Recorded on spectacular locations on the scenic island of Malta, Great Performances Andrea Bocelli: Believe brings you a concert performance of music from Bocelli’s stunning new album featuring classic favorites, including “Gratia Plena,” a previously unreleased song by Italian composer Ennio Morricone from the acclaimed film Fatima, and a duet with Cecilia Bartoli, along with new interpretations of “Ave Maria” and Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.”
Join country superstar Wynonna Judd and her band at her place just outside Nashville as they perform classics, old hits and new selections. South Dakota guitar players share passion and pointers for their instruments.
“I love my old guitar like God loves the poor” -Merle Haggard, “More than My Old Guitar” by Brian Gevik
Throughout June, SDPB presents a series of short videos that reveal what guitar professionals appreciate about their chosen instrument. Old Guitars and the Local Musicians Who Love Them features artists performing on acoustic or electric guitars, talking about their favorites, and demonstrating the unique

qualities and sounds that their favorite instruments can produce. They also talk about the tangible and intangible things that led them to prefer one brand or model of guitar over another. Experienced guitarists may find the artists’ insights enlightening. Beginning guitarists will find them encouraging. Michael Hilson was born in Yankton and is a guitar instructor in the music department at the University of South Dakota. He’s also a performer fluent in several genres, including classical and jazz. Hilson talks about learning to play the guitar and says that although a high-end guitar won’t automatically make anyone a better player, the difference in sound between topquality and second-tier instruments can be striking. “You know, when suddenly you have a great instrument in your

hand it’s like, ‘Oh. That’s what they’re supposed to be like,’” says Hilson. But, he says, there are a lot of comparatively good guitars on the market that don’t cost a lot of money. Student guitarists just need an instrument that’s playable. “I think that’s something that I really thought about a lot when I was selling guitars,” says Hilson. “You don’t want to handicap someone, right? It’s hard enough. I mean your fingers are going to get sore, you’re going to be frustrated with the sound that you’re getting, so if you have an instrument that’s just not playable by a good player, why would you give that to a beginner?” Hilson also discusses some of the digital technologies now available to guitar players and how they have or haven’t changed music and musical performance. The series will also feature performances on several of the guitars collected and preserved by the National Music Museum in Vermillion. Arian Sheets is the Curator of Stringed Instruments with the Museum. Sheets talks about the history of guitar manufacturers like Martin and Gibson, describes guitar materials, design and construction, and explains the significance of certain guitars in the evolution of folk, jazz, rock, and other guitar-centric music. “There are people who absolutely believe that the vintage instruments have the best sound,” Sheets says. “What it’s probably more like is that it’s a sound that we get used to — we’ve heard these very great musicians within a few years of when these instruments were made. That’s what was available at the highest end of the line and so that sound, albeit a very good sound, is just something we get used to.”
Arian Sheets, Curator of Stringed Instruments at the National Music Museum.
Sheets also believes that we are in a golden age of instrument-building and quality. New technologies allow very precise and uniform construction, so as long as manufacturers use good quality materials, they’ll continue to produce high quality and relatively low-cost guitars. But there will always be a market for vintage guitars. “I couldn’t say that these instruments are better (than new instruments),” Sheets said. “They’re just, again, going back to the idea of the classics. They’re something that people are used to and something that they associate with the best music in the genres they were played in.” Images of the Past Old Guitars and the Local Musicians Who Love Them premieres in June on SDPB.org/music.

Written by Tom Dalton, this British alternative history drama explores how crime writer Agatha Christie became embroiled in a real-life murder case during her 11-day disappearance in 1926. The film depicts Christie investigating the murder of Florence Nightingale’s goddaughter and reveals how her involvement in the case influenced her subsequent writing. Agatha and the Truth of Murder uses elements of classic detective novels and contains references to Christie’s books, such as The Man in the Brown Suit, which appeared as a headline in a newspaper clipping. The murder of Florence Nightingale Shore and the character of Mabel Rogers are based on real people and events. SDPB1: Sunday, June 6, 8pm (7 MT)

June: Rodeo
In June, SDPB Spotlight shines a light on South Dakota’s rodeo traditions. From the people and places that make up the rodeo traditions, to the State High School Rodeo Finals in Fort Pierre, to the politics behind the construction of the new livestock complex and rodeo arenas in Huron.
July: Summer School Civics Lesson
Connect with SDPB and your neighbors about topics that matter to South Dakotans with SDPB Spotlight. Each month SDPB invites you to lend your perspective and experience to conversations that help us all better understand the history, issues, and events that impact South Dakota’s communities.
In July, SDPB Spotlight takes you to summer school. We will find out what our students are learning in school civics classes, have a few tests of our own, and find out how curriculum is set by school boards across the state.
April & May 2021: Guns in South Dakota & Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) In April, SDPB discussed “Guns in South Dakota,” including gun policy, sportsmanship, and mental health in the aftermath of gun violence. In May, SDPB Spotlight featured personal stories and developments for increased advocacy and awareness for “South Dakota’s Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW).” See those stories and more at SDPB.org/Spotlight. We want you to be part of the story. Share your story by leaving a voicemail at 605-951-0740. Join the broader conversations throughout each month on SDPB’s In the Moment, South Dakota Focus, and at SDPB.org/Spotlight.

A new signature segment on In the Moment with Lori Walsh dives into South Dakota’s literary heritage with a look at the state’s iconic, lesser known, and even quirky literary offerings. You’ll learn fresh perspectives on venerable tomes, like Ambrose Bierce and the Black Hills by Paul Fatout, which SDPB’s Seth Tupper discovered at the Rapid City Public Library. Published in 1956 by the University of Oklahoma Press, Fatout’s book recounts Bierce’s role in 1880 as general agent for the Black Hills Placer Mining Company, headquartered in Rockerville. Fatout’s research into Bierce’s correspondence gives insight into Bierce’s frustrations, but also provides maps and diagrams of places Tupper hikes today. Listen, learn and add to your South Dakota Bookshelf. Catch In the Moment weekdays at Noon (11am MT) on SDPB Radio and SDPB.org. Have a book suggestion? Email us at inthemoment@sdpb.org or lori.walsh@sdpb.org.
A new PBS series explores the evolution of our understanding of mental illness and its treatment. One in four people will experience a mental illness at some point in their lifetime. Yet a diagnosis of a mental disorder can still carry a stigma that a heart condition or other physical ailment doesn’t, largely because mental illness has been so poorly understood for so long. Mysteries of Mental Illness places the stories of those living with mental illness today in a broader historic, scientific and social context over four powerful, hour-long episodes. Through intimate, personal profiles, the series traces how our understanding of mental illness has evolved from an ancient conception of spiritual affliction to the latest neurobiological breakthroughs. At a time when mental health has been thrust to the fore by COVID-19, Mysteries of Mental Illness provides an invaluable framework to create deeper national understanding and dialogue. SDPB1: Tuesday, June 22 Episode 1: Evil or Illness? - 8pm (7 MT) Episode 2: What’s Normal? - 9pm (8 MT)
SDPB1: Wednesday, June 23 Episode 3: The Fall and Rise of the Asylum - 8pm (7 MT) Episode 4: The New Frontiers - 9pm (8 MT) June 2021

David Attenborough narrates the story of Rodrigo Medellin on Nature The Bat Man of Mexico. Since he first kept vampire bats in his bathroom as a child, Rodrigo has dedicated his life to saving them. Now Mexico’s most famous export, tequila, is at stake. Rodrigo’s beloved lesser long-nosed bat is crucial to the liquor - pollinating the plants the drink is made from. To save both, Rodrigo must track the bats’ epic migration across Mexico - braving hurricanes, snakes, Mayan tombs and seas of cockroaches. The threats are very real for not only Rodrigo and the bats, but also for anyone with a taste for tequila. SDPB1: Wednesday, June 30, 7pm (6 MT)

SDPB and NPR are asking South Dakota’s unsigned bands and musicians to submit their Tiny Desk Contest entries at NPR.org/tinydeskcontest. 2021’s panel of judges is phenomenal. Linda Diaz, NPR’s talented 2020 Tiny Desk Contest winner, will be part of our lineup — plus fellow extraordinary Tiny Desk alums Tobe Nwigwe and Phoebe Bridgers. Since 2014, South Dakota’s emerging musicians have submitted videos to NPR’s Tiny Desk Contest in the hopes of being chosen to perform as part of NPR Music’s signature music discovery series. The winner will play on NPR Tiny Desk. NPR and SDPB will share standout entries on SDPB’s and NPR Music’s Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. NPR will feature standouts on the “All Songs Considered” blog and in mashup videos. After the contest, each judge will share their favorite entries, and even interview artists like you, on the Contest Top Shelf: a weekly series and on the NPR Music YouTube channel. Locally, South Dakota musicians who enter may be featured as local favorites on SDPB Radio’s live music segment “Moment in Sound” on In the Moment with Lori Walsh, as well as on SDPB.org and SDPB social media, and in SDPB Magazine.
South Dakota Artists Among Select Musicians Featured on NPR.org In 2020, two Tiny Desk Contest submissions from South Dakota artists were featured on NPR.org. Mato Wayuhi & Treehorse, “Knots” Sioux Falls-based Mato Wayuhi (a member of the Oglala Lakota nation) and guitarist Jacob Lemme score again as NPR Music selected their 2018 “Wildberry Poptart” as a Tiny Desk Contest standout. Slinky, chill, rap-R&B with smooth horns and synth, “Knots” melds musicians recorded in-quarantine from L.A. to Philadelphia, but South Dakota ultimately represents: “Yeah, I’m turnin’ Pine Ridge into Fashion Week / Native Americans are the world’s greatest masterpiece.”
Eliza Blue, “Let There Be Light” Filmed at dusk atop the rolling prairie hills of her family’s small ranch near Bison, S.D., Eliza Blue’s “Let There Be Light” and its gently swelling call to better days is a soothing pandemic panacea. Singer/ songwriter/banjo player Blue recorded her last album (South Dakota, First of May) with former Neil Young’s Crazy Horse bassist and unlikely fellow Bison-dweller Billy Talbot. In this video, she strums her acoustic guitar and sends her clear, bright vocals out in hope across Middle America.
A few reminders about the Tiny Desk Contest: • Entries accepted through Monday, June 7, at 10:59pm CT. • You must be an unsigned musician and at least 18 years old to enter. • To enter, record a video of yourself playing one original song at a desk (any desk will do!) and upload it to YouTube. • Enter by submitting your entry to npr.org/tinydeskcontest. The winner will play their very own Tiny Desk Concert! 18 18

Bob Bosse, Director of Television, Retires from SDPB After 23 years with SDPB, Bob Bosse is retiring. Bob joined SDPB in late 1998 as an Associate Producer. From that starting point, he became Producer and in 2002 was named Director of Television. Bob reflects on how SDPB has changed throughout his tenure. “I’ve seen incredible expansion throughout the network, especially in production capability, video systems, on-air playback systems, channel capacity and audience connection. When I started, we had one analog signal on TV and one analog signal on Radio, which meant we programmed, promoted and produced content for only those channels. In Television, our production staff shot and edited video on tape, and we played our on-air content on videotape. While we experimented with some early versions of web streaming, the digital revolution was still a few years off. Over the years, we have expanded to four Television channels, each serving a different audience, two radio channels and we have developed numerous new content streams on numerous online platforms. We now shoot and edit digitally. We produce video content for all of our platforms digitally. Another dramatic change is the audiences we serve and how we serve them. Instead of our audience seeking out our content on TV and hearing it on Radio, we now strive to be part of our audiences’ lives wherever they are, including people on computers, tablets and cell phones.” Bob also shares his most memorable moments from SDPB: • “Winning an Emmy® for Lost Bird of Wounded Knee, one of the first documentaries I every wrote and produced when I first started here. We did not enter awards competitions regularly at the time, and although I had worked in TV for 12 years at the time, I had never known anyone who had won one of those. It doesn’t seem like much now as we have a whole trophy case full of them, but at the time, it was quite an attention grabber.” • “The time we had an electrical fire in the Production truck while on-theair broadcasting the State Basketball Tournament at the Rapid City Civic Center. It was amazing that we managed to keep a broadcast going during the chaos. I was just thankful nobody was injured.” • “The first time I looked at a screen and saw three basketball tournaments airing on three channels from three remote locations simultaneously. We had dreamed of this for years and had worked so hard to make it happen that it was a very dramatic thing to see come to fruition.” “When I came to SDPB, I figured I would be here for a couple years, like most people in most media jobs. During all my years with the network, I enjoyed opportunities that had been beyond my wildest dreams. I have met some of the most interesting people across our state, listened to their stories and shared them. Famous people like Joe Foss, George McGovern, Tom Brokaw, all of our state governors, our government leaders, authors, speakers, celebrities, and too many inspiring people to name. I have also been friends with some of the most creative and talented co-workers anyone could ever ask for. “
“I have been very blessed with an incredibly interesting career and am thankful to SDPB for allowing me that unique and special privilege.” SDPB is grateful to Bob for all his hard work, humor, creativity and leadership. We wish him a wonderful, well-earned retirement and muchas felicidades! 20 20

Meteorologist Kelly Serr grew up in Eureka, where her parents ran a tractor and implement dealership. Hanging out at the family business after school developed her curiosity for meteorology. “Over the

years, day in and day out, farmers came in and talked about the weather,” says Serr. “Nice weather or bad weather, and unfortunately all too often bad weather for the farmers.” Serr graduated from the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks and has been a meteorologist for 15 years. For the last five years, Serr has served Aberdeen’s National Weather Service (NWS) office as the Warning Coordination Meteorologist. She and her colleagues issue warnings, watches and advisories for 26 counties in central and northeast South Dakota and two in westcentral Minnesota. As a student, Serr was well aware of Ted Fujita’s (aka Mr. Tornado’s) work and his system for ranking tornadoes. She first put Fujita’s F-Scale into practice at the NWS, where employees are responsible for documenting tornadoes and ranking them by wind speed and wind type. Fujita’s original system was enhanced in 2007 and is now called the EF Scale:

Enhanced Fujita Scale. “Anytime there’s a tornado, we actually visit the site, if possible,” says Serr. “If we can’t, then we rely on talking to people on the phone and getting pictures. We look at the damage that’s occurred, whether it’s a tree, home, or property, and then we have damage indicators. It opens up degrees of damage. Are the shingles damaged? Are the windows broken out? Is an entire outside wall missing? From there we assign a wind speed that it takes to create that amount of damage to that property.” Fujita’s scale is primarily used after the fact, and can be used frugally with forecasts if conditions exist. “We can say this environment is explosive,” says Serr. “That we could expect violent tornadoes, EF3 or greater. But we never give or assign the scale. Doppler radar, one of our primary tools for issuing warnings, does give us some clues about rotation within a storm, but it can’t tell us what the actual wind speed in a tornado was.” The NWS works closely with fire departments, law enforcement, emergency management and the public to teach weather spotter courses so people may – safely – spot and relay information about storms. “The key is always knowing your distance, knowing where you are in relation to that storm, and knowing when it’s time to go inside,” says Serr. Fujita also discovered microbursts, which are sudden patterns of extremely strong, straight-line
winds. Serr says microbursts can occur with any storms and can catch folks unexpectedly. She relates her own intimate encounter. “In 2010, a microburst moved over my house. It picked up a piece of wood, put it through the living room window. Glass was embedded in the wood floors and the couch cushions. Rain came through the window and it was a huge disaster. They don’t have to be massive storms to be very destructive.” With the onset of severe weather season, Serr reminds folks to think about where to shelter from strong straight-line winds or tornadoes. “Now that we’re able to start gathering this summer, at concerts, outdoor activities or camping, it’s important to pay attention to forecasts and do some advanced planning. Sometimes, especially when we’re camping, there won’t be a safe place. You may have to get in your vehicle and drive someplace else. That’s why it’s so important to think about it in advance and keep track of the forecast.” Serr recommends weather.gov, the NWS website. The NWS does not have a cell phone app, due to rules and regulations. “But we’re also on Facebook and Twitter. And we recommend having other ways of getting alerts: if we’re issuing warnings this summer, they’ll go out over radio, TV, FEMA – they all have apps. These are good, reliable sources so you can know immediately what’s going on.”
American Experience Mr. Tornado Ted Fujita was a JapaneseAmerican engineer turned meteorologist. In 1945, a young Fujita was 130 miles from the atomic blast in Nagasaki, Japan. The 24-year-old engineer’s study of the damage began his life’s work on understanding destructive forces. After World War II, Fujita studied meteorology at the University of Chicago and immersed himself in research on tornadoes, including meticulous documentation of the destruction both on the ground and from airplanes. He introduced the “Fujita Scale” in 1971, a six-point scale that classifies degrees of tornado intensity. Bea Premack has the distinction of being one of the charter members of the Friends of SDPB and a former board member. In Aberdeen, Bea and her husband of 67 years, Herschel, owned and operated a scrap and auto parts for many years and also raised three children. She has been active in arts organizations, including the state arts council and the department of fine arts at Northern State University. Her passion for arts and accessibility to the arts for everyone in the state inspired her initial support of SDPB. “The connection of South Dakota Public Broadcasting to the arts is so important,” says Bea. “It’s very important to the arts world in South Dakota.” Bea says SDPB is a conduit for history and local and national art productions. “Herschel and I are big Antiques Roadshow watchers, as well as the music and history programs.”
When SDPB opened a “boutique studio” on the campus of NSU, Bea was glad that it would mean more stories could come out of Aberdeen. “I love to see more broadcasting come out of here and out of our smaller towns – that is such a part of South Dakota. We need to pay more attention to all our communities, not just Sioux Falls and Rapid City, because life is happening across the whole state.” As a founding member of the Friends of SDPB, Bea says she has watched SDPB change. “It makes me happy to see the success and how it’s grown and how people continue to work and make it grow. That’s pretty spectacular. It’s been really great to have been a part of that.” Photo from dedication of SDPB satellite studio at NSU (L to R): Tom & Danielle Aman; Carol Johnson, Friends of SDPB; Julie Johnson, former Friends board member; Paul McDonald, former Friends board president; Sue Gates, Friends board member. “A bit of music in the garden” takes on another dimension in the Viennese summer. The 2021 Vienna Philharmonic Summer Night Concert takes place in the landscaped park of Schönbrunn Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The aptly crafted theme for the 2021 concert is “Fernweh” translating to wanderlust (also a German word) or the desire to travel.
