Happy March, readers!
Spring is just around the corner. With the changing of the seasons comes a change of our own. You'll notice a different look as you view the cover or turn the pages. The amazing team at SDPB has been carefully planning and implementing a refresh to our brand. We invite you to visit pages 4-5 to read about the process and how it all came to fruition. The new design elements offer a refreshing take on our organization and reflects our audience-centered approach to programming and outreach. We hope you like it as much as we do.
Other things to look forward to are SDHSAA activities, including Girls and Boys High School Basketball and All-State Band performances. Keep up to date with all of them online, and see the basketball tournaments play out live on TV. March is also an opportunity to show your appreciation for the programming we provide by supporting uswatch for more information online and in our newsletters.
We're also happy to introduce information about the PBS Book Readers Club. This monthly series brings members into conversations and stories about books and shows, including interviews with authors and PBS personalities. Find more information on the back cover.
Through April, we’re celebrating 50 Years of Friends of SDPB. That means that for half a decade, members have financially recognized the importance and impact of public media in South Dakota. We are thankful for a $50,000 New Donor Match from First Bank and Trust, along with support from Van and Barb Fishback. We are also grateful for your support as we embark on the next 50 years.
Another month, another issue for our members. We hope you enjoy it!
Gratefully,
KATE DRENNEN RYAN MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR, FRIENDSOF SDPB
Brand Refresh
An Inside Look at the How & Why
As SDPB continues to evolve and innovate to meet the needs of South Dakotans, we see an opportunity to refresh our look to better reflect you—our members, viewers, and listeners. Since May, SDPB has been working with Fresh Produce, a marketing agency in Sioux Falls, to help refresh our brand and image. As we reveal the new brand in March, you’re getting a sneak peek in this magazine.
When asked what SDPB means to them, one respondent told us that it’s “programs that enrich my life and leave me feeling that I have learned something.” This was one of hundreds of responses we received when asking people about South Dakota Public Broadcasting. Listening to our audience was the centerpiece of the work Fresh Produce and we did during this process.
"It's been over twenty years since the current version of our logo was adopted,” said Julie Overgaard, Executive Director of SDPB. “A lot has changed in that time, both inside and outside our organization. Just as we have updated SDPB to take advantage of new technologies, we felt it was time to update our image to better reflect who we are as an organization."
Heidi Marsh, Fresh Produce Account Executive, worked directly with the SDPB team to help identify who we are as an organization, and who our audience and future audiences are. She shares what Fresh Produce’s mission was during the process.
Tom Bates (left) and Ted Heeren (right)"We work with lots of different groups that are sometimes complex," says Heidi, "but everyone we approach is very different because we take time to listen and understand the organization. The results are always really unique and diverse. We walk alongside the organization and try to become part of the team. SDPB walked alongside us the whole time; they were open and inclusive and wanted other members to be a part of it. We anticipated that we would enjoy it, thinking, 'These guys are going to be great to work with,' and they were! Everybody was full of energy and excitement going into this."
Part of their technique is talking to a brand's audience and seeing what the brand means to them. During their research, Fresh Produce conducted a survey that 581 people responded to. They traveled across the state and spoke to over 60 people to ask what SDPB meant to them. Ted Heeran, Creative Director and Founder of Fresh Produce, talks more about this process.
"One of the most exciting and rewarding steps is the discovery phase," says Ted, "where we spend a lot of time with the audience and organization. It's all about listening for us. The interviews helped us to visualize what the brand should be. Public Broadcasting has always been an organization that most of us at Fresh Produce grew up with, enjoyed, and valued. When we started, this was the kind of work that we always dreamed we could do, where you're collaborating with passionate people and doing important work for our state. It's also a chance to
honor and celebrate this place, and getting a project that does all three is rare. It was a pleasure. "
Tom Bates, Senior Graphic Designer, continues this conversation from a design point of view. "As with any design research, it tells you exactly what to do. We listened to people who care about and associate with SDPB, and those conversations told us exactly what kind of colors we needed to look for, what kind of energy to incorporate, how it needed to sound, how it needed to be written, and what it needed to evoke. It was almost seamless and a complete joy to work on. From a design standpoint, it fell onto the page perfectly."
The team at Fresh Produce spent months getting to know you, our readers, and our supporters. SDPB could never describe our audience in just one word, so the group found many words and ways to represent our diverse and loyal supporters.
"SDPB talks about inclusivity," explains Tom, "and we felt that during the process. We felt like partners. When building the brand, we represent South Dakota and the different types of people who see themselves as SDPB. One particular design element that enforced that was the color palette. We chose a vibrant color palette to evoke a sense of pride and seriousness, and also a sense of mischief. The choice of color representing the whole state allowed us to use pinks, blues, greens, yellows, and bright oranges. It made everything so much nicer."
C OLOR THEORY
"We chose a vibrant color palette to evoke a sense of pride and seriousness, and also a sense of mischief. The choice of color representing the whole state allowed us to use pinks, blues, greens, yellows, and bright oranges. It made everything so much nicer."
Tom Bates, Senior Graphic Designer'An eager and articulate person, excited about living.'
Curious and affectionate are words that also stuck out to the team at Fresh Produce.
"When breaking down the audience's values, says Ted, "one word that I keep thinking about is curiosity. There was this deep curiosity and this desire to continue learning with most of the people we talked to. There was also affection for this place. A quote from the survey talked about how SDPB helps them be a better person. It's a pretty great organization when people look to you to help them improve and to be a better person. That's pretty rare.
Heidi tells of a couple more attributes that describe our audience and helped guide their process of our re-fresh. "There was one quote from the survey that we just kept returning to, and it helped us visualize an audience: 'An eager and articulate person, excited about living.' That seemed to capture an audience who loves SDPB and wants to be a part of it. The audience is also active, resilient, and courageous. My favorite is the teacher, questioner, and trickster."
The process not only helped us learn more about our supporters, but it also helped us create another valuable partnership with a South Dakota organization. Fresh Produce reflects on what the process was like for their team and perspectives.
"Every time we shared ideas with the group," says Heidi, "it got more exciting, and the momentum built. It never lost its excitement. The more people you involve in a project like this, the more momentum it gains, the more you listen to people, and the more questions you ask. It does good for the brand in the end."
Ted explains how our teams meshed so well because of our mutual curiosity. "Anytime you're meeting new people, you're learning new things. One of the things that I think our team has in common with SDPB, and probably a lot of South Dakota, is that we're a curious team. We love to experience and learn new things, so traveling around the state and hearing from other people was great. Something that we always learn in these processes is where people connect. We can identify what we all have in common as South Dakotans, the things we share. We had assumptions going into the project because, being from South Dakota, we think we know it, but we learned a lot of new things.
"We've done branding projects with a similar process," concludes Tom, "and each one of them is unique, but this one emphasizes the importance of listening and being engaged with the people we're talking to."
SDPB’s mission continues. We desire to inspire, connect, and entertain South Dakotans with trusted journalism, quality education, and compelling storytelling. This refreshed brand helps us examine ourselves and our audience; keeping you as the focus of our work. It is dream work that makes a serious impact.
Celebrate SDPB, an uncommon place.
Call the Midwife Season 13 Premiere
NATIONAL PROGRAMMING
Season 13 continues to explore complex medical and personal situations on the midwifery and district nursing rounds. It is now 1969 and more babies are being born in hospital than ever before. Pressure on maternity beds remains extremely high across the country but Poplar is coping better than most due to the work of Nonnatus House and the popularity of home births under the auspices of the Sisters. This season will also see stories from within the Sylheti and Nigerian communities and from around the docks. Poor housing continues to blight areas of Poplar presenting complex social and health challenges to the Nonnatus team. It will also explore issues surrounding Cerebral Palsy, Congenital Hip Dysplasia, Tetanus, Porphyria and TB.
SDPB1: Sundays starting March 17, 7pm (6 MT)
Masterpiece Nolly
Helena Bonham Carter (The Crown, Harry Potter) stars as soap opera legend Noele “Nolly” Gordon, one of the most famous faces on British TV in the 1960s and 70s, whose unceremonious firing from her hit show at the height of her career was front-page news. A bold exploration of how the establishment turns on women who refuse to play by the rules, Nolly is an outrageously fun and wildly entertaining ride through Gordon’s most tumultuous years, and a sharp, affectionate, and heartbreaking portrait of a forgotten icon.
SDPB1: Sundays in March at 8pm (7 MT)
Dante – Inferno to Paradise
DANTE: Inferno to Paradise, a groundbreaking two-part, 4-hour film, presents and explores the extraordinary power, beauty and drama of Dante’s great masterwork, The Divine Comedy, set within the riveting circumstances of the poet’s own life, and of the turbulent times he lived in. DANTE will bring deep and widespread awareness of Dante’s significance and immense contribution to world culture: an impact that has reached now across 700 years with a text that speaks as powerfully to contemporary readers today as it did to the men and women of Dante’s own time. The modern-day relevance of the story of Dante’s life and work is astonishing, as people everywhere look for signs of hope and redemption and a way forward in circumstances as challenging in their own way as Dante’s own.

KEEPIN' IT LOCAL
Tales from the Hardwood
Basketball is a huge part of many people's lives in South Dakota, especially at the high school level. Tales from the Hardwood takes a journey into some of the people, schools, and communities that help shape the hoops scene in our state. The sport is more than wins, losses, and statistics. It's the human element that truly makes it great in South Dakota. This episode features four stories that surround the high school basketball landscape in South Dakota.
Yankton's Boys Basketball team student manager, Miles Krajewski, is a varsity tennis player and golfer for the Bucks. He's also a World Champion badminton player.
Having a female coach in varsity boys' basketball is rare, but Ruth Dreamer coaches Oelrich's boys' basketball team, joining only a few others in history. Dreamer also played in Pine Ridge growing up.
Josh Olthoff of Brandon Valley has a hearing impairment. We'll profile his journey of becoming a varsity basketball player at the AA level and some challenges he's had to overcome.
Sully Buttes recently dedicated its court to honor longtime girls' basketball coach and football coach Mark Senftner. Mark passed away in the Fall of '22, but his legacy survives today.

Supporter Spotlight
Corporate Sponsor – Anthem Oats
Anthem Oats is a local, family-owned oatmeal company in Frederick, South Dakota, working hard to provide nutrient-dense and quality oats to our state through generations. SDPB enjoys partnering with an organization like Anthem Oats, which, like us, values bringing quality production and information to South Dakota. Owners Taylor and Cassie Sumption tell us more about their company.
"It's important to us to develop a product that consumers want," says Taylor. "For a century, our country was focused on producing a lot of food as cheaply as you can make it, and I think consumers have shifted to valuing quality. Consumers are willing to pay a little more but want the story behind it and an authentic person to grow it. That's been our focus as a consumer company."
Taylor talks about the benefits his company sees from supporting SPDB.
"We get approached by people who see our ads, especially during the state tournament season. Like any other avenue where people get in touch with their product, it's nice to have that engagement with people who see our commercials or connect us with Frederick. The most rewarding thing to me is interacting with the consumers and telling them about what we do."
Taylor continues by saying "outreach" is a word he would use to describe public broadcasting.
"Outreach helps bring the state together. I always like seeing programming about western South Dakota. Even though we travel through them, we don't always stop, so we don't have that connection. It's cool to see other parts of our state that often get overlooked and learn things about those communities through public broadcasting."
"It's essential to support public broadcasting to keep inspiring our youth to learn. That's a big part of my life; I want to get up every morning and learn something new. PBS is the epitome of seeing and learning new things."
- Taylor Sumption
For Cassie, "education" is the word that stands out.
"Growing up with Sesame Street and all the good shows on PBS, I relate SDPB to education. PBS has such good, wholesome shows, too. It's important to support it so we get these shows on television for our young children. Even for people my age, I'd rather watch good, educational shows."
Businesses like Anthem Oats understand the importance. Taylor shares why he believes it is important for organizations like Anthem Oats to lend a hand.
"I grew up with PBS, and it impacted my youth. I think it's important in a rural state like this to support any kind of avenue that we have to get news and information out there. One of the most important things in life is being driven to learn, and public broadcasting does a great job of keeping that alive. People desire to keep learning new information, and it is a really good platform for that."
