This is my favorite part of the magazine because I get to speak to you personally and help build anticipation for the coming content-filled pages.

This month our feature article will celebrate our beloved series, Dakota Life, which has been telling South Dakota stories for the past 24 years and is celebrating its 25th season. To kick it all off, we’ll be visiting the town of Sisseton for the premiere of their own episode. Read the story on page 4 and then flip to page 11 for more info on the Sisseton screening.

Additionally, we want to meet you! You might be asking how this is possible, and I’m here to give you the answer. Throughout this month we will be hosting numerous in-person events where you’re invited to meet the SDPB staff, participate in activities, or get a preview to upcoming content. Information regarding this can be found on pages 28-29. Behind the curtain, we are looking forward to fall programming, including high school sports and general election news. c ELEBRATIN g 25 y EARS OF DAKOTA LIFE

Dakota Life has brought viewers a personal look into histories all over the state of South Dakota since September of 1998. The first three episodes focused on stories like the Jewel of the Black Hills, where we explored the Opera House of Lead; Prairie Spires, where we highlighted the architecture and history of Prairie churches; and Dakota Dogs, where we met working dogs across the state. Before it was known as Dakota Life, it was known by two other titles: Scrapbook and South Dakota Outdoor Guide which focused on all things outdoors including fishing, skiing, snowmobiling, and more. 25 years ago, the focus and mission of this series shifted after a 4-year hiatus. Thus, what viewers now know as Dakota Life was born.

It’s that time of year again. This month we kickstart the beginning of the 25th season of Dakota Life. Every year for the past 24 years, we’ve ventured out to find stories and discover the history of the many towns across the state that contribute to the charming character of South Dakota. This season we venture into 9 towns to learn what it is about these places that makes them a treasure to our state. Featured in the 2022-2023 season are the towns of Sisseton, Leola, Mission, Parkston, Miller, Belle Fourche, Lead, Buffalo, and Howard.

Greg Beesley, one of Dakota Life’s Segment Producers, gets to have a hands-on experience with the show, traveling from town to town capturing the special aspects that people enjoy seeing. Beesley shares that one of the most exciting parts of his job is getting to premiere the finished product with the residents of these locations and watch them light up at the thought of their stories being shared. “For me, Dakota Life means telling all of the amazing stories we do and getting to educate other South Dakotans about parts of the state they may not have visited and hopefully entice them to take a trip and visit a different part of our great state,” says Beesley. As we mark this anniversary and look ahead to 25 more years of Dakota Life we hope to continue sharing the stories that make each community unique, and that make each community uniquely South Dakotan. Watch season 25 and discover something new about your neighbors. We begin the year with a visit to Sisseton.

What perhaps is more loved than even the many remarkable places and people featured on this show is the life behind it. Julie Overgaard, Executive Director of South Dakota Public Broadcasting describes the show as such: “Dakota Life tells the story of who we are. The history that shaped us. The people who influence us. The places that inspire us. The interests we share. Dakota Life helps me find joy in being South Dakotan!” Non-news and featuredriven, Dakota Life checks the boxes of magazine shows, but there is a lot of work happening behind the scenes to make sure you can experience the spark of South Dakota.

Latino Americans is a landmark three-part documentary that is the first major documentary for television to chronicle the rich and varied history and experiences of Latinos, who has helped shape the United States over the last 500-plus years. It is a story of people, politics, and culture, large in scale and deep in its reach. The changing and yet repeating context of American history provides a backdrop for the drama of individual lives. The documentary features interviews with an array of individuals, including entertainer Rita Moreno, MexicanAmerican author and commentator Linda Chávez, and Cuban singer and entrepreneur Gloria Estefan.

He will likely be the last. As land prices soar, the centuries old tradition of small-scale family run ranches is fading out, yet still holds relevance for the American way of life. The film follows Max Robison through a visual journey of changing seasons in a life and process that is both raw and genuine.

A letter written by a son to his father as he prepares to go off to fight in World War Two, Ride Away depicts the last day on the family farm in Haakon County, South Dakota. Produced and directed by Justin Koehler, the grandson of Theron Koehler, a veteran of the war. Produced by local filmmaker, Justin Koehler, who produced the award-winning films Floating Horses: The Life of Casey Tibbs, and The Buffalo King, about Scotty Philip’s efforts to preserve the American Bison.

Watch cowboys and cowgirls as they drive a herd of approximately 1,300 buffalo during the Annual Custer State Park Buffalo Round up. Not only is this a spectacular sight to see, but it is also a critical management tool in maintaining this strong and healthy herd. She has a master’s from San Francisco State University in Broadcasting and Electronic Communication Arts and has worked for more than seven years in the radio industry in various positions. She is also a U.S. Air Force veteran. In her spare time, she loves ballroom and social dancing, hiking with her dog, and spending time with her family.
