Bob Garfield

Radio Host, Author Joins Books Festival SDBookFestival.com

Join SDPB’s special guest, Bob Garfield, as he discusses his latest book, “Can’t Buy Me Like” at the South Dakota Festival of Books in Deadwood. The annual Festival brings writers and readers together Sept. 20-22 and SDPB participates throughout with special guest Garfield, a special Dakota Midday broadcast and a booth. Garfield’s presentation will be Saturday, Sept. 21, at 10am at the Masonic Temple in Deadwood. His new book, co-written by Doug Levy, discusses social media and how companies must create an “authentic customer relationship” in order to be successful. Garfield also will participate in author gatherings at the event and be one of the panelists for a discussion on “What’s Next for News” on Saturday, Sept. 21, at 3pm at the Deadwood Mountain Grand. Garfield is one of the hosts of On the Media, a national program that airs on Sundays on SDPB Radio. He is an author, columnist, critic, essayist, pundit, and international lecturer who specializes in quirky Americana. Other recent works include “Bedfellows,” “The Chaos Scenario,” and “And Now a Few Words From Me.” As the festival gets under way, SDPB Radio will feature several authors with a special Dakota Midday Book Club program at Noon (11 MT) on Friday, Sept. 20, with Host Karl Gehrke. SDPB staff will be on hand throughout with a booth at the Deadwood Mountain Grand. The annual Festival of Books is a project of the South Dakota Humanities Council. SDPB Magazine is a benefit of your membership in the Friends of SDPB. Thank you for supporting great programming on SDPB. SDPB Magazine is available to be delivered via email each month if you prefer. You’ll receive it a few days earlier and help Friends of SDPB control costs. Please contact Friends at 800-333-0789 if you’d like to switch to electronic delivery.

Reserve a Time with StoryCorps

Tell us your story. StoryCorps’ Mobile Booth will be parked at Main Street Square, in Rapid City, from Sept. 20-Oct. 16. Reservations open on Sept. 6 and can be scheduled by visiting SDPB.org/StoryCorps, StoryCorps.org, or calling 800-850-4406. StoryCorps collects and preserves the personal stories of thousands of people to tell the story of America, and now people in Rapid City and the Black Hills have a chance to add theirs. Here’s how it works. Two people – friends, spouses, relatives, whatever – come to the booth; one “interviews” the other as he or she tells the story. Sometimes participants interview each other, or tell a story together. There are no limits to what you can talk about – the result can be a snapshot of a shared history, a love story, or a story of heroism. It can be a record of the way we live now, or have lived in the past. At the end of the session, participants receive a free broadcast-quality CD to share with family and friends; a second copy will be archived at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress.

An interview takes place in StoryCorps’ Mobile Booth.

StoryCorps selections regularly air on NPR’s Morning Edition on Friday, and on Weekend Edition on Saturday. Several stories from Rapid City will air on SDPB Radio over the course of the visit. StoryCorps’ MobileBooth visited Sioux Falls in June 2007, recording dozens of South Dakota stories for the archives. Over the past 10 years, StoryCorps has recorded nearly 50,000 stories nationwide. In Rapid City, StoryCorps is made possible by YOU with your membership in the Friends of SDPB.

The series airs during Dakota Digest Sept. 23-27 at 7:35am (6:35 MT) and 5:30pm (4:30 MT), and on the one-hour Dakota Midday program on Friday, Sept. 27, at Noon (11 MT). Topics include: • Architecture and Healing: New hospitals incorporate art in design, like the Avera Behavioral Health Building, the Sanford Children’s Castle, The Heart Hospital, and the Avera Cancer Institute. • Writing and Healing: Writing workshops are being used to help veterans heal.

Art projects by patients, and art on the walls, are part of the healing process.

Sept. 12: The Lakota Voice Project

To bring attention to suicide issues on the reservations, the Lakota Voice Project gave small handheld cameras to junior high students and asked them to videotape life on the reservation and express what “hope” looks like to them.

Sept. 19: Human Trafficking

Human trafficking has received a lot of attention over the past year. Focus will

take a closer look at the issue here in South Dakota and what is being done to stop it and prosecute those found guilty.

Sept. 26: Infrastructure – Bedroom Communities

South Dakota’s larger towns are seeing growth when it comes to business. However, many families are choosing to live in smaller communities just outside of the larger cities. Piedmont, Hermosa, Hartford and Humboldt are examples of “bedroom communities” that are seeing new homes and no new businesses, leaving the cities short on sales tax to pay for infrastructure. The Voices of Workers Help Mark Labor Day SDPB Radio: Monday, Sept. 2, Noon (11 MT)

A montage of voices come together to give us a look at the state of work in Hearing Voices Nine to Five, airing on SDPB Radio on Labor Day at Noon (11 MT). The special, hosted by Ann Heppermann and Kara Oehler, includes the work we do, from Wall Street traders to taxi cab drivers to off-thebooks in the underground economy. Some of the excerpts include: • Filling out a job application.

• • • • • •

Conversations with cab drivers. Cleaning up after crime and tragedy. A “professional” golfball diver. The path to becoming a bullfighter. The challenges of a bra saleswoman. Trading technique on the floor of the New York Mercantile Exchange. Hearing Voices Nine to Five is part of a series of themed compilations of broadcasts, podcasts, slam poets, sound-portraits, features, found-sound, audio art and documentaries. September 2013 19

Funders

Program Funders recognize the importance of lifelong learning by providing support for SDPB programs in South Dakota. Program funders give $5,000 or more in support of SDPB programs. Thank you.

Mr. Steve and friends dance and sing at FamilyFest in Sioux Falls.

PBS Kids Brings Mr. Steve to Sioux Falls A grant from PBS Kids brought PBS Kids Host Mr. Steve to Sioux Falls in July. Mr. Steve sang songs, signed autographs and posed for pictures at the FamilyFest at the W.H. Lyon Fairgrounds. Thank you. Hundreds of children and parents enjoyed the show and stopped by the SDPB table to learn about the network during the day of fun at the festival.

Steve Roslonek has been writing and performing his award-winning music for kids and families for the past 11 years. In 2008, he took on the role of “Mr. Steve,” cohost of the PBS Kids preschool programming, including Curious George, Clifford the Big Red Dog, Dragon Tales, and Super Why. Steve performs original interactive songs that reinforce the day’s curriculum theme.

A big thank you to the viewers of SDPB Television who made our Festival fundraiser in August a big success. The event brought in 277 pledges, including 218 new members for the Friends of SDPB, for a total of $61,168. The Dalesburg Team, Pi Beta Phi, Lewis & Clark Theatre Company, Vermillion Rotary and Vermillion Lions Club provided phone volunteers. Walmart of Vermillion provided refreshments. In addition, 43 people joined the Evergreen program, bringing the network an additional $7,767 through a generous matching program funded through a gift from Van D. and Barbara B. Fishback of Brookings. The gift allows a match of up to $250 for all Friends of SDPB donors who opt for

automatic renewal (Evergreen Members). In addition, the Brookings couple are matching all new Visionary Society members ($1,000+ annual giving) with a $1,000 gift. The Fishbacks chose to fund the match program to support public broadcasting in South Dakota and help strengthen the organization, according to Friends of SDPB Vice President of Development Ryan Howlett. “They wanted to find a way to give back to the state in a way that could impact all South Dakotans.”
