NATIONAL MEMORIAL DAY CONCERT FEATURES LOCAL
VETERAN The National Memorial Day Concert is an annual program broadcast live from the west lawn of the US Capitol commemorating the Memorial Day holiday. In tribute to the over 58,000 American lives lost in the Vietnam War and the more than 3 million Americans who served in Southeast Asia during the brutal conflict, this year’s concert will share the story of combat medic Francis Whitebird, a young warrior from a Lakota family with generations of military service. Whitebird’s uncle fought in World War I, his father was a Lakota Code Talker during World War II, and both his sons served in the Iraq War. During two tours in Vietnam, Whitebird endured combat losses and saved lives, received a Purple Heart himself, and forged bonds of friendship that have lasted a lifetime. Francis Whitebird grew up on the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota, and only spoke Lakota until he was 6 years old. Born into a family of veterans it was natural for him to enlist in the Army in 1968 and continue the family tradition. Cover photo courtesy of Capital Concerts
Whitebird arrived in Vietnam in 1969 and was assigned to be a Combat Medic in the 196th Light Infantry Brigade. During his tour in country, Whitebird’s warrior spirit inspired confidence in his brothers in arms. He kept them mentally and physically fit, gave them hope in the face of death, saved countless lives. He fulfilled the promise to himself to go into combat and survive, and to earn a combat medic badge, continuing the valor of generations of warriors in his family. In his post-military career, Whitebird earned his Master’s in Education from Harvard, returned to Rosebud Reservation and has devoted his life to preserving the Lakota language and culture. Francis Whitebird will be honored for his service to his fellow soldiers and to our country during the National Memorial Day Concert. Watch Sunday, May 29 at 7:00pm Central, 6 Mountain, repeated at 9:00 Central, 8 Mountain on SDPB1-TV.

HOW TO PREVENT THE
SUMMER
SLIDE Books are brain food. Just as a child’s appetite for food never ends, their desire for information and answers needs to be provided for every day, especially in the summer when they are away from the traditional classroom setting. Children are endlessly curious, and their imagination is bottomless. Reading books they love is one of the best ways children can practice and maintain skills they learned throughout the school year. They will learn more if they are enjoying what they read, so let them choose the topics and styles of books they like the most to initiate the curiosity. Reading and exploring lead by parents and adults is the best way to avoid a “Summer Slide” in learning. Children, especially in early elementary years, are likely to lose the most ground because they are in a crucial process of gaining foundational skills in basic subjects, like reading and math. Utilizing your local library summer reading program is one way to keep kids entertained while learning along the way. “Summer Reading fun has begun!” says Laura Kelly, the Children and Youth Services Coordinator for the South Dakota State Library Association. “Reading is like a free vacation that takes you anywhere you want to go.” This year’s collaborative Summer Library Program theme to explore is ‘Oceans of Possibilities!’ Signup for the summer reading program at your local library and travel through stories. Can’t get out to your local library? Kelly says that’s no problem. “The South Dakota State Library has 4

acquired READsquared, a software program that allows South Dakota public libraries to manage their reading programs online. The program makes it easy and fun for you to sign up from home, track reading goals and collect incentives. Check to see if your local library is using READsquared and how you can sign up today.” Visiting the local library, virtually or in person, doesn’t have to be limited to the state’s youngest children. Youth of all ages can benefit from educational activities during the summer to keep their mind active and avoid losing valuable knowledge they spent so much time learning during the school year. Summer is a great opportunity to read a book or series together as a family – even older children enjoy listening to books read aloud. You might find yourself learning something new with the kids in your life, too. “Summer isn’t just for kids; adults look forward to it as well!” Kelly adds. “If you’re visiting the library with your child, pick up a new book for yourself to enjoy on those hot summer nights. Bring your friends and attend inperson, outdoor, take home or virtual programming. Take a book selfie of yourself and share on social media with #SDSummerReading2022.” Don’t stop the learning at one subject, either. Summer is a great time to explore math and science while enjoying
the weather. Take a walk around the block and count the number of cars that pass by, keep a tally of the insects and plants in the park, or take some ice cubes outside to see how long it takes them to melt on a hot day. Incorporating learning with outside activities is the ultimate summer fun. Parents and adults can ask children open-ended questions such as, “What do you think will happen if...” and “Why did it work that way...” and help them explore for the answer. This simple activity teaches them to think critically and learn how to find the answers to their questions. We all learn best when we are having fun and doing activities we enjoy. Keeping things simple and enjoyable is the easiest way to keep young children interested. Resources for parents are available at PBS.org/parents. Connect learning to your children’s favorite PBS KIDS characters and shows with a summer checklist or activity book to spark their interest. If you aren’t sure where to start, more learning resources, provided by SDPB’s Early Learning Initiative (ELI), can be found at SDPB.org/eli. Interactive learning games, fun print out activities, and PBS KIDS education videos are also available for the days leading up to summer weather when you want to continue the learning indoors.

Summer 1962: London is swinging with new music, hip fashions, and an irresistible hedonistic spirit. It’s also seething with antisemitic violence incited by homegrown neoNazis. Masterpiece presents a riveting fourpart drama set in this colorful but tumultuous time on Ridley Road, based on Jo Bloom’s acclaimed novel. Inspired by true events, Ridley Road stars newcomer Agnes O’Casey as Vivien Epstein, a young Jewish hairdresser who fits right into London’s mod scene, while secretly infiltrating the British neo-Nazi hierarchy on behalf of Jewish antifascists. In olden days a glimpse of stocking was looked on as something shocking, but now Anything Goes. Enjoy this London production of Cole Porter’s classic musical led by Tony winner Sutton Foster who reprises her Tony-winning role as Reno Sweeney directed by Kathleen Marshall with favorite songs like “I Get A Kick Out of You” and “You’re the Top.”

Historian Lucy Worsley reveals new evidence about some of British history’s biggest unsolved mysteries in a new four-part series. In the first episode, Lucy Worsley Investigates tackles the subject of the Princes in the Tower. Great Performances presents playwright Jocelyn Bioh’s critically acclaimed adaptation of “The Merry Wives of Windsor” by William Shakespeare. Merry Wives is set in South Harlem where immigrants of the West African diaspora are living side-by-side with their African American neighbors. American Experience Plague at the Golden Gate takes us back to turn-of-the 20th-century San Francisco, when a deadly outbreak of bubonic plague in the city’s Chinatown and the hunt to identify its source led to an all-too-familiar spate of violent antiAsian sentiment.

SURVIVING THE
‘72 FLOOD
Robbie Corner’s Story
Written by Seth Tupper A friend’s curiosity about a car could be the reason Robbie Corner survived the flood.
“She said, ‘Be careful,’ and we said, ‘Yeah, we’ll be back.’”
Corner, who was 18, was heading to the local stock-car races that Friday evening when they were canceled because of the rain. Corner remembers warnings on the radio about potential flooding.
After they located the Corvette, the young men decided to hike up Cleghorn Canyon and see how much water was rushing toward Rapid Creek. They turned back when the rain got heavier.
“I said to my two friends, ‘You know, we’d better go back out to my mom’s house and see if she wants to move some furniture out of the basement, just in case some water gets in there.’”
“It felt like someone was pouring a bucket of water steadily over our head,” Corner remembers.
Her house was alongside Rapid Creek, west of Rapid City where Magic Canyon Road splits off from Highway 44. Corner’s parents bought the land from a railroad company in 1950. They built a small house about 50 yards from the water, and then a bigger house at the water’s edge. The creek and its rocky canyon walls were a childhood playground for Corner and his younger sister, Candace. They floated in the water during the summer, walked or bicycled to nearby Cleghorn School in the fall, and ice-skated on the creek in the winter. Tragedy struck in 1967 when their father, Robert Corner Sr., died of emphysema at age 46. Mary Corner continued living in the bigger creek-side house with the two children. She rented out the smaller house. When Robbie Corner got to his mother’s house with his friends early on the evening of June 9, 1972, the creek was still within its banks. The young men moved some furniture out of the basement. Then, at Mary Corner’s urging, they invited the younger couple renting the smaller, one-story house to join Mary in the bigger, two-story house, where she assumed they’d all be safer if the water rose. That’s when a friend of Robbie’s called to say there was a Corvette washed under a bridge about a mile up the highway near Cleghorn Canyon. Robbie and his friends decided to walk up the highway and have a look. Robbie told his mother he was leaving.
Water was gushing out of the Black Hills, down through gullies and drainages and canyons, and into Rapid Creek. Robbie remembers having to yell over the sound of the torrent, which he compared to a freight train. Rapid Creek was far out of its banks, nearly up to Highway 44. Looking down from the road, Robbie could see through the lightning flashes that his mother’s house and the rental house were surrounded by high, flowing water. “So we stood there and debated, should we try to get to the house? But about that point, houses started washing by where we were standing, and propane tanks were hitting trees and exploding. And people were on the roofs of houses that were floating by and they were screaming.”
houses floating down the creek struck the big house and knocked it from its foundation, while the smaller house was spared such a collision. There was no sign of Corner’s mother or her renters. Robbie joined up with a neighbor and walked into Rapid City, through miles of hellish devastation, until they found some friends with a working phone. Robbie called his uncle, who said Robbie’s younger sister, Candace, was alive and accounted for. She’d been in a car with friends near the creek in western Rapid City when the flood struck. The car started to float, so she jumped out and held onto a tree until she was rescued. On the afternoon of June 10, Robbie got the news he’d been dreading. His mother’s body was found several miles downstream from her home. The bodies of the young couple who’d been renting the smaller house were found within a few days, and because they had no relatives in the area, Robbie had to identify them. Robbie, 18, and Candace, 16, were suddenly orphaned. They went to live with their aunt and uncle, who put Robbie to work in their construction business. Robbie eventually bought the business and ran it until he retired.
Some National Guard soldiers ushered the young men away from the water, to a house up a slope on the other side of the highway. That’s where Corner, his friends and a number of other people rounded up by the National Guard waited for the flood to subside.
He often thinks of the flood and wonders about his decisions. If he’d stayed at his mother’s house, would he have recognized the danger and convinced everyone to flee? Or would he have been caught unaware and perished along with them?
Just before sunrise, Corner walked down to the highway and looked toward his mother’s home.
As it is, they died and he survived, and as Robbie puts it, “It’s just possibly the luck of someone calling to look at a Corvette washed under a bridge.”
It was gone. “There was just not a single board left of the house,” he said. The smaller rental home was badly damaged but still standing. Corner suspects other

girls got GAME In June of 1972, Congress enacted the Educational Amendment known as Title IX. This civil rights law “prohibits sex-based discrimination in any school or other education program that receives funding from the federal government.” Before Title IX, few opportunities existed for female athletes. Title IX paved the way for high school girls’ and college women’s sports and activities to take off nationally – including right here in South Dakota. In Girls Got Game, SDPB explores the sports of basketball, volleyball, gymnastics, and more, and examines how girls’ athletics have grown and evolved in the Mt. Rushmore state since the passage of Title IX. SDPB speaks with Ruth Rehn, Jo Auch, Jill Christensen, Lolly Forseth, and others who were involved in the early history and evolution of women’s athletics in the state. Produced by Nate Wek. Watch Girls Got Game Thursday, May 12 at 8pm Central, 7 Mountain on SDPB-TV.
Saksanica
The Dakota word for dress is “Saksanica.” Today we see the beautiful dresses worn at pow wows and other gatherings and marvel at the intricate beadwork and decoration. The tradition of making dresses goes back generations, and the methods of making these dresses by hand has evolved. SDPB premieres a new documentary from Pioneer PBS – Saksanica. Through this documentary, award-winning filmmaker Leya Hale traces the traditions underlying the dress making culture of Lakota and Dakota communities. Saksanica features interviews with Gaby Strong, Pejuta Haka Red Eagle, Gabrielle Tateyuskanskan, Leah Thomas, Marcy Fiddler and Lonna Stevens as they discuss the materials, hand craft, adornments and cultural heritage contained within traditional Dakota and Lakota women’s dresses. Director and Producer Leya Hale is from the Sisseton Wahpeton Dakota and Diné Nations. She is a producer for Twin Cities PBS and is a recipient of the Sundance Institute Merata Mita Fellowship for Indigenous Artists. Hale is also the producer of Bring Her Home, a documentary about the missing and murdered Indigenous women epidemic. The film was made possible with support from Margaret A. Cargill Philanthropies and by the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

SDPB
Supporter Spotlight
Viewers like you. You’ve seen and heard that term frequently. SDPB and public broadcasting stations around the nation serve our local communities due to the generosity of people just like you. And people just like Joanie Holm, who has a special connection to SDPB.
On Call with the Prairie Doc ® is a weekly medical education show and it is broadcast on public TV throughout the state. “My husband, Rick, had a desire to educate more than he was doing in his office to educate to the state, and this is a fantastic way to reach anybody who’s interested,” says Joanie. But her support of SDPB extended back prior to the launch of Dr. Holm’s program 20 seasons ago. “I know when we moved to South Dakota, one of the first questions I asked was ‘can we get public broadcasting’? Well, luckily we can and the entire state benefits from South Dakota Public Broadcasting. It’s very fortunate that we have that ability for all citizens throughout the state as it was there.” Joanie continues: “I have supported public broadcasting for a long time. There are so many programs that are valuable to me. I’m particularly a radio listener, so I’ve got Morning Edition on all the time. I also want to hear the weekend news I want to hear Wait, Wait…Don’t Tell Me! I love Fresh Air. The Moth – the list is just endless.”
Thank you!
Joanie Holm
The importance of supporting SDPB is close to Joanie’s heart. “I contribute to South Dakota Public Broadcasting on a monthly basis because it’s that important to me. You know, it is in my life every day. There are people who cannot afford to contribute and so those of us who can spread that education, that non-biased information and education to all.” Your support is critical. If you find the programs and mission of SDPB of value, we invite you to reach out and make a financial commitment. You may speak with our Major Giving Team by calling Ryan Howlett or Carol Johnson at (605) 677-5861.
Thank you for making a financial commitment to entertaining and informative programming on SDPB. We appreciate your support. There’s always time to make an additional gift or become a sustaining member of Friends of SDPB. Visit SDPB.org/Donate. May 2022

What To Watch: Explore the impact of Asian Americans, the fastest-growing racial/ethnic group in the United States, on the country’s past, present and future, told through individual lives and personal histories. Asian Americans examines the significant role they have had in shaping American history and identity, from the first wave of Asian immigrants in the 1850s and identity politics during the social and cultural turmoil of the twentieth century to modern refugee crises in a globally connected world. Just before midnight on March 12, 1928, about 40 miles north of Los Angeles, one of the biggest dams in the country blew apart, releasing a wall of water 20 stories high. Ten thousand people lived downstream. The St. Francis Dam disaster not only destroyed hundreds of lives and millions of dollars’ worth of property; it also washed away the reputation of William Mulholland, the father of modern Los Angeles, and jeopardized larger plans to transform the West. PRAIRIE DOC® CELEBRATES 20TH SEASON On September 2, 2021 On Call with the Prairie Doc®, founded by the late Dr. Richard P. Holm, M.D. began its twentieth season of providing truthful, timely, and tested medical information free to the public since 2001 via South Dakota Public Broadcasting, streaming on Facebook and archived on YouTube. Holm’s programs, including television, radio, podcast, newspaper, and social media, continue today thanks to a team of Prairie Docs® from Brookings, South Dakota who, after Holm’s death from pancreatic cancer in March 2020, agreed to help continue his legacy. Andrew Ellsworth, M.D., Kelly Evans-Hullinger, M.D., Debra Johnston, M.D., and Jill Kruse, D.O. author weekly newspaper columns and host radio and television Q&A programs featuring volunteer medical professionals from across the region. A media career for Holm began in the early 1990s after having been a frequent guest discussing medical topics on local AM talk radio KBRK in Brookings. It expanded to include a weekly radio program, TV call-in show broadcast on SDPB and streamed online, and newspaper columns that appear in more than 150 newspapers in South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, and Illinois. The TV program originates from the Yeager Media Center on the SDSU campus. Dr. Holm and his wife Joanie Holm, CNP recognized production of these programs was dependent upon significant on-going private funding and in 2011, they founded the Healing Words Foundation. This 501c3 foundation and its volunteer board of directors, with Joanie Holm as president, serve as the umbrella funding organization for Prairie Doc® programming. Donations to the foundation provide 100 percent of the funding needed to continue the message of the Prairie Doc®. On Call with the Prairie Doc® commemorates 20 years and remembers Dr. Rick Holm in a special episode Thursday, May 5 at 7pm Central, 6 Mountain on SDPB1-TV. The episode repeats Sunday, May 8 at 1pm Central, noon Mountain.

Tourism
As the nation commemorates the 50th anniversary of the passage of Title IX, the law that provided equal opportunities for women and girls to participate in athletic events, SDPB digs deep and asks “Are South Dakota students enjoying the rights afforded them under the rules and regulations of Title IX? How has women’s athletics evolved in the past 50 years?” We talk to those charged with enforcing the rules, and to those who have benefitted from the protections afforded by this landmark legislation. SDPB News reports and In the Moment discusses – on air and online at SDPB.org/Listen.

Celebrating a Century SDPB traces its roots to a radio station founded on the USD campus in 1919. This experimental radio station broadcast Morse code and was the brainchild of Ernest O. Lawrence and his Professor of Physics, Lewis Akeley. The first music and voice transmission from the station occurred on May 29, 1922 and was reported to be a live concert featuring a vocal quartet with piano accompaniment. The program was broadcast from the chapel of University Hall (now called Farber Hall in Old Main at USD). The station began a regular schedule of programming in 1924 with the call letters WEAJ which had been assigned in early 1923. The call letters KUSD were granted in October of 1925. KUSD-AM continued to broadcast into the 1980’s, and in the meantime a network of FM stations was built to cover the entire state.
