Public Radio take us places. It takes us inside conflicts in the Middle East and Africa and Ukraine. It tells us the stories of the news through
the eyes of everyday people and world leaders. It takes us across South Dakota as we learn more about our friends, our neighbors and our leaders. We depend on Public Radio for the news in context. We hear the stories that reveal the thoughts and the hopes of people here and across the globe. We expand our knowledge about science, politics, world events, culture and more. Every day, we learn more about South Dakota, the United States and the world. Your support of public radio makes that possible. • Tune in for South Dakota news – Dakota Midday, local news reports, features, Statehouse. • Tune in for superb storytelling and trustworthy news – This
American Life, Radiolab, Marketplace, All Things Considered, Morning Edition, Science Friday, Fresh Air. • Tune in for laughter – Car Talk, Wait, Wait … Don’t Tell Me!, A Prairie Home Companion, Wits, Ask Me Another. • Tune in for ideas – On Being, TED Radio Hour, On the Media. • Tune in for music – Morning Classics, Jazz Nightly, On Record, American Routes, World Café. We make all of it possible with our membership contributions to the Friends of SDPB. We’ll be asking for your support on the air Oct. 18-25. Thank you. October 2014

Home: First place My Sunset Kayaker by Lisha Bairey of Chamberlain (left) “was taken at sunset on the Missouri River south of Chamberlain. … this is our home away from home.” Second place goes to Home Away From Home by Zack Hagen of Aberdeen: “a duck slough feels more like home to me than anything else.” Third place is Open House, by LaTonya Johnson of Custer. “Hospitality is paramount to being a true South Dakotan!”
Work: Look Up When You Work! (left) from the State Capitol Building earned first place for Keith Hemmelman of Pierre. “The State Capitol building is not only a beautiful piece of architecture, it is also a place where a lot of work gets done for the benefit of South Dakota’s citizens. … In this photo, you will notice that the stained glass panels are not installed in the rotunda. This is because they are being repaired & cleaned and will be reinstalled prior to the 125th anniversary of SD becoming a state.” Second place Spreading the Word! by Erica Harvey of Rapid City, shows John Halverson at 6am along Skyline Drive in Rapid City, with Elise, a red-tailed hawk. Third place Where the Corn Grows by Kendra Perry-Koski of Winner pays tribute to the ag industry.
4
Connections: Prairie Connections (left), showing the Oahe Chapel that overlooks the Oahe Dam near Pierre, earned first place for Keith Hemmelman of Pierre. “This church originally was located near the Peoria flats and served not only as a church where families could connect with each other, but also as a school.” Second place Morning Coffee and Donuts at Weimer’s by Linda Chaplin of Sturgis, shows a bakery that has been connecting friends in Sturgis for more than 65 years. Third place Birds of a Feather by Erica Harvey of Rapid City, has two meanings for the photographer. The iconic Dinosaur Park in Rapid City connects us with childhood memories, Harvey says. And the redtailed hawk is a descendent of dinosaurs, “though not the concrete kind she is sitting on.” Learn. Dream. Grow.
We selected 12 winners in the Landscapes of South Dakota Photo Contest – from more than 800 entries! People across the state submitted photos – all taken on Aug. 19 – in four categories: South Dakota: What “Being South Dakotan” means to me. Home: Photos related to where and how we live. Work: Photos related to where and how we work. Connections: Photos related to everything that connects us to each other. Go to SDPB.org/Landscapes for links to SDPB’s yearlong Landscapes project and the photo gallery reflecting A Day in South Dakota. Tune into SDPB Radio from Oct. 18-25 to hear how you can get a 2015 calendar based on the photos when you support Friends of SDPB. The Landscapes of South Dakota Photo Contest is sponsored by Harold’s Photo Experts.
South Dakota: Christian Begeman of Sioux Falls was west of Watertown in the Long Lake area when he captured Starry Night, the first-place winner (windmill at left). “A clear night sky with the Milky Way, a prairie windmill and a shooting star. It doesn’t get a much more South Dakota than that!” A visitor to South Dakota – Henry Kraft of Beachwood, Ohio – took second place with Phoenix Rising (left), showing a proud stallion near Piedmont.

In an era of smart-phones and GPS, how can a 270-ton passenger jet vanish into thin air? NOVA examines the mystery in Why Planes Vanish. NOVA tells the inside story of the search for Flight MH370 and meets the key players, from all corners of the globe, who have spent months searching for the lost plane. How easy is it to make a plane disappear? Can new technology guarantee that, in the future, nothing will ever be “lost” again?
