The Words of Frederick Douglass Fellow Citizens, I am not wanting in respect for the fathers of this republic. The signers of the Declaration of Independence were brave men. They were great men, too great enough to give frame to a great age. It does not often happen to a nation to raise, at one time, such a number of truly great men. The point from which I am compelled to view them is not, certainly, the most favorable; and yet I cannot contemplate their great deeds with less than admiration. They were statesmen, patriots and heroes, and for the good they did, and the principles they contended for, I will unite with you to honor their memory....

GLOBAL ICON,
As word spread of his death from a recent illness, the uniform reaction in the communities in which he was known was an acknowledgement of a great loss. You could rarely find anything that he didn’t have an opinion on. He was a well-read student of Africana Studies and Black History. DR. WILLIE L. MORROW PASSES By Dr. Tayari Howard Dr. Willie L. Morrow, a global icon, pioneer, author, chemist, publisher, and community activist passed away Wednesday, June 22nd in his home surrounded by family. He was 82 years old. Local television stations and social media outlets immediately lit up with condolences to the family and accolades towards his accomplishments. Noted for turning the “impossible” into the “possible,” Dr. Morrow left a plethora of inventions, textbooks, celebrity, political, and global relationships far too numerous to name. However, some stand out as exceeding a nation’s expectations and will probably never be duplicated by an African American again. He is listed in history and hair books as one of the top seven hair care pioneers such as Annie Turnbo Malone, Madam C. J. Walker, Marjorie Stewart Joyner, Art Dyson, Henry Morgan, and Joe L. Dudley. CAUTIOUS PARENTS WEIGH DECISION TO GIVE CHILDREN UNDER FIVE COVID VACCINE
By Edward Henderson California Black Media Antonio and Tenaja Kizzie, a San Diego area couple, are parents of a three-year-old daughter. Although both parents are vaccinated and boosted, the Kizzies have reservations about giving their toddler the COVID-19 vaccine the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended last week for children younger than five years old. “It’s one thing to feel like her body is still developing and growing. She’s been vaccinated for everything else for things that have been around for
years. It’s a little scary thinking about something that’s new. We don’t want to jump in right now,” Tenaja told California Black Media. “We just want to wait a little bit and see the side effects for other kids in her age group and reassess from there.” Her husband chimed in. “We believe in the science, we believe vaccines work, but when it comes to the under-fives, just being a parent we’re a bit more hesitant to give her the vaccine so far. We’re waiting to see how it goes with other under 5
kids that get the vaccine. Even though science and logic say yes, as a new parent you’re extra cautious,” Antonio said. The Kizzies are not alone. Numbers the CDC released at the end of May indicate that hesitancy about vaccinating their children is high among parents across the country. Although the U.S. Food and Drug administration approved COVID vaccines for children between the ages of 5 and 11 last October, only about 30% of kids in that age range

In response to this unacceptable decision, I, along with members of the Congressional Black Caucus, are co-leading a letter to President Biden urging him to swiftly declare this unprecedented attack on abortion rights and access as the public health and national emergency that it is. We have seen what life was like preRoe v. The CDC reports that one in five hospitalized children end up in the ICU. EDITORIAL/COMMENTARY/OPINION Justice Thomas and the Conservative Supreme Court The politics of chickens Have Fanned the Flames of Racism in America coming home to roost By Stacy M. Brown NNPA Newswire Senior National Correspondent
The Supreme Court not only abolished abortion rights in America with its June 24, 2022, decision but also ended any semblance of racial tolerance in the United States.
By Dr. David L. Horne PHD
Former President Donald Trump’s Make America Great Again cry proved an easy to read between-the-lines moniker, but even that was seen as nothing more than the typical dog whistle – until now. After the high court’s ruling, the MAGA crowd has become more emboldened. “President Trump, on behalf of all the Maga patriots in America, I want to thank you for the historic victory for white life in the Supreme Court [June 24],” Illinois Republican Mary Miller told a cheering crowd during a rally as she stood next to the former president. Running for reelection in the 15th congressional district, Miller received an invite from Trump to speak. Her camp attempted to deflect from her racist comment, stating that she misspoke and intended to say, “right to life.” Responding to a tweet by the nation’s first African American president, Texas GOP Sen. John Cornyn compared the decision to reverse Roe v. Wade to segregation. “Now do Plessy v. Ferguson and Brown v. Board of Education,” Cornyn tweeted at Obama following the 44th president writing that the court not only reversed nearly 50 years of precedent, “it relegated the most intensely personal decision someone can make to the whims of politicians and ideologues – attacking the essential freedoms of millions of Americans.” Cornyn thundered what many in the GOP and the high court’s conservative majority have always whispered: a desire to overturn Brown v. Board of Education and resurrect the 1800s doctrine of “separate but equal” to re-establish racial segregation laws that inherently imply that Black people are inferior. “In future cases, we should reconsider all of this Court’s substantive due process precedents, including Griswold,
Lawrence, and Obergefell,” Justice Clarence Thomas wrote a day before abolishing Roe. Thomas and fellow conservatives had struck down a New York law that restricted gun ownership. “Because any substantive due process decision is demonstrably erroneous … we have a duty to correct the error established in those precedents,” said Thomas. The justice has gained the turncoat nickname, Uncle Thomas, from African Americans and others. In the 1965 Griswold v. Connecticut case, the court voted 7-2 to strike down a law restricting married couples’ access to birth control. The majority stated that such statutes are impermissible because they violate the right to privacy for citizens. The cases of Lawrence and Obergefell respectively made same-sex activity and marriages legal. Jim Obergefell, the plaintiff in that landmark case, called Thomas out in a nationally televised interview. He noted that Thomas specifically named same-sex and contraceptive rights, in his opinion, omitting interracial marriage. If the court overturned that law, Thomas’ marriage to Ginni, who is white, would face peril. “He omitted Loving v. Virginia because it affects him personally,” Obergefell stated. Striking a severe nerve, Thomas went a step further when voting to strike down New York’s gun law, even after more than 277 mass shootings have occurred in 2022. The Black justice

The Stakes Are Too High to Stay Quiet
The result? Today’s Supreme Court has been taken over by a hyperpartisan supermajority that just dismanted abortion care in America.
To the Editor: When Donald Trump was in office, he and Mitch McConnell made three lifetime appointments to the Supreme Court. McConnell went so far as to defy Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s dying wish—that the next president appoint her replacement—by packing the Court with Amy Coney Barrett just eight days before the 2020
But there’s something we can do. The Judiciary Act of 2021 would add four seats to the Supreme Court bench—restoring balance to the court. It’s the solution we need to move away from the extremely partisan rulings that now threaten our fundamental freedoms. Recent polling showed that the
invoked the disgusting Dred Scott decision, where thenchief justice Roger Taney cautioned that African Americans would have the right to carry firearms in public if the court recognized them as U.S. citizens. “Even Chief Justice Taney recognized that public carry was a component of the right to keep and bear arms – a right free Blacks were often denied in antebellum America,” Thomas dared to assert. Justice Stephen Breyer noted the “serious dangers and consequences of gun violence” against the Second Amendment. Thomas wasn’t done, however. He compared abortion statistics to soldiers killed during the Civil War. “I join the opinion of the court because it correctly holds that there is no constitutional right to abortion,” Thomas wrote. “Abortion is not deeply rooted in this nation’s history and tradition. It’s not implicit in the concept of ordered liberty,” he said. Attorney Daniel Goldman, the former lead counsel for the House Impeachment Committee who is running for Congress in New York’s 10th district, blasted Thomas. “When you read Clarence Thomas’s concurrence, where he calls into question many other rights based on the fundamental right to privacy, remember that he testified unequivocally in his confirmation hearings that there is a right to privacy in the Constitution,” Goldman tweeted.
majority of voters support expanding the court. Congress has changed the size of the Supreme Court seven times already in our nation’s history. It’s time to do it again. I’m urging our representatives to back this important bill now so we know they want to protect the rights of the American people. The stakes are too high to stay quiet on this important issue. Sincerely, Donna Forte 91977
Not only is it clearly evident that American public school education has not been paying enough attention to teaching American government (generally called Civics) for the last 20 years or more, it is also the case that the results of that policy have begun coming home very, very seriously. The U.S.A., the world’s leading democratic republic, appears hobbled and sick. Since at least November 2020, when former POTUS Donald Trump launched a straightforward attempt to subvert the essence of continuous democratic government — the peaceful transfer of power to the winner, not the loser, of elections — the U.S.A’s experiment in building democracy has been taking a serious beating. Too easily many of us have simply referred to “African jungle politics” or the rise of the Nazi brownshirts to characterize the bold attempt by Trump and his henchmen to usurp the country’s constitutional norms. While those are certainly conversation starters, this essay’s focus is on an element with a lot more cachet than either of those. The “Lost Cause” thesis of American history, some version of which has been taught publicly for well over a century in this country, is more to blame for the current pickle we find ourselves in. Right now, only the country watching Donald Trump being sent to prison for his crimes will shake the fog from our collective eyes that the “Lost Cause” lie helped put there. As explained in Britannica Encyclopedia, the “Lost Cause thesis, is a prevailing, though mythical interpretation of the causes and consequences of the American Civil War that attempts to preserve the honor and prestige of the old South
by casting the Confederate defeat in the best possible light. It attributes the loss to the overwhelming Union advantage in manpower and resources, while nostalgically celebrating an antebellum South full of benevolent slave owners and happy, contented enslaved people.” The thesis downplays or altogether ignores slavery as the principal cause of the war. The thesis became the philosophical foundation for the racial violence and terrorism employed mainly by Whites to reverse the legality and reality of Reconstruction and for the reimposition of White supremacy during the Jim Crow era and beyond.”(The best popular example of the “Lost Thesis” was the movie “Gone With the Wind,” a giant blockbuster when it premiered and it still reigns as one of the top grossing American movies of all time.) To its credit, by being accepted nationally in newspapers and school textbooks, it did help this country heal and reunify after the Civil War and become the dom-
Alzheimer’s Awareness By Christina Greer Ph.D. I recently learned that June is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month. It seems like each week a friend has shared that a loved one is in the process of living with Alzheimers. As many know, Alzheimer’s is defined as a disease that is a progressive neurologic disorder that causes the brain to shrink and brain cells to die. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia—a continuous decline in thinking, behavioral and social skills that affects a person’s ability to function independently. So many friends have shared their struggles taking care of loved ones who slowly lose the ability to remember basic facts, events, friends, and even family members. With more than 3 mil-
lion cases diagnosed in the U.S. alone, this disease has caused great strain on families as they try to figure out the best path of care for their loved ones. The s e ven sig ns of Alzheimer’s disease include: memory loss that affects daily life, loss of problem-solving ability, confusion about times and places, limitations with language, misplacing things, poor judgment, and personality changes. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, Alzheimer’s disease typically progresses slowly in three general stages: early, middle and late. The stages are sometimes referred to as mild, moderate and severe in a medical context. It is important to remember that each person may experience symptoms differently. Individuals may also progress through the stages dif-

inant nation it is today. But part of the great cost associated with that acceptance and reunion has been the slow pace of achieving real civil rights and self-determination for African-Americans. Because it actually represents an ancient, unhealed sore that was broken open again during the George Floyd protests (and the fight over getting rid of many of the standing statues of southern military heroes at American parks, universities and city centers), the fight over CRT (critical race theory), etc., the “Lost Cause” thesis has now led to where it was always logically headed, a renewed attempt to destroy democratic government so the zealots — who really can’t and do not really want to govern — can take charge. We need to pay focused attention to the congressional Jan. 6 Committee, and we need to keep our eyes on the ball. This is very serious business, folks. For me, I’m still waiting to see Trump entering Rikers in handcuffs.

We are a non-denominational full fellowship of believers dedicated to reach our community with the gospel and providing a place for believers to workship, learn, fellowship, serve and grow into the fullness of Christ Jesus. This ministry is to build people of Purpose, Prayer, Power, Praise and Prosperity. This mandate is being fulfilled by reaching the reality of the gospel in a simplistic fashion, and a result, learning how to apply it in everyday life.

ARRANGEMENTS BY PREFERRED CREMATION & BURIAL MORTUARY CORDELL HILL was born in Magnolia, Arkansas, along with his identical twin brother, Cornell, on August 7, 1953. Cordell was the second child born to his parents, Valeria Thomas-Hill and Cleon Hill, Sr. Cordell received his early childhood education at Central Elementary, then went on to Gompers Jr. High school, finally entering high school at Point Loma High where he was a lover of music. One of his all time favorites was Aretha Franklin (Gotta Find Me a Angel) and he could sing every song she ever made. Baptized at Community Baptist Church early on, Cordell remained a believer in Jesus Christ until his last days. Cordell went on after High School to work for Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlor, then went on to become employed by the San Diego Zoo and Carriage Trade. His last site of employment was at Arroyo Vista Hospital where he worked with his dear mother, until his health began to fail him and he retired. In 1982, Cordell met the love of his life, Mac Parker. They went on to live a very happy life together until Mac’s untimely death some twenty years into their relationship. Dell was the head of the household and would often remind his siblings who was the oldest. Dell enjoyed laughing, singing, cooking, and spending time with his favorite cousin-sister, Becky. On Friday, May 20, 2022, at 5:15 a.m., after over twenty years of dialysis, God relieved his Angel Cordell Edmon Hill of all of his pain and called him to Glory. Cordell will be greatly missed. Cordell was preceded in death by his mother, Valeria Hill-Thomas, father Cleon Hill, Sr., his brother Cleon, Hill, Jr., and his favorite cousin-sister BeckyDell. He leaves to cherish his memory eight brothers: Mack Parker (Lavern) of Arizona, twin brother Cornell Hill, Anthony Hill of Oklahoma, Ronald Hill (Patricia) Donald, Terry, Darren, and Rodney Hill all of San Diego; a very special niece-sister La Toya Hill of San Diego, and a host of aunties, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and family friends.

VANESSA R. DORSEY was born on Friday, June 4, 1954, to the late G.S. and Lorraine Hart, and entered God’s rest on Monday, May 30, 2022. She grew up in Long Beach, CA, with her six siblings. In her early twenties, she moved with her late husband and daughter to San Diego, CA, where she lived for the remainder of her years. Vanessa became a single parent in her mid-twenties and as a result, served in the roles of stay-at-home mom and homemaker. She devoted her life to caring for her children as best she could.
RICHARD POLK was born November 25, 1934, to Willie M. and Carlean Watts Polk, who preceded him. He was the first of four children, Henry L. and Evely Y., who preceded him, and Jean Polk. He graduated from Lincoln High School in Camden, Arkansas, and immediately joined the U.S. Air Force and retired after 23 years of service. He married Jamesine (Jamie) Hill, the love of his life, and three children joined this union.
Vanessa was a Christian, not just in her words, but also in her actions; and was active both in her church and community. She had an authentic relationship with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, whom she accepted into her life at an early age. Her favorite pastimes include cultivating her relationship with God through praying, worshiping, praising, studying the Bible, and meditating on the Word of God. She also enjoyed listening to music, especially Gospel, hymns, rhythm and blues, She also loved dancing, eating out, and spending time with loved ones. Vanessa’s life reflects one of strength, perseverance, and resilience. She suffered countless setbacks and was able to overcome them all because of her faith. She trusted in Jesus Christ and remained steadfast in His Word. Vanessa answered the call on her life and endured until the end and is now in the presence of the Lord. This homegoing is a celebration of Vanessa’s life and legacy, and a magnificent showcase of the glory of the mighty God she served! Jesus kept her! Vanessa leaves behind four children—Michelle M. Hart, Nefertiti DorseyRobertson (Donald), Dr. Takisha Williams, and Fernando Lazo. She has two grandchildren—Isaiah Harris and Oceana Dorsey. Five siblings survive her— Evelyn McNeil, Rita Williams, G.S. Hart (Debra), Anita Belizaire, and Felecia HartBrown. After retiring from the Air Force, he brought his family to San Diego. He worked for Occidental Research, and over time he worked for Genus of Airco Gases. The name was then changed to British Oxygen Company, BOC, where he retired. After getting bored sitting around, he went to work for La Mesa RV. Growing up, Richard joined Zion Hill Baptist Church, under the pastorage of Rev. Samuel Morris. Richard joined Bayview Baptist Church under the pastorage of Rev. Timothy J. Winters in 1977. He was a trustee, and he worked in the parking lot, culinary and men’s ministry. Richard was a devoted and faithful member until his failing health. Richard loved to cook on the grill, his chicken and ribs were mouthwatering. He was an amateur handy man, if duct tape couldn’t fix it, it couldn’t be fixed. Care Services Bill Passes First Assembly
Senate President pro Tempore Toni G. Atkins says it is ‘imperative’ to prepare California for the reality of life without Roe v. Wade Voice & Viewpoint Newswire
O
n June 21, the Assembly Committee on Business and Professions passed SB 1375, a bill authored by Senate President pro Tempore Toni G. Atkins (D-San Diego) to clarify existing law that allows nurse practitioners meeting specified criteria to practice without physician supervision, including first trimester abortion care. “As the leaked Supreme Court majority draft opinion last month showed us, it is imperative that we prepare California for a reality without the protections of Roe v. Wade, and SB 1375 is a critical piece of the puzzle,” Pro Tem Atkins said. “Patients already need more access to health care providers and services, and if abortion access is eliminated at the federal level, than that need is going to grow exponentially. Nurse practitioners are highly skilled, qualified, and are ready and able to fill that need.” SB 1375 would help address the shortage of health care professionals projected for California and complements recommendations from the California Future of Abor-
tion Council as a way to strengthen abortion care. The bill would widen access and affordability to abortion services and healthcare by increasing the number of nurse practitioners able to provide critically-needed care, especially for marginalized and lower-income communities. The bill would clarify provisions set forth in law by Assemblymember Jim Wood’s AB 890 (2020) and Pro Tem Atkins’ AB 154 (2013). AB 890 authorizes nurse practitioners who meet certain requirements to practice without physician supervision, while AB 154 increased the types of trained health professionals who can provide early abortions by allowing nurse practitioners, certified nurse midwives, and physician assistants to perform early abortions safely within the terms of their licenses. SB 1375 would update statutes relating to early abortion services to allow nurse practitioners qualified to practice independently to provide first trimester abortion care, thus creating a mechanism for thousands of experienced nurse practitioners in California to begin expanding access to patients in need of these services.
Voices for Children’s CASA program recruits and trains volunteers to advocate on behalf of youth in foster care and to be a stable figure in their lives Special to The San Diego Voice & Viewpoint As a former youth in foster care, Sam White was looking for a way to give back and make a difference locally. The opportunity came to him in the form of a Voices for Children social media post, which led him to attend an information session. Inspired by what he experienced, he decided to volunteer by supporting and advocating for local youth in foster care as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA). Voices for Children’s CASA program recruits and trains volunteers to advocate on behalf of youth in foster care and to be a consistent, stable figure in their lives. Last year, Voices for Children served more than 3,700 children in San Diego and Riverside Counties. White was first paired with a young teenager who was failing most of his classes and was facing many challenges. $3.2 Million Settlement Reached in Police Killing of Daunte Wright Associated Press A suburban Minneapolis city has agreed to pay $3.2 million to the family of Daunte Wright, a Black man who was fatally shot by a police officer who said she confused her gun for her Taser. The tentative settlement also includes changes in police policies and training involving traffic stops like the one that resulted in Wright’s death, according to a statement Tuesday night, June 21, from attorneys representing Wright’s family. Wright was shot once in the chest by Brooklyn Center Officer Kim Potter, who is white, after the 20year-old was stopped for expired registration tags in April 2021. The former officer was subsequently convicted of first- and second-degree manslaughter and was sentenced to two years in prison. Potter is heard on video yelling “Taser” several times just before she fires her pistol.
Wright’s family members “hope and believe the measures of change to policing, policies and training will create important improvements to the community in Daunte’s name,” said co-counsel Antonio M. Romanucci. “Nothing can bring him back, but the family hopes his legacy is a positive one and prevents any other family from enduring the type of grief they will live with for the rest of their lives.” The shooting happened at a time of high tension in the area, with former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who is white, standing trial just miles away for the killing of George Floyd, who was Black. Floyd’s May 2020 death prompted a reckoning over police brutality and discrimination involving people of color. The fallout from Wright’s death led the Brooklyn Center City Council to pass a series of reforms, including the use of social workers and other trained professionals to respond to medical, mental health and social-needs

meet virtually to work on classes and assignments. White is currently helping him earn his driver’s license. During White’s journey as a CASA, he emphasized the essential support provided by his advocacy supervisor. Because most CASAs are new to this arena, Voices for Children assigns every volunteer with an advocacy supervisor, a staff member with expert knowledge of the court system, the child welfare system, and resources available to youth in foster care. An advocacy supervisor is a CASA’s sounding board and champion. “My newest advocacy supervisor is really cool. We recently met over Zoom to share ideas and solutions that are helping me better advocate for my case child. This guidance is crucial in ensuring the children in our care get to a better place,” said White.

calls that don’t require police. The changes also prohibit police from making arrests for low-level offenses and require the city to use unarmed civilians to handle minor traffic violations. The settlement is one of the largest involving police conduct in Minnesota. Last year, the city of Minneapolis agreed to pay $27 million to Floyd’s family.
Minneapolis previously paid $20 million to the family of Justine Ruszczyk Damond, after she called 911 to report a suspected assault behind her home in July 2017 and was fatally shot by Mohamed Noor, one of the officers who responded to her call. Noor is Somali American and Damond was white.
With a full-time job as a Commercial Real Estate Developer and graduate student at the University of San Diego, White continues to stay in touch with his assigned teen and be a dedicated and constant presence in his life. “One time he said, ‘you’ve been one of the most consistent people in my life,’ which is crazy. I’m like, ‘you’re a teenager, I would hope there’s other people that have done so,’ but that’s what I try to do. Just follow my word,” said White. COVID-19 UPDATES
Covid Funding to Improve Air Quality in Schools
RESEARCHERS CONTINUE STUDY OF
COVID-19 Vaccinations, Pregnancy and Postpartum Ten-million-dollar grant will support further examination of COVID-19 vaccination safety Voice & Viewpoint Newswire
M
Researchers at UCSD School of Medicine, in collaboration with the American Academy of Allergy Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI), will continue a national study to evaluate the safety of COVID19 vaccinations during pregnancy, and monitor immune response for mother and baby following vaccinations.
So, one might assume school districts would welcome the federal covid-relief money available to upgrade heating and air-conditioning systems and improve air quality/filtration in K-12 schools.
Research has found that pregnant people are particularly vulnerable to SARS-CoV-2 infection and at higher risk of developing a more serious disease course, including approximately a 70 percent increased risk of death. Infection in pregnancy also increases the risk for preterm delivery and other adverse pregnancy outcomes.
By Liz Szabo Kaiser Health News any U.S. schools were in dire need of upgrades long before the covid-19 pandemic drew attention to the importance of indoor ventilation in reducing the spread of infectious disease. The average U.S. school building is 50 years old, and many date back more than a century.
Photo: CDC
But a report released this month from the CDC found most U.S. public schools have made no major investments in improving indoor ventilation and filtration since the start of the pandemic. Instead, the most frequently reported strategies to improve airflow were notably low-budget, such as relocating activities outdoors and opening windows. The CDC report found that fewer than 40% had replaced or upgraded their HVAC systems since the start of the pandemic. Even fewer were using high-efficiency particulate air, or HEPA, filters in classrooms (28%), or fans to increase the effectiveness of having windows open (37%). The CDC and White House have stressed indoor ventilation as a potent weapon in the battle to contain covid. Congress has approved billions for public and private schools that can be used for a range of covidrelated responses — such as face masks and new HVAC systems. Data shows that improving ventilation has benefits well beyond covid. Good indoor air quality is associated with improvements in math and reading; greater ability to focus; fewer symptoms of asthma and respiratory disease; and less absenteeism. “The research shows that a school’s literal climate — the heat, the mold, the humidity — directly affects learning,” said Phyllis Jordan, associate director of FutureEd, a think tank at Georgetown University’s McCourt School of Public Policy. Clean-air advocates said the funding provides a once-in-a-generation opportunity to make the air more breathable for students and staff with allergies and asthma, as well as helping schools in California and throughout the West weather the threat of smoke inhalation from wildfires. Most schools don’t meet even minimum air quality standards, according to a 2021 report from the Lancet Covid-19 Commission. A pre-

pandemic study of Texas schools found that nearly 90% had excessive levels of carbon dioxide, released when people exhale; high concentrations in air can cause sleepiness and impair concentration and memory. Not all schools have spent federal funding wisely. A 2021 KHN investigation found that more than 2,000 schools across the country used pandemic relief funds to purchase airpurifying devices that use technology that’s been shown to be ineffective or a potential source of dangerous byproducts. School districts are required to spend at least 20% of American Rescue Plan aid on academic recovery — such as summer school and teacher salaries — leading some schools to prioritize those needs ahead of ventilation, said Jordan of FutureEd. She noted that a FutureEd analysis of spending plans indicated districts intend to devote nearly $10 billion from the latest funding to ventilation and air filtration in coming years. Los Angeles schools, for example, have budgeted $50 million to provide 55,000 portable commercial-grade air cleaners for classroom use. Schools in St. Joseph, Missouri, plan to spend more than $20 million to replace aging HVAC systems. In Boston, the school district has installed 4,000 air quality sensors in classrooms and offices that can be monitored remotely. But workable solutions don’t have to be hightech. While replacing a central air system is a major construction project that can top $1 million per school, quality HEPA purifiers — which have proven effective at removing the coronavirus from the air — run closer to $300 to $400. About 70% of schools have at least inspected their heating and ventilation systems since the pandemic emerged, a key first step to making repairs, according to the CDC. “That’s just something that school districts don’t normally have the funds to do a deep dive on,” said Emile Lauzzana, executive director of capital projects for Ann Arbor Public Schools. “It’s unfortunate that it took a pandemic to get us here, but we’re in a better place with indoor air quality today.” This article was first published by KHN (Kaiser Health News).

The Community Celebrates the Grand Opening of Valencia Pointe A 102 Unit Affordable Housing Development in Southeastern San Diego Voice & Viewpoint Newswire Mayor Todd Gloria, Nick Manchione, San Diego County Agency Director and Deputy Chief Administrative Officer of the Health, Housing, and Human Services Agency, David Estrella, San Diego County Director of Housing and Community Development Services joined CRP Affordable Housing and development partners E. Smith & Company, MAAC Project, and MirKa Development in a grand opening of Valencia Pointe, an impressive 102 unit affordable housing development in the O’Farrell neighborhood of Southeastern San Diego. This apartment home development consists of four levels of 58 two-bedroom and 44 three-bedroom apartment homes over an enclosed parking structure. The 2.5 acre site is located on the northeast corner of Valencia Parkway and Division Street where United Missionar y Baptist Church was previously located.

Local and state leaders were key supporters of the development which received C ou nt y, St at e , and federal funding and assistance including the County Innovative Hous i ng Tr ust Fund, California Housing Finance Agency Senate Bill 2 mixed-income
funds, and state and federal low-income housing tax credits. “There is no problem bigger than our affordable housing crisis,” said Mayor Todd Gloria in addressing the grand opening attendees. “This is what I hear from San Diegans most about. The rent is too high. They can’t seem to foresee how to buy a home in this city.” Valencia Pointe is a real solution to what is on the mind of San Diegans. The development is helping us create a more affordable city for all San Diego residents. The new apartment homes designed for families contain fully equipped kitchens, enclosed laundry hook ups, balconies, and outside storage spaces. The landscape plan includes sizable open space on the southwest corner of the site. The apartment homes surround a large interior courtyard designed to entice resident interaction in a secured environment. The common area includes a tot lot, outdoor kitchen space, and community space amenities consisting of a well-appointed kitchen space, a community room, a computer lab, bath-
rooms, and fully equipped laundry facilities. In addition to the plaza courtyard, the development offers recreational facilities at the north end of the site to encourage residents to exercise and remain active. The creative architectural design features the use of attractive materials and colors along with the open breeze ways throughout the development that take advantage of the dramatic westerly ocean views. The community will serve families earning up to 40%, 50%, and 60% of the area median income. In many instances, working families that will call Valencia Pointe home will now have additional income available to support their family. Over 3,000 rental applications were received for the 102 available apartment homes. It is anticipated that the 102 families that will call Valencia Pointe home will begin occupancy in August.

A special donation drive was held on June 25, 2022 to support the Haitian Bridge Alliance to gather supplies for Haitian migrants detained at the Tijuana border. Haitian migrants have been in the news lately as many have tried crossing into the United States through the Mexican border, fleeing their home country of Haiti, which is reported by the Associated Press as being rife with gang violence and low opportunities for families after the 2010 earthquake that decimated the nation. The United States has also come under fire lately for prioritizing Ukrainian immigrants over Haitian immigrants that have been waiting for long periods to be accepted into America, as reported in April 2022 by KPBS.

Juneteenth at the
George L. Stevens Senior Center By Rosemary Pope “KEEPING THE FAITH” was this year’s theme for the 16th Annual Juneteenth Celebration at the George L. Stevens Senior Center.
Long-awaited George D. McKinney Retirement Center Unveiled! Voice & Viewpoint Newswire Following a twelve-month, 60-unit reconstruction project, the St. Stephen’s Retirement Center, Inc. and the CRP Affordable Housing and Community Development, are finally celebrating the unveiling of the newly rehabilitated George D. McKinney Retirement Center. The ribbon cutting ceremony was held on Wednesday, June 22, and had a host of special guests and speakers, including San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria. The Retirement Center represents the continuation of Bishop George D. McKinney’s legacy as a stalwart in San Diego’s religious and community leadership circles; in particular, serving the affordable housing needs of San Diegans living in the Valencia Park area. Bishop McKinney, who passed in March 2021,
pastored the St. Stephen’s Cathedral Church of God in Christ for almost 60 years. During that time he established an extensive network of community services including a K-12 school, psychological counseling center, boys’ home, crisis intervention, emergency shelter referrals, and food distribution.
“We are celebrating this long-awaited, God given miracle at the newly rehabilitated, George D. McKinney Retirement Center. This is a major rehabilitation servicing the homes of low-income seniors and we are proud to be able to provide for this community,” said Wendy McKinney in a statement last week.
The newly reconstructed retirement center includes a state-of-the-art fitness center, custom designed community kitchen, shaded courtyard, central laundry facilities, computer learning center and reading room, designed specifically to meet the needs of seniors. This development comes back into operation as housing costs in San Diego continue to skyrocket and residents seek affordable and safe housing options.
The newly renovated center stands tall immediately next door to the Jean C. McKinney Manor, named after Bishop McKinney’s wife, the late Dr. Jean C. McKinney, who dedicated her life to serving the community. This 50-unit facility, built in 2005, also provides low income housing to seniors.
On Friday, June 17th, 200 enthusiastic guests enjoyed tasty dishes and delectable Juneteenth Day foods and witnessed the true meaning of a Juneteenth Day Celebration (Jubilee). The day started with welcome and congratulatory wishes from the offices of political dignitaries, Mayor Todd Gloria, 4th District Councilmember Monica Montgomery Steppe, and 79th State Assembly member Dr. Akilah Weber, There were an abundance of information and resource table displays on health and wellness, with free health screenings conducted by Samantha Williams R.N. with JIREH PROVIDERS (Joint Initiative For Racial Equity In Health). Additionally, stellar entertainment was provided by
Ancestral Storyteller Queen Alyce Smith Cooper, Rev. Ronald Edwards Sr., Goddess of Gospel & Inspirational Music Toot Bell, San Diego’s favorite DJ John Phillips, Larry Streaty B-3 Four Band featuring Rebecca Jade, Comedian Kree Rushing, a dramatic stage production of “Sucker Punched” from the Old Globe’s COLAB workshop, David Dredden & the Undefeated contemporary Gospel Choir, Def Sound Poetry, and Neo-Soul Singer Brittany Taylor. Gil Sotu, Director of Old Globe’s COLAB Workshop, served as MC. He kept the audience engaged, jubilant, and on their feet. Co-sponsors of this well attended event were The Old Globe, Kaiser Permanente Senior Advantage, AARP California, Mr. Winston Sloan, Ms. Shirley Cooper, and S.W.A.G. (Single Widowed Adult Group). Rosemary Pope, Executive Director of FDSRC, summed up the whole historical, fun-
filled, spiritual, and uplifting day by stating: “All the time, energy, effort, and preparation my Volunteer staff and I gave was truly a labor of love. It is most gratifying and rewarding to see guests arriving and leaving this event with broad smiles, nods of approval, and thumbs up. These are all indicators that this Juneteenth Day Celebration was most successful and memorable. We will continue keeping the FAITH.”

The Meaning of July Fourth For the Negro conitnued from page 2
“

y the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down. Yea! we wept when we remembered Zion. We hanged our harps upon the willows in the midst thereof. For there, they that carried us away captive, required of us a song; and they who wasted us required of us mirth, saying, Sing us one of the songs of Zion. How can we sing the Lord’s song in a strange land? If I forget thee, 0 Jerusalem, let my right hand forget her cunning. If I do not remember thee, let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth.” Fellow-citizens, above your national, tumultuous joy, I hear the mournful wail of millions! whose chains, heavy and grievous yesterday, are, to-day, rendered more intolerable by the jubilee shouts that reach them. If I do forget, if I do not faithfully remem-

ber those bleeding children of sorrow this day, “may my right hand forget her cunning, and may my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth!” To forget them, to pass lightly over their wrongs, and to chime in with the popular theme, would be treason most scandalous and shocking, and would make me a reproach before God and the world. My subject, then, fellow-citizens, is American slavery. I shall see this day and its popular characteristics from the slave’s point of view. Standing there identified with the American bondman, making his wrongs mine, I do not hesitate to declare, with all my soul, that the character and conduct of this nation never looked blacker to me than on this 4th of July! Whether we turn to the declarations of the past, or to the professions of the present, the conduct of the nation seems equally hideous and revolting. America.is false to the past, false to the present, and solemnly binds herself to be false to the future.
Standing with God and the crushed and bleeding slave on this occasion, I will, in the name of humanity which is outraged, in the name of liberty which is fettered, in the name of the constitution and the Bible which are disregarded and trampled upon, dare to call in question and to denounce, with all the emphasis I can command, everything that serves to perpetuate slavery the great sin and shame of America! “I will not equivocate; I will not excuse”; I will use the severest language I can command; and yet not one word shall escape me that any man, whose judgment is not blinded by prejudice, or who is not at heart a slaveholder, shall not confess to be right and just. But I fancy I hear some one of my audience say, “It is just in this circumstance that you and your brother abolitionists fail to make a favorable impression on the public mind. Would you argue more, an denounce less; would you persuade more, and rebuke less; your cause would be much more likely to succeed.” But, I submit, where all is plain there is nothing to be argued. What point in the anti-slavery creed would you have me argue? On what branch of the subject do the people of this country need light? Must I undertake to prove that the slave is a man? That point is conceded already. Nobody doubts it. The slaveholders themselves acknowledge it in the enactment of laws for their government. They acknowledge it when they punish disobedience on the part of the slave. There are seventy-two crimes in the State of Virginia which, if committed by a black man (no matter how ignorant he be), subject him to the punishment of death; while only two of the same crimes will subject a white man to the like punishment. What is this but the acknowledgment that the slave is a moral, intellectual, and responsible being? The manhood of the slave is conceded. It is admitted in the fact that Southern statute books are covered with enactments forbidding, under severe fines and penalties, the teaching of the slave to read or to write. When you can point to any such laws in reference to the beasts of the field, then I may consent to argue the manhood of the slave. When the dogs in your streets, when the fowls of the air, when the cattle on your hills, when the fish of the sea, and the reptiles that crawl, shall be unable to distinguish the slave from a brute, then will I argue with you
that the slave is a man! For the present, it is enough to affirm the equal manhood of the Negro race. Is it not astonishing that, while we are ploughing, planting, and reaping, using all kinds of mechanical tools, erecting houses, constructing bridges, building ships, working in metals of brass, iron, copper, silver and gold; that, while we are reading, writing and ciphering, acting as clerks, merchants and secretaries, having among us lawyers, doctors, ministers, poets, authors, editors, orators and teachers; that, while we are engaged in all manner of enterprises common to other men, digging gold in California, capturing the whale in the Pacific, feeding sheep and cattle on the hillside, living, moving, acting, thinking, planning, living in families as husbands, wives and children, and, above all, confessing and worshipping the Christian’s God, and looking hopefully for life and immortality beyond the grave, we are called upon to prove that we are men! Would you have me argue that man is entitled to liberty? that he is the rightful owner of his own body? You have already declared it. Must I argue the wrongfulness of slavery? Is that a question for Republicans? Is it to be settled by the rules of logic and argumentation, as a matter beset with great difficulty, involving a doubtful application of the principle of justice, hard to be understood? How should I look to-day, in the presence of Amercans, dividing, and subdividing a discourse, to show that men have a natural right to freedom? speaking of it relatively and positively, negatively and affirmatively. To do so, would be to make myself ridiculous, and to offer an insult to your understanding. There is not a man beneath the canopy of heaven that does not know that slavery is wrong for him. What, am I to argue that it is wrong to make men brutes, to rob them of their liberty, to work them without wages, to keep them ignorant of their relations to their fellow men, to beat them with sticks, to flay their flesh with the lash, to load their limbs with irons, to hunt them with dogs, to sell them at auction, to sunder their families, to knock out their teeth, to burn their flesh, to starve them into obedience and submission to their mastcrs? Must I argue that a system thus marked with blood, and stained with pollution, is wrong? No! I will not. I have better employment for my time and strength than such arguments would imply. What, then, remains to be argued? Is it that slavery is not divine; that God did not establish it; that our doctors of divinity are mistaken? There
is blasphemy in the thought. That which is inhuman, cannot be divine! Who can reason on such a proposition? They that can, may; I cannot. The time for such argument is passed. At a time like this, scorching irony, not convincing argument, is needed. O! had I the ability, and could reach the nation’s ear, I would, to-day, pour out a fiery stream of biting ridicule, blasting reproach, withering sarcasm, and stern rebuke. For it is not light that is needed, but fire; it is not the gentle shower, but thunder. We need the storm, the whirlwind, and the earthquake. The feeling of the nation must be quickened; the conscience of the nation must be roused; the propriety of the nation must be startled; the hypocrisy of the nation must be exposed; and its crimes against God and man must be proclaimed and denounced.
of slavery. “The arm of the Lord is not shortened,” and the doom of slavery is certain. I, therefore, leave off where I began, with hope. While drawing encouragement from “the Declaration of Independence,” the great principles it contains, and the genius of American Institutions, my spirit is also cheered by the obvious tendencies of the age. Nations do not now stand in the same relation to each other that they did ages ago. No nation can now shut itself up from the surrounding world and trot round in the same old path of its fathers without interference. The time was when such could be done. Long established customs of hurtful character could formerly fence themselves in, and do their evil work with social impunity. Knowledge was then confined and enjoyed by the privileged few, and the multitude walked on in mental darkness. But a change has now come over the affairs of mankind. Walled cities and empires have become unfashionable. The arm of commerce has borne away the gates of the strong city. Intelligence is penetrating the darkest corners of the globe. It makes its pathway over and under the sea, as well as on the earth. Wind, steam, and lightning are its chartered agents. Oceans no longer divide, but
link nations together. From Boston to London is now a holiday excursion. Space is comparatively annihilated. — Thoughts expressed on one side of the Atlantic are distinctly heard on the other. The far off and almost fabulous Pacific rolls in grandeur at our feet. The Celestial Empire, the mystery of ages, is being solved. The fiat of the Almighty, “Let there be Light,” has not yet spent its force. No abuse, no outrage whether in taste, sport or avarice, can now hide itself from the all-pervading light. The iron shoe, and crippled foot of China must be seen in contrast with nature. Africa must rise and put on her yet unwoven garment. “Ethiopia, shall, stretch. out her hand unto Ood.” In the fervent aspirations of William Lloyd Garrison, I say, and let every heart join in saying it:
What, to the American slave, is your 4th of July? I answer; a day that reveals to him, more than all other days in the year, the gross injustice and cruelty to which he is the constant victim. To him, your celebration is a sham; your boasted liberty, an unholy license; your national greatness, swelling vanity; your sounds of rejoicing are empty and heartless; your denunciation of tyrants, brass fronted impudence; your shouts of liberty and equality, hollow mockery; your prayers and hymns, your sermons and thanksgivings, with all your religious God speed the year of jubilee parade and solemnity, are, to Him, mere bomThe wide world o’er! bast, fraud, deception, When from their galling chains set free, impiety, and hypocTh’ oppress’d shall vilely bend the knee, risy - a thin veil to And wear the yoke of tyranny cover up crimes which Like brutes no more. would disgrace a nation That year will come, and freedom’s reign, of savages. There is not To man his plundered rights again a nation on the earth Restore. guilty of practices more shocking and bloody God speed the day when human blood than are the people of Shall cease to flow! the United States, at this In every clime be understood, very hour. INTERNATIONAL NEWS US-Expelled Haitians Fuel Charter Business to Latin America By Julie Watson, GiselaI Perez de Acha, Katie Licari, Trenton Daniel and Patricia Luna Associated Press Haitian influencers on YouTube and TikTok are advertising charter flights to South America, but they are not targeting tourists. Instead, they tout a shadow industry that is profiting from the U.S. government sending people back to Haiti, a country besieged by gang violence. O ver a dozen S outh American travel agencies have rented planes from low-budget Latin American airlines and then sold tickets at premium prices. Many of the customers are Haitians living in Chile and Brazil before they made their way to the Texas border in September, only to be expelled by the Biden administration and prevented from seeking asylum. They are using the charter flights to flee Haiti again and return to South America. Some, clearly, plan to make another try to enter the United States.

Rodolfo Noriega of the National Coordinator of Immigrants in Chile said Haitians are being exploited by businesses taking advantage of their desperation. The airlines and travel agencies say they work within the legal norms of the countries where they are operating from and are simply providing a service to the Haitian diaspora in South America. The business model was revealed in an eightmonth investigation by The Associated Press with the University of California,
Berkeley’s Human Rights Center. Haitians sick of the deprivations of their island home resettled in Chile or Brazil, many after Haiti’s catastrophic 2010 earthquake. Then, last fall, struggling as the pandemic hit local economies and beset by racism, thousands decided to make their way to the Texas border town of Del Rio. T h e re , t h e y e n c ou n tered a public health order that blocks migrants from requesting asylum.
Authorities returned them not to South America, where some of their children were born, but to their original homeland — Haiti. Some interviewed by the AP said they feared for their lives there and wanted to return to South America. But airlines had stopped direct commercial flights from Haiti to Chile and Brazil during the pandemic; their remaining option was the charters. The flights from Haiti became a lucrative business as restrictions aimed at con-
Nurses at Zimbabwe’s Public Hospitals Strike for Better Pay Associated Press Striking nurses and health workers have brought Zimbabwe’s government hospitals to a near standstill, straining a once vibrant public health system now plagued by a lack of medicines and basic supplies such as gloves.
“We are hungry; the situation is no longer sustainable. Health workers are walking to work because they can’t afford bus fare. Everything is benchmarked in U.S. dollars except our salaries,” said Dongo. Dozens of nurses in uniform, some doctors wearing stethoscopes, and other health workers marched, sang and chanted at Parirenyatwa Hospital in Harare, one of the country’s largest public hospitals. Others carried placards reading “Bring back our dignity.” Similar strikes were taking place at other hospitals across the country, said Dongo. Desperate patients sat in the hospital parking lot or on the hospital grounds with little hope of getting help.
From November 2020 until this May, at least 128 charters were rented by travel agencies in Chile and Brazil for flights from Haiti, according to flight tracking information and other independent verification by the AP and Berkeley.
He said he had knives pulled on him, forged rivers that carried others away to their deaths and encountered highway robbers. In the end, he said the Haitians were handcuffed and “treated like animals” by U.S. immigration authorities. He said his son caught pneumonia in the immigration detention center.
Not all of the passengers on the charters had tried to immigrate to the U.S., but based on interviews and an analysis of flight data using the Swedish service Flightradar24, it is clear that the charters have become a major means to flee Haiti. Many of the Haitians go back to Chile and Brazil, rather than places close to the U.S. like Mexico, because they have visas and legal paperwork to get into those countries. And having lived there, they can find jobs quickly to make money for the trip north. Some, like Amstrong JeanBaptiste, also have children
As he waited in Port-auPrince for a charter flight back to Santiago, news from northern Chile underscored why he wanted to go to the U.S. in the first place: A demonstration against immigrants drew thousands of protesters who turned violent. Would he try to go to the U.S. again? He did not rule it out. “The risks are so numerous that this shouldn’t be an experience to repeat,” he said. “However, one should never say never.”
By Cara Anna Associated Press “Africa is actually taken hostage” in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine amid catastrophically rising food prices, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told the African Union continental body during a closeddoor address on Monday, June 20. It took weeks of requests for Zelenskyy to address African nations, many of whom retain close ties to Russia and failed to support a U.N. General Assembly resolution condemning the invasion earlier this year.
The health professionals stopped working Monday, June 20, after rejecting the government’s offer of a 100% pay rise which they say is inadequate to meet their needs amid skyrocketing inflation of 130%. Health workers want to be paid in United States dollars because salaries in local currency are being eroded by inflation, Zimbabwe Nurses Association president Enock Dongo said. Most health workers are taking home less than $200 a month, he said.

trolling the spread of the coronavirus decimated tourism, according to the travel agents. Planes arrive empty to Haiti but return to South America full.
Ukraine and the West hope to weaken those ties by emphasizing that Russia’s actions are to blame for shortages of wheat and edible oils and skyrocketing food and fuel prices across the African continent of 1.3 billion people. Russia’s blockade of Ukrainian exports is a “war crime,” the European Union’s top diplomat, Josep Borrell, said on Monday. “I slept here but no one is attending to me. The nurses and doctors say they should be paid more money before they can treat me,” lamented Tobias Shavane, who said he was injured in a traffic crash on Monday. A dirty bandage served as a sling for his arm while his swollen hand was strapped to a blood-stained piece of a cardboard box. In addition to offering all civil servants a 100% pay increase in local currency, the government says it is negotiating with bakers to try to reduce the price of bread, which, like other basic necessities, is now out of reach for many people. Russia’s war in Ukraine is blamed for increasing prices. Since the start of the war in Ukraine, Zimbabwe’s inflation rate has
nearly doubled, according to official statistics. Many fear Zimbabwe could return to the hyperinflation of 2008 which reached 500 billion %, according to the International Monetary Fund. That economic catastrophe forced the government to adopt a multi-currency system in 2009 in which U.S. dollars and the South African rand were accepted as legal tender. Zimbabweans who earn in local currency such as government workers must source dollars on the illegal market to pay for goods and services that are being charged in U.S. dollars. Retailers said the rising rates for U.S. dollars on the illegal market are forcing them to increase prices, often every few days, to allow them to restock.
“They are trying to use you and the suffering of the people to put pressure on the democracies that have imposed sanctions on Russia,” Zelenskyy told the AU, whose leaders recently met in Russia with President Vladimir Putin and echoed Moscow’s assertion that Western sanctions are in part to blame for the food security crisis.

Commission chair Moussa Faki Mahamat, one of those who met with Putin, tweeted that African nations “reiterated the AU position of the urgent need for dialogue to end the conflict.” Current AU chair and Senegalese President Macky Sall tweeted that Africa respects “the peaceful resolution of conflicts and the freedom of commerce.” Russia is the largest weapons exporter to sub-Saharan Africa, and Moscow emphasizes its long ties with African nations dating to the Soviet Union. Some African leaders, meanwhile, are exasperated by global powers’ efforts to choose one side or another.
Millions of people in the Horn of Africa, including Ethiopia and Somalia, are now struggling to find food or even humanitarian food aid amid a historic drought. The Associated Press was the first to report hundreds of deaths this year in Somalia alone.
Ukraine will press its case again later this week when its foreign minister speaks to Africa-based reporters in a briefing organized by the United States government on how “Russian Federation’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine affects food security on the African continent.”
“We know for a fact there will be increased deaths ... well into 2023,” USAID Ethiopia mission director Sean Jones told the AP last week.
The EU’s top diplomat said he has written to all African foreign ministers to explain that the bloc’s sanctions on Russia are not responsible for the looming global food crisis, and pledged to work out ways for exports to reach their continent.

TIPS TO
Avoid Heat-related Illnesses ids, regardless of how active you are. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink. Warning: If your doctor limits the amount you drink or has you on water pills, ask how much you should drink while the weather is hot. Stay away from very sugary or alcoholic drinks— these actually cause you to lose more body fluid.

he heat is on — and the danger to your health and safety is real. People suffer a heat-related illness when the body’s temperature control system gets overloaded. Know the warning signs and symptoms of excessive heat exposure and follow these tips to survive those hot summer days:
Replace Salt and Minerals: Heavy sweating removes salt and minerals from the body that need to be replaced. A sports drink can replace the salt and minerals you lose in sweat. If you are on a lowsalt diet, have diabetes, high blood pressure, or other chronic conditions, talk with your doctor.
Wear Appropriate Clothing: Choose lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing. Stay Cool Indoors: Stay in an air-conditioned place as much as possible. If your home does not have air conditioning, go to the shopping mall or public library—even a few hours spent in air conditioning can help your body stay cooler when you go back into the heat. Visit www.sandiegocounty. gov/hhsa/programs/ais/cool_ zones/ to find a San Diego Cool Zone near you, or call 2-1-1.
Keep Your Pets Hydrated: Provide plenty of fresh water for your pets, and leave the water in a shady area. Check for Updates: Check your local news for extreme heat alerts and safety tips and to learn about any cooling shelters in your area.

Use a Buddy System: When working in the heat, monitor the condition of your co-workers and have someone do the same for you. Visit adults at risk at least twice a day and closely watch them for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Infants and young children, of course, need much more frequent watching.

Pharrell Williams
Pays NAACP Leaders’ Student Debt
By Cori Zaragoza Staff Writer On Friday, June 17, musician Pharrell Williams attended a panel discussing Black student debt, in partnership with the NAACP, at the St. Regis Hotel in Washington, D.C., and also made a few dreams come true. “For all of you on the stage, we are clearing your current student loan debt,” said a moderator during the event, as reported on twitter by the NAACP. The surprise was announced after the panel allowed students to share their stories of how they navigated college and their finances, and the difficulties they have faced as Black students in debt. Pharrel Williams is providing the funds through his music festival called ‘Something in the Water,’ which kicked off on that same day. In an interview with ABC 7 news, Wisdom Cole, who organized the panel and is also NAACP’s National Director of Youth and College said, “Pharrell forever changed their lives. This was a powerful moment. Now just imagine if President Biden made this a reality for all student debt holders in America.” The students who will have their student debt cleared are reported by Afrotech to be Robyn Hughes, (Southern University junior), Damarius Davis (North Carolina AT alumni), Jamie Turner (Norfolk State University alumni), Channing Hill (Howard University senior), and Devan Vilfrard, (Florida A&M University senior). “I literally had to work three jobs my freshmen year just to survive everything. My parents were struggling so just to have this… I am so grateful right now. I appreciate y’all so much thank you,” Davis said during the panel.
Simple Tips for Mindful Eating Mindful eating doesn’t have to be restrictive and you don’t have to give up your favorite foods. “Simply incorporating more foods that are crafted with integrity and align with your values into your day-to-day eating can go a long way toward helping you feel your best,” says Kara Lydon, a registered dietitian nutritionist. As an intuitive eating counselor, Lydon advises people to stop looking at food as “good” or “bad” and instead, listen to their bodies and eat what feels best in the moment. With those principles in mind, here are a few simple choices you can make to nourish your body and enjoy your food. Snack Smart Snacking can keep you satiated between meals and help you regulate your blood sugar and energy levels. It can also be an opportunity to take in essential vitamins and nutrients. Common processed snack foods are often loaded with sodium, added sugars and trans fats. Try these wholesome alternatives: Greek yogurt with raw honey, hummus with carrot and celery sticks, apple slices with peanut butter, edamame, egg and cheese bites, nuts or fruit salad.
Choose Grass-Fed Dairy In conversations about healthy eating, dairy products sometimes unfairly get a bad rap. But dairy actually has essential nutrients that can be incorporated into a wellrounded daily diet. Lydon says that it’s helpful to be intentional with your choices. The next time you visit the dairy aisle, take a closer look at the labels and search for the term “grass-fed.” “Grass-fed cows produce dairy with significantly higher concentrations of beta-carotene and certain fatty acids, including conjugated linoleic acids and a more optimal omega-3/omega-6 ratio,” says Lydon. “These nutrients play key roles in disease prevention, mood regulation, cognitive function and more.” Grow at Home If you have the space, consider starting a small garden in your yard or even indoors on your kitchen counter. Growing your own food is sustainable and can help you connect more deeply to what you feed your family. What’s more, being able to harvest produce at its peak means more nutritional value and flavor per bite. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the prospect of growing plants from seeds, start by buying a few pots

of herbs, such as basil, chives and mint. These can be found at many grocery stores. They’re relatively easy to maintain, and can instantly add zest to salads, soups and other meals. Better eating should never feel like a sacri-
fice or leave you feeling hungry. The good news is that wholesome, healthier-for-you choices that nourish the body and soul abound today. (StatePoint)

Microbusinesses Get More Time to Apply for $2,500 County Grants By Gig Conaughton County of San Diego The smallest of San Diego County’s small businesses – from dog walkers to tutors, sidewalk vendors and everything in between – now have more time to apply for a free $2,500 County grant. The deadline for “microbusinesses” hurt by COVID19 to apply for the second round of $2,500 grants has been extended from June 24 to July 15. The grants are partly funded by the California Office of the Small Business Advocate. A first round of grant applications closed in March. County supervisors unanimously approved in February giving out 1,550 of the $2,500 grants, totaling $3.8 million, to COVID-19affected businesses earning less than $50,000 a year with fewer than five full-time employees.
women, minorities, veterans, limited English speakers, businesses in low- to mid-income rural areas and people without documentation. Microbusinesses may be eligible for a $2,500 grant if their business: • Was started before Dec. 31, 2019, is the owner’s primary source of revenue, and is currently operating or has a plan to reopen • Generated less than $50,000 in revenue in the 2019 tax year • Currently has five or fewer full-time employees and
had five or fewer employees in 2019, 2020 and 2021 • Was significantly impacted by COVID-19 • Has not previously received any grant money from the California Small Business COVID-19 Relief Grant Program • The grants are available in all five County supervisorial districts and outreach is occurring in all districts. Businesses that could benefit include home operations like pet sitters, shoppers, cleaners and home health care workers, and sidewalk vendors like food cart
operators. The grant application page can be reached either through the County’s Microbusiness COVID19 Relief Grant Program webpage at www.sandiegocounty.gov/microbusinessgrant.html or directly at the Small Business Development Center’s website at sdivsbdc. org/county-of-san-diegomicro-business-grant-program/. The County has contracted with Southwestern College’s Small Business Development Center to collect and process online applications and to conduct outreach along with the Asian Business Association of San Diego, the Logan Heights Community Development Corporation, the South County Economic Development Council and the San Diego East County Economic Development Council. The County’s grants must be distributed in 2022. If there is grant money left after the first and second round, additional application periods will be held.
The grants are being given out with a special emphasis on helping businesses run by people and groups that have historically faced barriers to obtaining capital, including

Administrator Isabella Casillas Guzman, head of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) and the voice for America’s 32.5 million small businesses in President Biden’s Cabinet, signed a Strategic Alliance Memorandum (SAM)–an authority unique to the SBA among federal agencies– with President Reuben A. Shelton III, Esq., on behalf of the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC)’s Council of Presidents, comprised of nine historically Black fraternities and sororities, sometimes referred to as the “Divine Nine.” “ This historic alliance between the SBA and the NPHC will bring SBA’s valuable small business resources into reach for many small businesses and entrepreneurs,” said Administrator
Guzman. “Working alongside partners and allies within the Divine Nine will provide even greater reach for the SBA to better provide the highly entrepreneurial Black community access to networks, financial literacy,
technical training, and capital readiness so they can successfully realize their American Dreams.” This new strategic alliance advances the SBA’s implementation of the Biden-Harris Administration’s commit-

6 Tips for Budgeting During Inflation
By Donald Williams Williams Accounting and Consulting Gas prices are high. Food costs are rising. Everything is going up and it’s all due to inflation. While the war in Ukraine was the catalyst for prices to go soaring, the domino effect only seems to get worse. In an effort to avoid another recession, The Federal Reserve raised its benchmark interest rate by 0.75 percent. Interest rates are the federal government’s main tool to combat inflation, with the goal of decreasing the amount of spending. Raising the interest rate is considered to be one of the more aggressive tactics that The Federal Reserve can take and a signal to things are getting very serious. But what should individuals and families be doing during this time? With no foreseeable end to the
effects of inflation, it’s important for people to mitigate the damage to their personal finances. Here are 6 helpful finance tips that individuals can utilize immediately to protect themselves:
1
Accelerate Purchases: You will want to accelerate purchases of goods and services that will be needed in the next year, because such purchases will be more expensive in the future. For example, purchase non-perishable items such as canned goods, toilet paper, and cleaning supplies now. Additionally, hire contractors to perform home repairs asap, since postponing will result in having to pay higher prices in the future.
2
Purchase Goods in Bulk/ Bundle Services: Start buying goods in bulk. For example, buy consumable goods (examples: paper towels, toothpaste, hair
products, shaving products, etc.) in bulk in order to obtain a lower per unit price now and to avoid having to buy in the future at higher prices. For services, try to bundle phone and data, home Internet, software, and other recurring services for more favorable pricing.
3
Consider Home-Equity Loans: To make purchases of goods and services now, you may need to take on some productive debt. Productive debt includes homeequity loans, which allows an individual to borrow against the equity in their home at a low interest rate. The borrowed funds can be immediately used to make purchases now, at prices that are lower than they will be in the future. Productive debt does not include credit card debt, as credit card debt should be avoided at all times, including during inflation.
ment to building equity throughout the federal government and across America. Chris V. Rey, International President of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. relishes in his brainchild effort. “Under the new alliance, a unique agreement for a federal government agency and the Divine Nine, the partnership will focus on increasing financial literacy within traditionally underserved, disadvantaged communities, expanding the Agency’s outreach, and introducing Black entrepreneurs to the SBA’s suite of tools and resources to start and grow their businesses including access to capital, government contracting opportunities and counseling,” he said. For additional information on SBA funding opportunities, visit www.sba.gov/ funding-programs.
4
Buy Off-Brands: Buy of f - br ands goods, especially with grocery purchases. Offbrands goods involving cereal, detergent, cleaning supplies, and many other food products can often save the individual 10-15 percent compared to the namedbrands goods, while still benefiting from substantially the same quality.
5
Buy and Hold Real Estate: Buy and hold real estate. Real estate values generally increase with inflation, so the buyer and holder of real estate will see their equity value of real estate increase, enabling the holder to retain wealth and borrow against the higher real estate values. This differs from holding cash or some other types of investments that are much less

likely to increase with inflation.
6
Consolidate Vehicle Trips: Gasoline prices often increase during periods of inflation. For those who like or need to drive a vehicle, the gasoline prices can cut into savings. Planning and consolidating car trips allows the individual to reduce the miles driven and the amount of gasoline needed. For example, if you need to go to the hair salon, the grocery store, the gym, and the gas station, instead of taking four separate trips, consolidate all of them into one.
