It’s a scene that plays outside most South Dakota high schools every fall: as the late afternoon sun turns autumnal gold over the grass and turf of practice fields, coaches whistle and shout to football and soccer players running drills and practice games. At one such Friday practice in Garretson earlier this fall, head football coach Chris Long and his players were in a bit of a pickle. With only a week before their first game, the Blue Dragons were on the turf working their Points After Touchdown, or PAT. They needed to make some decisions about their kicker. “We’d had some guys kick in practice a little bit, and they looked like they could maybe do it, but we knew we had to make some changes because one of our kickers was our holder and another was our possible snapper,” says Long. “So, we went to PAT and we failed miserably. We just couldn’t get the ball through.” Meanwhile, on the grass field nearby, head girls soccer coach Amber Williamson and her team were practicing when the time had come for the two teams to switch fields. “Coach Long, as we’re passing between the two sports, says, ‘Hey, we’re struggling to find a consistent kicker,” says Williamson. “‘Do you have anyone on the soccer team who could kick a field goal?’ And I said, ‘Well, we’ve got quite a few who could try for you. That’s what we do!’” Long had seen the soccer

players kick before during homecoming at the powderpuff football game. “Those girls end up kicking PATs,” says Long. “I asked and I was mostly joking, but halfinterested. And Coach Williamson said, ‘Well, I’ve got some girls who’ve got really strong legs.’” Four soccer players gave it a try, kicking off the tee. “A couple of the girls did a nice job, Jenna (VanHolland) being one of them,” says Long. Next Long ran the whole play. “We upped the ante with snap, place, hold. They struggled for the first two or three kicks, but Jenna, literally after the second or third time, got her timing down, her footwork down. She made everything. She kicked and we got it done. I said, ‘I know this is quick to make a decision, but I’m interested if you’re interested.’” Jenna, a junior, was. “Right away, she was like, ‘I want to do it,’” says Williamson. “She’s a go-getter, both on the soccer field and a football field. She just right away bounced right in.” VanHolland conferred with her parents. Jenna has played soccer since she was four-years old and her mother had concerns. “My dad (Travis) was all for it,” says VanHolland. “And my mom (Angela) was like, ‘What if you get hurt for soccer?’ She was a little hesitant. She called both of my coaches and was like, ‘Are you sure this is the right thing to do?’ She reached out to a ton of her friends and was like, ‘Should I let my daughter do this?’ But she ended up being okay with it. She probably saw that first game, too, and was like, ‘Okay, this is....’” Angela VanHolland actually didn’t see that first game – at least not her daughter’s kick. Feeling

a little too nervous, Angela went behind the bleachers and listened for the crowd’s reaction. Jenna was nervous too, but support poured in before her debut in a game a mere five practice days after she signed on. “I don’t know how many family members reached out to me and told me, ‘I got your back,’ and, ‘You’re going to do great,’” says Jenna. “I have so much support from all my family and friends. So thankful for all that. And every time I step out on the field, I have eight head taps. I can count them. Some of them are harder than others. Some of them I maybe close my eyes, but I’ve eight head taps on the way in and on the way out, regardless if I make it or not. I couldn’t do it without all of them. You know what I mean? I can’t kick without those points first, so couldn’t do it without them.” Coach Long addressed the nerves and unknowns in the pregame. “Before the game, we sat as a group and I said, ‘we’re really happy to have you guys here,’” says Long. “And I talked about some of the heroes I had on this team. There’s some guys that really did a lot of good things in the off-season. They’re my heroes. And I said Jenna being here when it’s really a nowin situation for her. I mean, she’s putting herself out there in front of everybody, and if she doesn’t make it, people expect that.” As luck would have it, the game went into overtime. “It transpired that we had the chance to kick the game-winning PAT,” says Long. “We sent her out there. A great snap, a great hold. And then she absolutely drilled that one.” Jenna’s kick won Garretson the game 43-42. Mom Angela knew it went well when she heard the crowd

roar from her spot behind the bleachers. Jenna remembers the before and the after. “My head was totally blank,” says Jenna. “I just remember trying to not to think about it because if I think about it, I knew it was not going to go well. I just remember walking out in the field, and all the boys were really supportive and then ran out after I kicked it. Everybody was jumping up in the air and was all over me in this huge huddle. And I got so many hugs from all the guys and it was the best.” Coach Williamson says Jenna is the full package. “On the field, Jenna is a tremendous competitor. She plays usually a full 80-minute game for us. She’s fiery. She is aggressive. Any ball in the air, she’s going to do everything she can to get there. Off the field, she is quiet. Cool, calm, and collected. But she’s a great student, a great student athlete. She’s just kind to others. I mean, she’s just a great all-around kid.” “I think at a young age soccer taught me what hard work meant,” says Jenna. “I just always enjoyed having a place that I could work hard in and soccer taught me that. I mean, that’s my place. I never even thought that was an option to play on the football team, not going to lie. It kind of felt like a joke at first and it kind of ended up working out. It was crazy. I’m not going to lie. Going to the first football game with a bunch of boys is eye opening. And ever since the first game it’s consistently gotten better.” SDPB’s Nate Wek contributed to this story. State Football Championships are live November 11-13 on SDPB1 and SD.net. In arid regions across southern Kenya, the waterhole, created by elephants and termites, is central to life. Every visit is charged with tension; a waterhole is the perfect place for predators to wait in ambush. That is the traditional view, but there is an entire community of creatures that call the waterhole home, many of whom live at an elephant’s toenail height such as frogs, dung beetles and chameleons. Nature The Elephant and the Termite is the remarkable story of the relationship between Africa’s largest and smallest and the unique wildlife community they support. The midwives are leading busy lives on Season 10 of Call the Midwife. It’s 1966, and it’s a testing time, but there’s excitement, too, as the women’s rights movement intensifies. Dr. Turner and Sister Frances help a motherto-be who refuses medical care, Nonnatus House struggles to come to terms with Nancy’s revelation, and we finish the tenth season by taking a celebratory look back at 10 years of the show.

As teenagers, Valente Valenzuela and his brother Manuel volunteered and were sent to fight in Vietnam. They came home decorated, but also physically and psychologically scarred. Now 50 years later, they’ve received deportation notices. Shocked and confused, the brothers soon learn they are not alone; thousands of American military veterans have been or are in danger of being deported because of misdemeanor offenses committed after completing their service. VOCES American Exile shows Valente and Manuel deciding to don their uniforms for one last fight — to “leave no soldier behind” and bring deported veterans and their families back home. An all-new episode of Dakota Life premieres Thursday, November 4, at 8pm (7 MT) on SDPB1 and SDPB.org. Rebroadcasts Sunday, November 7, at 1pm (noon MT).

Near the traditional homelands of the Arikara (Sahnish and Hundi), Mandan and Hidatsa, Mobridge is situated near the Missouri River, Lake Oahe and the Standing Rock Indian Reservation just west of U.S. Highway 83. Scherr-Howe Event Center Also known as the Mobridge City Auditorium, the ScherrHowe Event Center was built as a WPA project in the 1930s. It is home to 10 early murals from renowned Native American artist Oscar Howe. Howe painted the murals in 1942, starting on April 18 and finishing on June 22. On June 5, Howe was inducted into the US Army at Fort Snelling, but he received a 14-day furlough to finish the project. The murals were restored in 2014. Additionally, the venue is also named after Bill and Jim Scherr, who were Olympic medalists in wrestling. Both brothers are also in the SD Sports Hall of Fame. The building has been on the National Historic Registry since 1986. Tumblin’ In In the fall of 1989, Mobridge residents had to dig themselves out of a massive tumbleweed invasion that buried the town, attracting national attention to the curious storm. SDPB revisits the “Attack of the Tumbleweeds.” Cowdogs Are Go-To Ranch Hands Man’s best friend can also be their best help. Mobridge ranch manager David Dagley relies on a team of trained cow dogs to help him manage cattle on the 10,000-acre AC Land and Cattle Ranch.

Black holes are the most enigmatic and exotic objects in the universe. They’re also the most powerful, with gravity so strong it can trap light. And they’re destructive, swallowing entire planets, even giant stars. Anything that falls into them vanishes… gone forever. Now, astrophysicists are realizing that black holes may be essential to how our universe evolved— their influence possibly leading to life on Earth and, ultimately, us. In NOVA NOVA Universe: Black Holes, astrophysicist and author Janna Levin takes viewers on a journey to the frontiers of black hole science. PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS SDPB2-TV America ReFramed On a Knife Edge is a coming-of-age story of George Dull Knife, a Lakota teenager growing up on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. George is being raised by his single father, Guy Dull Knife, Jr. – a veteran of both Vietnam and the Occupation of Wounded Knee – and is inspired by his family legacy of survivors and leaders to help shape his own generation’s fight for social justice. His growing political awareness leads him on a collision course with the police and the reservation’s tribal council. But as he matures, George discovers that the responsibilities of manhood are more complex than simply confronting authority and he is forced to balance duty to his people with that of his immediate family.

In 1937, the Hindenburg airship exploded into flames upon landing and 36 people were killed in the horrifying crash, shocking the world and sealing the fate of airship travel forever. For decades, the exact cause of the Hindenburg’s crash has remained a mystery. Now, recently discovered letters, maintenance reports and company memos reveal the unfortunate errors that led to the disaster. More than 80 years later, Secrets of the Dead Hindenburg’s Fatal Flaws talks with experts who believe had critical construction flaws been fixed at the time, the airship might not have exploded.

How does a father find purpose in pain? Before the explosive global uprising condemning the murder of George Floyd, there was a small town in Missouri that rose up in protest after the Aug 9, 2014 killing of Black teenager Michael Brown Jr. by a white police officer. It was this small town and its people that propelled Black Lives Matter to international prominence and inspired a new global civil rights movement. Independent Lens Ferguson Rises tells this father’s personal story of seeking justice and healing that hasn’t been told until now. It is widely believed that notorious Bronx-based gangster and bootlegger Dutch Schultz buried a fortune estimated to be worth more than $50 million somewhere in New York’s Catskill Mountains prior to his death in 1935. Schultz was gunned down and died without revealing where the treasure was buried, spawning a mystery that has endured for nearly a century. Now, 85 years later, three groups of treasure hunters, armed with modern technology and decades worth of intensive research, race to uncover new leads in hopes of finding Schultz’s missing treasure. In Secrets of the Dead Gangster’s Gold, join these three groups of treasure hunters as they follow the trail of this unsolved mystery toward the discovery of a lifetime. Stel Kline New Local Morning Edition Host

SDPB welcomes Stel Kline as the new local on-air host for Morning Edition. Kline was born and raised in Schenectady, New York. “Schenectady is a Haudenosaunee word for ‘The Place Beyond the Pines.’ You may be quicker to recognize the city by another catch phrase, ‘The City that Lights the World’ from housing General Electric’s headquarters,” says Kline. They attended the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore and lived in Baltimore for over 10 years. They began audio and radio work while interning at WYPR, Baltimore’s local NPR affiliate, later working as a freelance producer in Washington, DC, Maryland and Virginia. They’ve worked with On the Media, This American Life, and Malcolm Gladwell’s Revisionist History, among others. “What motivates me to work in public media is implied in the name,

that content coming out of public media is to have been created for the benefit of its listeners – topics the community needs to know about but don’t necessarily have the privilege of having the time and the resources to investigate themselves.” “The work I’m most proud of from the last two years has been through my neighborhood’s mutual aid project, Better Waverly Mutual Aid (BWMA),” says Kline. “To highlight one great achievement, our neighborhood group was able to raise over $20,000 in less than three weeks to get 26 homeowners off of the city’s tax sale list – a historically predatory and racist process of tax enforcement.” Kline looks forward to the transition to South Dakota. “It is always a comfort to hear a dynamic local voice broadcasting between segments, there to provide continuity that brings you back to your sense of place,” says Kline. “It’s already been a great pleasure to get to know Vermillion and the state of South Dakota more intimately. With hosting Morning Edition, I am excited to be the voice who helps start their day, bringing warmth and understanding to the way they experience the news.” Kline adds: “If you see me around Vermillion, please say hi!”

Thank you to everyone who supported SDPB during our Fall Radio Drive. The generosity of our new and sustaining supporters keeps SDPB news and programs commercial-free and accessible to all South Dakotans. 20 20

Science and Technology in South Dakota This November, SDPB Spotlight illuminates science and technology across the state. In a world where science has become so advanced many people no longer understand the basics, the risks of not-knowing have also escalated. We get to know South Dakota scientists who are changing the world through research, exploration, invention, and innovation. We talk climate resilience, stem cells and cloning, cybersecurity, space exploration, and ethics with South Dakotans who understand the science and can explain it. See those stories and more at SDPB.org/Spotlight. We want you to be part of the story. Share your story by leaving a voicemail at 605-951-0740. During World War I, not all Native Americans were even citizens of the United States, let alone eligible to be drafted. Yet, more than 12,000 indigenous men volunteered. Even in Vietnam, an unpopular war, 90 percent of the 42,000 Native people who served were volunteers. Why would Native men and women put their lives on the line for the very government that took their homelands? The Warrior Tradition tells the inspiring, complicated stories of Native American warriors from their own points of view – stories of service and pain, of courage and fear.
