TWO YEARS OF COVID: HOW DO WE MEASURE the length of a pandemic?
by Lori Wash, Host of SDPB’s “In the Moment” At the 2022 State of the State address in Pierre, Lt. Governor Larry Rhoden said South Dakota might be one of the only places in the country where unprecedented times have led to such positive results. He was speaking, of course, of our economic vitality and a burgeoning state budget, ripe for legacy investments that could benefit generations of South Dakotans. Though I’m sure some people celebrated his comments and others criticized them, I’m less interested in value judgements at this stage of the pandemic and more interested in how we take measure of the past two years. In the early days of March, 2020, I decided it would be vital to mark the milestones of these days: The governor’s first press conference. The first

closed school buildings. The first canceled basketball tournaments. The first COVID death. And, most hopeful of all, the arrival of the first vaccine, which I imagined racing in like a polio vaccine to a rural locale back in the days when vaccines travelled by railcar or dog sled. Imagine the fanfare! I took notes. I kept records. Every day was something new. Every day was so “unprecedented” we had to stop using the word on air lest we sink into the mires of broadcasting cliché. Today, two years after the first confirmed COVID case in South Dakota, those little floor circles that urge me to give other shoppers space in various stores are scuffed by hundreds of heavy footsteps. The paper hearts supporting health care workers have faded and been peeled from windows. My child got sick and came home from college. My child
got well and went back to college. I set up a radio studio from my home. I returned to the SDPB Sioux Falls studio. Daycares closed and opened and closed again. Masks went on, were discarded, went back on, were scorned. Still the question remains. How do we measure the past two years? Hospitalizations? Visitor spending? Deaths? Scientific achievement? Pandemic loss came to my house early; maybe it did to yours as well. Two years ago, in June, we drove to Minneapolis to sit with my brother and talk about his life and how long it would last. We slept in a tent in his back yard so as not to bring infection inside. COVID meant his trips to the cancer clinic had become solo journeys, but he was never truly alone. His nurses and doctors wrapped him in love and skill. Still, he couldn’t
see well, so he got lost in the hallways. He was afraid, though I don’t like to think of him like that. We remained hopeful nonetheless. We ordered flowers for his wedding and then canceled the order when we learned of his death. Unprecedented. I didn’t want to take time off work, and not because I’m devoted, mind you. It was simply because I longed to pretend he was alive and nothing had changed. Everything had changed, of course. I took time away to mourn. One day, my colleague Josh Haiar showed up at my doorstep with gifts from SDPB folks across the state. I remember how quickly he delivered packages and pandemic-dashed away. Friends had baked and shopped and knitted and painted for me. I was given bottles of South Dakota wine and South Dakota snacks. I was presented with original art and Bible verses and even jokes to pull me from one grief-laced moment to the next. I’m guessing if you’ve suffered during this time, you have similar stories of kindness arriving at your doorstop in its own unruly way. I love hearing those stories, even though it
means I have to carry the sad parts of the story as well. One colleague’s wife made a prayer shawl for me, rich with intricate knots and jewel tone yarns. I draped it over my shoulders, day after day. Then I decided I needed it more often, and I folded it under my pillow, night after night. Sometimes the shawl was wet with tears when I awoke the next morning. Every now and then it still is. Unprecedented. Since those early days, other coworkers have fallen ill. Their children have gotten sick, which frankly, I find painful to think about. More of our beloveds have died. Others of us have fallen in love. Married. Welcomed new grandchildren. Joyfully retired. Maybe that’s what’s happened in your family too. It’s complicated, isn’t it? Do I measure this pandemic by the number of statewide hospitalizations or by the weddings I missed? By the babies I’ve held or the babies I haven’t been able to hold? After I was fully vaccinated, my nephew would hug me, wrap his wiry arms around my waist and declare “COVID’s over” as he squeezed. He’s recovering from the virus as I write this. He’s 10 and having trouble getting his breath back to his chest, but he’ll be okay. My mother has COVID for the second time. Her doctor says there aren’t enough antiviral treatments at the moment. He orders her to drink lots of water and sleep. On the
phone she sounds — how shall I say this — unprecedented. She coughs into the phone and tells me I shouldn’t worry so much. Two years in, even if I try, I cannot pretend this pandemic isn’t happening in my back yard. And yet I find comfort in the prayer shawl, especially when I count each stitch as I fall asleep. I find joy in my daughter’s raucous laughter via FaceTime. I find love in a quiet dinner downtown, a glass of wine, and a tender conversation. I find contentment in an open movie theatre with reclining seats. I think I’ll measure this next year of pandemic times in prayer-shawl-stitches. In radio episodes. In texts from friends. In the holding of hands. In lines of poetry. How will you measure yet another unprecedented South Dakota year? I encourage you to share your story with someone you love. In June 1943, Los Angeles erupted into the worse race riots in the city to date. In American Experience Zoot Suit Riots see how for ten straight nights, American sailors armed with make-shift weapons cruised Mexican American neighborhoods in search of "zoot-suiters" — hip, young Mexican teens dressed in baggy pants and long-tailed coats. The military men dragged kids — some as young as twelve years old — out of movie theaters and diners, bars, and cafes, tearing the clothes off the young men's bodies and viciously beating them. There have been a lot of changes to the coverage of State Basketball tournaments since I started working with SDPB a little over two decades ago. In those first years, only 2 tournaments were covered each year, one girls and one boys. And there were just 8 games aired each weekend. No games were streamed online. After a few years, streaming of all three tournaments became available. And the decision was made to put all 12 games, including consolation rounds, from each location on the various SDPB stations. But there are certain things that have never changed from the time SDPB was awarded the contract. Early on in the coverage history, SDPB management decided that every aspect of their coverage would have a positive spin. That was fine with my broadcast partner Craig Mattick and myself. We shared a philosophy that when it came to calling games, we were not there to coach, we were not there to officiate, and we were not there to criticize. Our goal was to showcase each person taking part in the best possible light. We knew that for some of the kids, especially, that weekend may be the highlight of their life. One of the things that SDPB has always been great at is telling stories. Whether that is on air with shows like “Dakota Life”, or online in Tales of the Gridiron, stories are what they do best. 18

And they knew that they could use the state tourney coverage to find and share even more tales. Craig and I were delighted to be a part of that. When a team made the tourney we were covering we would reach out to coaches, and even fans we knew, to get extra information on kids taking part. We cared as much about if they were on the Honor Roll or Student Council as we did about some of them being All Conference. Again, we wanted to boost the kids and let people know they were indeed students, with family and other hobbies and activities, not just basketball players. Yes, when it came to storytelling about family connections or other interests, some people have told us to “stick to the game”. But the majority of viewers have appreciated our approach. Being able to tell the story of folks who have overcome adversity, or other angles, is one of the things we enjoy doing the most. Often those stories came from the coaches. But we also had fans provide us information. And no one was better at that than the late Bob Connot of Winner. In the early 2000’s, the Warriors were in the Dome for the finals. Bob had reached out to me wondering if I wanted some background on the players. I told him anything that made me sound smarter than I am I was all in favor of! Bob sent me 4 pages, including something about every kid on the roster. That became a tradition for him, no matter what the sport. If Winner was in, as they often were, so was Bob! His information was insightful and could also be hilarious. But he always had something positive about every single kid. We got to be good friends. I later came to learn that everyone became a good friend of Bob’s. That was who
he was. I am grateful that he reached out to me. That is a connection I probably would not have made if it weren’t for my working for SDPB. He was a gem of a human, and I miss him. There has never, in my mind, been a better story we have shared than the one about Bailey Richter. Her Waverly-South Shore team made the B tourney in 2019. Earlier that year, she suffered from optic nerve strokes and lost her sight for up to two weeks at a time. But she was able to participate in a game and hit 2 three-point shots late in a game in the opening round against Ethan. It was glorious to watch, and even better to call on the air. One other thing that has not changed is the joy I have gotten from sharing a microphone with Craig Mattick all these years. He is a pro’s pro and always so prepared. Whether it is soccer, wrestling, track, volleyball, basketball or football, he does it all and he does it all well. In my opinion, he is the single most under rated sports announcer in South Dakota in the over 40 years I have been here. I have been blessed to be associated with SDPB for all these years. I am closer to the end of my time with them than I am to the beginning. But whoever may be calling the games, you know that when it comes to the coverage of state basketball tournaments, the folks at SDPB will continue to do what they do best. March 2022 – Mountain Stage For more than 30 years, Mountain Stage has been the home of live music on public radio. Produced by West Virginia Public Broadcasting and distributed by NPR Music, each two-hour episode of Mountain Stage can be heard weekends on SDPB Radio Saturdays at 6pm (5 MT) and Sundays at noon (11am MT). Recorded in front of a live audience, Mountain Stage features performances from seasoned legends and emerging stars in genres ranging from folk and blues to indie rock, synth pop, world music, and beyond. Originally hosted by Larry Groce, Grammy winner Kathy Mattea assumed hosting duties in September, 2021.

DaNita Murray is no stranger to rural life and what farming means for our state. She grew up on her family farm near Milbank where she was able to experience firsthand the incredible advances within the agriculture industry and the impact those make right here at home. A South Dakota State University and Drake University School of Law graduate, DaNita and has served as both Chief Counsel and Policy Advisor for the U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry and as the Senior Counsel for the House Agriculture Committee. She also served as Director of Public Policy for the National Corn Growers Association. DaNita began her role as executive director of South Dakota Corn in Dec. 2021. She sat down with us to discuss why South Dakota Corn supports SDPB’s coverage of South Dakota High School Activities as an underwriter. SDPB: Why does SD Corn support High School Activities? DaNita Murray: At South Dakota Corn our local communities are at the heart of what we do and who we serve. Many of our farmers and members have children, grandchildren and even in some cases great grandchildren who play sports and participate in many other activities such as band, choir and orchestra. We are supporting those who support us.

SDPB: Why does SD Corn support SDPB’s coverage of High School Activities? How does it benefit your members? Murray: High school sports are at the hearts of our small towns and big cities across the state and cover every county across the region in multiple boys’ and girls’ sports.
For instance, I know many enjoy watching high school state tournaments on TV, even if their local school is not participating. At South Dakota Corn we like to support our state’s youth in a way that not only directly benefits them and their extracurricular activities, but also brings awareness to a wide variety of audiences across the state of the work our farmers and ranchers do for their businesses. Our latest campaign also tells the story that although everything in agriculture starts with a seed, there is so much more to the modern industry than only farming.

SDPB: What do you hear from Members about your support of High School Activities? Murray: Our members and farmers across the state let us know about the beautiful ads they see on TV, hear on the radio or see in high school sports and activities programming. They are thrilled to know we support our students and are also committed to furthering our state’s No. 1 industry: agriculture. SDPB: How long have you supported SDPB’s coverage? Murray: We are proud to support high school sports across the state and this is our 7th year doing so through SDPB. We look forward to many more years supporting South Dakota’s student athletes!
