Happy January, readers! All of us here at SDPB would like to extend a warm welcome to the new year. We are planning another year and another twelve issues of content that we hope our readers will enjoy.

A new year means new programming; head over to pages 13-19 for a list of our shows. This month's feature on pages 4-5 highlights a South Dakota man who loses what seems to be his greatest gift, his speech, but along the way, he finds different ways to utilize his extraordinary ability to connect with people. January also means the beginning of another 3-month legislatives session. Find information about how we will cover the statehouse in Keeping It Local, pages 6-7.

A Journey Through Diagnosis & Discovery SDPB is privileged to be entrusted to tell stories about the people, places and events that make South Dakota unique. Sometimes those stories are joyful and uplifting, and other times they tell a difficult truth. This month we share the story of a man who faced an awful prognosis, and about how he managed to make it a story of joy and resilience. Producers, videographers, journalists, and other SDPB staff are often taken on a journey that they hadn't expected when working on a documentary. Among producer Cara Hetland, host Lon Stroschein, and others, Jordyn Henderson worked as the videographer and editor for SDPB's newest documentary, Speechless. Jordyn offers his perspective of making this film. 4

"The documentary is about Tim Schut who lives with his family in Chester, South Dakota," says Jordyn. "While living in Sioux Falls at the peak of his career, Tim noticed difficulty in finding his words. He thought it was stress and changed jobs. The difficulty remained. After several months of doctoring and tests, he was diagnosed with Primary Progressive Apraxia of Speech (PPAOS), which is a degenerative brain disease causing you to lose the ability to speak. Known for his ability to talk and connect with the people around him, Tim finds this diagnosis extremely tough. This documentary is his story of facing the disease and continuing to connect with others without his 'superpower' of speaking." Tim wanted to be able to share his story while he was still able. Thus, Jordyn explains, this story came to our attention.

"We started this project shortly after Tim's diagnosis. He wanted to share his story while he still could. Tim reached out to his friends around the state, including friend from college, Lon Stroschein, and Friends of SDPB CEO Ryan Howlett, presented the idea to SDPB production staff. From there, I was selected as a videographer to shoot and edit the footage together." "Inspiring," "eye-opening," and "personal" are the words Jordyn used to describe this documentary and the process of making it. "Making the documentary was very taxing from an emotional standpoint," said Jordyn. The crew recorded in Aberdeen for two days, then went to Chester for more interviews. "That's when the band aid was ripped off quickly." Jordyn explains. "In those two days, we learned everything about Tim's personal life and how he and his family handled his diagnosis. Hearing him talk about his daughters pulled at my heartstrings, as I was a new father then. Putting myself in Tim's shoes with his diagnosis shook me to my core, thinking about my son. Every day I have worked on this documentary, I have needed time to rest mentally. I applaud Tim and his family as I cannot even imagine the emotions they go through every day." Jordyn hopes viewers will walk away with a new sense of never taking anything for granted after viewing this documentary. "The Tim you see on the screen is only ten percent of the Tim you would see face to face. Although his disease has taken a lot from him, he still connects with people around him. What Tim is doing and has done since his diagnosis is nothing short of heroic. He hasn't let it stop him from being who he is and showing up for people. Tim took this disadvantage and ran with it. He started support groups; he gave lectures; he's done all these things despite losing his speech. Neurologist Dr. Botha mentions that every disease needs a champion to bring awareness and people together. Tim is that champion."

Liberty City, Miami, was home to one of the oldest segregated public housing projects in the U.S. Now with rising sea levels, the neighborhood’s higher ground has become something else: real estate gold. Wealthy property owners push inland to higher ground, creating a speculators’ market in the historically Black neighborhood previously ignored by developers and policy-makers alike. Your support of SDPB and Friends is sincerely appreciated. Friends is the charitable arm of SDPB, with the mission of supporting SDPB through advocacy, leadership, and fundraising responsive to the needs of SDPB and all South Dakotans. Our vision is to link all South Dakotans through our common bonds and further build SDPB into one of the country’s premier public broadcasting networks. As you read this, we hope you take pride in the amazing work your gift helped to create. Without you, your gift, and the philanthropy of thousands of your fellow South Dakotans, the award-winning programming we highlight in this report simply wouldn’t be possible. Together, we told South Dakota’s stories: the uplifting ones, like the history of “The Pride of the Dakotas Marching Band” and the pioneering exploration of “The Ups and Downs of Herb and Jan Conn,” along with the difficult ones detailing the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women’s crisis and the alarming closures of retirement homes across the state. The Ups & Downs of Herb and Jan Conn

Herb and Jan Conn are Black Hills legends. Originally from the White Mountains of New Hampshire, they traveled the West after Herb's WWII-era Army service. Soon they fell in love with the Black Hills, built an off-the-grid cave dwelling, and set out to establish the Black Hills as a climbing destination. By 1959, having explored the surficial Hills, they were lured into exploring Jewel Cave, where only two miles of passage had been documented. Twenty years later, they had mapped more than 60 miles in what is now the world’s third largest cave system and helped establish the popular Scenic Tour. The work they started continues. Over 200 miles now have been discovered. Herb and Jan Conn inspired others in many ways beyond their pioneering work as climbers and cavers. The Ups and Downs of Herb and Jan Conn documents their ascents and descents, and the exploratory, literary, cartographic, artistic, and musical repertory they created -- all of which continue to inspire people with an itch to explore, above or below the surface. Justin Koehler, producer of Ups & Downs, moved back to South Dakota last year after being gone for almost 20 years. Since partnering with SDPB, he has produced films capturing life of South Dakotans and the state’s history. "When SDPB approached me to edit the Conn documentary, I was a bit embarrassed to say that I had never heard their story. However, it took about five minutes of research to understand why their story was worthy of the big screen,” Justin said. “I admire Herb and Jan's sense of adventure and fearless approach to climbing and caving; both sports in their infant stages when the Conns started. Even if the Conns didn't want to be labeled as such, their peers view them as pioneers, and to be among the first to do anything takes a tremendous amount of courage— but it takes a lot of intellect, as well."

Blasius Family Rodeo

The Blasius family captures the heart of South Dakota through their community involvement. Brett and Paula and their children Lane, Josie, Blair, Burk and Jace all participate in the rodeo, a tradition started by their dad. Along with the rodeo, the family plays numerous sports. Their sons are involved in wrestling and football, and their daughter played basketball and volleyball. Blair (19), Burk (17), and Jace (16) all played for the same football team in 2022 when Wall won the 9AA State Championship. They also have taken home state championships in wrestling. The busy schedules require structure and a strong family bond. “Balancing three sports is tough,” Blair explains. “They all don’t fall at the same time, but they’re one after another. It’s football in the fall, wrestling in the winter, and rodeo in the spring and summer. But I wouldn’t trade it for anything, even though it’s stressful at times. It’s a lot of fun, and I know I’ll look back and smile.” Brett shares what it is like for him as a parent. “It’s sure challenging with these boys being multi-sport athletes. We get stretched pretty thin from time to time, but we try to keep it all in perspective. Faith is important to us, next comes family, and then fun. So, we try to approach it that way. It’s challenging, but we do the best we can.” While the family focuses on hard work, good grades and connection, their faith is the foundation of their closeness as a family and is at the family’s core. “We believe that our faith is most important,” says Brett. “Things don’t always go perfect, and sometimes things go great. In the good times and the challenging times, we just have got to have strong faith and believe it’s for a reason and keep charging forward. Our faith is strong. It’s behind everything we do.” The Blasius family is an inspiration, as a close-knit and involved South Dakota family. My hope for all my kids, number one, is that their faith base is solid,” Paula said, “to continue that, get through school, meet the right person, raise a family, and make a difference in this world. That’s what my hope is for my kids.”

3. South Dakota Public Broadcasting won two regional Edward R. Murrow Awards for Small Market Radio Reporting in 2022. Murrow Awards are awarded by the Radio Television Digital News Association. SDPB won two awards: Continuing Coverage of the Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg Impeachment, produced by Lee Strubinger, and News Documentary for Dave Eggers Discusses His Book Being Prohibited by Rapid City School District by producers Lori Walsh, Carl Norquist, and Chris Laughery. Lori Walsh, In the Moment host, shares what the Murrow Awards are and why they are significant. “At their core, the Murrow Awards recognize broadcast and digital journalism that serves the community. The regional Murrows have the enhanced ability to recognize local journalism of note.” Lori continues, “The Murrows matter because they invite further attention to an important story. The In the Moment team strives to bring meaningful interviews and reporting to the widest audience possible. A regional Murrow means more listeners will hear those South Dakota voices and think more deeply about the impact of our lives and our conversations.” Lori explained there was a feeling of gratitude for the team when the award was announced. “The In the Moment team moves swiftly to get a thoughtful, meaningful show on the air daily. When the Murrow Award arrived in the newsroom, it was an opportunity to pause, reflect, and express gratitude to team members, not only for their craft, but for their dedication to sharing South Dakota stories. Then we moved on to the next show!” SDPB is a team of people who work hard to provide materials for education and information to our state; Lori and the In the Moment team are no exception. Lori shares more about the documentary that won the award. “Our team was recognized in the radio documentary category. We explored the impact of book challenges in the Rapid City School District and featured best-selling author Dave Eggers in conversation with members of the Rapid City community. It was a spacious dialogue about censorship, book destruction, and the First Amendment. The story of who decides what books our high school students have access to is nuanced and has profound implications for education and American democracy. We hope that particular show’s lineup helps inform and inspire people in their own conversations about the meaning of freedom as it intersects with the rights of readers.”

SDPB LEARN Education is SDPB’s foundation. Long before Sesame Street premiered on November 10, 1969, SDPB was providing programming on TV and Radio for learners of all ages, dating back to the 1930’s and 1940’s. That tradition continues. Videos created by SDPB are available online on YouTube and PBS LearningMedia where they are accessed thousands of times annually by teachers, homeschoolers, daycare providers, students, and life-long learners. Working with artist and South Dakota icon Dick Termes, SDPB’s “Art Basics with Dick Termes” video series is a gathering point online for children and adults. New content for educators and teachers is added to PBS LearningMedia every month, and our Education Team connects with over 3,000 parents and educators in a weekly e-newsletter that shares educational activities, videos, and lessons that are aligned with South Dakota Content Standards. Using the e-newsletter as a communication tool, the SDPB Education Team released in May a “Create Your Own Dance Studio” video series. This three-part series helps keep children active while incorporating math and creativity to encourage critical thinking and imagination.

In addition to providing relevant education materials, the team work one-on-one and in groups offering educators professional development opportunities. They taught parents how to share SDPB resources with their children and provided under-resourced schools with access to materials. Between July 2022 and June 2023, the Early Education and K12 Team attended more than 20 events. Professional development events for educators included the STEM ED Conference in Huron, the Lakota Nations Ed Conference in Rapid City and a statewide homeschool conference. The team was at events geared toward children, including the Summer Academy at Hawthorne Elementary in Sioux Falls and the Youth & Family Services Kids Fair in Rapid City. Hundreds of teachers and thousands of students are impacted daily by the resources the SDPB Learn team makes available, free thanks to support from Friends of SDPB members.

SUPPORTER SPOTLIGHT Arts South Dakota is a "non-partisan and non-profit service organization that advances the arts for South Dakotans and our visitors by connecting, advocating, and educating," according to their executive director Jim Speirs, who sat down with us to tell us more about their organization. "We are a service organization that serves the arts community across South Dakota," says Jim, "we provide public awareness, networking, professional development, and advocacy for the arts within public policy, in the state legislature, in Washington, D.C. and even on the community level. We want to create a unifying voice for the arts across the state." Their mission to connect, advocate, and educate is why we are proud to partner with them; we share that similar goal. "Both of our organizations share a goal of celebrating and highlighting arts and culture in South Dakota," says Jim. "We both believe in the importance of the arts in our state and want to make that a part of our story. The other connection we have is geography. There are very few organizations, especially within the arts sector, that truly serve all of South Dakota and all native nations. We want to reach those same people."

Jim describes public broadcasting as "indispensable," claiming without it the state would be missing a voice that unifies us both in terms of character and geography. "South Dakota Public Broadcasting is essential to our state and nine native nations within South Dakota. It is an essential voice, an essential service that captures the story of South Dakota. I don't know of any other media organization that truly captures the entire breadth, not just geographically but also characteristically, of all of South Dakota and tells our story. It's essential that we support this organization." Arts South Dakota, like SDPB, is working hard to accomplish its goals. Our supporters make that a reality, both on an individual and organizational level. Jim continues, "Arts South Dakota exists because people believe in our mission and want to support and help our mission. It's the same for public broadcasting. Without public and business support, like what we do, the organization wouldn't exist, and there would be a major missing piece in our state: A missing voice."
