SDPB MAGAZINE NO CHALLENGE TOO GREAT NOVEMBER 2022

GREETINGS!

Happy November, readers! We might be nearing the end of the year, but don't fret. We still have so much content to share with you all before 2022 comes to a close. Enjoy a look into this issue, where we meet a studentathlete conquering illness, local documentaries, election coverage, and more.

This month's article focuses on Ashtyn Hatlewick, a high-school athlete who overcomes a frightening diagnosis that leaves her unable to walk. Read about her accomplishing her goals while facing challenges and inspiring the community around her on pages 4-5.

On page 24, read about the three local documentaries you won't want to miss this month: The Pride of the Dakotas, Tales of the Gridiron, and Preserving South Dakota's Pioneer Past. The election is Tuesday, November 8th, and SDPB will provide national coverage and local results online. Sit back, eat some food, and watch your favorites this Thanksgiving on television and radio with programming that will air all day. November is also Native American month; to celebrate this, we will have content all month highlighting the culture of America's Indigenous people.

In the studio, we continue to work on the programming and materials to keep you informed and entertained. We hope you enjoy this issue and a new month of programming!

EDITORIAL NOVEMBER 2022 VOLUME 53 NO. 11

CONQuERING THE uNkNOWN:

One must face many hurdles when entering high school, like new faces, more complex classes, and thoughts of the future. In addition to these frightful barriers, one Leola student had to face the loss of movement in her lower body. A once heavily involved student-athlete encountered a medical mystery leaving her in a wheelchair for months. Her goal was to walk for her middleschool graduation, and she was able to do that and so much more. The story of Ashtyn Hatlewick, her rehabilitation, and her persistent joy throughout the journey is truly inspiring.

Ashtyn is a currently a freshman at Leola High School. Last year, before a significant decline in health, she was involved in numerous sports. Ashtyn explains, "I was just a normal middle schooler, just playing sports like basketball, volleyball, and track. I did cross country last year, and then in November, it kind of all went downhill." What started as some difficulty breathing during a basketball game progressed into an asthma attack that landed Ashtyn in the ER. She was then diagnosed with pneumonia. Ashtyn was treated for it but was still having trouble breathing. Then began the chest pains. Ashtyn's pulse would skyrocket any time she stood, going from 70 to 180. This new development prompted one final ER visit resulting in her being admitted to the hospital for a couple of weeks to run tests and try medications. After two weeks, Ashtyn left the hospital in a wheelchair, unable to walk or stand.

Ashtyn stayed in a wheelchair for about three months. She started a Telemed program online through a specialist in Dallas. Through the coaching provided by the Dallas company and blood pressure medication, Ashtyn could stand again. Standing was the first of many goals Ashtyn set for herself so she could

eventually walk across the stage for her middle school graduation. She began to use a walker in school, taking breaks to refrain from getting dizzy or passing out. Eventually, Ashtyn was able to get rid of the walker completely. Then she set the goal to spend the summer working towards involvement in sports again.

Ashtyn was diagnosed with with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, or POTS. Her specific condition was Hyper-POTS, meaning her heart rate would rise substantially with any change of position. Ashtyn remained hopeful and strong-willed. Not only was she able to walk across the stage for her 8th-grade graduation, but she is back playing volleyball. "That was my main goal. Volleyball has always been my favorite sport so over the summer I was just like, 'I really hope that I'm going to be able to gain all my strength back to be able to get back to volleyball,' and here I am" says Ashtyn.

Ashtyn's strength and joy throughout her difficult journey were noticed by many around her. Doug Hatlewick, Ashtyn's father, says she was a rock throughout the whole situation. He says, "She was way stronger than what I could have ever been with what she went through. She was kind of the one that helped us keep going." Among those who noticed Ashtyn's fortitude was her coach, Leesa Ware, stating, "She represents what the Leola/Frederick community as a whole stands for. Just her strength, her passion, her willingness to succeed. She's just truly, in all of our eyes, a true warrior.”

Ashtyn's story empowers communities, athletes, and anyone who may be struggling with an obstacle in their life. Ashtyn encourages those saying, "Just keep working, work towards the goal. You're going to have your bad days, but it'll get better if you keep working and find something that you're willing to work for."

5 kEEP WORkING, WORk TOWARDS THE GOAL."

DAKOTA

FLASHBACK

MICHAEL FITZMAURICE

We're celebrating 25 years of Dakota Life. Throughout this anniversary season, we'll revisit some of the people we've met on the show over the years. This month, a conversation with Michael Fitzmaurice, South Dakota's lone living Medal of Honor recipient.

Image Courtesy of Rapid City Journal
LIFE 25TH ANNIVERSARY

Michael Fitzmaurice was born in Jamestown, North Dakota and raised in Cavour. Shortly after graduating from high school, he and two friends drove to Sioux Falls together to enlist.

Within months of starting basic training at Fort Lewis, Washington, he was in Vietnam.

In the Spring of 1971, the Second Squadron, 17th Cavalry, 101st Airborne, was guarding the airstrip at Khe Sanh when they came under rocket and mortar attack. Viet Cong infantry moved in for the kill after.

Three grenades landed in the bunker where Fitzmaurice was holed up with a buddy. He threw two back and smothered the last with his flak jacket. Seriously injured and partially blinded, he refused treatment to keep fighting, taking an enemy soldier's rifle when his own was disabled.

How did he do it?

"There was no place to go," says Fitzmaurice. "So, what do you do? I mean, I never figured I'm surviving. But I had my buddy Phil with me, and I was trying to help him out. It's just kind of a matter of just survival."

When the fight was over, Fitzmaurice was evacuated and spent thirteen months recovering from his injuries at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Aurora, Colorado. President Richard Nixon presented him with the Medal of Honor at the White House on October 15, 1973.

SDPB featured Michael Fitzmaurice's story in 1998. Recently, we paid another visit to the humble military hero.

SDPB: How has receiving the Medal of Honor changed your life?

Michael Fitzmaurice: If it wouldn't have been for my experience there, I would've never got to meet all the nice people. With the Medal of Honor, I travel all over and meet nice people.

SDPB: Have you met many other recipients?

MF: We have a convention every year. When I first started going, there was 254 living recipients. So, I met a lot of them -- from World War II, Korea and Vietnam. Right now, I think there's maybe 65 alive. It's a dwindling club, I guess.

They don't talk about war. The stuff it's -- your grandkids and what's going on in everybody's lives, just like a family reunion.

SDPB: You worked at the VA for quite a few years. How did that work out for you?

MF: I worked at a meat packing house in Huron. I worked there at nights when I was in high school and then got on there full time, then went to the military. I was guaranteed a job when I came back, so went back and worked there till they closed up. Then I went out to Reno and tried a VA benefits counselor job, which I really didn't like. Came back home and went back to work for two more packing houses.

Then I got a chance to get in the VA [in Sioux Falls] and I worked there for 23 years as a plumber. In fact, my wife and I both retired from there. She was payroll clerk, and I was a plumber. Every day you got to visit with veterans, and it was just a great job.

SDPB: You've got some notoriety. When you get around the state, do people recognize you?

MF: Yes. Once in a while they do. It kind of makes you feel good. But I mean, I'm no better than anybody else. Everybody done what they were supposed to do.

SDPB: What advice would you have for a young person thinking about enlisting today?

MF: Well, I'd tell them to look into the Air Force. They're going to have some job training when they're done, and it'll be good for them in the long run. There really isn't much need for bullet stoppers once something like that is over. So, get in there and learn something.

SIOUX FALLS KEEPS HUSTLING

Sioux Falls is a city that doesn’t have a real reason to exist. No navigable river. No early industry. No major rail connections to kick it into an early industrial overdrive.

And yet, the city has blossomed into an example of urban living that wins accolades. It also attracts ire from other South Dakota communities who resent its dominance in state politics and the national imagination.

So let’s talk about Sioux Falls. A new book, City of Hustle: A Sioux Falls Anthology, makes the case for the innovation and entrepreneurship that turned a divorce outpost into a financial and medical powerhouse. We’re gathering the editors (Jon Lauck and Patrick Hicks) along with a few of the nearly 50 authors who contributed to City of Hustle in the SDPB Sioux Falls

Studios to record an episode of In the Moment with Lori Walsh in front of a studio audience.

From the history of the city’s public art to the rise of a quirky and improbable culinary ecosystem, we’ll talk about what makes Sioux Falls a magnet for monikers: “Ellis Island of the Prairie,” “Wall Street on the Prairie,” and “Best Little City in America.”

On Thursday, November 17, we kick things off with hors d’oeuvres and drinks at 6:30 p.m. CST and settle in to make radio at 7 p.m. Lori Walsh moderates the conversation. Register on https://bit.ly/City-of-Hustle.

The event is free, but space is limited. You might have to hustle to get your spot. That’s okay, Sioux Falls. You’ve mastered the hustle.

"City of Hustle: A Sioux Falls Anthology" authors and editors gather at the 2022 South Dakota Festival of Books in Brookings

SPOTLIGHT

South Dakota Public Broadcasting exists because of support we receive from individuals who love our programming. Another source of support comes from organizations that partner with us to fulfill our mission. We are grateful for their financial assistance which helps pay for the programs and services SDPB provides. Among our many corporate partners is McCrory Gardens, which was established at South Dakota State University in 1965.

We sat down with Lisa Marotz, Director of Operations, who told us about the garden and the benefits of partnering with SDPB.

Lisa describes McCrory Gardens as a "living museum of plant and tree collections."

What used to be a cornfield is now 25 acres of manicured botanical gardens.

Lisa explains, "The mission statement for McCrory Gardens is connecting people and plants through education, research, discovery, and enjoyment of the naturally built landscape. I understand that South Dakota Public Broadcasting is about education. It's about the experience; it's about outreach. To me, they are a perfect fit." She goes on to say that they value

tradition at the garden, and it aligns well with the tradition at SDPB to provide truthful content. "The programming has been done well; it's been researched. It's not going to be put forth unless it is accurate."

"One of my greatest gifts that I received from South Dakota Public Broadcasting is the opportunity to tell any and all who listen, read, or watch that we have Garden Glow. In 2021, we had over 11,000 visitors to a botanical garden in South Dakota in December to see the lights." Lisa says the partnership between SDPB and McCrory Gardens is personal and mutually beneficial.

"It's our relationships that keep me coming back. I don't have to give it a second thought. It's all generations that come and enjoy the gardens, all generations that enjoy what you have to offer as well through all of your different types of outreach."

We are so thankful for our relationship with our partners like McCrory Gardens. Because of their support, we can bring our viewers the programming and resources we do, and in return, we can promote businesses that help our community and state flourish.

“They come from small places and they do a big thing.” SDPB presents a documentary about the marching band at SDSU, The Pride of the Dakotas. For over 100 years the band has represented the school and the spirit of South Dakota to people across the state and the nation.

This thirty-minute documentary tells the stories of the lives and preserved homes of several prominent South Dakota pioneer families. Each family arrived with very little in terms of material goods, but each family prospered during the process of establishing communities, building political institutions, and promoting education in the Territory and later, in the fledgling State of South Dakota.
