided on her own.” Carol expresses both her individuality in her support of SDPB and her choice of programming, differing from her mother in the media she relishes. They both enjoy the Morning Edition and discussing episodes of Poldark. We truly are thankful for Ethel and Carol and their support of SDPB! 23
