CONNS, CAVING, & CLIMBING
Happy Spring!
We have a great May lineup on TV and Radio for you this month, and I have a quick favor to ask of you.
After this long, snowy winter, May finally brings warmth and a desire to get outside and explore. Explore we will, with a tremendous new documentary featuring a fantastic couple from Custer. The Ups and Downs of Herb and Jan Conn follows two caving pioneers as they mapped Jewel Cave in the Black Hills. This empowering story is sure to inspire you on an adventure!
We would also like to invite you to explore Lead as the 25th season of Dakota Life draws to a close. This season has been one of the most viewed as we have featured nine communities across the state.
Now to the favor. SDPB is participating in Public Media Giving Days on May 1st and 2nd. NPR, PBS, and other trusted partners are leading this first-of-itskind effort.
Public Media Giving Days is a nationally coordinated digital effort aimed at attracting new members. As audiences are dispersed among more and more channels, there are fewer opportunities to help them understand how important their support is. With your help, we can talk with them digitally, and grow our support among people who continue to benefit from our content on digital platforms.
I am asking you to please visit SDPB’s website for shareable Public Media Giving Days content that you can post on social media. Nothing is as impactful as a peer-to-peer endorsement, and sharing your support for SDPB goes a long way. Adding new donors to the SDPB family is critical to help keep your public media station strong for generations to come. Of course, if you want to make a gift supporting this effort, we would appreciate that as well.
We hope you enjoy reading this issue as you ring in the new season! As always, we are so thankful for our readers.

HERB AND JAN CONN, THE BLACK HILLS LEGENDS
Originally from the White Mountains of New Hampshire, they traveled the West after Herb's WWII-era Army service. Soon they fell in love with the Black Hills, built an off-the-grid cave dwelling, and set out to establish the Black Hills as a climbing destination.
By 1959, having explored the surficial hills, they were lured into exploring Jewel Cave, where only two miles of passage had been documented. Twenty years later, they had mapped over sixty miles in what is now known as the third largest cave system in the world and helped locate and establish the popular Scenic Tour. The work they started continues. Over two hundred miles have been discovered.
Herb and Jan Conn inspired others in many ways beyond their pioneering work as climbers and cavers. The Ups and Downs of Herb and Jan Conn documents their ascents and descents, and the exploratory, literary, cartographic, artistic, and musical repertory they created -- all of which continue to inspire people with an itch to explore, beneath or above the surface.
Justin Koehler, producer of Ups & Downs, moved back to South Dakota last year after being out of the state for almost 20 years. Since partnering with SDPB, he has produced short films that capture the life of South Dakotans and the state's history.
"When SDPB approached me to edit the Conn documentary, I was a bit embarrassed to say that I never heard of their story before that day. However, it took about five minutes of research to understand why their story was worthy of the big screen." Justin continues, "I admire Herb and Jan's sense of adventure and fearless approach to climbing and caving; both sports in infant stages when they started. Even if the Conns don't want to be labeled as such, their peers view them as pioneers, and to be among the first to do anything takes a tremendous amount of courage— but it takes a lot of intellect, as well."
Herb and Jan did not want to be in the spotlight, but it is hard to ignore the feats that the couple achieved. For them, it wasn't about the competition but rather the adventure. Together, the duo, the engineer and artist, made history. Justin shares what he hopes the audience will take away from the film.
"Herb and Jan lived life on their own terms- no one else's. They pursued their dreams and aspirations regardless of outside judgments. They 'colored outside the lines' of what was considered a 'traditional life' in that time, and they did it not to seek fame or fortune, but to simply do something they loved and enjoyed," says Justin. "You can't help but smile when hearing them together, talking about their amazing adventures."
SDPB is hosting free screenings of The Ups and Downs of Herb and Jan Conn Wednesday, May 10th at 2pm at Westhills Village, 255 Texas Street in Rapid City, and Thursday, May 11th at 6:00 pm and 7:30 pm at the Custer Beacon, 351 Washington Street in Custer.
Watch it on SDPB TV Thursday, May 18th at 8:30 pm Central (7:30 MT).
By Cara Hetland, Director of Radio and Journalism Content at SDPBThe Youth Journalism Pilot Project is a way to give a voice to teens in South Dakota. Twenty-five percent of the state’s population is under the age of 18. Public media does a good job preparing our youngest learners for school, and we engage adults with news and entertainment. There is a disconnect between programming for and about teenagers. Research indicates that teens want the media to stop making assumptions about them and really see them as individuals. These are students who care about issues and want to impact change.
This pilot project has SDPB staff working with students from Sturgis Brown High School to tell a story in their voice about an issue that’s important to them. The students selected isolation and where students find hope. We have met regularly since the end of January, working on interviewing, shooting interviews and b-roll, and writing their script. Brad Van Osdel, Jackie Hendry, and Krystal Schoenbauer are instrumental in lending their areas of expertise to this. Journalism instructor Teresa Froelich is key to working with the students and keeping them on track. The finished feature story is featured on this month’s SD Focus followed by experts discussing the issues raised by the students. Mental wellness is an important topic for our youth and these students bring their peer’s personal stories to light and also bring us hope.

FLASHBACK
MI YOUNG LEE
We're celebrating 25 years of Dakota Life.
Throughout this anniversary season, we have revisited some of the people we've met on the show over the years. In 2007, Dakota Life profiled artist Mi Young Lee of Sioux Falls, where she explained her career, her dreams, and her artwork. We recently caught up with her at her current home in Austin, Texas.
BY BOB BOSSE, FORMER DIRECTOR OF TELEVISION AT SDPB INTERVIEWSDPB: The 2007 story was titled Painting a Dream What is your dream in the current stage of your life?
Lee: I believe I have achieved my dream of becoming a professional artist. I have been fortunate to exhibit my artwork at many exhibits, and it has been rewarding to have my paintings cherished at many clients' homes, offices, and public spaces. I still participate with international exhibits and private commissions. In the current stage of my life, I am focusing on myself, traveling for fun, meeting people with different cultures, and enjoying playing pickleball at a local recreation center when staying at home.
SDPB: Tell me where your career has taken you since our 2007 story.
Lee: Since the story was aired and became available on YouTube, I have encountered more people who have recognized me and my art. As the story covered my young life as an art student and an early part of my career, many of my clients and friends were able to understand my background and connect it with my art to better understand my paintings.
SDPB: Has your inspiration or your point of view changed over time?
Lee: My source of inspiration always has been everyday life, the people that I meet and interact with, and the life events I experience. I try to pause at a juncture of certain life events, take a slice of feeling or emotions, and filter my interpretation on the canvas. The point of view that I maintain is that I make people happy through my paintings, and I try to deliver the message of energy and optimism.
SDPB: Has your symbolism changed over time, and if so, how?
Lee: The tools I use to express my feelings on my canvas are colors, gestures, and motions.
The fundamentals of my symbolism still remain unchanged. For example, childhood or growth is expressed in yellow, while energy is portrayed in red. Over time I have migrated from primary colors to mature colors where I even use the black color to depict positive mystery. As to symbols, I would use circles for connection, squares for the foundations of the current state and also for a passage from the past to future, and gestures done by brushstrokes for various emotions.
Tech Tips: All About QR Codes
QR codes are becoming increasingly popular to quickly and easily access digital content. QR stands for “Quick Response.”
To use a QR code, simply open your smartphone's camera app and point it at the code. Your phone should automatically recognize the code and offer to take you to the linked website or other digital content.
Because QR codes can be used in a variety of ways, they are becoming more popular. You are seeing them in publications (including here in SDPB Magazine), on TV commercials and promotional announcements, at restaurants where you can access their menu, and even on TV cooking shows where you can see the recipe on your phone while watching the show.
Give it a shot now. To the right is a QR code for the Friends of SDPB Membership Page. Open your smartphone, tap the camera icon, and aim it at the page. You’ll see a small yellow box outlining the QR Code. Touch your smartphone screen where the yellow box highlights the code, and it will take you directly to the Friends of SDPB membership website.

FAMILIAR VOICES SAYING HELLO AND GOODBYE
Michel Martin recently became host of NPR’s Morning Edition, joining A Martinez, Leila Fadel, and Steve Inskeep. A familiar voice, Michel has spent more than 25 years as a journalist, coming to NPR in 2006. Since 2015, Michel has been the weekend host of All Things Considered.
In reflecting on her new role, Michel notes, “NPR has both intimacy and reach. Our reporters are all over the world, and we're bringing you stories wherever you are. We all appreciate the trust the audience places in us. I've always wanted to work on a morning show, and I am so excited to work with Steve, Leila, and A to be a part of the great legacy of this program.”
As we welcome Michel to a new role, we sadly bid
another familiar person farewell. After 41 years, Sylvia Poggioli is hanging up her headphones.
The longest-serving reporter on the International Desk is an NPR icon. Sylvia’s wide-ranging, hardhitting interviews, and rich storytelling helped NPR distinguish itself in its early years as a news organization with a deep interest in the wider world. Her work helped build the foundation for what is today NPR’s award-winning International Desk.
Over her career, Sylvia has been honored with many awards. They don’t mean as much as the people she has met. “I’m so thankful to have been part of the lives of so many listeners over the years. It has been an honor and a privilege.”
MATT CARDA
S u PPORTER SPOTLIG h T
A range of things can remind any one person of their mother. We might remember our mother when we see a specific flower, favorite blanket, or a family recipe. For Matt Carda, SDPB serves as this reminder of his mother. A Sioux Falls resident, Matt lost his mother, Mary Ray, in October of 2005. Every year Matt makes a donation to Friends of SDPB in her honor.
"As I've grown older, I have gained an appreciation for the kinds of things my mom listened to, and I think they are important. In honor of my mother, I choose to give on her birthday every year because she helped foster my love for SDPB," says Matt. "I get the satisfaction that I'm helping maintain SDPB and the quality that's included in that. And then, of course, it's a nice tribute to my mom and elicits fond memories of her when I do it."
Matt goes on to say he and his mother shared their love for SDPB over similar things, like quality programming, shows, resources, and more. Like his mother, he finds value in programming and information he can trust.
"It's a trustworthy news source. The programming is quality, and the hosts and content they have on the program are quality. I think that we both probably would think the same thing about it." Matt says, "If you partake in listening to shows, news, or watching anything on TV, I think it's especially relevant then to make SDPB a recipient of a donation."
This May, we are so thankful for all of our mothers, like Matt's, who fostered a love for SDPB from the start. We are also grateful for members like Matt, who partake in the generational relationship with SDPB.
"I've been watchIng and lIstenIng to sdPb for quIte a long tIme, sInce I was a kId. as I've grown older, I've gaIned an aPPrecIatIon for the thIngs that my mom lIstened to."

Duke Kahanamoku’s stardom extended beyond the water and into Hollywood, where he pursued an acting career. Waterman examines Duke’s experience in 1920s Hollywood and the racial discrimination he faced. Duke was only cast in bit roles – most of them racist stereotypes, and many of which went uncredited. Follow the story on American Masters Waterman – Duke: Ambassador of Aloha

History Winston Churchill’s War
A story of how one man, tied to a defining moment in history, became a giant. Without the second World War, Winston Churchill would today be considered a mere footnote: a poor strategist, a disastrous chancellor of the exchequer, and an unreformed Imperialist. The series revisits his early life, explores his speeches, and illustrates the war through rich archival materials and expert interviews.
