GREETINGS!
Happy October readers. I can hardly believe we are entering the 10th month of this year. Welcome back to my most treasured part of the magazine, where we jumpstart your anticipation for the upcoming pages.
Our feature article this month is focused on Native American programming to provide our readers with a moment to reflect on why this representation is vital to our society. In addition to highlighting our programming surrounding this topic, we will also dive a little into Native American Day, which lands on October 10th, and how our state observes that day. Check out this story on pages 4-5.
Along with the cooler weather and shorter days comes high school sports, which you can look forward to seeing covered over several magazine issues from now until the spring. Behind the scenes, we have been working on new children's material, which comes with a new television schedule. Read all about it on page 29. Last but certainly not least, we will offer election coverage to keep you updated on the latest news and candidates before election day on November 8th.
Here in the office, we continue to plan and work on the programming and materials for this season to be an entertaining one. As always, we hope you enjoy this issue, and we look forward to pressing on!
Cheers,

CELEBRATING NATIVE AMERICAN DAY
With encouragement by the late journalist Tim Giago (Oglala Lakota) and others, in 1989 Gov. George S. Mickelson proposed at "Year of Reconciliation" and renaming Columbus Day as Native American Day. That legislation passed unanimously and South Dakota became the first state to recognize the indigenous people of South Dakota with an official holiday. Since then, ten more states have officially recognized the second Monday of October as Native American Day. In recognition of this holiday, and in anticipation of Native American Heritage Month in November, SDPB offers programming to help honor, recognize, and celebrate our nation's First People.
Sousa on the Rez: Marching to the Beat of a Different Drum
This documentary looks at the vibrant tradition of brass band music. The phrase “Native American music” may not suggest tubas and trumpets, but march music has been a part of Native culture for over a century.
Featuring two contemporary Indian community bands: the Iroquois Indian Band of upstate New York and the Fort Mojave Tribal Band of Needles, California.

We're celebrating 25 years of Dakota Life. Throughout this anniversary season, we'll revisit some of the people we've met on the show over the years. This month, a conversation with Paul LaRoche, the founder of Brulé.
Images Courtesy of Brulé FLASHBACKLaRoche founded Brulé after discovering his Lakota roots and incorporating them into his sound. He was adopted at birth and raised in Minnesota by nonNative parents. In 1993, his wife, Kathy, discovered his biological family, and he was reunited with them on the Lower Brulé Sioux Indian Reservation. A couple of years later, he started Brulé, and the group has been touring heavily ever since. Dakota Life featured the Brulé story in 2007 and recently, we touched base with Paul LaRoche again.
SDPB: You've done a lot of touring through the years. Do you have your favorite stops?
PL: I like to say that our most exotic performance was we were invited to play over in Saudi Arabia, and that was off the chart. Kind of our home base would be the Midwest. All these years, I would say our most popular stop has been the Black Hills. There have been times we spent the whole summer. The South Dakota audience has always been our strongest fan base.
SDPB: You played in rock bands before Brulé. What kind of music were you playing?
PL: I like to say that I was a product, musically, of the sixties and seventies. I played a Hammond organ, synthesizers, pianos, and anything that had a keyboard. We had a tendency back in those days because rock and roll music was starting to take on kind of a heavier edge. There were groups like Deep Purple, the Stones, and Manfred Mann. The Dave Clark Five came over here and had a bunch of hits. But they had a keyboard player that stood up. Prior to that, a lot of keyboard players were sitting down. This guy stood up. Mike Smith was his name. When you're a young kid, you see that you go, ‘I want to do that,’ so that was one of the things that I latched onto.
I had the tendency to lean more towards kind of the heavy rock, and that carried right on through the years up in Brulé... a lot of the songs have got some of that early rock keyboard sound built in. But of course, these days, nobody really recognizes that as a hard rock sound, but back in the sixties and seventies, that was a cutting-edge sound, especially that heavy organ sound.
SDPB: How did the original members of Brulé come together?
PL: You know, it started so nonchalantly. The very first performance, I was going to perform as a soloist. Before we got to the gig, which would've been in '95, we were scheduled to play at a mall over in Rapid City. Before I could leave, my daughter Nicole said, 'Hey dad, if you could write some of these melodies down, I'll play my flute with you.' And that was the start. So, it started out as a duo. Shortly after that, our son, Shane, came back from college. He said, 'Hey, you guys should have a guitar in the band.' He taught himself to play guitar while he was finishing up college. So now there's three of us. And we got a drummer from out in the Pine Ridge area; Chuck Davis was his name. He was our first traditional drummer. So now we have a band. That's the configuration that we started out with; I would say between 95 and 97.
We're still a four-piece group, but we've changed a little bit. Shane has moved from guitar to drums. Nicole is still the lead instrumentalist playing the flute. I do multiple keyboards and do some vocals. We started to bring some dancers along because we had family members who were dancers.
SDPB: Was the dance element choreographed at the start, or just spontaneous?
PL: When we started out, it evolved from just kind of winging it and a little bit of chaos on stage. What we found out is that with the traditional dancers -- it was, and is still to this day, a little bit difficult for us to control because traditional Native American dancers on a contemporary stage has never been done before. It was new. Musically, there was a timing factor. Today, it's a totally choreographed show. What we've tried to do is take traditional Native American dance and let it be organic. We needed to find how to come up with that Broadway discipline without trying to destroy the organic part of being a Native American dancer. It took a lot of work. We just had to carve that out where nothing existed before. Contemporary Native American dance is a totally new discipline.

The SDPB Legacy Society is composed of generous and forward-thinking donors who will support our long-term success through a planned gift. Each option gives our supporters the opportunity to leave a mark on this vital community resource.

SUPPORTER SPOTLIGHT
What kind of legacy do you hope to leave? Some have given a lot of thought to this question. A thoughtfully prepared estate plan can safeguard finances and inheritance, as well as guide future health decisions, provide for loved ones and create a legacy. Estate plans help protect things that matter most. Now is a great time to put your mind at ease and plan for the future today. Kitty Kinsman and Steve Zellmer of Rapid City have included SDPB in their estate plans and become part of the Legacy Society.
Our Legacy Society is comprised of people who want to ensure that South Dakota Public Broadcasting can remain a trusted source for news and stories by continuing to support our mission into the future. Kitty and Steve considered sustainability and value when making plans for their estate.
“Our philosophy of providing funding that is sustainable is the motivator. Given how much we have benefited over our lifetimes from public broadcasting, this is a way for us to give back over the long term, to see that people who come after us have the same benefits,” says Kitty.
Steve, Kitty’s husband, explains why SDPB and our mission are something that they find so essential to continue to support: "When you look at things that you want to support in life, you try to think of things that bring a lot of good to all kinds of people, and South Dakota Public Broadcasting is available to everybody. I think carrying on this mission in the future is really important to South Dakota, given our rural nature and state."
Kitty and Steve are passionate about their ability to give. Kitty says, “It's everyone doing their part. Everybody has a way to give, whether it's through the annual memberships, the matching program, or the endowment. If everybody gives a little bit of their treasure, then the longterm sustainability of South Dakota Public Broadcasting is going to be well-served.”
We are so thankful for all who donate to our mission, especially those who have thought about how they will impact us even after they are gone. People like Kitty and Steve, and all members of the Legacy Society, allow Friends of SDPB to continue supporting a valuable resource of news, entertainment, and educational resources.
“SOUTH DAKOTA HAS A LOT OF SQUARE MILES AND NOT A LOT OF PEOPLE IN THOSE SQUARE MILES. SO, SDPB WITH ITS STATEWIDE COVERAGE IS PART OF THE FABRIC THAT KNITS US ALL TOGETHER AND ALLOWS PEOPLE ALL OVER THE STATE TO PARTICIPATE.”
-STEVE ZELLMER
