SDPB MAKING THE

ake a moment and imagine: it’s about 1910 in Canton, South Dakota. Two young boys – Ernest and Merle -- live across the street from one another. They are fascinated with resuscitating dry cell batteries and refurnishing burned-out motors. They pepper the son of the local telephone company who just graduated from MIT with questions about volts, ohms, and amps. Within a few weeks, the two friends have linked their two homes by telegraph. They exchange messages about their daily goings-on, gossip, and the hopes and dreams often shared by two young men. This wired connection was easy for them and eventually, they added a third home, Ernest’s cousin Ollie. Ernest is Ernest O. Lawrence who won the Nobel Prize in Physics (1939) whose father, Carl, taught Latin at the Lutheran Augustana Academy. Merle is Merle Tuve, the son of Anthony Tuve, who was president of Augustana. Merle would become founding director of the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, and a pioneer in the use of pulsed radio waves whose discoveries opened the way to the development of radar and nuclear energy.

New job opportunities for the parents led to the two friends to move apart. Eventually the boys moved back to Canton, but not across the street from one another. Merle offered the solution – wireless. Anthony Tuve had purchased some equipment for a boy scout project that went unappreciated, so the nearly complete set of wireless gear was available for the boys to experiment with. Soon they were not only communicating with each other across the city of Canton, but they were also communicating with people from as far away as the coasts of the United States. In fact, the citizens of Canton learned of America’s declaration of war against Germany in The Great War of 1917 through reports received by Ernest’s wireless set-up. Ernest Lawrence graduated from Canton and attended the University of South Dakota, and that’s where the seed for what became SDPB Radio was planted. The history for all Public Broadcasting in South Dakota traces its roots to KUSD-AM. This station was one of the oldest educational radio stations in the United States and the flagship station of
what was to become the South Dakota Public Broadcasting Network. The station began on the USD campus in Vermillion in 1919 as an “Experimental Wireless Station” in the USD College of Engineering. Sophomore student E. O. Lawrence and USD Dean Lewis Akeley were largely responsible for putting this historic station on the air. The station held several licenses and was assigned various call signs in the early days. The first license for regular voice programming was granted on May 27, 1922. All transmissions were in Morse code prior to 1922. The first music and voice transmission from the station occurred on May 29, 1922. This live concert was a vocal quartet accompanied by piano and originated on the stage in the old chapel in University Hall (now called Farber Hall in the Old Main building). The station began a regular schedule of programming in 1924. Shows included music, speeches, debates, and play-by-play reports of basketball games. The South Dakota Interscholastic Basketball Tournament at Mitchell in May of 1925 was carried by relaying the play-by-play from Mitchell to Vermillion via an amateur radio station near the campus, then sent by telephone to the studios where the game returns were broadcast – the program was received in Yankton where loudspeakers were set up on the street corners.
member stations when National Public Radio launched All Things Considered with a 24-minute sound portrait of protests against the Vietnam War that took place that day, May 3, 1971. As part of the university system, hundreds of students studied and attained a career in the media. Those graduates include engineers, announcers, reporters, and people of all stripes – from people who listeners of small-town local radio station rely on for their daily digest of news and information, to people like Al Neuharth and Tom Brokaw.
In the building of SDPB, a few things still ring true today – we exist to make a difference in the lives of people through education, entertainment, and news and information. We continue to build on the legacy that a century of lessons have taught us and look forward to the next hundred years with the same excitement and wonder that young Ernest and Merle experienced.
In 1931 the station began its “School of the Air” educational programming for use in the classroom and elsewhere – this continued into the early 1960’s and was the precursor for the later presentation of educational television programming for use in schools. The School of the Air allowed students in one-room schoolhouses the opportunity to receive lessons in language, music, and civics that teachers in these remote schools weren’t equipped to offer. Programming on KUSD continued with a mix of educational programs, news, music shows, and sports coverage. Through appropriations from the state legislature dating back to 1949 towers and transmitters allowed for upgrades and eventually the building of a network of FM radio stations that cover virtually the entire population of the state. Always an educational, commercialfree station, what is now known as SDPB Radio was one of the charter July 2022

Crazy follows Eric, a diagnosed schizophrenic, faced with a critical choice — whether to comply with traditional mentalhealth treatment or follow his own path to wellness. Eric’s doctors want to medicate him for his own protection, but after eight years of anti-psychotic meds, Eric wants to refuse the drugs he believes cause more harm than good. With extraordinary access to Eric and his doctor, the documentary explores both sides of the story. Crazy reveals an intimate portrait of the unpredictable and high-stakes trajectory of Eric’s journey.

Hidden Brain is moving to Saturday at 1:00pm Central, noon Mountain. The show explores the unconscious patterns that drive human behavior and questions that lie at the heart of our complex and changing world. Host Shankar Vedantam talks about the inspiration behind Hidden Brain: “There are two kinds of explorers. One travels to exotic lands, ventures where no one has gone before. The other kind of explorer revels in discovering the surprising and the extraordinary in the mundane and every day. For as long as I can remember, I have been fascinated by this second kind of exploration. Nothing delights me more than to hear an insight that transforms what I think I know already, that reshapes how I see the world, that shows me the extraordinary in the ordinary.” Every episode of Hidden Brain aims to help people get to know themselves a little better, to think of their inner worlds with less judgment and more curiosity.

SDPB SUPPORTER SPOTLIGHT
Leola-area Residents Support SDPB Since1988 When asked why they support South Dakota Public Broadcasting, Janice Jasmer enthusiastically answers “Satisfaction! We feel good about supporting [SDPB].” That satisfaction runs deep for Janice and her husband Richard Jasmer. They have been members of Friends of SDPB for 34 years. The Jasmers are retired farmers who live on a Century Farm outside Leola, so they appreciate the ability to listen to and watch SDPB in their quiet corner of the state. Leola, the Rhubarb Capital of the World, is in northeast South Dakota about 30 miles northwest of Aberdeen as the crow flies. Additionally, both Richard and Janice worked as educators. Their background in teaching reinforces their reason for supporting SDPB. "Well, being a junior high science teacher, teaching life science and earth science, I love your science-oriented shows like NOVA and Nature," explains Richard. “And I really enjoy your featuring small communities [on Dakota Life] now because it lets us get to know the communities around the state and different things about them where we go to visit and be something that we look for." We caught up to Richard and Janice at a campground outside Sioux Falls where they enjoyed a visit from a couple of their many grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. Those future generations are in mind when they talk about their support of SDPB.
Janice and Richard Jasmer enjoy some time with their grandchildren.
“I always enjoy watching All State Music because I was a music major for a while and we have grandchildren that were in those,” says Janice. “And so, it's on every year. It's fun to keep an eye on those. The grandchildren, of course, love the kids’ programs. So, when they come to our house, we see some of those [programs], too.” Richard continues: “I think it's just a good public media. You know, it gives everybody that wants to get involved and gives them a chance to help support our state. Because you do emphasize a lot of different things around the state.” Since they first decided to support SDPB Janice Jasmer has had no regrets. “We like to give back and supporting SDPB is a way of doing that. We're very particular who we support. We want them to be good and productive. And we feel like South Dakota Public Broadcasting is. We appreciate that.” Your membership in Friends of SDPB pays for the programs and outreach that South Dakota Public Broadcasting offers. If you’re not already, become a member. If you give annually, consider becoming a monthly sustainer. Share in the satisfaction that people like Richard and Janice Jasmer receive by supporting a worthwhile resource.

Summer is here!
By Dr. Marcy Drew, SDPB Director of Education
The celebration of the end of the school year and the excitement about the beginning of summer can quickly be followed by children repeating “I’m bored” throughout the day. Adults are left wondering how to keep them engaged and learning. Summer is an excellent time for all of us to learn and play together. There are many ways to make this a summer of possibilities for kids of all ages! Explore the Outdoors! You don’t have to go far to discover things in nature that children find fascinating. A visit to the backyard, a trip to play at the local park, or a walk around the block can become a treasure hunt or I Spy game. Help children decide what you might search for (flowers, insects, trucks, red things, noisy things, etc.). Children's level of fun and interest will rise as they experience decision-making and a leadership role. Ask questions about what they see, hear, smell, and touch, encouraging them to use their senses to experience the world. To extend this activity, bring along a bag to collect their treasures, a digital camera to take photos, or a notebook to write or draw their observations.
Outside fun for indoor kids Some people prefer activities that traditionally happen inside, so find ways to bring their favorite things outside. Set up a blanket or hammock in a shady spot for reading or listening to music. Make a fruit salad at a picnic table or teach older kids how to use the grill and enjoy preparing and eating food outdoors. Bring their favorite toys outside for building or pretending in a new environment. Fresh air and nature will inspire every artist, so help set up an outdoor area for drawing, painting, chalk art, or sculpting with clay or playdough.
Visit https://www.sdpb.org/learn/ learnersconnection/ to get more ideas for joyful summer learning. There you can explore science, nature, and drawing while earning fun badges from Plum Landing or learn how to make bird feeders and ants on a log from Full Time Kid videos. Find “hands-on science for your backyard and beyond” with Science-U. Gather the whole crew to watch and learn during Family Night with PBS Kids and tune in to SDPB weekdays in August for Camp TV, a fun and educational day camp experience at home for students ages 5-10.
Bring the outside in We all need a break from the sun occasionally, but there is plenty of fun and learning to do inside during summer. Use those items collected on your treasure hunts to make nature collages or leaf rubbings. Write a story or make a video describing your walk in the park or trip to the swimming pool to send to a friend or relative. Get out the dress up clothes and pretend you are on a safari or visiting a tropical island.
